'Blue Beetle' (2023) film
-watched 4/2/2024- 2 [3/4] stars- on Max
I couldn't really get into this movie; that's probably only because, I never even heard of this superhero before now.

r is the team baby and mapi is like a big sister to her
it’s gameday and mapi always braids readers hair before a match, but with mapis injury, she can’t do it. So Aitana takes the role of being your big sister and helps you with everything,

Barcelona Femení x reader request
-> With Mapi injured, your usual plan gets changed
-> Very short! I hope you like it - was very fun to throw something quick and small together
-> Little pt.2 - On the Road
➳ Masterlist

It was weird.
Ever since joining the team last season, Mapi had been a constant in your everyday life, and one day to the next, she was gone. She didn’t die, duh, but she was injured. And while a lot of people on the team injured themselves or sometimes just had to sit out – never Mapi.
She had taken you under her wing as soon as she saw you, but her plan of making you her accomplice didn’t work, as you were much too introverted to embarrass yourself in public like she intended to do.
Ingrid had always just scoffed at her girlfriend whenever she had sent you on a wild goose chase for something completely made up, while Maria would laugh at you. The Norwegian was always quick to solve the mysteries, pressing soft kisses on your forehead whenever you got annoyed, ignoring her girlfriend until she stopped.
While everyone on the team was great friends, even a family, the relationship between you and Mapi was just different and everybody knew that – which is also why everybody could see just how much it affected you that your favorite defender wasn’t there. Especially when you were in the starting eleven.
Ingrid had religiously been updating her girlfriend, reassuring her that you were in fact totally fine and not freaking out. But you weren’t fine.
The girls tried to help where they could – Lucy and Keira had picked you up from home, Pina sat next to you on the bus (Patri and Ona behind you, making for a very funny ride), Jana and Bruna had made you a new playlist that you were all listening to and Alexia did what she did best – she observed and helped when needed.
In the changing room, most things took their natural course as every girl had their slightly different routine and needs before a game.
You were so incredibly nervous. Making the starting eleven was big, especially for a club like Barcelona, but the team for the day was quite experienced, calming you down just a little. Esme looked just as nervous as you, she was a striker alongside you, making for a very young frontline.
Aitana saw you brushing your hair again and again and again, just to do absolutely nothing with it, just patting your own head in a calming manner. After three minutes she took pity – remembering that your older sister figure wasn’t there.
“No need to rip out hair Cari. Let me do it.”
The entire team had affectionally started to call you Cari in your first season – it was short for cariño, and you loved it.
As still as humanly possible you sat in your cubby, letting the ballon d'or winner do her thing, sometimes handing her a brush, a ponytail holder, or a bobby pin.
“I can’t do it like Maria, so I did something else. Do you like it, Cari?” She indeed had done a different hairstyle, but it was still braided out of your face and it looked cute.
“It’s perfect Tana, thank you!” The brunette couldn’t help but smile, seeing you come to life just a little more after such a simple action from her. In thanks you kissed her cheek, squeaking when Sandra poked you into your side, making all three of you laugh.
“Let me help you with your shirt.” The goalkeeper didn’t even wait for an answer, helping you tuck your shirt inside of the shorts – just like Mapi would do for you. “Thank you!”
Now you felt much more prepared and ready to take on FC Rosengård.
Walking in, instead of a mascot's hands you were holding Lucy’s who smiled at you so brightly that you couldn’t be sad anymore. “You’ll do her proud kid – don’t worry.”
The Brit had indeed been right. Mapi had been close to tears sitting next to Frido in the stands, as you scored an amazing goal in the second half, dedicating it to her, as you sprinted over to where they sat, pressing a kiss to your palm, and practically throwing it at her.
“Look at my sister!”

