i'm super excited to read board to death by cj connor, about a gay game store owner. comes out this month!

magic, pies, & deadly lies is a magical cozy mystery featuring a bi protagonist and a love triangle with a male love interest and a female love interest.

payback's a witch is cozy mystery adjacent, more sort of a magical competition book, but it gives me the same vibe. featuring a sapphic romance.

i haven't read this one, and i'm not sure how cozy it is, but dead dead girls has been on my tbr for awhile!

EDIT: WAIT I REMEMBER ANOTHER ONE the mimicking of known successes, which is also on my tbr but it's a sci fi cozy mystery.

there really hasn't been a ton of traditionally published queer cozy mysteries (i haven't been able to dive into indie/self publishing as much as i'd like) in the past, but it's definitely getting more common! i'm excited for this list to grow, i'll update you guys as i get more.

Most fun to write in 2023 was probably Silas Chrissie. Hard to believe that he didn't exist before December 2022! Truly the blorbo of all time. This blood-covered charming bi disaster has me kicking me feet and giggling. This fucker gets a cameo in all my other stories.

Most rotated was probably Dr Williamson Jones - he went from a document with a name in it to a whole POV protagonist for my NaNo project. I loved exploring his alcoholism and disability, his history in India and his complex relationship with his "valet".

Most likely to make me perish: this year, I expanded TAOSL to include the wider world (reality: @bethtriestowrite referred to it as the 'Sitoraverse' and I got excited). The setting is my D&D homebrew world, Mithlonde, and I am running a campaign with my writing group that affects the history of Sitora's time. So I can't talk about bloody Seamus the Silver, or Thersalus, or any of that stuff, because it's spoilers for the campaign! Tbh I might do a big post about the theology in Mithlonde because... I like it.

Coolest is hard because all my characters are deeply awkward and adorable. But the only truly cool character is Kazuo from a short story I submitted for a competition. He did win the 'best hair' award:

Kazuo’s hair was dyed a glossy midnight purple, but this morning, its usual artful J-pop quiff was in a state of disarray.

Hi! I remember you telling that you're pursuing your PhD in psychology atm, aren't you? So could you explain one thing to me: Hollywood agents have been conceal actors' and actresses' sexuality ( i mean anything but straight) to keep their audiences. Especially female audiences. If women know their fav is not straight, they will lost their interest in him because (in their mind) they won't have any chance with him. In Pedro case it's an ongoing debate about some fans making him exclusively gay to "protect" their fantasies. What do you mean? Like some fans have gay men fetish? Or it's dog in the manger situation? I have never ever met a woman who like to have her crush to be gay)) I mean it's a usual situation when woman can fall into gay man but she would like him to be straight or bi in her dreams. If you can, please explain the phenomen.

I have talked about it in other occasions. This is not much about their fave, but about the rivalry with other women. It’s actually quite common in male actors/singers fandoms to see women who really believe or want with all their heart that this man is gay because first, they have self-image and self-confidence issues, so if the man is gay then that is the reason why he would not be attracted to them and not because they are not pretty enough or interesting enough. It becomes an external reason and not an internal one (their own feeling of unworthiness or unattractiveness). In this case, they would never have any other woman to compare themselves to, because their fave would never want any other woman, and no other woman would have them. They are also extremely jealous of other fans and even of their fave’s female friends because they don’t want any other female presence in their lives or even that they are desired by other women. You can see them being hellbent on convincing other female fans that the actor/singer is gay in hopes that they will drop him and not thirst over him anymore.

In the end it’s all about the fear of other women and their intense rivalry and competition with them that stems from a relationship (or lack thereof) with their mothers as children. And yes, that comes from psychoanalysis theories. The hate against the mother that is usually mixed with love rules the lives of women throughout it.

Of course everyone has their own story and their own symptoms and defense mechanisms, but this is the general theory of women and their hate for each other. The men are just the conduits of this hatred and jealousy, they are not the main protagonists. Freud has some amazing texts (and a conference) from 1931 and 1933 about this super complicated relationship.

Also adding to it, they always compete with other fans, they want to be the ones who are closer to the guy, who know the guy better and understand him better. They don’t really care about the guy, not deep down, they just want to feel superior and better than other women and want to “win”.

And by the way, this has nothing to do with the actor or singer’s real sexuality, he may or may not be gay, but this is about women and other women.

Played: Life is Strange - True Colors

Title: Life is Strange - True Colors

I decided to record here the games I play in a similar way that I do for books. I really liked this one and it would be my favourite in the franchise if Life is Strange 2 didn’t have such personal meaning to me. However, I have to say that I was never a fan of Chloe or high school settings so I didn’t absolutely adore the first game as much as many others did.

