🌸: My entry for the @briarvalleyarchives “New Beginnings” spring event

🌸: During this spring season, with new beginnings blooming left and right, Leona learns about and enters the wonderful world of cosplay with his gn!reader S/O who is a cosplayer

🌸 The first time Leona saw you in cosplay, he did a double take. He’s not one to be surprised easily, but for a second, he thought that a whole new and random person broke into Ramshackle (that’s how good your cosplays are ;)).

🌸 He’s not into animes, Webtoons/webcomics, books, or any fandoms really. The only “fandoms” Leona’s even remotely a part of are those of Pro Magift teams, so he’s not familiar with cosplay. You have to explain to him all the cosplay terms, like “cosplan” (your future cosplay plans/projects), “costest” (testing out a cosplay), or even “con-crunching” (putting together your cosplay near the date of/or even the night before the convention).

🌸 Leona’s also not one to care about clothes much in general, but he knows the time and dedication you put into your cosplays…from the hours you spend putting together your cosplay to angling your phone camera just right when you film your cosplay videos.

🌸 If you’re trying to film a video in cosplay for TwstTok or Magicam either in your room in Ramshackle or Leona’s room in Savanaclaw (Leona’s room has better lighting tbh), Leona’s just laying on the bed on his stomach with his cheek resting in his palm as he gazes at you the entire time with a smirk.

🌸 He kept showering you with a ton of one-worded compliments such as “Breathtaking,” and positively relished seeing you break character while filming as a flustered expression creeped up onto your face at his compliments.

🌸 “Leona, can you please go outside for a few minutes?” you mumbled, your cheeks warming.

🌸 “I don’t wanna miss a second of your creative process,” Leona winked, to which you responded with a loving eye roll. He’s so down bad for you. Whenever you post your cosplay videos, he watches all your videos, likes them, and saves them on his private, never-active TwstTok account.

🌸 When you feel more comfortable with filming cosplay videos or doing self-photoshoots in cosplay around Leona, he becomes your cosplay partner-in-crime.

🌸 For example, fixing cosplay wigs are a pain and for a while, you didn’t have a wig mannequin (they’re expensive and Sage Island isn’t the best place geographically to receive online packages via shipping). Thus, you had the brilliant idea of using Leona as your wig model (even though his head shape and your head shape are completely different). He found cosplay wigs weird at first, until you asked him to try on one of your long and fluffy wigs, and the soft material of the wig made him fall in love with cosplay wigs right then and there.

🌸 “Just gimme a few minutes, herbivore,” Leona patted your cosplay wig on his head and laid down on his bed, out like a light and sleeping with his hands folded together on his stomach like a storybook princess. The flowy and wavy strands of your long wig fanned out around his shoulders and arms, and for a second, Leona really did look like one of those storybook princess cursed into eternal slumber. You couldn’t help but laugh, leaning down to kiss him on the forehead.

🌸 Cheka, on the other hand, likes to use your cosplay wigs as disguises of sorts whenever the cub plays hide-and-seek with Leona.

🌸 Your and Cheka’s giggles filled Leona’s room as Leona turned around from facing the stone wall after counting to ten with one hand over his eyes. “Sigh…ready or not, here I come,” Leona indulged his five-year-old nephew in a game of hide-and-seek.

🌸 It didn’t take long for Leona to spot Cheka crouching down next to his bedside table. The cub took one of your long cosplay wigs earlier and wore it; the wig comically and practically covered the cub from head-to-toe. You tried your best to stifle your laughter as you sat on the right side of Leona’s bed, sewing a button onto your cosplay.

🌸 “Gee, I wonder where the furball could be,” sarcasm oozed from Leona’s voice as he sauntered over to his study desk just a few feet away from his bed. “Is he over…here?” Leona clicked his tongue and made a show of ducking under the desk to check.

🌸 Cheka’s adorable laughter grew in volume, to which Leona turned towards you. Leona winked at you, lifting a finger to his lips, before walking over to you. “I just can’t seem to find my beloved nephew anywhere,” Leona sighed. He perched at the edge of his bed, making sure he didn’t sit on your cosplay. “Where could he be? Got any ideas, herbivore?”

