My hottest Bionicle take is that G2 Pohatu should have been Master of air.
Clears up the whole Earth and Stone thing.
Lewa crontrols plantlife in G2 anyway.
Pohatu uses mostly tornados in those year one animations.
His weapons are boomerangs with wind turbine details in the centre of them.
Windswept desert thing.

Concept art for G2 Tahu battling a skull spider. 11/10 the doofy spider face makes it looks like it’s super excited to get a hug!
Also, shooting caged people down from the cave ceiling isn’t such a great idea.

Before anyone asks, yes, I HAVE heard of the 2025 Bionicle leaks. I just refuse to believe anything until we get a photo of a black and white printout of concept art for a store display. It's just protocol.

And for the next instalment of Colour-Shifting Shenanigans, we have the Protectors of Okoto.
This was just a quick and dirty one, bare minimum effort, more to test if it was doable than to actually make anything out of it, but I was actually really happy with how a lot of these turned out, so decided to show off.
The idea here was that I was wondering what the Protectors would look like if they were G1 Turaga, but the answer there is probably just "the exact same but with G1 parts and different masks" and that's not what I was going for, since that's basically how I'd imagine them as Toa. So, to make them Turaga, I found an image of Narmoto from one of the early webisodes when he was wearing his cloak/robe, and then played with the hue to make the others into basically movie-style Turaga. Or just the other Protectors pulling the "wise elder is actually shredded" gag on the other Toa. We love a team bit.
Most of these were surprisingly easy; Vizuna is the only one that required multiple layers. His eyes were the only ones that didn't end up matching his official colour perfectly, so I tweaked them to make them yellow. They were initially hot pink. Not sure I'm entirely happy with the result, and I'm not fully on board with Kivoda either, but I do like the rest, so I'm satisfied with them for now.

If I had a nickel for every time a popular, story driven LEGO theme introduced a new continuity, met with mixed to mediocre reception. Only to later share a radically different, earlier iteration of the story which involves TIME TRAVEL and sticks closer to the lore of the original series. Immediately hailed as a far superior concept which should have been moved forward with. Ignoring the fact that most of the criticisms levelled toward the final product were more a consequence of the new stories execution than its concept.
I’d have two nickels. Which isn’t a lot but it’s weird that it’s happened twice.

Happy 810nicle, one and all! Little something different this time around-- G2 again, this time the Elemental Creatures. This was a concept I was quite fond of-- beasts with Toa-Tier power and at least Matoran-level intelligence that could mix and match their elemental powers with those of their Toa allies. I opted for a wider spread of animals as bases this time around, seeing as Bionicle on the whole has a bit of a problem with associating any animal with the desert outside of "Scorpion" and Terak and Melum were functionally the same, set-wise.
Profiles under the cut:
At first glance, Terak is decidedly unimpressive. Small, soft, and entirely blind, Terak is reliant on an enhanced sense of smell and the ability to feel the tremors in the earth to navigate the world around them. Do not let their size fool you, however-- they are no less powerful or resilient than any of the other Elemental Creatures, able to rend the earth asunder with their mighty claws, not unlike Onua himself. Of all the creatures Terak is far and away the most placid, demonstrating a fondness for tummy rubs and other acts of affection.
Ketar only associates with the Toa out of convenience. Gruff and standoffish, Ketar prefers to do things their own way without anyone else, Toa, Turaga, Matoran, or even the other Elemental creatures trying to prod them in any other direction. Naturally, they chafe under the company of the sociable and open Pohatu, whose insistence on working as a team runs counter to Ketar's entire MO, and barely seems to notice when his serpentine partner starts gnawing on him in protest.
Uxar is far and away the friendliest and most open member of all the Elemental creatures. Deeply curious, she skirts the closest to Matoran civilization, and deeply enjoys playing with the inhabitants that give her the time of day. Only problem is she doesn't entirely know her own strength and is likely to tear down entire trees if she gets too excited. Fortunately, she makes a solid partner for the outgoing and energetic Toa of Air Lewa, who's more than capable of tanking her brand of roughhousing.
Melum is the strongest of all the elemental creatures on a physical level. A beast of burden, Melum acts accordingly, carrying what the others can't with quiet dignity and determination. In leiu of traditional Toa tools, Melum's enormous horns act as a channel for their elemental power, charging and dispersing powerful blasts of ice. Though largely well-mannered, Melum has a bad habit of chewing on loose fabric on anyone who happens to be standing nearby.
Ikir is a big bird who fully believes himself to be the greatest creature ever put on the island. Strutting about with all the arrogance of a peacock, Ikir will show off at every available opportunity, and particularly likes to demonstrate his flying skills, shooting jets of flame out of the exhaust points on his wings. This grandstanding attitude, not to mention penchant towards confrontation, often puts the bird at odds with Tahu, his designated Toa partner. The irony that he is prone to the exact same behavior is lost on Mata Nui's resident Toa of Fire.
Akida is the largest of the Elemental creatures, big enough to serve as a steed for most of the Toa, and also the most enigmatic and elusive. She comes and goes as needed, rising out of the murky depths to assist and vanishing just as quickly as she came. Though undeniably powerful, this unpredictability can prove frustrating, especially to Gali, who often finds herself struggling to keep her own team together.