I really liked that this game focused on accepting our feelings and helping others. A very sweet and powerful message. Before I played this game my sister told me I had to play it because there was a chubby bi protagonist I would relate to and I would 100% like Steph an lo and behold Steph is the only love interest I adore. I love her so much! Ryan is also an ok dude, but there was no competition here really. Not for me.

Personal Opinion: The romantic tension of a classic rivals-to-lovers story is exactly what you need to unwind these days. Especially with the added element of a found family in the form of a hockey team. Follow the story of Mickey James III who has a legacy to uphold as he works hard to be picked first in the NHL draft. While at the same time, his biggest competition, Jaysen Caulfield, slowly and surely makes him realize there might be more to his life than just hockey.

Do I Own This Book? Nope.

Spoilers Below For My Likes & Dislikes:

Likes:

- The rivals to lovers trope is used exquisitely here. You can just feel the sexual tension in almost every rivalry scene. I just wanted them to make out so badly. 

- Depression affects everyone differently but my god, I could relate to Mickey’s depression hard. The nothingness that he describes is accurate to how I was before meds too. And the way he couldn’t focus on any of his work is exactly what I’d gone through in college myself! So this hit real close to home and it honestly makes me so happy to see the author depict depression this way and also show how important therapy and medication is to getting better. Always love a book that advocates for better mental health.

- The bond between Mickey and Nova is so special. You can just tell they’re best friends who love being together. And I love how Nova dished out some of the best advice for him to take better care of himself. I’ll be taking her words, “Do something for you,” to heart myself as well.

- And then we have Mickey and his sisters. I love how close he is to them and how much he genuinely loves them. The way the industry doesn’t give them the time of day because they’re girls sucks but it’s real and I just love that Mickey is their biggest fucking supporter to make up for it. I love how he loves people that appreciate his sisters, the ones that give them the adulation and credit they deserve for being successful and talented women in a male-dominated field. I love that.

- The scene where Mickey and his roommate, Dorian, sat on the docks to talk about their depression is so important to me. It may actually go down as one of my favorite scenes ever. The way they offered to be listening ears to each other, the way they respected each other’s experiences, the way they VALIDATED each other’s experiences? It’s just such a good scene and so important because it normalizes talking about mental health.

- Dorian and Barbie are the best. I love straight boys that are openly and physically affectionate with one another. They’re ride-or-dies for each other and I adore that.

- The scene where Mickey confesses to nothing making him happy to his parents breaks my heart. He was full-on sobbing into their arms and telling them he didn’t know what he wanted at all and I was tearing up with him. The way his parents were there for him made my heart swell too. I love that they were trying to make up for the years that they lost with him. It’s seven years late but I’m still glad Mickey was able to tell them how he’d felt abandoned because now they have no excuse but to try harder for him.

- Cauler saying “What can I do to help?” when Mickey said he was depressed? Iconic.

- Overall this book is a diversity win all around (three named bi characters, a black love interest, two Latinos, a lesbian couple, and even a polycule). I do wish the Asian characters were more than just mentioned. I am so curious about the friendly ex, Jisung, and Alex Nakamoto. But that is a personal thing because I’m Asian so you know, at least they were mentioned and they aren’t bad.

Dislikes:

- If there is one thing that I hate, it’s a protagonist that knows the solution to his problems and the source of his problems but still refuses to do anything about it! Granted that is how depression can work and obviously, that’s how it affected Mickey but my god, he was basically a walking cry for help without ever actually crying for help. A mess. And his sisters and Nova were all telling him the solutions to his issues and yet he still refused to talk to his father about anything! And what makes this worse is that his father was so accepting of the fact that his son may not want to play hockey and was in a relationship with a man and yet Mickey spent the last seven years hating him!

- I think, overall, Mickey and Cauler are cute. But I think rivals to lovers may not be for me. As much as I love it in theory. Or maybe it was taken to extremes in this case. Because Cauler was out here egging Mickey on and very violently checking him every chance he got in chapter one. I don’t know, it just felt wrong. I get why Mickey rubbed him the wrong way but being malicious toward him without knowing shit about what Mickey was going through bothers me.