🌸 “Beats me,” you hummed, looping thread through the button’s hole. You and Leona were planning to attend a spring anime convention in Sage Island the next day (your first anime convention in Twisted Wonderland and with Leona), so you were officially “con-crunching.”

🌸 “Hm…” Leona rose from the bed and made his way over to Cheka. “What’s this? A furball?” Leona leaned down and scooped Cheka up in his arms.

🌸 “Oji-tan, you found me!” Cheka squealed, your wig almost falling off the cub as Cheka moved the strands of your wig away from his tiny face to look at Leona.

🌸 “Uh-huh, now it’s time for your nap,” Leona gently took your wig off of Cheka’s head. As if on cue, the cub let out a cute yawn and closed his eyes. After tucking Cheka in on the left side of his bed where your cosplay materials were well out of Cheka’s reach, Leona went over to you and gave you back your cosplay wig.

🌸 “We should do a family cosplay with Cheka someday,” you shot a soft smile at Leona. Leona went over to his study desk and plopped down onto the wooden chair in front of it. He sat backwards so that he faced you.

🌸 “Yeah,” Leona hummed, watching you secure the button in place on your cosplay. For the rest of that spring afternoon, you continued to work on your cosplay while Leona helped by handing you more thread, scissors, glue, etc. as Cheka napped.

🌸 The next day, you and Leona attended the “con” (short for “convention”). The two of you were decked out in a couple cosplay (you as a plumber and Leona as a princess from a popular video game). Even though it was barely noon, Leona was already annoyed by the con attendees who pushed past him or almost stepped on his toes in their cosplay heels and boots. He was intrigued, however, by some cosplayers’ extravagant props, and he appreciated their craftsmanship.

🌸 Leona’s usually not one to strike up conversations with strangers, but when you complimented fellow cosplayers’ outfits and props, Leona also chimed in with questions on how they made their props (and that just led to the cosplayers’ enthusiastic and lengthy answers about the materials they used and Leona listened with interest the entire time).

🌸 Leona found the Artist Alley and merch booths to be too crowded, and nothing really piqued his interest. Leona bought some prints and keychains of your favorite anime characters and fandoms for you. Artists gave you and Leona a lot of mini freebies like stickers and gushed over “how cute” you and Leona looked together in your couple cosplay (which Leona would respond with a grin and, “You got that right”).

🌸 Leona also couldn’t help but quirk a proud grin when a little kid with cosplayer parents ran up to you and asked you for a picture because you and Leona “looked so cool.” You noticed that Leona posed in-character for the picture with you and the kid, which made you love Leona all the more.

🌸 Leona took a ton of pictures for you at the con, both cool and professional-looking photos of you in cosplay (you taught him how to take better pictures lol) and off-guard derpy photos of you in cosplay when the two of you rested a bit in a tiny corner (Leona grumped about the lack of resting/sitting areas in the venue) after traveling around the convention venue for hours.

🌸 Even though this was his first con, Leona came to the con prepared (“Be prepared” is his motto, after all). Leona had a bag on his shoulder the entire time with your sneakers in it because he knew those uncomfortable shoes you wore with your cosplay would hurt your feet (for Leona, underneath his cosplay, he wore his everyday sneakers). After you changed into your sneakers and the two of you took a water break, the two of you traveled around the con some more.

🌸 The two of you even ran into Idia and Ortho, the former carrying multiple bags of merch (fan art, official merch, body pillows, what have you). You and Leona didn’t chat with the Shroud brothers long, since Idia scurried away to catch a panel hosted by his favorite anime voice actor and Ortho flew after him.

🌸 You and Leona returned to the Artist Alley near closing time, where there were thankfully less people. At a booth that sold more general trinkets than fandom-specific ones, Leona picked up some stuff like a donut keychain for Ruggie and a succulent keychain for Jack, and some other keychains or charms for other members of his dorm. You smiled to yourself; Leona always thought about others even if he wasn’t the best at showing it outright.

🌸 The last booth you and Leona went up to was a booth selling inexpensive rings (both fandom-specific and general rings). You noticed a pair of matching rings with a slim gold band. The rings’ gems were transparent water-drop ovals with teeny dried-up blush, marigold, emerald, and ivory flower petals inside.

