Brazil and The Dream of Escape
Tumblr media
I was delighted to find in the Xtras that the machine created to be used by Furfur to use to find out how many demons Shax could requisition for storming the bookshop was inspired by the movie Brazil. This is another nod to Monty Python member Terry Gilliam, who directed this film, and who almost directed the failed GO film in the 1990's.
I love this film. Always have. Yes, I was around when it came out in 1985. I'm that old. It's always been in my top 5 favourite films. And its totally relevant to Good Omens.
Tumblr media
Brazil can be described as a dark dystopian story based on the novel 1984. It doesn't have a happy ending, but its funny, horrific, ludicrous, romantic and timelessly beautiful all at the same time. Its so iconic that when ever I see its influence in other productions its been unmistakable.
It stars Jonathan Pryce long before he was a James Bond villain or the head Sparrow in Game of Thrones, a comedic turn from Robert de Niro and a handful of other famous faces that you are bound to recognise, such Bob Hoskins, Ian Holm and Jim Broadbent.
Pryce, as Sam Lowry, lives in a world that is strictly controlled with paperwork that comes in multiple copies, where people are routinely arrested and tortured and a long running unexplained terrorist campaign sees bombs explode in the most random of places. Sam has dreams of a beautiful woman floating in the sky, and he is a sliver-armoured winged hero trying to rescue her. He eventually finds that she is real, and finds out her name through various means via his work and contacts. He tracks her down, but that is where it all starts to unravel as she is mixed up with an unfortunate case of mistaken identity.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Its easy to see the common themes and elements that run through the film with GO: the desire to run away and escape (that doesn't work,) a totalitarian authority controlling the masses, propaganda, piles of paperwork, an undercurrent of rebellion, torture and abuse, forbidden love between classes, a villain hidden in plain sight.
There is an art deco aesthetic to the film that also carries over to other films and shows it has influenced, and the busy work floor scene that stops on a dime to watch the tv show de jour while the boss isn't looking is one of the highlights of the film.
It was a reference of this that caught my eye in the Cohen Brothers modern fairy tale The Hudsucker Proxy, where they copied the busyness of the work floor for their mail room scenes, but also the art deco aesthetic. That's another film that is always in my top five films, and could go a round of comparisons with GO - its got time stoppage, an angel appearance and a near-godlike manipulator.
Tumblr media
It also appears, surprisingly, in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. The casino at Canto Bight is Brazil inspired, in the way its introduced to us, its decor and the music. I know some people hate this film because of what they did to Luke, but I love it, the whole thing is just utterly gorgeous to look at.
Tumblr media
And if you've watched any of Loki recently, since S2 of that show finished not long ago, you would also seen some influence from Brazil in the retro look.
I love the classic art deco style. my grandparents had an art deco house that I spent many of my childhood hours in. The style itself is a clean, unadorned look, and often is meant to give a look of movement, speed or strength. A classic example of this is the Bentley, of course, which comes from the height of the art deco era in the 1930's.
Tumblr media
Hell is the other place we see the Brazil influence in GO, where is looks like it's constantly several decades behind the times, with overhead projectors and manual typewriters and odd looking not-quite steampunk contraptions.
Tumblr media
Brazil is available to stream on Disney at the moment, if you'd like to take a look. I highly recommend it, its one of those influential films that once you know it, you see its long reach in the most unexpected places.

I’m genuinely shocked that Emma Stone won for Best Actress.
For political diversity reasons and the fact that she won Best Actor for drama at the Golden Globes – the best pointer for Oscar glory – I thought Lily Gladstone had this sewn up.
All other winners were as predicted and for the reasons I posted afew weeks ago.
************
I was 70/30 on Emma/Lily winning. I wanted Lily to win but I was sure Emma was going to take it. Weird and quirky will usually win out.
I didn’t think Emma deserved Best Actress for La La Land. (2015 was poor year for film for me because most of those films weren’t very remarkable. Or memorable.) But Best Actress for Poor Things is very well deserved so I’m happy for her. Pretty sure she didn’t expect it, though. Emma looked truly shocked to win, so I think she was expecting Lily to take it.
