It's gloomy here in NJ. And since my daughter wanted to have tea this afternoon, I thought it'd be a great time to finish this beautiful fantasy, "When We Were Birds" by @ayalloydbanwo from @doubledaybooks. This Trinidad-based fantasy about love and death has had me in a grip and finally I'll get the opportunity to finish it. #blackspeculativefiction #blackfantasy #caribbeanbooks #bookstagram #booksandtea #blackbooks #caribbeanfantasy #goodblackreads #blacklitchallenge #blackdiaspora #diversespines #wellreadblackgirl #blackgirlsreadtoo #fantasybooks #literature #bookstagram #currentlyreading #readsoullit #rastafari #rasta #afternoontea #tealatte #readcaribbean #readblackwomen #readblackbooks #bookstagramfeature https://www.instagram.com/p/Cd9LQnJva8q/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Can you believe we’re already entering the second month of 2021? I would have liked to say this year started better than 2020, but it’s January, and here in Portugal, we’re on a full lockdown. I don’t know when I’ll go back to Lisbon to attend university because we’re strictly on online classes indefinitely. Still, if you want February to be a good reading month, check out some of these February…

I was feeling deeply guilty/inadequate about the amount of time I was making for reading this month. Was part of the problem going down to one physical therapy appointment a week instead of two? Jumpstarting those days reading a book in a waiting room definitely increased my need to find time to read throughout the day. Anyway, now that I am stacking up all my reads for #februarywrapup, it doesn’t look so bad. As you can see my reading was dominated by the #blacklitchallenge, though I am feeling sad about all those excelleny books on my TBR that I didn’t get to. Back to the general TBR shelves they go! I’ve done individual posts on all of those books, but I haven’t talked about the others: . . MOOMINVALLEY IN NOVEMBER was a bedtime story book for my kids, I think also the last Moomin book I hadn’t read. This is a strangely charming book, with the Moomin family away at see, their house is taken over by Hemulen, Fillyjonk, Toft, Mymble, Snufkin, and Grandpa-Grumble, six wildly different personalities who struggle to coexist without the Moomins. It was lovely. . . SOFT SCIENCE was SO GOOD. It’s central metaphor is that the narrator is a cyborg, so it spends the entire book poking at what it means to be human, especially as a woman. I need to write a full review soon, I am still organizing my thoughts. . . THE MAGICIANS: ALICE’S STORY was an impulse decision at the library. I love the TV show, but haven’t committed to the books because I am 100% here for ELIOT AND MARGO FOREVER and I hear they are less central in the books. This seemed like an easy way to dip my toes in. I wasn’t in love with this, but I did feel like I got to know and understand Alice better, which I suppose was the goal. But listen, if there was an Eliot’s Story, I would buy it in a heartbeat. . . #bookstack #themagicians #alicesstory #levgrossman #lilahsturges #piusbak #marchtrilogy #johnlewis #andrewaydin #natepowell #softscience #frannychoi #magicalnegro #morganparker #seenowthen #jamaicakincaid #thegoodlordbird #jamesmcbride #moominvalleyinnovember #tovejansson #kingsleyhart #ifbealestreetcouldtalk #jamesbaldwin https://www.instagram.com/p/B9PZFY0gqam/?igshid=1lu2amjtds3ki

I envy the stack of @tomesandtextiles books authored by Black authors. I still have a long way to go before I can reach the height of hers. These voices and more tell strong and poignant stories that stick with you long after they're over. They challenge your way of thinking and deserve more recognition. The #publishingpaidme hashtag on Twitter has unearthed a significant disparity between what Black or POC authors have been paid for their books vs. their white counterparts. We need change now. #bookstagram #booksbooksbooks #bibliophile #bookworm #sundaystack #shelfie #bookcommunity #igbooks #igreads #ilovereading #instareads #instagood #readmore #bookishfeatutes #ya #black #authors #weneeddiversebooks #readblackauthors #blacklitchallenge https://www.instagram.com/p/CBJjNYoD6iA/?igshid=18ivaev0vpg22

My last read for #blacklitchallenge! There are so many books I didn’t get to from my stack, but luckily there are still so many more months in the year! . . I went into this book with a lot of feelings. As someone born and raised in Kansas, Brown has always been on my personal list of saints, and that was BEFORE I read and fell in love with the bio John Brown: Abolitionist. Our introduction to Brown in this book is a little... unorthodox, and this book goes on to trouble the legacy of Frederick Douglass as well. But maybe that’s the miracle of this book. It’s a work of fiction so engaging that I was out here frantically researching whether Douglass was a pompous philandering dickhead or not. . . Listen, I would have LOVED an afterword on McBride’s research/process, with some notes on what was grounded in evidence and what was embellishment, but I am also kid of enjoying all the little questions this book left me with that I keep looking up in various places. . . So good. . . #blackstorieshavepower #blackhistorymonth #thegoodlordbird #johnbrown #jamesmcbride #historicalfiction https://www.instagram.com/p/B9HW53IAfip/?igshid=1vmt3o4zfhxq3