The text of the letter and names of the celebrities that signed it under the cut.
"October 23, 2023
Dear President Biden,
We are heartened by Friday’s release of the two American hostages, Judith Ranaan and her daughter Natalie Ranaan and by today’s release of two Israelis, Nurit Cooper and Yocheved Lifshitz, whose husbands remain in captivity.
But our relief is tempered by our overwhelming concern that 220 innocent people, including 30 children, remain captive by terrorists, threatened with torture and death. They were taken by Hamas in the savage massacre of October 7, where over 1,400 Israelis were slaughtered - women raped, families burned alive, and infants beheaded.
Thank you for your unshakable moral conviction, leadership, and support for the Jewish people, who have been terrorized by Hamas since the group’s founding over 35 years ago, and for the Palestinians, who have also been terrorized, oppressed, and victimized by Hamas for the last 17 years that the group has been governing Gaza.
We all want the same thing: Freedom for Israelis and Palestinians to live side by side in peace. Freedom from the brutal violence spread by Hamas. And most urgently, in this moment, freedom for the hostages.
We urge everyone to not rest until all hostages are released. No hostage can be left behind. Whether American, Argentinian, Australian, Azerbaijani, Brazilian, British, Canadian, Chilean, Chinese, Danish, Dutch, Eritrean, Filipino, French, German, Indian, Israeli, Italian, Kazakh, Mexican, Panamanian, Paraguayan, Peruvian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, South African, Spanish, Sri Lankan, Thai, Ukrainian, Uzbekistani or otherwise, we need to bring them home.

"No worries, darling..."
“ROSE KENNEDY”
(a snippet)
A dignified and not unattractive drag-queen of a certain age, handling her Rose Kennedys very well, affectionately revisits her Democrat activist years for some admiring young gays, as they sit together in a bar.
She gets tearful remembering Bobby Kennedy, and you surprise yourself wondering if that’s Balmoral pink you see, carefully applied to her now slightly trembling lips.
Suddenly, a rude comment disrupts the atmosphere. What a heel, one who manages to insult her age, her sexuality and her political identity all at the same time!
They stand up, the heel and the young gays, a chair toppled down, and the bartender calls: “Hey! No brawls in my bar!”
The ”Rose Kennedy” drag-queen lady gets up as well, planting her feet well on the ground, and facing the man who insulted her. She tilts her head, addressing the bartender: “No worries, darling! And we’re ready for another round, here!”
Then, she half turns in a fluid instant gesture, scooping up energy, and her right-hand fist whams forward like a truck against the offender’s jaw.
Among laughs and catcalls, some acolytes stand in shame by their felled group-leader, who barely manages to get up, before the general counting declares him a knock-out. The group wisely retreat toward the exit, while the bartender puts another glass in front of the drag-queen lady:
“Here, this one’s on the house.”
This little thing I wrote was inspired by a dear friend’s cocktail choice, which made me dream up a fierce and powerful figure, to celebrate this Pride month.
How did that come about?
The cocktail’s name called back for me the memory of Lady Pearl in the old Altman’s movie “Nashville”, when she says: - Only time I ever went hog-wild, around the bend, was for the Kennedy boys. But they were different. -
And then I made her into a transwoman lady, as dignified as Bernadette in “Priscilla, Queen of the Desert”, and in my writing I made her victorious over brutal ignorance.
In real life, I just had to watch in rage a video where three bulky urban police agents beat up and pepper spray transwoman Bruna they were arresting, apparently because she was agitated and causing a ruckus in the street. The fact is unclear. But that violence? See for yourself:
It happened in Milan, on May 25. Now Bruna is looking for justice.

RELATIONSHIP TO GREER: MOTHER’S BEST FRIEND’S DAUGHTER
Ah, mothers. Always the most tenuous of relationships in a girl’s life. Lucia and her mother were no different, often at odds with each other, especially during the teenage years. And growing up, that meant that anyone her mother brought about toting as wonderful left Lucia more likely to give a roll of her eyes and a sneer in greeting than anything without attitude. And that included her mother’s best friend, none other than the matriarch of the Morrison family, Greer’s mother.
The two women went to college together and had been friends ever since. When they had daughters at the same time - both born in October of 2000 - it was like some sort of act of divinity. At least that’s what Lucia’s mother believed, prone to making everything revolve around religion.
Growing up, it was clear their mothers hoped that Greer and Lucia would be best friends, just as they were. However, the two headstrong girls, similar in some ways and opposite in others, were more prone to butting heads than truly getting along, fighting for dominance in whatever relationship they cobbled together while living across the country and only seeing each other when their mothers decided was necessary.
The Olivo’s - or at least Lucia and her mother - spent a handful of summers out in the Hamptons with the Morrison’s, or other holiday’s in the city, when there were familial obligations keeping them on the west coast. And even still, while the two girls did get along - especially as they turned into teens and learned the fun of partying - they often found themselves trying to best the other instead.
IC QUESTION: “You wouldn’t have wanted Greer to disappear, would you?”
Lucia scoffed, her eyes rolling. “Are you kidding?” she said, eyebrows raised up high on her forehead before she leaned back in her seat, arms crossing over her chest. “Why would I have wanted that? I’m not some jealous perv,” she continued, sticking out her lower lip. “Besides, I’m planning to go to law school. I know you can’t actually question me about anything without a lawyer present. So nice try, but I’m not an idiot,” she finished, mouth snapping shut with finality that made it clear she wouldn’t utter another peep.