My Monday armchair quarterback opinion is that I think it was the marketing campaign that did Lily in. Flowers of the Killer Moon had been promoted as Leo and De Niro’s movie, with Lily as a supporting actress/character - which, if you look at the story in the film and the perspective of the story, makes sense. This was a Leo/Bob vehicle and a story of the white man, and they really lucked out with the spectacular casting of Lily for Mollie. If all of that had been reversed - if the story was told predominantly in Mollie’s perspective as a Lily vehicle, she would’ve walked away with the Oscar last night.
But they didn’t start promoting or marketing or “for your consideration”-ing Lily until after all the reviews came in and everyone was already talking about Lily’s performance. And it’s also because of the strikes - Killers couldn’t be promoted because of the ongoing strikes, so of course the studio is going to lean more heavily on Leo and De Niro, because people know them. They’re bankable.
The other thing to keep in mind (this isn’t to you, anon, but to others who may be reading) is how the Academy votes. The specific guilds individually vote on who the Oscar nominees are - actors decide the acting nominees, sound decides the sound nominees, editors decide editing nominees, etc. (the best picture/documentary/animated/shorts categories are different) - but the entire Academy at large votes on who wins. So the whole Academy is voting for Best Actress, the whole Academy is voting for Best Sound Design, etc. And usually when the whole Academy votes, weird and quirky usually wins.
It’s why I suspect the Screen Actors Guild awards are the most meaningful for the actors - because it’s peer-to-peer recognition. Golden Globes is who schmoozes the best (or it used to be, before the cultural reckoning it had a few years ago) and the Academy is often who arts the best (or who’s toiled the longest and needs career validation the best). But the Screen Actors Guild, and all the guild awards, is who’s the best at our craft. So I hope Lily isn’t too upset - she got that peer-to-peer recognition - and I hope she gets more roles. It looks like it; she has a new streaming series coming soon and it looks phenomenal.
Well, if you made it this far, a few more observations from Oscar Night:
I loved Ryan Gosling and the Kens. I love it when the Oscars get cheesy and nostalgic like that.
The John Cena bit was awkward.
Loved seeing previous winners come back to recognize the nominees but the Academy spoiled themselves. I knew how the acting categories were going to be presented beforehand and I knew they were keeping the tributes a secret for the broadcast, but seeing people on the red carpet and in the audience that we don’t usually see at these events (Nicholas Cage, Ben Kingsley, and Charlize Theron for example and for me, specifically) gave the plot away.
I know it’s tired and overdone, but I love the Jimmy Kimmel/Matt Damon fight. I wish they’d have done something in the broadcast. I honestly thought the critic Jimmy was reading at the end was going to be the Matt Damon bit and for the writing categories, I thought they were going to announce Matt and Ben Affleck as the presenters (since they won their first Oscars for writing Good Will Hunting)...ah, oh well.
The red carpet was absolutely lackluster and very disappointing.
Meghan didn’t show up as Misan’s plus one and Misan didn’t win his category. I mean, the guy was up against Wes Anderson. It’s a no-brainer.
The dancing during the In Memorium segment was...A Choice.
I loved the 7pm start time. More, please!, shouted everyone on the East Coast.
I really can’t wait to see what Oscar bait movie Bradley Cooper does next, and what movie he does that the Academy finally decides “let’s put him out of his misery.” Will it be for a film worthy of the recognition or will it be a lifetime achievement award for a meh performance/film?
I’ve got my bets on lifetime achievement.

2, 7, 11 (i liked these questions a lot, sorry)
LMAO it’s all good, I’m loving these questions too!
2 – Talk about a notable time a narrative or character has looked you dead in the eyes and said “fuck your plan, here’s what we’re actually doing.”
Me predicting my chapter counts for a multi-chapter fic EVERY SINGLE TIME. But more specifically: Neil McCauley in Hotel Vast Horizon. I was planning for him to part ways with Vincent at the end, their respective futures and any subsequent reunions uncertain, but then Bob De Niro looked at me in all his handsome soulful anguish and said, “You bitch. You really wanna make me fuckin’ miserable? AGAIN?” And I folded like an airplane tray table before takeoff. I could not bring myself to do it. It worked out really great in the end, because @tangerinegh0st’s wonderful art inspired me to add a fluffy companion piece, and now I have a whole self-contained Chris Fleming Florida Retirement AU in which they get their happy ending and whatever further expansions I see fit. (Like Chris Shiherlis and his girlfriend coming to visit…)
7 – Tell us about the plot of the first fanfic you ever wrote.
