asdjfkl; OKAY so earlier tonight i was reminded of this oc i have named henry blackwell. henry is a hotshot private detective from a wip i've been referring to as Blackwell & Linwood, though i'm thinking i might change the title now that i'm revamping it.

i've recycled some characters from it (like the rat king) for some other wips because i reached a point where i was like "no this is going to be something else now" but. no i wanna bring this back actually. i can cut some of the original cast and streamline it a bit but i love this concept actually

the basic plot kicks off with henry trying to solve a series of disappearances and bring the missing people home, but on the way he learns that there's more to these disappearances than meets the eye... there might just be something a little supernatural going on. which pisses henry off SO much because he hates the supernatural SO MUCH ASDFJKL;

i'm still figuring out how i'm going to revamp it but i will explain the basic main cast:

Henry Blackwell (he/him) - a smart-talking private detective who thinks he's hot shit and enjoys undermining authority (especially the police). He comes off as an asshole and kinda leans into that perception a bit, but he's actually a really sweet guy once you get to know him and genuinely cares about helping people. Comes from a very wealthy family but is estranged from his parents, who disapprove of pretty much everything about him. Class traitor (affectionate).

Addison Linwood (they/he) - a snarky witch with a lot of baggage who's incredibly casual about their magic, to the point where a lot of other witches don't respect them. Generally rude and crude but has a good heart deep down and also genuinely wants to help people. Enjoys teasing Henry about his lack of experience with the supernatural. Their familiar is a fat little dog named Biscuit who has no magical properties but LOVES being cuddled.

Piers / Roger (he/it) (settling on a new name for him asdfjkl) - a smooth-talking vampire who considers Addison his favorite human in the whole world. He loves seeing chaos unfold and finds their approach to their magic endlessly entertaining, especially when they do incredibly dangerous and sometimes unethical spells just to see if they can. Doesn't have a lot of respect for Henry at first but eventually comes to accept him as part of the group.

Hunter D'Angelo (she/they) - the host of a local radio show that mainly just covers local news, though occasionally she branches out into other topics. Kind of an asshole and very blunt and to the point, and also she's a little possessed by a demon, but like. A chill one. She gets along with it pretty well. She and Addison are besties/kinda friends with benefits and sometimes they do magic together. She takes no shit and is kind of mean, but she's also really sweet once you get to know her.

there's other characters (like henry's siblings etc etc) but i'll just share those four for now <3

Well. Okay. We're gonna be here a while- okay I won't count the WIPs that are bare concepts/just lists of characters so far, to make this easier on myself.

A Modern Ghost Story - A group of semi-famous ghost hunters meets a group of semi-infamous immortals, and the two clash and bicker as they try to find a way to help a family deal with their ghost problem.

Bleeding Over Eden - Local man has so, so many problems, and he's going to put off addressing them for as long as possible and instead try to help everyone else with their problems. Also his ex, who was supposed to be dead, is back in his life now.

For We Are Both Fragile Things - Two gay guys, one trans and one cis, meet in college and fall in love, but everyone else realizes they're dating long before they do. It's a cute, classic slowburn! Except oh no things are TOXIC!!!!!! Also supernatural bullshit is happening but don't worry about that.

The Ruins of Memory - Fantasy sapphics, or: local woman is stressed and sad and has no memories, so she and her girlfriend are helping everyone else with their problems while trying to find the truth of who she is.

God Died With Wooden Bones - Local radio intern wants to stop his boss from summoning the old gods, and he's kind of upset about it, but really he probably shouldn't be doing that while he's at work so who's the real bad guy here.

Blackwell & Linwood - Mean spitfire of a private detective gets drawn into a supernatural adventure against his will, and by god if he isn't going to spend the whole time bitching about it.

CUDAAS - A group of angels and demons (well, not really, but they're at least the equivalents of that) become friends, several of them fall in love, and on the way they realize the power of working together and unionize. Also they kill a god or two.

Rook - A murder victim wakes up after their murder and decides to go on the hunt for their murderer, with the help of an amateur psychic.

I feel like I'm missing one. But this is a lot so that's all I'll do for now.

What books have shaped the way you think about writing the most? Why?

Okay here me out. Warrior cats. Warrior cats is the reason I started writing, and it's had the biggest impact on me as a writer.

I recognize that the writing in Warriors fucking sucks at the worst of times, and at the best of times it's.... decent. However, it was the first book series that got me super super invested, and it had a huge influence on me b/c I'm forever attached to animal fantasy and it influenced my writing in ways I don't fully know how to explain!

Also it kinda.... in a weird way, as I've gotten older.... has given me pretty strong opinions about What Not To Do. Namely, holy shit did Warriors teach me the importance of keeping track of your characters from the beginning of the story oh my GOD. Like I'm not perfect but OH MY GOD.

Other series that have definitely influenced me are Tales From the Gas Station (obviously lmao), the Fablehaven series, The Da Vinci Code and related books, Penpal by Dathan Auerbach, aaaand I don't remember a lot of their names but all the horror books I used to fucking devour and scare the shit out of myself with.