Books four, five, and six for #blacklitchallenge! I’ve had the first two books of this trilogy on my shelves for too long without reading them, and without picking up the third. Finally I decided to go grab the third book at the library this weekend and then read all three of them yesterday. What powerful books! Like most Americans, I knew bits and pieces of this story, but certainly not all of it, and not strung together as a personal narrative like this. It is, of course, a massive story that is difficult to find a starting and ending place for, but ending this with the Voting Rights Act is clever and satisfying, especially as the book jumps back and forth from the Civil Rights movement to the inauguration of Barack Obama (and also Lewis’s status as a Congressional Representative.) . . Given the subject matter, these books are difficult to read at times, and there were a few places (particularly in the third book) where I had to put the book down and walk away for a while. But I think all these moments were handled with the right weight — conveying the seriousness of the violence activists faced without lingering too long. . . These are an amazing achievement and I hope they find a permanent place in the graphic novel canon alongside classics like Maus and Persepolis. . . Have you read this? What other graphic non-fiction would you recommend? . . #march #johnlewis #andrewaydin #natepowell #blackstorieshavepower #blackhistorymonth #civilrightsmovement #graphicnovels #americanhistory https://www.instagram.com/p/B8_w_5mAxEP/?igshid=yuvka8tniwsi

Book haul! Once again, I was ONLY supposed to be picking up a pre-order at my local bookstore (for Made in Saturn FINALLY, I don’t know why it took so long, but it’s the next book by Rita Indiana, author of Tentacle, so I was IN), but as long as I was THERE, I decided to check out the used book section. I ended up picking up a copy of Cat’s Cradle — my favorite Vonnegut. I had borrowed my dad’s copy as a teen and somehow never gotten my own. ALSO, I had just gone through @theartisangeek’s book recommendation video tree and ended up with A Blade So Black as my result. So when I found a lovely hardcover in the used section I HAD to buy it, right? Then it turns out the book was autographed and personalized! I wonder what happened to the mysterious girl who had a book signed to her and then sold it for probably $3 or so in store credit? Who knows? But her loss is my gain. . . So, this isn’t entirely a Black lit post, but because A BLADE SO BLACK is the book from the final challenge, I am tagging this #blacklitchallenge anyway. . . I need a readathon to catch up on all the books I want to read this month! . . #bookhaul #schulerbooks #madeinsaturn #ritaindiana #sydneyhutchinson #andotherstories #kurtvonnegut #catscradle #abladesoblack #llmckinney https://www.instagram.com/p/B8zIXWkgaYZ/?igshid=o0uxuwvpq7j3

My third read for #blacklitchallenge is also a good pic for the week 3 photo challenge — a Black literature classic. Maybe there are more obvious classics that come to mind when you think of Baldwin, but that doesn’t mean we should forget about this one. A heartbreaking indictment of racism and the prison/policing/bail system, but also a story of love and hope and family. Now that I have finally read the book I will have to hunt down the movie adaptation that came out not long ago. Has anyone seen it? . . #jamesbaldwin #ifbealestreetcouldtalk #blackhistorymonth #blackstorieshavepower #blackliterature #americanliterature https://www.instagram.com/p/B8wvbBJgzVo/?igshid=tqgs2hxtym1k

My last stack for week two of #blacklitchallenge! These are my most loved Black non-fiction. EXCEPT WHERE IS MY COPY OF OUT OF THE HOUSE OF BONDAGE, I DON’T LOVE ANYONE ENOUGH TO LEND THAT ONE OUT! . . Anyway, notes: BETWEEN THE WORLD AND ME — You’ve heard of this. It is a sort of “racism explained to my son” collection of letter. Deserves all the hype. . . A SMALL PLACE — Listen, just because Kincaid only got one spot on the fiction list, it doesn’t mean she doesn’t deserve to be here, too. I want to place this one in the hands of every comfortable white person who ever goes on a Caribbean cruise. . . THE LIFE AND TIMES OF FREDERICK DOUGLASS — The longest of Douglass’s books, I believe this one covers the most of his post-slavery life. His life is of course fascinating, but the extra angle of how social change happens — the meetings and the appearances and the articles and the organizing, coupled with the way Douglass keeps insisting that posterity will forget him! — is what puts this one on my favorites stack. . . I KNOW WHY THE CAGED BIRD SINGS — Surely one of the most famous memoirs of all times? Remarkable, painful, all the things! You may have heard a lot about this book, but unless you’ve read it, you have no idea. . . FEMINISM IS FOR EVERYBODY — My introduction to the remarkable bell hooks! And still my favorite, though I need to read more! It’s what, 20 years old? And I think would have some changes of written today, but I would still recommend it to anyone wanting to do serious thinking about feminism. . . HIDDEN FIGURES — You know how they say the book is better than the movie? Well, I LOVED the movie (aside from some unnecessary white savior nonsense), but the book is so much better. More women, more about each of the three main women from the movie, more context, more everything. Such a remarkable book! . . #blackstoriesmatter #blackhistorymonth #blackhistory #bookstack #betweentheworldandme #tanehisicoates #asmallplace #jamaicakincaid #thelifeandtimesoffrederickdouglass #frederickdouglass #iknowwhythecagedbirdsings #mayaangelou #feminismisforeverybody #bellhooks #hiddenfigures #margotleeshetterly https://www.instagram.com/p/B8mUzPDAbZ_/?igshid=7s8qsfm77bmf

THE IMMORTAL LIFE OF HENRIETTA LACKS — Of course I had heard of this, and even owned it, but it was my teenage son who forced me to read it. A riveting account of such a complicated story — Skloot covers so many angles from the medicine and science to the very personal lives of Lacks’s family and their community. . . THE LIFE AND TIMES OF FREDERICK DOUGLASS — The longest of Douglass’s books, I believe this one covers the most of his post-slavery life. Okay, so Stack 4 for this week’s #blacklitchallenge is a tiny bit of a cheat. I wanted to go with World Black literature, but two of these faves are Algerian authors, who are more Arabic than Black? But African. Anyway, these are African. . .