Lucia grew up in a very very catholic family, the only child of two first generation parents who, while growing up with family money, still expected their children to take full advantage of the opportunities that were provided to them in this country.
She still presents herself as quite religious - and it’s not that she doesn’t believe in it, it’s more that she...bends the religion to sort her own needs
Her father worked in Hollywood, and her mother, a failed actress herself (they met on a film set), married when they were fairly young, both having little family in California other than their parents, who had immigrated to the US.
Her mother came from money - so the acting working out wasn’t exactly necessary, but it was definitely a hit to her pride
Which then resulted in her hopes and dreams being transferred to her only daughter, none other than Lucia
While her parents both had chosen “frivolous” careers, Lucia watched Legally Blonde at a total of six years old and immediately declared she wanted to be Elle Woods - and never wavered in that plan for a single second
She might be at Ogden for undergrad, but it’s Harvard Law or bust, baby

SOME FUN FACTS
yes, she has a very similar coke cross to kathryn in cruel intentions
anytime she goes out, she’ll positively squeal about doing shots until she has everyone throwing back (gag) vodka with her
loves a lemondrop shot
but more importantly - loves a themed shot
or ordering something purely for the campyness of it, like a sex on the beach when she’s trying to get someone to want to f*ck her
despite wanting to be a lawyer, she has perfect the art of a thirst trap - dancing videos on tik tok, the perfectly pouty instagram story, showing off a short dress, etc etc
she loves arguing and bossying people around!!! she’ll do it just for fun!!!
per the uuuuge, this is not finished (and likely never will be), but i think it’s enough to get started off of???? idk she’s another evil one so if you wanna plot, like this and i’ll come at yah 🥰 the usual plots are wanted as always - drama, angst, fwb, enemies, u know u know the vibes