I cannot for the life of me remember! I would have been 10 or 11 years old. But it had something to do with Clarice Starling and Hannibal Lecter. The oldest fic I can kind of remember, that was posted to Livejournal many, many years ago as an accompaniment to a fanmix, was a 500- or 600-word ficlet for Chuck/Blair/Serena from Gossip Girl. The original CW TV show. In like 2007 or 2008. Don’t laugh at me. It was Blair hooking up with Serena to pique Chuck’s interest and jealousy—successfully—and then them inviting him to join in. I love an OT3.
11 – What’s something neat you’ve learned while doing research for something you were writing? Also, how much do you worry about doing research in general?
I’ve learned a lot of prison slang writing from Neil McCauley’s perspective for Some Weird Sin, and my favorite example thus far is “getting out on back door parole” for someone who is serving a life sentence and will die in prison. (Favorite as in “found the most interesting.” Reading about the U.S. penal system is unbelievably grim and depressing.) Doing adequate research on characterization and geographic/historical setting is very high priority for me, which is probably one of the reasons I only write stories/for fandoms where I’m excited to do it. I strive for as much realism as possible to counterbalance the inherent smutty-fairytale/fantasy element of fanfic. It also helps me considerably as a source of inspiration, both narratively and visually. The more information I have to work with, whether it’s sensory data or the kind you get from hunching over textbooks, the more liberated and productive I am as a writer. One of the most vindicating things I’ve heard Michael Mann confess about his own creative process—I forget where, but it was some kind of podcast or print interview—is that he is not very good at “inventing from scratch.” I’m exactly the same way! (Also probably one of the reasons I’m happier writing fanfic than original fiction.) He was originally a documentarian by trade, and his approach to narrative is almost journalistic, grounded foremost in investigation and observation and evolving out of them. Some writers possess that rare and enviable gift where they can conjure brilliant story ideas from thin air. I’m not one of them! So I was happy and relieved to learn that my favorite filmmaker requires the same “academic” bootstrapping. And the guy is a genius, so clearly it’s a winning strategy!

not me sending you a long ass message and Tumblr deleting it halfway through, I... am going to try again with the advent of morning.
but first of all, I just wanted to say that I am very sad to hear that you got some troubling news about your family, and if there is anything that can be done, please let us know! I am not that good at comforting and I don't want to be a snooper, but take care of yourself and sending you all the positive vibes I can muster.
and also small ramble to maybe take off your mind: since today started as a very stressful morning, I might have gone through the Aemond and Patch tag (again. I swear I am not a stalker!), as the best way to ease stress is to read about this grumpy blonde and his adorable puppy.
I noticed that you mentioned 'Novecento' by Bertolucci and I can totally see Aemond wanting to see it (I'd also fall asleep on it) but the reason why I know it is that I studied his father who was a poet and his writing is very interesting even more in the study of rhythm and it also takes into account a lot of the countryside life also portrayed by his son in his movie.
all of this to say, imagine: Aemond with a s/o who has interests that somehow aligns with his own for cinema (like a s/o who is a literature major or a musically talented) and at first, he doesn't notice it but they have their own way of perceiving the movie and their own take in their elements and it's so interesting and insightful.
plus once he notices they are trying to get to know him, better through his interest for movies, he tries to do the same for their own areas of interest and he is so happy when he makes them fluster + makes their eyes glimmer (if anybody got out of their way to learn about my interests, I'd just... crumble).
(also I am definitely checking out 'Don't Look Now' as it is based on a Daphne du Maurier short story and I have been aching to read more of hers since I have read 'Rebecca'!)
alright, with this being said, have a lovely day!
-🌗
Thank you so much for your support dear, I really appreciate it! right now it's just a matter of waiting to see what will happen and there's not much I can do. I do hope everything will be okay though.