Describe your writing style.

Wow, those sure are sentences sometimes!

Jokes aside, I'd describe my style as, like... I like close POVs, but not close enough for first-person (I hate writing in first-person), I enjoy playing around with grammar and I try to have variety in my sentence length but I find myself tending towards long-ass sentences, aaaaand I like to try to be funny. I find sarcastic narration a delight to read.

How much of your own self/experiences do you believe pours into your projects? If this differs per project, which projects have the most and least of you?

This definitely differs per project, but I tend to put a lot of myself in my characters and storylines because for me, much of the time, fiction is how I process shit. I love to explore grand ideas, but sometimes you gotta just make a sad little guy and either give them the life you want or the life you've had and hope things get better.

I think the project that this is most apparent in, though, is one that I've kinda put to the wayside for many years now because it's SO personal that I actually don't really enjoy working on it usually. But that story deals a lot with some personal trauma, as well as in general is based on my complicated relationship with my gender and being an older sibling.

(And without going into it too much b/c I don't want to share too much personal trauma stuff publicly, the main idea of that story is an idea that I find myself really drawn to in fiction, which is the struggle of being an older sibling who couldn't protect their younger sibling.)

I think the story that has the least me in it would be CUDAAS, but even then it carries a lot of my perspectives on the world, people in power, and what makes someone truly human.

And also yeah the latest kinda-not-really WIP idea that crawled into my brain last night is also, if I go through with it, probably gonna be based pretty heavily on some shit I've been coming to terms with recently.

For L.... one OC I have whose name starts with L is my girl Leon Blackguard!

Leon is a character in Magic Apocalyptica, my funky post-apocalyptic fantasy world! She doesn't have much of a story on her own yet, but I bring her up a lot when I talk about worldbuilding because she is a super unique case of what is technically innate magic in this world.

Essentially, Leon made a deal with a fiend (essentially a demon) to gain magic, but she voided the deal after a few years. How'd she do it? She killed the fiend, but she did so in a way that transferred the deal to herself, essentially making her the source of her own magic. She's not the only person who's ever done this, but this is a super difficult thing to accomplish and it speaks a lot to Leon's natural strength and determination.

I like to call Leon my "magic apocalypse girlboss" because. Well, yeah-

Final Leon fact is that she is a lesbian and has a super sweet girlfriend whom she dotes on <3

For J.... I present to you my boy Jackson Park!

Jackson is... a bit of a complicated guy, and I've played around with him a lot over the years. As of now, he's featured as a minor character in Blackwell & Linwood, my still-needs-a-new-title supernatural detective story. Jackson is Addison (the witch)'s ex-boyfriend, though he's a regular human with no interest in the supernatural.

I've featured Jackson in some other stories before, and I've gone back and forth on his personality, but deep down he really does mean well. He's a little toxic but that's just because he's got a lot of unresolved issues he's working through. Boy, talk to a therapist!!!

He's still kinda friends with Addison, but they don't get along as well as they used to.

but YES my darling addison... addison is actually one of my oldest ocs that i still use today!!! i created them in like.... 2016... wrow.....

anyway addison wasn't originally made for any wip specifically, but then one day i had a brain blast and decided to make a specific wip for them.

so uhhh addison! yes! i need to brush up a little on my research but one thing that i think is kinda neat with addison is that they are... incredibly casual about their witchcraft. what exactly do i mean by that? WELL!!!

essentially they just. they don't take it super seriously. a lot of the other witches they know are really uptight and insist everything has to be done Very Properly, meanwhile addison's like "fuck it lol if it works it works lol this isn't rocket science."

also addison very much does unethical and dangerous magic just for fun and to see if they can do it. their honestly really blase approach to magic might come off as laziness, but really it's a matter of the fact that addison is just. so fucking confident in their own abilities that they know they can do it without following the rules exactly.

plus, addison's more casual approach to magic actually gives them a lot of freedom in how they use it--unlike other witches they know, for example, addison can actually use magic in combat if they have enough prep time. it also has,,, some downsides, unfortunately,,,,,,,, addison's magic use has an effect on them that they're not completely aware of yet at the time of the story :3c

maybe at some point i'll explain more how magic n' such works for this 'verse but sadjfkl; yeah <3

Henry would absolutely never go skydiving or anything along those lines. He's scared of heights.

Oh there's a lot of things he wants to try, many of them sexual. But one thing he definitely wants to try is scuba diving.

He absolutely can't believe people will do parkour n' shit on high buildings. Again, he's scared of heights.

4. What is the most embarrassing thing they’ve done?

One time in college he got really drunk and locked himself out of his apartment on accident and ended up curled up on the ground outside sleeping like a sad little kitty. His roommate took pictures.

5. Have they done anything they thought they’d never do?

Well he certainly never thought he'd try weed. Now that's one of the tamer things he does.
