Nitiman — Normalizing reactions to queer relationships in BL

With that title, you're probably like "Rae, wth are you talking about?", but hear me out. The show is doing something really interesting in the way it's showcasing reactions to Bbomb and Jin's relationship. We're used to the very formulaic plot where the relationship is revealed and it's immediately met with disapproval/adversity which eventually leads to a break up (cue the Episode 11™️ curse) followed by an often half-baked reunion and happy ending. Nitiman is turning that formula on its head and it's honestly so refreshing.

It's implied that Jin has only dated girls in the past, but literally no one bats an eye when he and Bbomb start dating. They are now in relationship and all of the important people in their lives have started to find out, but nobody has made a big deal about it. Jin's sisters literally found Bbomb half naked in his bed and were just like "that's your friend, huh? 😏" and that was the end of it. In today's episode it was implied that Jin's mother may also know about their relationship and her response was to include Bbomb in the family picture.

What's the message here? Queer romantic relationships are just like heteroromantic relationships; they're both just about two people finding each other and falling in love.

P. S. It looks like Jin is going to tell Bbomb's mother about their relationship in next week's episode. I hope that she's able to understand and accept them as well.

The way Bbomb looks at Jin and the way Jin just keeps fake smiling the whole time and the way he asks, at the very end, about Jin finding a reason to smile and it's just so absolutely adorable. The one-sided flirting, the miunderstanding, the constant forced proximity by friends, everything is adding up to be so, so good!

I am re watching 2gether the series since I watched History 3: Make Our Days Count followed by Until We Meet Again and I just needed something happy. I get I was warned about Until We Meet Again, but it was still hard to watch. It was also strange seeing Kao as Korn when I got so used to him as Nubsib. History 3 as I said in another post just threw a curve ball at me and upset me greatly. So here we are watching Tine be oblivious and Sarawat be coy while Green is just hilarious. I wish there was another episode of Fish Upon the Sky or Nitiman since those seem to be my two favorites right now. I did watch Kongpob and Arthit get together on Sotus. That is still a classic for me. What a pointless post. Watching all these shows and I still stan 1000 Stars, Sotus and My Engineer. Don’t know what it is about those 3, I just adore them.

And I am obsessed with BTS. It’s the only music I am listening to unless it’s some Thai music from BL shows. 😂

grade: 7,5/10

pros:

- I was quite surprised by the slice of life elements in this series, where you feel like you’re following the characters through their daily lives and not just the highlight reel of the most interesting moments. this reminded me of love sick but in university & I liked that aspect very much.

- I liked the communication between jin & bomb. even though they still had some miscommunication issues, I really enjoyed them being transparent about their feelings for each other & that’s extremely rare in bl shows so it needs to be applauded.

- I liked this story, it feels grounded in reality. it just feels like two random uni students falling in love & it was quite well written in that aspect.

- the acting & chemistry are pretty solid!

cons:

- way too many characters & side ships. for the characters I’m a bit divided bc it does feel realistic & goes into that slice of life aspect to have many different characters interact with the main ones, and in a way I liked that most of them weren’t that developed bc the focus was on bombjin... but then the existence of too many side ships that never get developed also feels extremely random. I would say especially the character of keam is the most disappointing since he’s built up to be a fuckboy who has feelings for jin & ball while also having a gf and his behavior is pretty weird most of the show... all of that to lead to absolutely nothing. he’s still a mystery by the end of the show, and frankly I could have done without him entirely.

- while I said I enjoyed the slice of life elements & the story, I gotta admit it’s still kinda boring? like, nothing much happens at all, and bombjin’s story could easily fit in a 1h30 movie. so for me that makes it a pretty basic bl show that’s fine but not groundbreaking in any way either. it’s much more enjoyable bingewatched than waiting one week between eps though, I can tell you as much lol

would I rewatch it: hm... I’m not sure tbh

This is your run of the mill basic, probably slightly mediocre, bl show, but I still liked it. Not my top bl recommendation, but there were still elements I liked.