Omg no totally go through that tag as many times as you like!!! I'm very flattered to know a silly creation of mine helps with the stress and it makes me super happy knowing someone revisits my work (the Patch posts or other fics) I know I do feel super soft every time someone brings Patch up! Sometimes I'm legit mad he isn't real.
Oh my gossssh I gotta admit I haven't really watched Novecento completely! I got the dvd super cheap (I collect dvds) when I was going through my Bob De Niro phase lmao. I knew it was a long ass movie but I was like, idc I'm totally gonna watch this, and just couldn't. So when looking at my dvd shelf with Aemond in mind, I was like, what's the longest, most pretencious sounding freaking movie ever that I have?
THAT KIND OF RC IS EVERYTHING and ngl that's what I have in mind every time I write for Aemond (me 100% projecting that I'm a fine arts major that loves movies, and I do the same with the rest of my blorbos alskdjflkadsjlkfj) so YES YES YES. I do love the trope of opposites attraction but honestly I'm such a sucker for characters coming together and bonding over the passion for their respective interests they have in common.
Also, I love Don't Look Now! but I saw it a whileeeee ago so a re-watch is overdue! if you watch it I would love to know your thoughts on it!

Fixed stars in natal charts (mega post)
There are many fixed stars but these are only a few, check the planets and angles they are conjunct with. Fixed stars can only be conjunct as stars do not cast out rays, they usually only allow an orb of 0°-2.50°. Any other aspect to it is only meant to enhance or hinder the conjunction, Fixed stars in charts add more tension but result in a stronger individual. These descriptions should be taken with a grain of salt.
Antares | 9°-10° Sagittarius (depending on year): Is one of the 15 Behenian stars with a nature of Mars and Jupiter. It is apart of the constellation Scorpio and makes one tough, determined, but also rambunctious and prone to violence. It also gives understanding and memory, help against evil spirits, and the power of driving them away and binding them. Sagittarius placements 7°-11° will feel this activate this star.

Robert De Niro, Al Pacino & Martin Scorsese
Cinematic Icons Bring The Irishman to Life Adding to Their Catalog of Mob Mayhem
by Brad Balfour
While master actor Robert De Niro and director Martin Scorsese have separately established voluminous and highly praised careers, their work together has stirred hurrahs that have made them Olympians of cinema. Whether it was Taxi Driver or Raging Bull, their collaborations have raised the level of cinematic art and established a dynamic that has been truly special. Over 50 years, the Academy Award-winning filmmaker has also crafted iconic gangster stories from Mean Streets to Goodfellas and Casino. Now The Irishman joins that list.
Scorsese's three 1/2-hour long epic received incredible reviews when it opened the New York Film Festival, and now has racked up ten Oscar nominations including Best Picture. Already available on Netflix, The Irishman was compared to a Rembrandt painting by The New York Times and the movie received an unprecedented 100% "fresh" rating from Rotten Tomatoes.
But getting the film financed for either big or small screen took a lot of wrangling until it became Netflix's. Again, a project presented a daunting challenge for Scorsese, De Niro and its producers. Recalled the legendary 76-year-old director, "There's a really long history [to this] because Bob and I really wanted to work together since we did Casino which was in 1995. We would check with each other; what we were doing, what projects we were doing, things like that, never quite connecting."
Tumblr media
Added the Oscar-winning actor, "Yeah, we were talking about two years before, and I said now I should just read it for research on Frankie Machine. Then I read it."
De Niro was referring to another project that had been under consideration, The Winter of Frankie Machine. Though it was pitched for possible production, it fell short to this project to get made, based on a different book. How did it get started? Producer Jane Rosenthal had explained that, in 2007, she and partner De Niro were trying to make Frankie Machine. Said Rosenthal, "On a call with Paramount Pictures head Brad Bray, Bob brought up this other book that he had read and said, 'Maybe we could do this together or maybe not.' The book was I Hear You Paint Houses, and we decided we should do that."
With that, Scorsese responded, "When Bob presented the book to me, it seemed that he was very strongly attached to the character. We didn't have to say much. After the phone call with Brad, I got Steve [Zaillian] to write the script. That was about ten years ago."