🌸 “Leona, what do you think about getting matching rings?” The ring would pair perfectly with your spring outfits, and the dried-up flower petals in the rings’ gems reminded you of one of your and Leona’s favorite places: NRC’s Botanical Garden.

🌸 “Not too shabby,” Leona grinned as he leaned down to look at the rings with you. “Plannin’ on proposing to me already, huh, herbivore?” Leona then made a show of looking at his left hand, which made you laugh. He liked the rings too, and didn’t care that they weren’t made of real gold.

🌸 “Wouldn’t be the first time someone’s proposed to their partner at a con,” The seller, a fae cosplaying a popular blonde spy character from an anime about spies and families, chuckled as they rang up your order.

🌸 Leona thought about the seller’s words as the two of you left the Artist Alley and ultimately the con after you bought the rings. As the two of you made your way through the venue to the exit, Leona thought about how he couldn’t imagine proposing to you or you proposing to him in front of hundreds of people at a con.

🌸 Leona knew himself well, and he knew two things at the moment: 1. He values his privacy and 2. If he was ever going to propose to you, which he planned to do so in the far, far future, it would be a private, intimate, and special moment for just the two of you.

🌸 Leona’s head then filled with thoughts of his proposal to you in the far, far future. He wondered what the two of you would wear during the proposal, whether it would be fancy clothes, pajamas, or even a couple cosplay. The quiet yet gushy smile on his face was apparent as he thought about all this.

🌸 “What’re you smiling about?” You smiled at Leona before unleashing a yawn. After a whole day at the con, you were ready for dinner and rest.

🌸 “Nothin’,” Leona replied with sly nonchalance. “Just that I like the rings you picked out for us.” He held out his right hand, where he wore his new ring on his right pinky.

🌸 You held out your left hand with your new ring on your left pinky before intertwining your left fingers with Leona’s right fingers. “I like them too.” The gems on your and Leona’s rings cast tiny rays of multi-colored light from the dried petals in front of the two of you as the sun began to set and its golden rays made their way through the glass building of the convention venue.

🌸 Hand in hand, you and Leona left your first (and definitely not last) con together.

Not limited to just manga; as long as we're talking GL (or, at the very least, comics about lesbians), manhua, webcomics & other non-japanese comics are fine!

Oneshots, anthologies & ongoing works are all equally A-OK.

While I ask that you don't submit straight up hentai, any amount of sexual content in a work is alright (just give a heads up 👍).

Titles that explore or touch on dark subject matter are fine (encouraged. even.), again just give a heads up.

SUBMISSIONS NAYS:

While there's no strict page minimum, future polls won't include very short works; I'll still shout them out if they're submitted, but I feel they don't make for very fun competition.

Submit as many titles as you like, but number of submissions has little to no impact on acceptance, so no need to spam the same one.

Anything romanticising or sexualising incest/rape/grooming/etc will not be accepted; its a blurry line between that and having dark themes, of course, so acceptance and rejection are up to my discretion.

CONTENT WARNINGS:

Polls give a general heads up of any notable warnings for the series in the post, but once they're out of the tournament, they get a more detailed recommendation post that's more specific and comprehensive.

Upcoming Dramas in August 2023 that are a must watch!

It is never too early to get your calenders decorated with what will really keep you busy in the upcoming month and honestly, I am a huge procrastinator in almost every other subject except one... can you guess it? Yep, it's kdramas. I need to get that mental preparation running so I can be thrilled, haunted, humoured and of course, romanticised to the point of desperation. And if you are like me, then I can guarantee: August is going to be your month!

The First Responders 2

Starting with this sensational thriller that took us by storm with its first season, The First Responders is finally back with its sequel. We are finally going to be off that cliffhanger that made us lose our minds. As a fan of crime thrillers and *ahm-ahm* drool-able people in uniforms, can you imagine the sequences with firefighters and cops at play, together?! I am excited to see how their combined efforts will continue on the restless path of justice. Well, if somebody looks for me in August, you all have a clue now for where I would be.

This season will follow on the tracks of its prequel and air on Disney+ for all audiences and will take over the slot occupied previously by SBS' Revenant on Fridays and Saturdays.

Moving

Moving is a webtoon adaptation from Writer Kang Pool's webcomic. The story captures three high schoolers, who have superpowers that they want to hide from people. They, however, have inherited these powers from their parents who struggle to protect them from letting their powers be misused.