- I’ve also never liked sports stories where coaches scream at their players for losing and when players aren’t 100% supportive of one another. Or at least, I feel like someone should have gone to see how Mickey was doing. All that rivalry stuff was clearly getting to him and the Your Grace stuff too. But no one stopped to check in on him except his damn algebra professor who noticed him dissociating during the midterm and decided to help by giving him the number to the counseling center and allowed him to retake the midterm. God, he is surrounded by people who all had the opportunity to check on him when he was a zombie and yet they didn’t! I know that the onus could’ve also been on him, especially since Dorian already offered a listening ear, but oh my god, how did no one notice him dying on the outside? There’s a fucking compilation of him saying “Kill me.” It should have been obvious that he wasn’t okay!

- Something about the ending is lacking for me. I don’t actually know what it is. I know this book doesn’t set out to change the NHL’s macho heteronormative culture but I still kind of wish there was some publicity on the relationship between Mickey and Cauler. Mickey even says he wants an active hockey player to come out but not him, he’s too afraid to. But it’s like, why not you? Why not be the first? You and Cauler can be a beacon of hope and love for so many young queer sports fans and yet, they’re not? At least be public with the team and tell me what they all thought!

You’d had something on your mind, and Larry could tell by the distracted look in your eyes.

From there, you met his eyes.

“Figured me out, huh? Well, if you have to know, I got this art assignment I’m stuck on! I have to paint this girl I’ve never talked to before, and she’s so pretty!”

Not phased in the slightest, Larry chuckled.

“Wow, babe, you got a crush on her or something?”

He’s definitely teasing you, he knows you’d never do anything to betray him.

“Well, if you have to know, I do like girls, but I guess I like you the best.”

Larry’s totally accepting, and if anything, the banter you two had about it only showed how much trust you had in your relationship.

This boy loves you endlessly.

Now, if you’re comfortable, you can totally talk about pretty girls passing by in stores.

No need for either of you to ever be jealous, after all, you have his heart.

Ita Rina

First and Forgotten Yugoslav Film Star who provocated Gestapo

Ita Rina was born on 7 July 1907 in the small town of Divača (then Austro-Hungarian Empire, later Yugoslavia, now Slovenia) as Italina Lida Kravanja. She was called Ida Kravanja for short. She was named after a journalist Finzi Haydée, Jewish family friend from Trieste. The first daughter of Jožef a railroad worker and Marija Kravanja, Rina had a younger sister Danica. Shortly after the outbreak of the World War I, the family moved to Ljubljana, where Rina matriculated in 1923. She was not a good student; she repeated the third grade of elementary school. However, her dream was to be an actress.

In October 1926, Slovenski narod (Slovenian People) magazine organized a beauty pageant, and Rina entered the competition. She was crowned Miss Slovenia and was to travel to the final event for Miss Yugoslavia, which was supposed to be held on 20 December 1926 in Zagreb. However, her mother did not want to let her go to Zagreb. After a group visit from the Slovenian delegation, Marija Kravanja relented. Unfortunately, when Rina arrived in Zagreb, the jury was already choosing the most beautiful of three finalists. She was, however, noticed by Adolf Müller, the owner of Balkan Palace cinema in Zagreb. He immediately sent her photographs to German film producer Peter Ostermayer. As her mother did not want to let her go to Berlin, Rina ran away from home.

Her escape was enabled by a family friend, a painter Alojz Malota and his wife Hedvig Šarc. They invited her to come with them on a trip to Austria, and instead she went to Berlin. She has said that she felt very lonely and scared during the train ride and thought about returning home.

“That was my longest and hardest journey. I huddled myself in a corner of a coupe and looked around myself in fear. I only knew few words in German...”

Rina arrived in Berlin in 1927. Shortly after she had her first audition, following which she had classes in acting, diction, dancing.

"They would shine a spotlight on me" she later said "cameras would buzz. There were cables everywhere. Some complete strangers would stare at me, whispering amongst themselves. They told me to scream, to laugh, wave and cry. I think I looked most natural in scenes where I was crying. All I had to do was remember how far away from home I've gone and how I've deceived my mother."

"You don't know how to walk!" a director was yelling. I've dedicated all my strength on walking as gracefully as possible, and I thought to myself "how's it possible that I, who have climbed Triglav thrice, all of sudden am incapable of walking." I must admit, first few steps on film were harder than any danger definitely mountaineering.

After several small film roles in 1927 and 1928, the critics finally noticed her in the 1928 film The Last Supper. The same year, Rina met at a Yugoslav embassy party, her future husband Miodrag Đorđević, a shy engineering student from Belgrade, son of a general director of the Royal Post Office.

He asked her out to dinner in a little more upscale restaurant. What he would find out later is that his students account was not enough to pay for the meal. He went to the phone in an attempted to call a friend who could lend him money. Ita figured out what was going on, and since she was already rich, secretly passed him a few bank notes, to spare him the embarrassment. She always liked him, and they understood each other well.

