The three days that make up the sixth and seventh lunar months, known as Sambok or 삼복, are thought to be the hottest days of the year. The three days—Chobok ~ 초복, or the first day, Jungbok ~ 중복, or the middle day, and Malbok ~ 말복, or the last day—occur at intervals of ten days and are also referred to as "The three dog days." People strive to eat more nutritious food during these days so they will have more energy to withstand the heat. Eating healthy food to maintain energy and combat the heat is one of the customs of Boknal. Koreans start eating Samgyetang, or ginseng chicken soup, on the first day of Boknal, Chobok day. Other foods to combat the heat during summer days in Korea, can be Naegmyeon ~ 냉면 or the iced noodles and of course the delicious dessert called Bingsu ~ 빙수. Your post reminded me. Years ago there was huge controversy about that Chinese dog eating festival, Americans were going crazy about it. Spewing about how can someone be so cruel as to eat dogs? That the festival should be banned. Even going on racist rants against the Chinese. Of course when people point of how these people also eat animals they'd get angry, like how can they not see the hypocrisy? The cognitive dissonance of these people.

yep. it’s because speciesism is completely arbitrary. westerners (and actually a ton of asians) have classified dogs as “pets”, so “not for eating”. there is no logic or consistency involved in this apart from “they’re cute and listen to me”. so, when another group violates their arbitrary morals, they get outraged. funnily enough, they also attack muslims, jews, and hindis for NOT eating cows or pigs. it’s all about “these people are different from me, they’re doing things that i don’t do and aren’t doing things that i do. everyone should be like me”.

i WILL give them a slight defense though in that although animal farms are cruel, they’re not cruel to be cruel, they are cruel as a result of exploitation and objectification. but for the traditional dog eating festivals (i’m not sure if this belief is the same in china, i’m more familiar with the korean tradition (boknal), dog meat trade, and beliefs), there is a belief that suffering makes the meat more tender and delicious, so the dogs will be beaten, swung by their tails, stabbed, and even boiled alive in order to make the “most delicious meat”. and there are no laws against it because in korea, if you own the dog, it is not a living being under law, it is considered their property to do with what they wish, including killing them. and dog meat farms are horrendous, with zero welfare laws because, as i said, if you own the dogs, you can do whatever you want (especially since even in the weak animal abuse laws korea has, neglect is not counted as abuse, so lack of water, food, and adequate treatment is perfectly fine). even in the case of horrific animal abuse, in korea you have to get the owner to agree to hand over their animals, taking abused animals is theft and you will be arrested and charged. the most the police can do is fine the owners, who still get to keep the animals and even if they somehow get them taken off, there’s no banning someone from getting more animals there, so they can just get more. and this is best case scenario for PETS, not ‘farm animals’. here’s a brief article about it

at the very least, if that is exposed on western factory farms, charges are brought forward, not that it really stops them. the industry evaluated that the fines they receive for animal abuse are less than the money they make by cutting corners that result in animal abuse. yeah.....basically, no one cares about any animals apart from ones they personally like. both sides fucking suck, and like i said, at least i can say this without being a fucking hypocrite.

i also believe that earthling ed went to an anti dog festival protest and confronted people (in his nice, prim way he always does) about their hypocrisy. it was a really good video. even in korea and china, where in the younger generation, the attitudes are changing because they’re now growing up with dogs as pets and seeing dogs as pets in media their entire lives, so they’re switching to the western view of “dogs are friends, not food. chickens, cows, pigs, etc. are all food”. it makes zero sense. why is abuse and killing of one species becoming not okay when the exact same treatment of other animals is still fine?

About a year ago me and a Korean friend passed a foreigner and a dog on the street. My friend looked utterly surprised as he saw the dog. 

I thought that it was because of the dog’s temper, as he/she was pulling the leash making it hard for the owner to keep up. Or that it was because a foreigner was walking a dog. Now I know the real reason behind my friend’s reaction. The dog looked like a dark coated version of the Nureongi. The Nureongi, or yellow one (direct translation), is a South Korean dog that is commonly raised for his/her meat, and is rarely kept as a companion, a friend.  On Facebook I follow Marc Chang and his “The Animal Hope & Wellness Foundation”. Through his videos, and other documentation of his trips to South Korea to save dogs from the meat market I’ve learned a lot. I know it is wrong to just say “don’t eat dogs because they’re like our babies,” this should be for all animals out there, suffering, alone and in pain, in agony, screaming for help in the dark. I respect people who do not eat meat, and I respect those who do, BUT the torture that all animals go through, the life they live before their life is taken from them, to be put on someone’s plate, is not right. To be hit, strangled, and boiled alive is not right. 

Sorry about this sudden post, and a short one, and a not so detailed one, and I thought many times to delete what I wrote because I feel like I may not have expressed myself in the right way, or right information or.. but I just had to let my heart breath.