I'm not too empathetic about the latest inclination of kdramas towards webtoon adaptations but as an avid viewer, I cannot deny the crazy amount of interesting tales that have come to life from toons, all of which are a sight for sore eyes. But Moving really grabbed my attention from the distinct plot. I am expecting a lot of parent-child dynamic and a lot of (hopefully credible) action scenes.

Moving will be airing on Disney+ for all audiences.

My Dearest

Yet another period drama that will tug at your heartstrings. Set in the Joseon era during the Qing invasion, there is a great suffering of people from all works of life. In an unforeseen storytelling, love blooms in the ruckus between a man of complex character and dark secrets and an almost-too-confident noble lady. Will their journey be a smooth sailing or will it be overturned by storms? We'll have to see.

With the serene covers and the bright, picturesque snippets, I do feel a very strange conviction that we'll be dragged through the darkest angst in this series. I am praying that they won't pull a Scarlet Heart Ryeo with this one *cries in sad endings*.

My Dearest will be airing on the slot previously occupied by MBC's Numbers on Fridays and Saturdays.

The Killing Vote

Do the loosely tied law bindings sometimes call for extreme measures by the anonymous greater masses? Such happens in The Killing Vote when all citizens over 18 years old begin to get a polling message that makes them choose whether a person should receive the death penalty or not. If the majority votes in favour of the death penalty, the offender is then taken out by an anonymous masked persona. This stirs up the authorities and hence begins a blind pursue of a murderer in the facade of a lawless justice lender and the real national safeguards.

And we are at my favourite genre! This one is based on a webcomic too written by Eom Se-yoon. Ah, the way I am already jittery awaiting this drama. I feel like this has the potential to be one of the biggest dramas of 2023 or it could be a massive disappointment and a mess of plot holes. Either way, strap up your seat belts because this will be a ride for sure!

The Killing Vote will occupy the airing time of SBS Thursday's 21:00.

My Lovely Boxer

A story of a coerced bonding between a professionally ruthless Sports Agent and a lost boxer, who was previously undefeated in all her matches. Sports agent, Kim Tae-young begrudgingly takes the duty of bringing back the lost boxer, Lee Kwon-sook. Will he, whose strongest suit is extracting the most from his players, succeed in convincing someone who has no intention to return?

A sports drama with what I expect to be a painful back drops awaits us in My Lovely Boxer. I am definitely looking forward to seeing the developments that the two visibly hard headed characters will have. The action will be added bonus!

My Lovely Boxer will take over the slot previously occupied by Heartbeat on Mondays and Tuesdays.

The American Chestnut was a large species of tree in the beech family, native to the eastern forests of North America. They bloomed long strings of catkins each summer, and dropped their leaves each fall- along with a hefty mast crop of burr-guarded nuts. Their flavor was sweeter and milder than other types of chestnut, and each year, they helped feed entire ecosystems beneath the branches.

The trees themselves were especially prolific, making up to roughly 30% of a forests' tree population throughout their range. In favorable conditions, the chestnut could reach over 100 feet tall, with trunks almost 10 feet in diameter. Some specimins could have contended among the tallest individual trees in the world.

The american chestnut was not alone, either- within its teperate family range, there exist 7 other species, though C. dentata was the largest. It was a tree of many uses.

Even aside from the sheer bulk of food value produced, the wood of the american chestnut was especially valuble. High tannin content in young trees especially accounted for a superior rot resistance and overall durability in certain types of construction.

Its leaves were also a reliable source of natural tannins for the leather industry, before the creation of synthetic tannins in the 1950s. The leaves of the american chestnut are also responsible for the latin name of the species- seemingly ironically, given the sharp thorns of the chestnut's protective burr. DENTATA refers to the elongated teeth on the leaf edges, which are more pronounced than in other chestnut species.

Given the propensity for their incredible nut production, one may find it odd to note that the chestnut tree rarely propagated itself from seed. Sprouts emerging from the base of older trees and stumps were vigorous growers, shooting up to fill the canopy gaps left behind by their ailing predecessors. Some nuts still sprouted- forgotten by the diverse selection of wildlife that consumed them- but their early growth was slower, and made up but a small percentage of young trees.