 

Around that time newspapers in Yugoslavia started to sensationalize her love life, as a counter she published an open letter.

Ita Rina.

Her breakthrough into European stardom came after taking a role in a controversial film Erotikon by a Czechoslovakian director Gustav Mahaty. As soon as she read the script about a seduced and then abandoned daughter of a guard of a railroad station, she understood it as her big chance, and she was right.

Erotikon premiered in Prague. Czechoslovakian censors cut out the scene of her giving birth to a child, but the movie garnered great success with film critics and audiences across Europe. At the premiere in Paris in Moulin Rouge and the film goers carried her out of the theatre on their hands.

The films success angered the puritans. Especially the french catholic theologian, abbot Betteleme who wrote: "... First, they lie next to each other, and then one to another ... It is true that the cover hides their figures, but it certainly does not hide their movements... The protagonists are shown in particularly long shots, especially Ita... A viewer can recognize her excitement, then her expression of anxiety mixed with longing, then the pain and at the end... I blush while describing the scenes". He went though streets of Paris tearing down the posters that were plastered all over. That only raised the popularity of the film.

In 1930, Rina acted in three films, most notable being the first talking Czechoslovakian film Tonka of the Gallows, which is often named her best role. Meanwhile, she married Miodrag Đorđević in 1931. Although she had announced her retirement from her film career, but she actually continued her acting until the outbreak of World War II. Her last prewar film was crime drama Zentrale Rio.

The situation in Germany was getting tense, especially for anybody who was considered undesirable which included actors who were foreign. She left Germany on the insistence of the then ambassador of Yugoslavia Ivo Andrić. In 1939, very close to the start of WW2 every time she went to work or went home, there was a man who sat in the car. In the beginning he was very quiet and she thought he was an assistant of the producer and that he might represent some new custume, a way of saying thanks to the actors. And then he spoke. At first there were talks of the superiority of the German race, but later his changes because more apparent. "I argued with him in that car" she told to the operator in the studio and retold him the whole conversation. "How could you have dared, that man is from Gestapo." said the operator. The story was retold to Ivo Andrić, and he ordered her and her husband to urgently leave Germany. The taping of the film was mostly done. That night they packed all of their belongs. In the morning she taped a few leftover scenes and absconded for Belgrade that same day.

"Only on the road I understood what's going on. Tanks everywhere, soldiers."

They went to live in Belgrade. She didn't act as the war was starting to rage and had her first child Milan in 1940 and thee years later a daughter Tijana. Her in-laws disagreed with the marriage to a controversial actress at first. And they had a permanent table for themselves and their friends at the local tavern.

After the bombing of Belgrade they moved to Vrnjačka Banja. Life during wartime was hard and she laboured and sold all of her possessions to keep family fed. She even rescued her husband from jail where he landed after he, in a tavern proclaimed that Hitler will have the same fate Napoleon did in Russia.

They moved back to Belgrade after the end of World War II in 1945. Although she was promised several roles in Yugoslav films, all projects were cancelled and she was treated unfavorably. After receipt of a letter she had written to President Tito, Rina began working as a co–production advisor in Avala Film. But she soon left Avala Film and moved to Lovćen Film.

She returned to the silver screen once, in the 1960 film War, about nuclear war fallout, directed by Veljko Bulajić. This was her last role. She got her role not though a studio, but through her husband asking nicely.

“Before the shooting of the film War began, I was approached by a very likable gentleman, that was the husband of Mrs. Ita Rine Miodrag, and in a very discreet, shy way, asked if we can talk and during that conversation, suggested to cast Ita. Honestly speaking, I have already completely forgotten about her. There was war, and they she didn't work for a very long time. She wasn't listed anywhere in cinematography as an active actress. I remembered her from her films. I suggested we meet. So we met, I don't know where in Zagreb or Belgrade, I cannot remember, but she impressed me. She made a strong impression, of a smart woman, an actress who didn't want to be in a film for no other reason, but to be filmed. She wanted to know about her role. I really liked that, so we made a deal.” 

As she suffered from asthma, Rina and her husband moved to Budva (then Yugoslavia, now Montenegro) in 1967. There, she took care of her husband, who was ill with sclerosis. Rina died on 10 May 1979 from an asthmatic attack during the great earthquake that leveled the capital of Montenegro. She was buried a few days later in Belgrade, in the presence of numerous film artists, admirers, friends and family. Her husband died next year.

