Soooooo much needed growth on our ackee trees. My mouth is already watering at the thought of curried ackee steamed buns 🤤 Did you guys know that ackee is one of the many fruits that the caribbean is known for yet didn’t originate from this part of the world? The first ackee tree in Jamaica was grown from a seed brought on-shore from West Africa by a captain of a slave ship in 1778. Similar story with the breadfruit and mangoes. Just some food for thought 💭 ・・・ #growninhaiti #Ackee #akee #blighiasapida #haiti #ayiti #seedsovereignty #foodsecurity #reforestation #diversity #growth #agroforestry #plantatree #foodforest #plantedfromseed #organic #nogmos #nopesticides #noherbicides https://www.instagram.com/p/CGpa7_rFYSj/?igshid=vm3rtlthdhz5

Akee season is once again upon us! Hard to believe that people here are so afraid of the toxicity that they don’t even bother with them lol. Just means more for me. The Akee is native to West Africa and probably brought to Jamaica in the seventeenth century with slave ships sailing from West Africa to the Caribbean. WARNING: The akee must be treated with care. Only ripe fruits that have split open are harvested, and only the ivory-colored arial surrounding the seed is actually eaten. Unripe or overripe fruits and the seeds are always poisonous, and consumption can cause severe sickness and eventually lead to death through hypoglycemia (Jamaican vomiting sickness). Harvested correctly and prepared properly, the akee is a nutritious vegetable rich in essential fatty acids, vitamin A, and protein. It is a major ingredient in West African and Jamaica cuisine. The national dish of Jamaica is Akee with salt fish, a dish prepared with salted codfish and boiled akee arils sautéed with plantain, tomato, onion, bell pepper, and spices. The akee is actually closely related to rambutan and to the longan and although the fruit is native to Africa, it is the national tree of Jamaica. An akee tree with ripe fruits are also beneficial to a great number of frugivorous birds. ・・・ #growninhaiti #akee #ackee #blighiasapida #fruit #poisonous #toxic #edible #warning #jamaica #haiti #ayiti #westafrica #reforestation #season #fruit #tropicalfruit #agroforestry #abundance #growth #treeripened #foodsecurity https://www.instagram.com/p/B84ZUMelkf5/?igshid=1nh0th7vm40zp