But still the crop was massive. Each mature tree  could produce over 6000 nuts per season, with an average lifespan of 150 years. Some individuals were recorded to be older- much older- clocking in at 400 years of age, and still producing nuts.

Lords of the ecosystem each in their own right- for those who lived in the eden beneath the canopy, this keystone species didn’t just add to the environment… it was the environment.

Summertime rolled in with an expanse of flowers, packed so densely in the canopy that  the sight from above was like an alabaster ocean. Catkins and pollen and leaves, dancing together in the sunbaked wind for miles and miles and miles…

Sights like these would be a rare one today- rare enough to be impossible - for the downfall of the American chestnut is a terrible irony. What a cruel joke it was that a wood known for rot resistance came to kneel down before the onslaught of a fungal blight.

Or rather: there was two in the span of a century. Ink Disease was the first, introduced from Europe in the early 19th century and afflicting the roots of hundreds of flora species across the continent. The nail in the chestnut coffin was the 2nd wave- another fungus known as Chestnut Blight, primarily affecting the trunks and stems of trees.

Cryphonectria parasitica is a sac fungi native to East & Southeast Asia, which coevolved with the Chinese and Japanese chestnut species. Much like the ink disease introduced from imported plant materials a century before, the blight was shipped in to North America on the barks of other chestnuts. Like father, like son: The first Japanese Chestnut arrived in 1876, commissioned by Samuel Browne Parsons Jr- son of the first man to import Japanese maples to north america.

Chinese chestnuts followed soon after, and starts of each were sold in a booming nursery industry that sent the trees by mail order all up and down the eastern forests. While any one of these numerous imports could have first brought the fungus, the collectors desire for these ‘exotic’ trees displayed a status, and that obsession spread the spores far and wide.

By the time the blight finally begun to bloom in 1904, the onset was so rapid, researchers believe that the fungus had already been deeply entrenched in the countryside for some time.

Truly, it was like a wildfire- its embers first spotted in the Bronx Zoo of New York, raging southward and overtaking the chestnut population in only a handful of decades. The only force faster was the lumber industry. Faced with such a devastating loss of capital value, efforts were made to save the valuable wood and uncountable stands of the american chestnut were felled before the fungus even touched them. Meanwhile, the survivors continued on...

Once entrenched, c. parasitica spends its life within the cambium layer of a tree, feeding on the active living cells and producing oxalic acid as a byproduct. The american chestnut is unable to metabolize this acid, and its buildup in their living tissues eventually kills the tree.

Or, at least, the fungus kills the part of the tree that remains above ground… but the chestnut, ever adapted to the true wildfire conditions of a terraformed North American forest, sprouts new shoots in perpetuity. This is not enough to shake off the blight entirely- as the fungus survives happily on dead wood and other trees as well- but a vast majority of living chestnut trees remain in a sort of limbo.

These once-giants exist as tiny growing shoots, surviving, not quite to breeding age… but among these survivors, a scant few individuals stand out from the rest. If they can overcome the blight just long enough to produce nuts, it indicates a genetic shift towards blight resistance. Ever so slightly, these trees are the key to the species future.

To unlock their potential, a chestnut sapling needs only 8 years before it goes to seed… and while the blight is here to stay, there are ways to delay the inevitable. Certain strains of Cryphonectria parasitica have been found with their own blight- a viral contagion- that slows the fungus down enough that the tree can survive infection.

Unfortunately, this virus is not so prolific as the blight was in the wild. To be an effective treatment for the blight, a chestnut must have each individual canker examined and the virus reapplied, year after year. It’s expensive in labor, and time.

But it IS possible.

Different people working together across the continent are already making headway on the chestnut’s revival, utilizing these methods and others. The forests of old may be changed forever: coextinction is irreversible, and habitat loss has fragmented the range these trees once grew.

This much is all true- but with some luck and a bit of support, there is still hope for this magnificent tree and the ecosystem it has sheltered. Better practices, better priorities, better care are on the horizon. People just have to know where to look for it.

Among these, the explosive growth and change within the Yuri genre are among the most precious and most outstanding achievements. This second century of Yuri opened with a bang, as phenomenal new works, creators, and moments made their mark and helped change the future genre.