Blorbo- (favorite character, character I think about the most) can’t decide between Mat or Tuon. Mat was my first blorbo and it’s very easy for me to write his POV so he seems like the obvious choice, but I might have to give it to Tuon since I always end up as her in webrings/my blog is named after her/there’s less competition 😂

Scrunkly- (my “baby”, character that gives me cuteness aggression, character that is So Shaped) Elayne. Elayne is chaotic bi. Elayne is a mad scientist. Elayne wants to solve all your problems with her bare hands and doesn’t know how to swear properly. Elayne is what happens when you let a Disney Princess make bespoke power tools funded by her entire military defense budget. Elayne is So Shaped and it’s a shame she never got to be Lanfear’s grad student. She would have killed.

Scrimblo Bimblo- (underrated/underappreciated fave) My first thought was Elaida, actually? I think people don’t appreciate her enough. She’s the unfortunate counterpart to luckier and more likeable characters and she sets them off beautifully. Of all WoT’s seer characters, she’s the one always getting her own predictions wrong. Of all the mentors, she’s the one whose favorite you don’t want to be. She has so much potential, and she knows it, and she makes precisely the wrong choices about how to develop it. She’s a tragic figure and there’s something so operatic and satisfying about her arc downward (though I’m not happy about her specific fate).

Glup Shitto- (obscure fave, character that can appear in the background for 0.2 seconds and I won’t shut up about it for a week) Where do I start? Setalle Anan, who had my dream job and is just in general a very cool lady. Talaan din Gelyn, who is an incredible YA protagonist stuck in a single obnoxious sub-subplot of a completely different genre instead of starring in the magic school coming-of-age story she deserves. Bode Cauthon, who is Budget Egwene and Girl Mat and therefore basically my teenage self-insert character. Let’s throw in Dana the darkfriend from WoT on Prime season 1, I am in love with her and it breaks my heart I’ll never see her again. And finally, the most Glup Shitto of them all: Ajimbura, the Kaensada Hills tribesman who makes the world’s most incredible entrance (drinking out of a human skull), has completely obscure motivations, and implies so much about Seanchan worldbuilding that is never explored in any other way.

Poor Little Meow Meow- (”problematic”/”unpopular/controversial/otherwise pathetic fave) #problematic fave Tuon, obviously, although tbh Gawyn is also a little bit my poor little meow meow? I just think he’s neat, structurally.

Horse Plinko- (character I would torment for fun, for whatever reason) Mat. Absolutely Mat. He complains so beautifully. Tuon I don’t want to torment in the same way, I just want to make her worse, which also feeds into the tormenting Mat thing.

Eeby Deeby- (character I would send to superhell) My first thought was Demandred. I think instead of going to Shara and attempting to be sympathetic, he should have gone to superhell again, and then the Dark One could have continued to have hilarious chats with him about matters in the rest of the world.

She hates when ‘normal’ people are accepted by ultimates.

Makoto Naegi- Photographer (Mostly wildlife and nature photography, with Sayaka helping him for some animal photography (: trans and bi <3 One of sayaka’s birds nests in his hair like all the time)

Kiyotaka Ishimaru- Ultimate Swordsman (AUTISTIC ICON, has trained in kendo since he was a kid, then was essentially given away to the Fujisaki clan by his very stressed dad. Semiverbal, rarely speaks.)

Chihiro Fujisaki- Ultimate Yakuza (Taka is her bodyguard! His family is in debt to hers, the Fujisaki clan is the most powerful in Japan. trans icon, of course, dates Sayaka! Very direct, though she’s far more delicate and polite when talking to taka, her best friend)

Sakura Oogami- Ultimate Nurse (Works as an EMT- her clan still is in martial arts, so she’s still very buff, she assists in injuries at the family dojo. Autistic Icon)

Asahina Aoi- Ultimate Gamer (ULTIMATE ADHD. streams and has a ton of fun, will ramble while breaking records, demigirl who loves her girlfriend sakura :)

Mukuro Ikusaba- Ultimate Chef (Works best with ‘cheap’ food, and making them taste good. a byproduct of growing up on the streets with junko, and junko being bored of the same old food they dug out of the trash. now works closely with junko for her teams’ nutritional needs! autistic and sapphic.)

Junko Enoshima- Ultimate Team Manager (there are SO many sports she can never get bored, and the professional scene is always changing! prefers coaching womens’ teams, because being an ultimate brings them more publicity and usually higher pay :)

Mondo Oowada- Ultimate Prince (OH MY BOY. trans adhd icon. now the crown prince of Novoselic, with a reagent in his place until he comes of age. His service dog Chuck is a maltese and an absolute sweetheart. Chihiro takes him under her wing to teach leadership. also dates taka later OF COURSE, though they’re poly and I may add more ppl to their relationship later.)

