I made an authentic 1910s recipe on Armistice Day today: originally published in The Bayonne Herald and Greenview Register in 1915, and shared on Bluesky by Kristy Baxter.

It took about 17 minutes at 450 F for gooey but not very runny eggs, adjust to your preferences. I have experimented with oven roasted tomatoes for English Breakfast, and I find that they always need more time in the oven.

For seasoning, I used salt, pepper, powdered garlic, dried herbs, and a dash of adobo seasoning. More fresh grated pepper and some parmesan cheese were excellent additions to the cooked eggs, I will definitely make 1915 Eggs in Tomatoes again.

Blue Willow China is some of the most popular tableware in the South. You may remember that this famous pattern frequently made appearances in “The Andy Griffith Show” as Aunt Bee’s china of choice. Recognized across the globe, this beautiful pattern features a blue-printed scene on white porcelain that depicts nature and historical imagery in the style of Chinese porcelain with pagodas, a weeping willow tree, an ornate boat floating on a lake and two birds in the sky.

Stories vary, but most agree the iconic Blue Willow scene is a tale of forbidden love between the daughter of a powerful man and his secretary. The father felt the secretary was unworthy of his daughter’s affection and not only banished his secretary but constructed a fence to keep his daughter contained. In an attempt to see each other, the daughter and secretary died and were reincarnated as the two birds soaring together near the blue willow tree.

There are more than 500 variations on the pattern worldwide, each with a unique pattern and fretwork around the edges or other decoration.

The patterns of Blue Willow have always fascinated collectors. Even for those who don’t collect, the vibrancy of these blue patterns is captivating.