Based on Charles Brandt's 2004's above-mentioned book, The Irishman stars De Niro [who is part Irish] as Frank "The Irishman" Sheeran. He is teamed with Al Pacino and Joe Pesci; as Jimmy Hoffa and Russell Bufalino, respectively.
In the movie, Sheeran recounts both his job as a union official and as a hitman for the Bufalino crime family. Born in 1920 to Philadelphia-based house painter Thomas Francis Sheeran Jr. and Mary Agnes Hanson, the young Sheeran grew up in Darby, Pennsylvania – a small working-class Irish neighborhood on the outskirts of Philadelphia. As a World War II veteran, he learned his killing skills fighting in important battles in Italy.
As the killer recalls his Mafia life, the film flashes back to the hits that defined his career. It also discusses the part he claims to have played in the disappearance of life-long friend Hoffa, the former president of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, who mysteriously vanished in late July 1975, at age 62. A classic mobbed-up union figure fighting for his constituency – while taking wads of cash under the table – Hoffa provided a challenge for any actor.
Tumblr media
For Scorsese, this production offered an opportunity for him to finally work with Pacino, who plays the legendary Teamster leader. As the award-winning actor Pacino remembered, "Oh yeah, it was because in today's world, you have a lot of access to those kinds of characters because of people who know them, or knew them, there's books about them. We had access to all that. When I played Serpico, the thought of him on a video somewhere was, I mean it was not even a thought, but I had him. That's always an advantage. But Jimmy knew so much about it, I grew up at the time of it."
The movie also re-teamed the director with De Niro and Pesci, who last worked together maybe 25 years ago in Casino. As De Niro noted, "Opportunities passed and then Joe and I would talk about the movie too. We went through our own process of talking about it as far as all that goes. But I'm just happy we all finally got to do it because it did take a long time. The way that Martin was able to do it and the way that we wanted to do it, we were lucky to have the people that put up the money."
Scorsese agreed. "Yes, that was the key! We couldn't get a backer, there was no way, for years. But ultimately it was [Netflix's head] Ted Serrandos. He actually backed the film and financed it."
Tumblr media
Still, there was another huge challenge facing the director. The story spans three decades and more. And that offered a unique opportunity. "[Visual effects supervisor] Pablo Helman and [Cristiane Teles] Maia had come up with a solution for the de-aging process that wouldn't interfere with Bob and Joe,” Scorsese said, “like talking to each other with helmets on or tennis balls on their faces. We did tests a few years ago, but it was a costly experiment. Yet Ted and everyone at Netflix said, 'Go with it!' Creatively, they turned to us and there was no interference of any kind. There were some notes from time to time and we addressed them or not.
"The point is that it was necessarily an interesting hybrid in a way, because it hung in the balance [for] what a film is,” Scorsese continued. “All of this is an extraordinary time of change, but when it comes down to it, ultimately, we all felt the picture had to be made for ourselves really. We had to check in with each other; you know, as you grow older, people change differently at times and you grow separate away from each other. This was not the case; we just kept coming back and still have a telepathic way of working together, particularly with certain characters. And, it’s my first time working with Al, finally!"
To which, Pacino chimed in, "I read the script, I promise!"
Scorsese replied to that: "I know, because the marks you hit, and the lines were very specific. Certain people think he would have a lack of appreciation... You know it's there, it's in the script, but it is the interpretation.”
Tumblr media
The 79-year-old master thespian added, "Somebody said to me, about the age thing, and they showed me this thing of Bob doing Goodfellas, and I thought, 'why is he doing this again?'"
The seasoned moviemaker explained, "I always told this story about the first day shooting with you, getting out of the chair. It was you and me, and you were complaining about ‘those Kennedys, they go to war with these people’ – remember on the TV? That was the first time I have ever worked with you too and I said, 'That's great!' It was really good what he did and I said one more take and he gets up out of the chair, yells at the TV and leaves again, at which point I say, 'Good, maybe we'll do one more and I think we can move on.'