Celestia Ludenburg- Ultimate Musician (specializes in violin, most strings, though she can play any instrument. grew up poor, dedicated herself to an instrument and persona to cope)

Byakuya Togami- Ultimate Musician (Yep. two musicians. two catty trans gay icons about to throw down. they HATE each other and grew up as rivals. specialize in classical, they literally tore a professional orchestra full of grown adults apart trying to make them side with who was the best musician. they’re so good that they’re matched, and Hope’s Peak accepts them as one student and combined ultimate. they room together. they fight. Literally if one of them gets expelled, the other does too, so they’re STUCK. eventually they become literally inseparable and insufferable together like the WORST siblings. I love them.)

Sayaka Maizono- Breeder (animal handler) (Specializes in birds!!!!!! has songbirds on her shoulders all the time. will give unsettling animal facts without realizing they’re unsettling. sends her songbirds to serenade chihiro when they start dating <3)

Yasuhiro Hagakure- Gymnast (you see this tall goof who acts like an older brother to everyone and wonder HOW he’s a gymnast. he’s completely different in competitions, though still lighthearted. becomes a big brother figure to mukuro and junko especially <3 also trans bc i say so.)

Leon Kuwata- Traditional Dancer (he just. kinda hates it. it takes SO much work and effort but he takes to it naturally. his cousin kanon is NOT like in canon, instead she’s helpful. he’d literally rather be doing anything else. doesn’t know how to do anything like... basic either. can’t cook. cant do his own laundry. everything was dedicated to traditional japanese dancing before he attended HPA.)

Toko Fukawa- Engineer (writes schematics and is very good at it. gets VERY upset when her plans go wrong. her notes are orderly and perfect. host for their system!)

Syo- Mechanic (a factive of genocider syo, NOT an actual killer. she’s a protector mainly, and also is more adept at hands on skills when it comes to fixing things, her hands are less shaky. Her notes are a disaster and she does it to spite Toko.)

Hifumi Yamada- (???) (reserve course) Protagonist! My BOY. HIFUMI IS GOOD OKAY. He’s autistic and loves anime and gaming! he’s not particularly ultimate-leveled at them, or anything else! Attending Hope’s Peak as a reserve course student! At one point he joins the student council as a reserve course representative even if he’s only a freshman :) He’s also a moderator in Hina’s livestream chat, under the username of JusticeHammer, fastest ban hammer this side of the internet. He's internet friends with hina and sakura, and doesn’t realize Oh We Go To the same SCHOOL until he bumps into them. and realizes hina doesnt know what he looks like. but sakura does. its hilarious. he’s aroace, and during the year they’re locked in HPA, is in a queer platonic partnership with Hina and Sakura, while they’re dating each other. it’s great.)

Goodbye Despair! (second game)

Peko Pekoyama- Lucky student (ohohoh. her luck relies on her conviction. if she has doubts her bad luck strikes HARD. trans!, was taken in by Fuyuhiko’s family when she was a baby, grew up as just another kid in the family. They all expected Fuyu to go off to HPA on his own and then BOOM acceptance letter)

Fuyuhiko Kuzuryu- Programmer (He. gets so angry while coding. He has an array of rubber ducks to talk to and work through his coding issues with. trans of course. Very protective of Peko when people say she doesn’t have a ‘real’ ultimate. ADHD and Autistic)

Sonia Nevermind- Writer (Literary Girl) (Her family immigrated to Japan when she was young! She writes a lot of serial killer novels, murder mysteries and horror and all that! Trans and bi :)

Gundham Tanaka- Detective (YEAH my guy is a detective. still talks Like That. Trans and bi and he and Sonia were kinda-dating (t4t autistic power couple in the making) when things started happening. He spends some time with his cool older sister who he looks up to a LOT. He and Sonia talk through things together a lot, they both have those red string walls, one for murder cases, another for a fictional plot lmao.)

Mahiru Koizumi- Moral Compass (my GIRL. autistic. Her morals rely a lot on people taking responsibility and being reliable, and she ends up having to work through some biases she didn’t realize she had when she arrived at HPA. Is still protective of Hiyoko, though that protectiveness is spread a bit thinner to extend to the rest of the class.)

