The results for chil-chil’s BL Award 2024 are out!

I didn't vote for all the categories, so I'm only gonna talk about the ones I did vote for. Let's see:

Comics: I voted for His Little Amber. It got 2nd! I'm still waiting for the cast reveal for the BLCD! It's been 2 months since they announced a BLCD, but the cast has not been revealed yet. I'm anxious to know!!

Series: I voted for Fake Fact Lips Break because I adore them. It got 10th. The 1st place was Given, which I'm not mad about <3

Emotional: I voted for Kono te wo Hanasanaide 2 and it got 1st!! I'm happy. I love them!

Fetish: I voted for Minami-kun Wants to be Teased by that Voice, because obviously I have a voice fetish! I believe every seiyuu fan can relate to that. This BLCD was SO erotic *__*. It got 7th. The 1st place was Sex Drop 2 which I actually haven't listened to yet ^^;; I need to.

Next Generation: I voted for Kitayama kun & Minamiya kun because they're cute. Waiting to listen to the BLCD. It got 4th.

BLCD: I voted for Futari Asobi because Chiaki was so so SO freaking cute there. SO CUTE. Sadly it's not in the Top 10. The 1st place was Takara no Biidoro, which I'm also happy about. Ryouta and Yukke were really great there.

Seiyuu: I obviously voted for my beloved Chiaki. I also voted for Ryouta as my 2nd option. Chiaki got 6th which is pretty impressive. Ryouta wasn't in the Top 10. The 1st place was Soma.

And honestly (and I have to be honest here) I'm kinda over him getting 1st place almost every year. he's won a couple of years in a row: 2024, 2023, 2022, 2021 (2nd) and 2020. It reached the point where I can no longer listen to his BLCDs. I really think he's too overrated. Sorry Soma. I used to enjoy his roles, but lately I feel that he sounds the same in every role. I'm over it. :/

Impressive that Makonyan got 9th when he's only done 2 new BLCDs this year (the rest were sequels). He's powerful alright! Well deserved. Hopefully he'll do many new ones in the future. I also love that Yukke got 7th, so the two Kobayashi are very close to each other ^^

Some honorable mentions:

I wrote comments about most of my votes, and surprisingly my comment about Chiaki was published!! ^___^ They never published my comments before so I was happy. (I'm really glad this specific comment was chosen because the Seiyuu category is the most important one for me. The second is BLCD.)

This comment about Egu made me laugh (he got 8th):

Loved that Ryouta retweeted that his BLCD got 1st place!

Shogo also retweeted that Pittosporum got 9th place in the Series category (he's done the BLCD with ChibaSho)

I love when seiyuu interact with the BL wins. I wish more would do that.

I'm excited to think that on next year's BL Award we would probably get to vote for the His Little Amber and Pink heart Jam BLCDs! (which we only got announcements for but no cast reveal yet)

Best 23 of BL 2023 - Quirky Awards

SHOCK & AWE AWARDS

1. Biggest BL surprise of 2023:

The last 3 months of 2023 in general got my biggest WTF award.

GMMTV fielding OffGun AND TayNew in the same quarter while also airing Last Twilight (arguably one of their best BLs ever)

That they ALSO optioned 3 JBLs

That there's a high heat omegaverse BL staring Pavel

That there were 20 BLs airing and none of them Korean.

With 5 VAMPIRE BLs announced for next year

But my prize in this category goes to My Dear Gangster Oppa.

It's just crazy:

Thai talent, Korean money + IP (this is adapted from a manwha) airing on a Chinese channel (iQIYI). Plus it was GOOD and made smart reuse of a pair who richly deserved it. I'm delighted by the eclectic insanity of this production. And wonder if any other film genre could even do anything like this.

2. The “that country did WHAT?” award:

The 8th Sense from Korea?!

I mean, seriously?! Dealing with metal health, suicide, darkness, therapy, age gap, & first time love BUT FROM KOREA? And then openness and casual boyfriend physical affection? What's next? An actual hard fought coming out narrative with an HEA? Gay domesticity and families?

Careful Korea, you'll strain something. Possibly your own culture and film industry.

I should stop having expectations of Korea, they keep surprising me.

Runners up: Korea letting OnlyOneOf do Bump Up Business not to mention that OmegaX thing. AND Korea adapting Why R U? What are you up to, Korea? Qua? Is this a coded message? Should we send help? Do you need snacks?

3. Biggest casting whoa! where did you come from? award:

GeminiFourth in My School President.

Seriously? Babies what? How did GMMTV find you? How do you exist? How is BL this lucky?