"There were two cameras going, and this was [with] the three lenses on each camera. I think it was [cinematographer] Rodrigo Pietro, Pablo and I think Gary. It isn't just about lenses and computer imagery. It's about posture, it's about movement, it's about everything, so there were people on each element dealing with the actors on this. And Gary came over and said, 'I have to tell you something.' And I'm like 'What?' and he says, 'He's supposed to be 49.' I said, 'Why are you telling me?' He says, 'No, you have to tell him!' I walk over and say, 'Al, everything's fine, but one of the things is that when you get out of the chair, you're supposed to be 49.' Al's like, 'Oh God, okay!' We were sculpting this whole thing, it was like working models in a way, plus the truth about how they're interpreting. It's an extraordinary experience!"
And with that in mind, Pacino acknowledged, "Young again!"

The definitive list of sexy, ugly dudes
I ain’t got no type, ugly motherfuckers is the only thing that I like. Some of y’all are patting yourselves on the back for supporting the dad bod. I double down. I am here for the weirdos, the creeps, the fat ones and the like. If you don’t quit playing with these pretty boys who don’t know where a clitoris is already, you’re just hurting yourself, sweetie. Here is the official list of the sexiest ugly dudes, living and dead.
1. James Gandolfini. The fucking GOAT. I want a Gandolfini in the streets and a Tony in the sheets.
2. Steve Buscemi. Yes, he’s got huge, watery bug eyes that are always seemingly reddened from stress, or maybe allergies? Doesn’t matter. Steve Buscemi has a certain je ne sais quoi that leaves me shivering in me timber(land)s.
3. Paul Giamatti. Ever since Sideways I knew that Giamatti had that special self-loathing gift of gab that is simply irresistible.
4. Philip Seymour Hoffman. RIP, big dude. You were a fucking maestro in the art of acting. Scary, unhinged, impulsive, emotional - a tour de force in sexual energy.
5. Anthony Bourdain. Also dead. I’m suspecting a theme here. Do I want to be dead?? I don’t think so...
6. Rhys Ifans. Not a household name. But you know his face. He’s Hugh Grant’s insane, unemployed, lurching roommate in Notting Hill. Sweet, honest, funny and principled. What he lacks in good hygiene he makes up for in heart.
7. Adam Driver. This one is so obvious it’s dumb to include it. Have you seen him shirtless? Good grief.
8. Pete Davidson. I even wrote a whole goddamn sketch about it because the man’s sexual magnetism is off the charts. He’s bagging the baddest ladies in the world so casually that it feels like there’s no one he can’t holler at.
youtube
9. Tim Roth. There is nothing quite like an Englishman who is so disinterested that it comes across hostile. It’s rude, it’s self-important, it’s hot.
10. Robert De Niro. He’s maybe 85 (??? I’m not fact-checking so...) and can get it any day of the week. Best part of all, he probably doesn’t even want it!
11. Peter Dinklage. Tyrion Lannister was such an OG that he didn’t need the famous name to woo the finest of maidens. I’m not one but he can woo me any time he feels so inclined.
12. Billy Bob Thornton. Damn, just writing his name gives me goosebumps. The thought of his beady, judgemental eyes stirs my mind up with lurid thoughts.
13. Daniel Day Lewis. Is he ugly? Is he handsome? I don’t know anymore. His nose is crooked and he seems weird as fuck so you know I’m on board. He can get lost in the character study that is my bosom. Knowing him, he’ll probably refuse because it’s “too easy”. He isn’t wrong!
14. Tommy Lee Jones. Can’t forget this raspy devil. He’s old and gritty and we haven’t seen him in a while but something tells me he’s doing chin-ups in a garage as we speak.
15. John Malkovich. The creepiest man I’ve ever seen is also...the sexiest? I don’t write the rules, guys. I’m just a hot-blooded, American woman with a thing for men with emotional problems. Sue me!
Good looks are so overrated. Don’t @ me.

Anton Corbijn – Photographer
Background
Anton Corbijn is a famous Dutch photographer, mainly known for his portraiture work, primarily with bands, over the last thirty years.
One of four children, Corbijn was born in 1955 in The Netherlands and is the son of a parson and a nurse.
Corbijn began his career as a music photographer when he saw the Dutch musician Herman Brood playing in a café in Groningen around 1975.