Hiyoko Saionji- Clairvoyant!!! (HI YES I COULD TALK ABOUT HER FOR DAYS. Has actual visions in dreams and when she suddenly faints, but doesn’t really realize they’re uhh Real Visions for a WHILE. uses her status as an ultimate clairvoyant to trick and bully kids when in school for a LONG time, though her homelife wasn’t great with her grandmother trying to find ways to make her visions more consistent. SHES ALSO 12 WHEN SHE JOINS THE 77TH CLASS. she’s just so advanced in academics and her ultimate is so interesting hope’s peak cant HELP but scout her early. she has SO many issues guys no one appreciates hiyoko enough, autistic gifted kid hiyoko my beloved.)

Akane Owari- Gambler (started gambling to help out her family and Got Good at it. is very very conscious of money and food like all the time. Runs the hope’s peak betting pools once she arrives. these ultimates bet on a lot of things. she ALWAYS wins. until she doesnt!!!)

Mikan Tsumiki- Martial Artist (ohhhh Mikan. Still anxious and clumsy (though not like THAT in canon) and literally no one looks at her and thinks Oh The ULTIMATE martial artist?? it isn’t until you see her in the ring that you understand. She started learning self defense as a kid because her (bad) parents essentially said she had to rely on and protect herself and no one else would help.)

Kazuichi Souda- Pop Idol (OH TRANS ICON? he’s nervous and paranoid about Everything still, though now it’s like. oh the entire world is always watching my every move this is Okay (: has the brightest neon album eras. he literally keeps up a like. weird chad persona when interacting with people because he’s masking how hard he’s constantly just internally screaming.)

Nagito Komaeda- Soldier (AHAHAH my mans got issues problems disorder he’s a messssss, this trans guy, this absolute gay. this boy leveled a city of thousands of people with his own hands and some bombs. Still has medical issues, but most of his like. treatments and medicine is hold hostage as long as he stays in line. believes the ends justify the means and anyone who dies to him is obviously weak, because look at him! he’s weak, but that doesn’t matter because he doesn’t have to be the strongest, he just has to be stronger than the weakest scum.)

Chiaki Nanami- Heir (OOF. Agender, uses any pronouns. Doesn’t really. enjoy being the heir. grew up with Byakuya in the same circles. she treats the economy and stock market and stuff like games. enjoys gaming but isn’t good at them. collects so many things. has halls full of collections. Her parents stopped controlling her once she was able to prove she had more money than them and could literally bankrupt them if she wanted.)

Hajime Hinata- Baseball Star (Chiaki’s best friend, his family was upper middle class until he hit it BIG as a baseball star. wants to do BIG things and wants to attend hope’s peak more than anything!! Doesn’t really think of baseball as his THING, just a means to an end! trans :)

Teruteru Hanamura- Biker Gang Leader (started with shaking down some jerks who didn’t pay their food and drink tabs at his mama’s restaurant. now he RUNS their tiny town. His siblings are essentially gang mascots, he works hard to keep them out of trouble (while bringing them to like. meetings where he ends up beating a dude almost to death. its fine). most of what he does it to get more money to keep the restaurant afloat and care for his mama with her health conditions.)

Nekomaru Nidai- Fashionista (the drama. the CHAOS. most people are like ohhh we can never understand this artistic genius when he’s literally just. vibing and has ADHD and a love for coffee. Works a lot on accessible clothing lines for disabled people! Also he and Kazuichi work together sometimes, Nekomaru is good at calming Kaz down and seeing like, the root of whatever problem and making it better. ALSO A TRANS ICON and just flaunts it.)

Imposter- In the hope’s peak days they are impersonating Ryota Mitarai, as a part of the 77th class. In the Killing Game they impersonate Mondo Oowada as the Ultimate Prince. They’re doin’ their best.

Ibuki Mioda- (???) (Izuru Kamakura) Protagonist! Gundham Tanaka’s older sister (though they’re in the same school year). Nonbinary and using just. an array of pronouns alongside she/her, and jokingly fights with gundham for neopronouns like MOM said it’s MY TURN on the rawrself pronouns. She attends the reserve course to stay at her brother’s side. She dresses loudly and acts even louder because !!! she wants to stand out!! in the middle of this drab reserve course hell!!  but when things go down, she wants to be someone, to be worthy of being her amazing brother’s big sister. so she accepts some offers.

NON-KILLING GAME:

Ryota Mitarai- Ultimate Analyst (stays in his room. He’s terrified of the outside world but fascinated by it. watches hope’s peak academy through security feeds, picking up on little details. he just wants to understand things but never looks at the big picture.)