This annual list is a celebration of just a handful of the fantastic titles, people, and events in Yuri. There are likely some even greater ones that did not make the list because there is so much content in both English and Japanese that even I cannot keep up. However, among the troves of treasure, these titles stood out as shining examples of Yuri excellence. Some were released this year, others were recently adapted into English, and still, others are established titles that rose to prominence to dominate the conversation and my mind this year, but every one of them is worthy of being on this list and in your heart.

15: The Curse of Kudan Remastered

Japanese Yuri visual novel developers show no sign of slowing down as they continue to push to new heights and try new ideas. These are the same amazing people who brought us the delightful educational Yuri game The Expression Amrilato and the hilarious and surprisingly queer OshiRabu: Waifus Over Husbando’s. However, this most recent release, The Curse of Kudan Remastered, is their best work yet. Released near Halloween, this game brings a new edge of dark mystery and the occult to Yuri audiences worldwide.

14: Adachi and Shimamura

English audiences were finally treated this year to Hitoma Iruma’s long-running and wildly successful Yuri light novel series, Adachi and Shimamura. Although the story struggles to gain traction, dedicated readers’ have their patience rewarded with a sweet tale full of gay pining. Alternatively, you can jump into its stellar anime adaptation, with gorgeous visuals and realized characters you will actually be willing to put up with the annoying Yashiro just to see where the title characters go. The series shows no sign of slowing down either, as the manga adaptation is coming to Western audiences next year.

Honorable Mention: Happy Go Lucky Days

The OVA adaptation of Fragtime got most of the attention this year. Still, director Takuya Satou and Pony Canyon also gave us this much-overlooked “love is love” anthology movie based on Takako Shimura’s manga (Sweet Blue Flowers, Wandering Son). The first short in the film, “Happy,” is easily the best Yuri anime of the year. It follows the beautiful yet realistic queer love story of two women hooking up at a mutual ex-girlfriend’s wedding, only for the relationship to blossom and warm viewers’ hearts. Sadly, while stylized, the budget demanded the animation cut a few too many corners. Additionally, the subsequent stories are at best tedious and at worst alarmingly problematic, which is why Happy Go Lucky Days only gets an honorable mention.

13: Mieri Hiranishi

The Yuri scene has many colorful creators with a breadth of different ideas and stories in the genre, yet few have provided as much humor and joy as Mieri. This talented creator spectacularly tumbled into the scene with her manga essay The Moment I Realized I Wasn’t Straight, which embodies the brutal honesty and realism of Nagata Kabi and matches it with exaggerated hilarity. She continues to chronicle her painful struggles of being a butch girl in love with butch girls in the monthly series The Girl that Can’t Get a Girlfriend. Alternatively, you can follow her on Twitter for just as much heart and laughter.

12: My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom!

My Next Life as a Villainess has what can only be described as volcanic bisexual energy. Every character protagonist Catarina Claes encounters is entirely enthralled by her. Of course, she is far too preoccupied with her quest to avoid doom flags and change her ultimate fate to notice any romantic interest. The series is rewarding and well structured, as views are just as focused on how Catarina plans to avoid certain doom as they are with the various romantic misses her band of companions cooks up. While the “friendship ending” did not capitalize on its Yuri potential, it was perhaps the most satisfying possibility for this crazy harem, at least until season two comes out, which looks, unfortunately, to be significantly less queer.

11: Love Me for Who I Am

Kata Konayama’s manga series is less Yuri than a general LGBT work, but it has a lesbian character and explores her identity and struggles in great detail. Few titles before have captured the exciting and nervous waves of emotions that young people feel as they explore gender and sexual identities and try to find themselves. This heartfelt and extremely queer series rubberbands between cute moe dress up to tragic and gripping backstory, keeping readers on their toes the whole time.

10: A Summer’s End – Hong Kong 1986

Oracle and Bone’s debut visual novel, A Summer’s End, is set in a vibrant and electric 1980’s Hong Kong. Drawing inspiration from classic Asian cinema, music, and fashion. The worlds of Michelle, a young office worker, and a free-spirited woman named Same collide. The two struggle to comprehend and accept each other’s feelings just as they struggle against society’s expectations and prejudices. An incredibly thoughtful and touching adventure, the creators incorporated vital contemporary elements include Asian LGBTQ rights and growing political unrest in Hong Kong, into this illustrious game.

