I love most of my friends in the black comm. However, all I seem to hear is white people this, white people that. It's gotten to the point where I think I just need to step away from the black comm now. Not all white ppl are the same or are ignorant, like not all black ppl are ghetto or whatever. I honestly feel like there's more segregation and hatred in the black comm than in other communities.

We'd be an unstoppable force...
I wish there was more allegiance between the minority communities here at GW - particularly between the Black and Latino communities. I feel like aside from Best of Both Worlds at the beginning of the year, you rarely see the two groups interact on a structural and programming level. Obviously there's some overlap in friend groups, but even that is relatively limited. I'm always shocked by the lack of integration we have on this campus, and if I could have helped ameliorate one issue during my time at GW, it would have been this.
Since we're all considered minorities at this PWI, we should take the time to get to know and respect one another's communities (i.e. Latino not Spanish; Africa is a continent not a country, Raas and Bhangra are two totally different things, etc.). It hurts me when I hear minority students say things like "Oh, I can't go to Black Male Appreciation Dinner, isn't that only for the black community?" or "I'm not going to buy an APIA Awareness Month shirt, I'm not Asian". It's the kind of ignorance and disinterest I'd expect from the white community, not from students who know what it's like to feel marginalized, ostracized or only seen/appreciated for their ethnicity and not their personality.
We'd be an unstoppable force if we could just come together.
Thetreeamrants,
I completely agree! In fact, we share very similar views on this issue: http://theblackcollegian.tumblr.com/post/47128703106/diversity-is-not-the-issue-community-is

Black Love on Campus: "It's Quite Difficult [at a PWI]"
I think its interesting about the Black love at pwi's. I attend a pwi and it's quite difficult. I could be wrong but I think so especially since I'm a commuter student. Likely the only way to find love would be to either live on campus, get into the nphc greek life or other organizations. Sad but true. I think I'm going to test out 2 of those theories just to see.

"Affirmative Action is not the reason why I am at this institution."
What does it mean to be Black at a Predominantly White Institution? This collegian takes a unique approach at expressing his own experience a PWI.

Quote
"The greater the compatibility between the student and the institution, the higher the probability that the student will complete all degree requirements." And because predominantly white institutions were obviously not created with black students' needs and culture in mind, black students are particularly at risk of not "fitting" the institution.

"Dear White People" (Concept Trailer) - a satire about being a Black face in a white place. "This satire explores the issues of race and identity from the viewpoints of four Black students at a fictitious predominantly white school." (CNN)
It's amazing how relevant the concept is to this blog. Can anyone relate?
Check out CNN's feature of the trailer!
And click here to help bring this film to theaters!

About This Blog...
My name is Joanne Cazeau. I am a recent graduate of the George Washington University. I started this blog when I was a sophomore. This is our story...
According to the University’s demographics, I represent one of approximately 730 students (7%) of the students on campus who identify as Black/African-American. As a Black woman at a primarily white institution (PWI), I can honestly say that my collegiate experience has been unique thus far, although hurtful at times.
Prompted by influential speakers such as Jeff Johnson (during our campus BSU’s Black History Celebration), and by the accounts of my friends’ experiences, I decided to make a blog that is dedicated to portraying the Black collegial experience, especially at primarily white institutions (PWIs).
Let’s throw out some statistics, shall we? According to the United States census, in 2010, 2.9 million blacks were enrolled in college. The 2012 US census shows that 3,258,000 blacks, 25 and older, held a Bachelor’s degree. The same census shows 217,000 blacks in the same age group with a Professional degree, and 224,000 with a Doctoral degree.
The bottom line is – there are a lot of us, and each one of us can detail our own, unique experience.
This is an open blog; submissions are welcomed. Although this is a rather serious topic, humor is certainly welcomed. Feel free to post memes, comments, your personal experiences, pictures, gifs, links, and videos; I only ask that they are appropriate and not offensive.
What is the Black Collegiate Experience? How is the nature of this experience altered in PWIs?
Let’s talk.

This is an interesting piece by poet Zora Howard of the Strivers Row. Titled "Boat Shoe," it details her experience, as an African-American woman, at an Ivy League. I actually attended this event; I had my eyes closed the entire time - just soaking it in. Her words were so real; so true.
The video freezes momentarily throughout, but it is worth the watch!