From the late 1970’s, New Musical Express (NME), featured his work on a regular basis, often using one of his images on the front page, including a portrait of David Bowie wearing a loincloth backstage in New York when starring in The Elephant Man. Corbijn was also a regular contributor to The Face, a glossy monthly post-punk life style / music magazine and made his name photographing in black and white.
Tumblr media
David Bowie, The Elephant Man, 1980
Tumblr media
Morrissey, The Smiths, 1990
Corbijn’s work
Corbijn has photographed Bob Dylan, Depeche Mode, Tom Waits, Bruce Springsteen, Miles Davis, Björk, Robert De Niro, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Morrissey, Simple Minds, Clint Eastwood, Annie Lennox, and the Eurythmics, amongst others.
Perhaps his most famous and longest standing association is with U2, which includes pictures of the band on their first US tour, taking pictures for their albums The Joshua Tree and Achtung Baby.
Some examples of Corbijn’s work
Tumblr media
Nick Cave – 1996
This image is a very stark, serious and moody black and white portrait of the Australian rock star, Nick Cave. The subject is reasonably formal with a shirt and smart coat on and he is standing in front of a wall that has leading lines taking your view back towards the subject’s eyes that are looking intently to the left of the frame.
Tumblr media
Keith Richards – 1980
The image is a candid, editorial portrait of Keith Richards from the Rolling Stones. The use of black and white adds to the drama and shows the subject exhaling smoke while looking directly at the viewer as if in defiance. The pose is natural, uncompromising and informal and the low-key lighting shows the deep lines and shadows on the subject’s face.
Tumblr media
U2 – Death Valley – 1987
This image is of the Irish rock band U2 and was used for their 1988 album, “The Joshua Tree” as the cover. The shot is very posed with three members of the band looking directly at the viewer while Bono, the lead singer, gazes to the left of the frame as if deep in thought. The composition of the image helps show the vastness of the landscape, occupying over half the frame, while the band occupy the remaining space on the left of the frame.
Tumblr media
Henry Rollins – 1994
This portrait shows American actor, musician, comedian and media host, Henry Rollins. The image is both dramatic and alarming as the subject appears to be screaming directly at the viewer. The low-key lighting adds to the drama and accentuates the lines in his face and tendons in his neck. It’s a serious shot and the viewer is left somewhat confused by the reason for the subject’s anger.
Tumblr media
Clint Eastwood – 1994
This image is of the American actor/director, Clint Eastwood. The use of black and white adds to the serious mood of this image and Eastwood’s finger pointing at the viewer is reminiscent of the publicity shot for his earlier movie, Magnum, where his finger is replaced by a gun.
Tumblr media
Tom Waits – 2004
This image is of American musician Tom Waits. Leading lines take our eye along the bright sunshine on the railway tracks and our eye is drawn to the bright light behind Wait’s head and the white light bouncing back from the drum he is sitting on. The use of high contrast black and white add to the timelessness feel of the image.
Tumblr media
Depeche Mode – 1993
This image of English synth/rock band, Depeche Mode shows the band is sombre mood. As with the earlier shot of U2, the lead singer looks away out of the left of the frame, following the rule of gaze while the remaining band members looking directly at the viewer. The background is reasonably non-descript and adds to the gritty black and white image.
Tumblr media
Jonny Cash – 1994
This shot is of the American musician Jonny Cash and is a good example of reportage/pseudo paparazzi as the subject is looking out the car window, apparently oblivious to the photographer.
Film and video direction
Corbijn began his music video directing career when early eighties German band Palais Schaumburg, asked him to direct their video. After seeing the resulting video, the band Propaganda hired Corbijn direct the video for their track “Dr. Mabuse”. Subsequently he directed videos for David Sylvian, Echo & the Bunnymen, Depeche Mode, Roxette and U2. His first video in colour was made for U2 in 1984 for their single "Pride".
In 1994 Corbijn directed a short film about Captain Beefheart for the BBC called “Some Yoyo Stuff”. He made his feature film debut with “Control”, a film about the life of Joy Division frontman Ian Curtis. It premiered to critical acclaim at the Cannes Film Festival on 17 May 2007. “Control” was the big winner of the Director's Fortnight winning the CICAE Art & Essai prize for best film and also won the Michael Powell award for best new British feature at the Edinburgh International Film Festival.