Honorable Mention: Goodbye, My Rose Garden

In the same vein as A Summer’s End, Goodbye, My Rose Garden is a beautiful period piece that incorporates LGBT views into its shattering narrative. The story follows a bright-eyed immigrant, Hanako, wanting to make a new life in England as an author at the dawn of the twentieth century. She takes a job as a maid to noblewoman Alice, but their relationship takes a turn when Alice asks Hanako to kill her. This poignant tale is beautiful and an honest depiction of love and its conflict with responsibility and society.

The manga is already making waves and receiving constant praise. The characters and their journey to discover love and self-acceptance are as charming as they are relatable and grounded. However, it is the creator, Usui, who really deserves acclaim. Not just for their work on Doughnuts, but having a second serialized story, Onna Tomodachi to Kekkon Shitemita, in monthly Yuri magazine Comic Yuri Hime simultaneously. It is even more remarkable when you consider these two iconic stories are Usui’s first long-running works, as they only contributed one-shots before.

8: Bloom Into You: Regarding Saeki Sayaka

Bloom Into You is possibly the most iconic Yuri series in the past decade, and while the manga deserves its own place on this list, the best thing to come out of the series as a whole is easily the light novels. This trilogy by Adachi and Shimamura creator Hitoma Iruma dives deep into supporting cast member Sayaka. Readers are treated to a delightful journey as she discovers her sexuality, experiences heartbreak, and finally finds herself breaking free and falling in love. With the help of gorgeous illustrations by Nakatani Nio herself, Iruma masterfully captures Sayaka’s unique voice and emotions in this wonderful series. Whether a fan of the originals or not, every Yurijin must check out Regarding Saeki Sayaka.

7: Our Teachers are Dating

The best a Yuri can get. This workplace romance follows two teachers at the start of a new relationship taking nervous yet enthusiastic first steps, including saying I love you, going on their first date, and even sleeping together. It is so heartfelt and salacious that readers will squeal the whole time. Additionally, our heroines are supported in their relationship by everyone they know, their students, colleagues, and even the principal. It is a perfect world for these two lovebirds! Our Teachers are Dating would easily be number one or two in any other year, but the competition is fierce in 2020. So even though this is only number seven, it is still a master class Yuri manga.

6: Amongst Us

Who would have thought that a comedy alternative universe story spinoff of a fantasy action series would be the single best Yuri webcomic this year? Shilin’s astounding artwork illustrations the hilarious and irresistible journey of girlfriends Blackbird and Veloce. These two eccentric young women get into all kinds of everyday mischief that bounces between tender and touching romance, completely outrageous comedy, and downright thirst-inducing sorcery. Seriously, you should buy the first volume for Veloce’s back muscles alone. The storyline skips between time, but both their established relationship and their meeting as teenagers are adorkable and captivating.

Honorable Mention: Éclair

There are a lot of Yuri anthologies out there, and they have done some beautiful things. Many focus on themes like Syrup. Others collect a series of stories by an author into one bound work. However, out of all of them, Éclair is the most successful. ASCII Media Works took some of the genre’s most extraordinary creators and let them do whatever they wanted, and the results are spectacular. The incredible talent behind Éclair somehow packs a full volume’s worth of story and character into just a few pages with every chapter. While the first volume came overseas a few years ago, Yen Press gave Yurijin a gift this year by releasing the entire rest of the series in which readers can get lost.

5: I’m in Love with the Villainess

A small trend of isekai Yuri with villainesses emerged recently, and I honestly had few hopes of I’m in Love with the Villainess. The series is pretty popular, but I often find that this does not denote quality, and with isekai having some institutional issues, I suspected this would fall flat. Then the volume three cover showcased an incredible accomplishment, allowing for a lesbian relationship to blossom into a family with children, and it blew me away. Finally, I read volume one and realized that the series has incredible character, some of the best world-building I have ever seen in a light novel, thoughtful discussions of inequality and societal issues, and most impressively, open and frank discussion of queer identity and life Yuri has ever seen! This one is something special.

