We answered an ask about the best way to get into noise music on our Cohost
Nightmare Lyre's recommendations:
I think before looking for specific artists its a good idea to examine your own preconceptions about music itself. For example, electric guitars where considered noise back in the day, before everyone got used to the texture they added to the music.
As such its important to keep an open mind to sounds you otherwise would think of as "not music" before going in. The sound of someone scraping a cheese grater up to their microphone could be the electric guitar of an alternate timeline.
Alright enough pretentious stuff, artists: -Our collaborator and Norwegian noise pioneer NXP's "One Minute Later" album is a great starting point, consisting of 1-minute long songs in many different styles of noise, allowing you to get a taste for the genre without jumping into the deep end of hour long compositions: https://nxp-music.bandcamp.com/album/one-minute-later
Here's some other ones to check out:
-Strangerous: https://strangerous.bandcamp.com/album/chant -Lasse Marhaug: https://marhaug.bandcamp.com/album/alive-2007 -Boris & Merzbow: https://borismerzbow.bandcamp.com/album/gensho
Gigakoops' recommendations:
For me what really got me into noise music was the live experience. There's something about being put in front of this sort of music in a live setting that sort of puts me in a meditative-like state. It's really hard to describe how or why, but oddly enough I found my self relaxed and at one with the music when it was being performed in front of me. It also helps that sometimes people do wild things in these concerts, like destroying audio equipment or using things that are obviously not instruments as instruments, so it's also fun to watch when that happens!
I'll also include some artists that are noise-adjacent that I recommend:
-Lightning Bolt (noise rock duo from Boston with lots of harsher elements, also really catchy): https://lightningbolt.bandcamp.com/album/fantasy-empire
-Clipping. (noise rap group, their earlier stuff is especially harsh-noise-influenced. I should actually listen to more of their stuff): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1tFXIy7OWos
-Shining (Norwgian jazz metal band with industrial and noise elements, really genre-fusing, especially their "blackjazz" era (aka blending black metal with jazz, alongside lots of industrial elements)): https://shining.bandcamp.com/album/blackjazz

The Heshoo Beshoo Group -  Amabutho
The Heshoo Beshoo Group - Armitage Road (1971, JLP 4021). This beautiful spiritual jazz LP coming from South Africa. Fabulous music, ranging from Coltranesque uplifting style to more funky rhythm a la Black Jazz label. Both french and South African press are invisibles and highly sought after. ....Heshoo Beshoo means moving forward with force. On so many levels this recording is a strong statement of self determination, creativity and freedom in the midst of the brutual subjugation of black South Africans by the Apartheid government. The LP had a limited release in South Africa as well as a subsequent release in France. In 1971 Henry and Stanley were approached by guitarist Adolphus "Bunny" Luthuli to get a band together to compete in the Alco Best Band Competition at Jabulani Stadium in April 1971. Bunny had played with Henry in Almon's Jazz 8. This approach was the genesis of South Africa's greatest soul jazz band The Drive comprising the Sithole brothers Henry, Danny and Stanley, Bunny Luthuli, Mike Makhalemele, Lucky Mbatha, Nelson Magwaza and Anthony Saoli.....

Hey loves! I am so inspired by this man right now. I was listening to his Fresh Air interview on NPR this past weekend where he talks about his life, his new album Hollywood Africans, and his forthcoming work in Jean-Michel Basquiat. Then I get the CultureType email and see this Breakfast Club interview so I had to share! I loved his discussion about not critiquing music because it is the perspective of a person, the songs of their soul. He also mentions Quincy Jones and his desire to do a project on the music of the African diaspora from Brazil, Haiti, Cuba, Trindad-Tobago, New Orleans, and so forth. Wouldn’t that be beautiful?! I wish I could say more, but I need to get back to reading for class and my exams. Enjoy the video!