Chisa Yukizome- Ultimate Boxer (Homeroom teacher!! She’s working really hard and believes in everyone! Some are intimidated by talent, but she’s never hurt anyone outside of the ring! Dating Kyosuke)

Juzo Sakakura- Ultimate Student Council President (Has anger issues, though his work at reigning them in assisted in becoming an Ultimate. Was responsible for security and the Hope’s Peak student council. Dating Kyosuke)

Kyosuke Munakata- Ultimate Housekeeper (Meticulous, works himself to the BONE even if he’s good enough to not have to do that. Is working on establishing another Hope’s Peak! Dating Chisa and Jozu!!!)

Seiko Kimura- Ultimate Blacksmith (GIVE MY GIRL KNIVES!! She’s an anxious gal, always wearing a facemask that filters the air in her forge because she has some respiratory problems. she prefers making more decorative pieces like an artist, but sometimes can create utilitarian pieces or tools to fit specific needs. Still a doormat)

Ruruka Ando- Ultimate Pharmacist (She constantly asks Seiko for new tools for her developments in medicine, saying its all for the advancement of humanity, so Seiko denying any request is SELFISH, though she never thinks to make anything for seiko’s health issues. Dating Izayoi. Specializes in medicine for mental health. Not Doing Great :)

Sonosuke Izayoi- Ultimate Confectioner (He loves sweets. LOVES them. Creates things that look plain, ordinary. but taste so GOOD you CRY and maybe ascend for a little bit. sometimes Ando makes cool new drugs to put in the sweets, who knows! It’s a mystery! He always has like. a huge refrigerated case of fresh cakes, and constantly has a lollipop in his own specialty recipe in his mouth.)

yuri on ice is quite literally a ride. in my humble opinion, while it is short and at times a little cheesy, stands today as one of the most emotional pieces of media ive ever consumed.

my personal experiences at the time may bias my review, but i think that yuri on ice has an excellent grasp on creating fun and balanced charscters, and a good perception into what anxiety feels like. Yuuri Katsuki is an excellent protagonist and has such an incredible lense to view the story from that i think it stands as one of the best usages of unreliable narrator in mainstream media.

the plot is both insanely simple and heart clenchingly good, that even without the romance aspect youd be rooting for yuuri the WHOLE way. While i cant vouch for the actual sports aspect as i still fall over on my ass in the ice rink, i know that it has gotten the approval of SEVERAL professional skating legends like Jonathan Weir (who, btw, is one of the first openly gay international ice skaters in the world) and Evgenia Medvedeva (who i love very very much).

The scope YOI set up for issues under competitive sport and being a representative for your country are shockingly real and nuanced. As a person who HAS competed internationally and been described as a prodigy when I was younger, the narratives that followed Viktor, Yuuri, Yurio, and all the other characters were... very relatable. The character development that is shown alongside the raw flaws that every character started with were ones that do exist in society today and I think were excellently addressed.

In terms of the LGBTQ+ and romance aspect of the show—I think YOI is an excellent example of queer media. Aside from the fact that it is barely fetishized (at least not for fanservice), it explores the idea of sensuality and gender expression as something that is ACTUALLY SIGNIFICANT TO THE PLOT (see: Yuuri Katsuki's short skate performance Eros) rather than a 'quirky character trait' or gag. The romance is also excellently made in my opinion and aside with my very few pickings at its pacing—I think that Viktuuri was well developed and satisfying to see bloom. As a young questioning queer person at the time of watching (now proudly bi and gnc!) YOI was a hallmark for media that actually depicted being LGBTQ+ as a comfortable and NORMAL experience. There was little to absolutely NONE discrimination or mentions of homophobia, and it didnt hugely overshadow the plot of the anime itself which largely revolved around the development of Yuuri Katsuki and Viktor Nikiforov as both athletes and people. It was a reminder that LGBTQ+ media doesnt always have to be 'tragic' or 'realistic' in order to be popular.

tldr: If you're watching it purely for the romance, I dont recommend it because it is a sports anime through and through. HOWEVER yuri!!! on ice excellently handles character development, plot execution, and real world issues as an anime. It has EXCELLENT MUSIC that makes me feel so many things AND choreography that blesses my eyeballs whenever i happen upon it again AND a cast of characters that i loved so much that i still remember everyones names until now (n u can quote me on that)—drawing the conclusion that it really is deserving of at least some of its hype.

TLDR tldr; yes oh my god aj please watch it.

Hi all! I am the Aesthetician, I am not new to Tumblr, but fairly new to writeblr. I was here before in the beginning of the year trying to do some work on @bybyebitheway but life decided to happen and got sidetracked. Fortunately, I've returned and am taking another shot at not only Bi The Way but also a few WIPs I've started since then. Hopefully you don't mind taking a peek and reading a few of them.