4: The Last of Us Part II

Yes, I know this one is not Yuri and that a portion of the population despises this game and will likely be exceptionally angry at me for including it. However, I maintain that it was an incredibly challenging masterpiece. Naughty Dog did not take the easy route out and delivered one of the most devastating media experiences I have ever seen. As I said in my article about the game, playing it changed me, and it sticks with me to this day. The Last of Us Part II earns its spot on this list because it pushed boundaries more with LGBTQ inclusion than any other AAA game. From brave inclusion of LGBTQ themes to queer characters and storylines at its center, the game changes gaming and it will never go back.

3: She-Ra and the Princesses of Power

She-Ra feels like the culmination of all the LGBTQ progress western cartoons have made over the past few years. From The Legend of Korra to Steven Universe, young people are finally seeing more LGBTQ people represented on the small screen. This epic fantasy concluded with an amazing and powerful lesbian romance, delivering on its queer promise and revolutionized representation in a trope-defying crescendo.

2:  The Conditions of Paradise

The greatest single Yuri work of all in 2020 was the English release of Akiko Morishima’s breakthrough manga, The Conditions of Paradise. Initially released in 2007, this anthology detailed the love between adult women. It was in every way a manga ahead of its time, and seeing it finally get a small piece of the recognition it deserves overseas is a true gift. The fact that we can own this legendary piece of Yuri history and Morishima’s other anthologies is nothing short of a blessing from the Yuri goddess.

Honorable Mention: Otherside Picnic

This eerie sci-fi horror series combines the best of pulse-pounding thrillers, complex and intelligent hard science fiction, and exciting Yuri romance. Author Iori Miyazawa spends as much time crafting a well-paced and intriguing narrative about a mysterious world where occult creatures roam as he does establishing two believable and grounded heroes in Sorawo and Toriko. The romance between the two may be slow to start, but their chemistry is undeniable and as the stakes and story build, so too does their relationship. Not only are the light novels incredible, but the series’ manga adaptation is coming soon to the West as well as an upcoming TV anime in early 2021.

1. Yuri subgenres

For a long time, Yuri was not a genre of its own, but elements of romances or bonds between women found in other works. Now, thanks to an increasing library of works, the advent of social media, and a wider audience, Yuri is a genre on its own, with many creators telling different stories in different styles. However, 2020 saw the continued emergence of something extraordinary, subgenres. Yuri is now so vast, we can actually categorize the works within. Depending on their characters, like classic schoolgirl romances or spicy shakaijin office affairs, their world, such as fantasy or isekai series and thrilling science fiction adventures, and even other elements within. One of my personal favorites is the feminist Yuri that emerges from titles like Sexiled, where women celebrate the accomplishments of other women and dismantle power structures stacked against them. Now, no matter what kind of Yurijin you are, there is something for you to love.

I am happy to leave 2020 behind, but I bring with me a renewed love and admiration for Yuri. 2021 looks to be a somehow even better year for the genre, and I am thrilled to experience every minute of it that I can. Yuri has transformed into something far greater than I ever thought it would be, and let us all enjoy its evolution and expansion together in 2021.

I fuxkin love this show, as many people do, though having watched it several times this is my first time drawing some fan art. For whatever reason, I’m these recent years I’ve felt as though liking animation and drawing fan art is childish. I know that’s not true, but it’s hard to shake that feeling when so many people expect me to make “serious” art, when we all know that the most serious art one can make is the art they connect to. And if that means drawing characters that I relate to, then I should.

A couple months ago I had a really negative interaction with someone about my webcomic and it really took a blow to my confidence. I felt like my webcomic was dumb and childish. I tried to be proud about it; “my first hater!” But it really damaged the way I felt about my art.

Recently though, I went and visited a friend I haven’t seen since pre-pandemic and like … she filled me up with so much light and love and confidence that I feel I am blooming again.

Maybe it is immature to like cartoons and to draw fan art, but I don’t care. I’m only 23 and if I were murdered right now Karen and Georgia would call me a child and say “she had her whole life ahead of her.” I’m allowed to like cartoons, especially ones written with Things To Say.

Cartoons and anime are, after all, where I draw the most inspiration for my comic from. And I like really literally can’t quit now. That would be so beyond lame. (I’m currently on hiatus, but I promised I would come back, and I intend to stick to that promise.)