4. That studio did WHAT now? award:

GMMTV putting EarthMix into Moonlight Chicken.

And then doubling down with G4 as the damn sides.

Fucking genius.

5. I’m sad you were ignored award:

Destiny Seeker.

It's just a really fun little Thai pulp, the pairs were good, silly dialogue, plus consent and other good rep. I enjoyed it. No one talked about it AT ALL.

6. 2023 BL That Actually Made Me Lose My Mind Award?

Laws of Attraction. -The casting, the crazy story, the soapy drama! But specifically: Film playing Charn - the range of his smiles alone. GLORIOUS

I mean I Feel You Linger in the Air also sparked something in me, but LoA drove me actually nuts.

7. Best story 2023:

La Pluie

I know, you're surprised, right? At the time I didn't chat much about it but I really enjoyed the discourse others were having. I love anything that really examines the fated mates (soulmates) trope and the idea of "the one". What a clever way to do that. (This is one reason UWMA is my favorite Thai BL.)

This one reminded me of the way Color Rush approached allegory and that's no bad thing. Such an impressive little piece.

8. Best narrative structure 2023 award:

Unintentional Love Story.

I know this may seem a simplistic pick. But I love the tidiness of this no frills contemporary romance, how the culture of work and personal ethics and corruption fight against the main character's affection and integrity. Poor baby boy is driven into a corner and then punished for it. But it is punishment he feels he deserves, and so it is up to his (now) ex to figure out what went wrong and why.

It's just great. I love it when no one is stupid or wrong, it's just impossible circumstances and unintentional love deeply felt.

9. Best 2023 dialogue (script) award:

Jun & Jun

Never before has Korea laced a BL with that much perfectly executed innuendo. It was a master class. I didn't know you could be that lascivious in Korean, quite frankly. Plus the way the 2 Juns constantly seamlessly transition between formal register (work, public - where they are boss/employee) to informal register (when they are alone and age mates + childhood sweethearts).

Beautiful to hear and watch.

10. Favorite scene 2023:

The dub con scene in I Cannot Reach You because I AM TRASH for an out of control seme. I'm sorry I just AM.

I have said it before, I will say it again, NO ONE DOES THIRST like Japan. And when that thirst bubbles over, it is heart-clenching and very hot.

11. The most rewatchable BL of 2023 award:

Our Dating Sim

That scene where they lie on the floor + the stolen kiss + giggle? Come on, it should be on comfort repeat in war rooms. It could bring world peace.

12. Best performance of a queer actor in a leading role, 2023:

Fluke in Make a Wish.

It was fun to see him as an irreverent immortal and while I love OhmFluke I also really enjoyed this new pairing. It was a genuine pleasure to watch.

13. Best pining 2023:

The moot pining in Tokyo in April is...

Boys, seriously? Japan must you destroy us like this? Hurts so good.

14. Best wingman 2023 (The Namgoong Award)

The Private Lessons pair showing up in Love Class 2.

I know it was only a cameo, but SERIOUSLY? Thank you SO MUCH Korea! A big studio picking up a Strongberry pairing? I love you.

Seriously tho between them, Taiwan & Korea tried for ALL THE CAMEOS this year.

17. Well aren't you two just the prettiest? award:

18. LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

Bah Vinh in Vian & Mr Cinderella 2. I did like either show but I loved him in them. Especially the make outs.

Yes you have chemistry with all the boys in Vietnam and you kiss beautifully. But it's okay now honey, you have the crown. Relax, you're stressing us out.

20. Biggest disappointment of 2023:

You Are Mine

Seriously Taiwan, AGAIN you disappoint me with an Office BL? You're Taiwan, land of offices and suits. This should be YOUR SETTING TO WIN. And yet... argh. I mean it wasn't bad. But it wasn't good either. Stop it Taiwan, do better.

Runners up? Between Us, Chains of Heart, Dangerous Romance - this was a HOTLY contested category.

+ 2 Winners in the sub-category of FUCK YOU FOR THAT ENDING award:

The Director who Buys Me Dinner - I mean this nicely but: you have your lane now Korea, stop hurting us, that's Japan's responsibility and they do it better.

I Feel You Linger In the Air - I'm just hugely disappointed. Thailand ALMOST got its second 10/10 from me, but that damn ending.

In fact, all the queer characters in this show were treated with great integrity.

Runners up? The found family cast of Love in Translation and the Rainbow Rice Cakes in The New Employee.

The results for chil-chil’s BL Award 2023 are out!

Well. There’ve been better years I must say. For me at least.