So, for a while now, I've been kinda entertaining the idea of more-or-less wholesale porting the G2 Protectors into a G1 AU. (Or at least, a more G1-derived setting, depending on how loose I feel like I want to play with things at a given moment.)
Because one thing that struck me as genuinely interesting about G2's approach, was how the protectors simultaneously fulfilled a very similar and yet very distinct role from the Turaga.
Both are leaders of villages, with greater elemental power than the Matoran/villagers, yet considerably less than a full Toa. Yet while the general conception of the Turaga as old and decrepit is perhaps overstated in fanon, there is still a noticeable difference between their demeanor, build, and general presentation, than the way the Protectors came across in G2's smattering of story content.
Particularly notable is the attention drawn to this difference in one of the early animations, where Narmoto is initially presented as a hunchbacked, cloaked figure, only to fairly dramatically throw aside the cloak and reveal his barrel chest, shoulder-mounted minigun, and those flame whip/sword/things. Like, that felt intentional, to draw the parallel with the Turaga and then subvert it. In addition to that, there is the second Ryder Wyndham book, where the Protectors go on their own adventure in parallel to the Toa venturing through the city, which also paints them as acting in a more proactive manner. So despite the similarities, the Protectors fit a unique niche, coming across as more proactive and powerful in a direct sense, while perhaps lacking some of the same level of subtlety and wisdom as a Turaga.
---
So basically, my idea is to essentially slot them in as an additional, optional stage in the life cycle, an intermediary state between being a Matoran and being a Toa.
The benefit to this is having someone there who can partially fulfill both the duties associated with a Toa or Turaga as needed, but in a more flexible way, without the power investment of the former or the time investment of the latter. Again, they may not be as capable of the same kind of feats as a Toa, or have the same depth of wisdom as a Turaga, but they can still fill in the gaps as needed, and lead and defend their people in a way most Matoran would still struggle to. Depending on regional tradition and whether circumstances allow, it could also serve as a good way to gain experience on the way to becoming full Toa, rather than being thrust directly into the role and forced to sink or swim like the Toa Metru were.
---
Also, with @outofgloom 's input, I think I've finally settled on a name for them, since "Protector" obviously doesn't quite fit into the setting or language: Vaaki, as derived from Va-Aki; "Lesser Valor", befitting their intermediary status as lesser Toa.
(I was initially less inclined to go with that since it sounded too similar to Vahki, but in hindsight I like it for exactly that reason. Assuming Vaaki are like, not a common practice but at least a known-of one, then Nuparu naming his creations to sound similar, despite the different derivation, would be an intentional choice. A nod to the similarities between the role of a Vaaki and the original, perhaps overly optimistic, intention for the Vahki to serve... and extra bitter irony when the latter ultimately wound up being tools of oppression instead. So yeah, rather than detracting, the resemblance could add additional interesting context and history.)
---
The matter of how they are made, mechanically speaking, I'm a bit more uncertain of, but at least for now the idea is still continuing literally with that idea of them as essentially half-Toa. Basically, there would be some way to control the process of transformation from a Toa Stone, only partially releasing the stored power and conserving the rest, which in turn results in a partial transformation. One side-effect of this could be some odd body/limb proportions like Narmoto and Izotor in G2 had. And then later, if it is felt that a Toa is needed more, then the remainder of that power could be used to complete the transformation, and grant the full strength of form and elemental power.
In essence, this approach would be a way to utilize the Metru toa stones on Mata Nui, aside from summoning the Toa Mata; in my version of the island where there are multiple villages per Wahi, those toa stones would have been used to make some of the Matoran into Vaaki to run the additional settlements, alongside the Turaga Metru still leading the primary ones.
---
On the other hand, part of me prefers the idea of Vaaki as a full and distinct additional step, rather than just "half-baked" Toa. Particularly in a more loose take on things, such as my G3 concept from a few months back, where adding this additional stage of things is easier to smoothly incorporate, it feels like it makes more sense that way. The issue there being, if a Toa Stone is still how a Vaaki becomes a Toa, by what other means would a Matoran become a Vaaki in the first place? To that, I'm not yet sure.