The Mosley Review: Blue Beetle
I believe we're all familiar with the term "suspension of disbelief" correct? I mean, you can say that about the majority of films in the superhero genre, but man does this film truly take that term to a level that I haven't seen in a while. For the longest time we have been treated to more grounded superhero films that had fantastical elements, but felt tangible and above all, possible. When dealing with alien tech in these films, yeah its supposed to be over the top, but somewhere along the way the tone needs to center itself for us to stay engaged throughout the film while being pelted by nonstop CGI madness. As a massive DC fan, the character of Blue Beetle has always been flashy and they nailed that aspect with the beautiful color scheme and visuals. This film truly leaned into the neo 80's sci fi style complete with plenty of neon blue and purple. The core of the film is about the power of family, but it lacks balance in trying to represent the Latino culture while trying to deliver a decent origin story that isn't filled to the brim with boring stereotypical character archetypes. You can throw as much kinetic energy on screen with cool visuals, but it means nothing if the story has nothing to say.
Xolo Maridueña was charming and fun to watch as Jamie Reyes. I loved that he was always connected to his family and how he was a brilliant kid. I engaged with his growth as the film progressed, but I wish he had toned down the characters reactions to the Scarab. He spends most of the film screaming and freaking out and I wish there was more moments of him actually stopping and trying to figure out the new tech and his abilities. By the time he finally becomes a sort of hero, I liked his dedication, but he could've been directed better in how he got there. Belissa Escobedo was good as his annoying and angsty sister Milagro Reyes. There were moments where I wish she would pull back the constant negative and snarky comments as they completely stop the momentum of a scene. Damián Alcázar was awesome and heartfelt as Jamie's father Alberto Reyes. He was the core of the family and I enjoyed his scenes the most as he imparted the wisdom and calm the story needed. Elpidia Carrillo was good as Jamie's mother Rocio Reyes and the strength she portrays later in the film was astounding. Adriana Barraza was amazing and stole the film as Jamie's grandmother, Nana. I loved that there was more to her than the strong and lovable character in the background. George Lopez was fun and sometimes hilarious as Jamie's uncle, Rudy Reyes. He brings back that infectious energy that we all love him for and his expert comedic timing is on display. Even though he was paranoid most of the time, he was right and a brilliant engineer. Bruna Marquezine was really good as Jenny Kord and I liked that she had a strong moral compass in the film. Her chemistry with Jamie was forced at times, but levels out once everything slows down. Raoul Max Trujillo was good as the stoic fighter and bodyguard Ignacio Carapax. He pretty much was the person for Jamie to fight in the film, but there was more to his story and it made him more than a cardboard cut out villain. Susan Sarandon was decent as Jenny's aunt, Victoria Kord. She was your typical crooked and manipulative business woman that had the cliche rule the world with a new weapon program idea. Honestly, you were just waiting for her to be dealt with in some form and you can tell Susan was just there to have fun.
The score by Bobby Kalic was fun and filled with the classic 80's techno infused sound. It really hits hard when we get into the history of the original Blue Beetle and when we get to see his lair. The visual design of the film was vibrant as I mentioned before with the neon accents. I really liked that the suit was practical and the action was fun to watch when the camera was pulled back and still. The film was a decent introduction of the character and the emotional family story was the core of the film, but the film truly does lack focus. There are so many ideas thrown around and the plot of the film was so bland that after while it felt like a chore to get to the end. Although we're dealing with alien tech, I wish this film was way more grounded, slowed down and less crowded. In the grand scheme of superhero films, this was a more middle of the road adventure. Its a good watch, but nothing that elevates the genre in meaningful or extremely impactful way. Let me know what you thought of the film or my review in comments below. Thanks for reading!

First Take: Blue Beetle - how and why did film Twitter write it off that early?
SYNOPSIS: An alien scarab chooses Jaime Reyes to be its symbiotic host, bestowing the recent college graduate with a suit of armor that's capable of extraordinary powers, forever changing his destiny as he becomes the superhero known as Blue Beetle.
DC'S run of late has been very hit and miss, you just have to look at the box office returns to see how the extended universe has fared post-Snyder to see how fans have taken to it. But with two more films before Mr Gunn takes over fully, Blue Beetle feels like the end of school term summer party, the season finale if you will, that just goes out to have some fun before Aquaman 2 takes us home later in the year.
The Mexican representation is strong with Angel Manuel Soto’s direction, and coming in at 2 hours 7 minutes, it gets the job done with a good pace (the 7 minutes are end credits), although at times feeling a bit cliched for its own good. Saying that, Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer’s script does have some fun with the whole origin story, as it uses the formula that rival Marvel used for Ant-Man 1, which is taking humour and heaviness and blending the two together. Plus on the tech side, we have two names from the indie scene to round it all out- it’s shot well by Pawel Pogorzelski, and fellow Ari Aster collaborator Bobby Krlic handles the score.
As for the cast, we have Xolo Mariduena as the lead, and it is obvious that he could carry this franchise if DC push on with a sequel under the new Gunn/Safran regime - he handles this role fairly well, and he could easily grow into the character more if he is given the chance to do so. They also leaned into the world of the telenovela while casting, with Bruna Marquezine, Adriana Barraza, Damian Alcazar and Raoul Trujillo representing the local culture, with George Lopez as the comic relief, and Susan Sarandon as a rare villainous character. Sure, Twitter and the comics community might’ve ripped this one apart, but all things considered, with the background of this film’s commissioning (originally being made for HBO Max)... it will find its audience regardless of being a box office bomb in cinemas.
THE VERDICT
Blue Beetle is a perfectly fine, fun, but predictable DC film that just goes out to have as much of a good time as it can. As a standalone thing, it works. But with the wider restructure of the studio looming, and that box office result, whether it gets a sequel or not remains to be seen- if it does, then this could be a bit of a refreshing new franchise.
RATING: 3.5/5
