Zoe: More than Kevin's love interest

I just started watching This is Us awhile ago. It's great. I love it. I'm also new to Reddit but I felt I had to post about Zoe because her storyline really impacted me.

"... Do we have to make it this way? This just takes forever ..."

When we are in the flashforward in the season 3 finale , Beth goes to Kevin's house and makes coffee and it seems to take a while. It seemed just like Zoe did/does hers.

It doesn't mean that they are together but it might be that she had a deeper impact on him , hopefully a positive one. He also had an impact on her because as Beth remarked , it's hard to break old habits. She proved Beth wrong and that's not an easy feat.

"...She will break you... "

Everything Beth said to Kevin seemed to haunt him in the 10th episode of season 3. He didn't listen to Beth's warning before but in this episode he definitely reacted to everything Zoe did , wondering if everything she said would happen. He was definitely unnerved by the email break up and the empty boxes. "I'll walk over your stuff for the rest of my life...," Kevin was willing to tiptoe round the issue but she let her guard down. This was the moment of truth for them.

The boxes seemed to me physical metaphors of their emotional baggage. Zoe was closed off and her boxes staying unpacked gave her some sense of control or peace of mind as she called it. Kevin's emotional baggage mostly stems from the tragic loss of Jack. Till now he's been able to resolve the issues he had with his mum and Randall for now at least.

They both unpack each others boxes. Kevin finds even the quirky aspects of her personality found in her voodoo dolls from Haiti. I love the way he puts them away and goes ... 'okaay'. Zoe unpacks his box and found a clue about Nicky. Unpacking his baggage.

In the finale it was really sad to see her re-pack all her stuff again as Kevin watched her and brought her a box. It was sad but the beauty of this relationship is that their conflict was internal, it wasn't because they didn't love, trust or respect each other - they didn't want the same future. And that's ok, because this relationship helped them grow into better people. It didn't break them, it opened up their wounds, which they dealt with.

I haven't started season 4 but I know Kevin is open to a long term relationship , which is great. I hope for Zoe it will be the same off or on camera.

"...I want you to have what you want -but I don't want that..."

Ah, the one obstacle Zevin could not overcome.

This is us is a show about memory, family and how the actions of the past may influence your offspring. This reminds me of Carl Jung and his theory of inherited consciousness.

I have no doubt that Zoe and Kevin love each other deeply. Zoe is willing to make the tough decision in their relationship in a sacrificial way so that he can have what he wants and she tells him, 'I want you to have that...,' It's sad in the present but she knows that it is the right thing to do. Zoe is also a woman who knows what she wants and doesn't want to live a lie. Kevin also cares about her and that's why he probably didn't listen to Beth's warnings.

"... I can't compete with an old French guy?"

"....Not when he's talking about earth's dwindling water supply..."

Childhood trauma also frames ones outlook directly or indirectly. Zoe reminds me of my brother, who faced trauma growing up. Our collective and his individual experiences convinced him that he would never have children. That he would never want to subject any children to this messed up world. He has the biggest heart and is amazing with children.He is devoted to causes and it reminded me about Zoe's documentary. She seems devoted to social causes which will affect generations to come, even though she won't have any offspring in the future. She is doing her part to make the world a better place for those who will come after us. It makes me wonder how many strangers we owe for their devotion to the world, even though we may not be related to them.

"...My father sexually abused me..."

I'm interested to see if this topic will be brought back again. I have so many questions like

Why isn't her father in jail? What did her mother do etc.

I like the fact that she was safe with Beth's family, this was such a positive outcome for a child. It's a shame her Aunt doesn't recognize the part she played in making Zoe the strong woman she is and finding her path to becoming a documentarian.

" ... Any family of yours is mine right..."

Yikes, even though they are broken up they still have family in common. I think this is why Beth was peeved about the relationship.

"...I am strong..."

For me Zoe is much more than Zevin. She has a story that could be told, it doesn't have to be very prominent but it can be meaningful.

Don't get me wrong I loved Zevin, but Zoe the woman really resonated with me, from her passion, strength, independence, self awareness, overcoming her past and trying to be vulnerable.

It hit home.

I would love to have her back without necessarily being a love interest.

This is us is well written and executed so I'm happy to see how everything unfolds.