The only thing I got right was Best Next Generation: I voted for Kono Te wo Hanasanaide and it got 1st place. I love it mostly because Chiaki was in this BLCD, but I also like the original manga. They’re a cute couple, and Aji & Chiaki did really well in the BLCD. 

For Best Comic I voted for Pink Heart Jam, and it got 2nd place which was nice. Still waiting for a BLCD with my dream cast for this couple!

For Best Series I chose Mask Danshi wa Koishitakunai no ni but it didn’t even make the Top 20. Weird. But hey, it got an OAD while others not so that’s a plus! 

For Best Erotic I chose pop one's cherry, which got 15th place. 

I’ve said before that the most important categories for me are Best BLCD and Best Seiyuu. 

For some unknown reason, they only published the first 10 choices for the Best Seiyuu. I wonder why not the other 10 as well. :/

So, for Best BLCD I chose Fake Fact Lips, with Kuma x Chiaki. It got 5th place. I really like this BLCD, their banter is always hilarious to listen to. Also, the manga art is beautiful. They’re a gorgeous couple *-* 

You can guess my choice for Best Seiyuu but sadly, this year, he didn’t make the Top 10. Maybe he’s in the Top 20 but they didn’t publish the rest :( 

Soma got 1st place again. His second time I think. He also got 2nd place before. Takuchan got 2nd place, and their BLCD 25ji, Akasaka de 2 got 1st place.

I’ll be waiting for next year’s round. Maybe I’ll have more luck with my favs :(

My nomination for Most Heartbreaking BL Scene of 2023: the Laws of Attraction airport scene!!

Tinn wakes up with his bf gone, handcuffed to a bed, he rips the bed apart with his bare hands and runs to the airport catching Charn right before he leaves, and Charn is like 'i tricked you, you idiot! I never loved you! I'm making a deal with the villain and trading the justice you've been chasing for money!'

And Tinn is just

Just so steadfast and certain

He doesn't believe it, even tho just a little while ago that would absolutely have been something Charn was capable of. Tinn sees right through him, so sure of Charn's love for him, so certain of Charn's goodness. And in the face of that, Charn just falls apart

And the part that really kills me in this scene is the way Tinn takes Charn into his arms and comforts him, even tho he doesn't know what Charn has planned, even tho Charn just tried to hurt him with this lie, and just!!!! Tinn's certainty in their bond and the changes he's seen in him, his love and care for this man, the way he is so utterly unmoved by this feigned betrayal

Ready to offer his comfort and support. Seeing so clearly Charn's own suffering at this parting... it's just the fucking best

Background Noise in Marahuyo Project

Marahuyo Project was good, but above al else, I greatly appreciated the visuals!

Like King being a king.

Because beyond King's tattoo (King on top of the World),

His vest when he arrives on the island is fishes and fishes spill on him which connects him to the water as if the sea is reclaiming him.

And his school reinforces that.

I'm unsure if the show did this on purpose, but in The Odyssey, Ino is the one who saves Odysseus from drowning in the sea.

Poseidon created a storm because he was upset and Ino warned Odysseus to abandon the ship but he refused believing he could navigate the storm and became lost at sea, ("Lost at Sea" shirt)

So Ino had to rescue Odysseus by throwing him a protective veil so he could safely get to shore with his wrecked ship.

So whenever King is most connected to his friends, his connection to the sea is obvious like when the mermaid scandal happened and his friends took the blame, his shirt had dolphins on it.

And the final pose for the group after their punishment makes the mermaid a part of their group (and Ino) while blocking out the historical betrayer.

When they went looking for Lili, King's shirt had a shark on it.

And when King helped Ino, more fishes.

Basically, he is where he is meant to be, but it's not all about the water because butterflies are also a symbol of transformation.

So they can be seen as people transform into who they were meant to be.

And embracing who they also were.

Then there is the obvious symbolism of Archie's irritated neck since he bears a heavy cross, literally and figuratively.

He always wears the rosary and plans to join the priesthood, but he struggles with the his internal conflict regarding his sexuality and his faith.

Of course I appreciated all the rainbows.

Even beyond the Pride flag.

Venice's rainbow heart button and Lorie's rainbow bag strap.

The rainbow hands in what looks to be the "Fight the Power" pose

And all the clothing and accessories calling out the binary (pro trans)

However, as a color demon, I loved that Marco was ALWAYS in red because he was the biggest red flag and the violent one.

However, my personal favorite shirts were "COLOR should be not block equality"

"My heart is at the sea" mostly knowing what happened to Christina.

And the "DUMP HIM" shirt!
