My designs for the Glamrock animatronics. I mainly based them off in game models and signs with a few obvious design tweaks such as Chica not having earrings. I couldn't figure out how make them work to be honest.
Glamrock Freddy
So for the most part I stayed pretty close to his cannon design, I twitched his color pallet, gave him a vest, and a pair of pants. I also gave him paw pads and freckles. I also adjusted his eye color as well as gave him a tail. I also made the spikes on his bracelets blue. I also gave him a splotch of red hair.
Glamrock Bonnie
For Bonnie I mostly based him off the bowling alley signs. I made his shirt brighter, gave him a couple cyan blue earrings and gloves to match his hair. I also gave him shoulder pads to match the rest of the band along with the star on his face. I also gave him some freckles. I decided to make him a light indigo that's more towards purple. His eyes are a more magenta tone like his fnaf 1 counterpart. I later gave him a ponytail
Glamrock Chica
The biggest change with Chica was her lack of earrings and her hair color. I couldn't quite figure out how to make them work with this design. I made Chica's hair and bangs pink to match an actual chicken's comb. I changed her outfit ever so slightly. I made her bottoms into a skirt and added a lighter pink star to her skirt and a lighter pink lightning bolt to her top. I made her under shirt and her shorts black. I made her gloved a little longer. I gave her a tail as well.
Glamrock Foxy
I based his design mostly off the pirate's adventures poster. I made his coat a bluish green and gave him darker red markings while making him a more reddish orange in color. Foxy is the main attendant at kid's cove, I gave him a poet shirt and a cork on his hook. I made his eye patch brown with a yellow star on it and gave him a tail along with freckles. I kept his design pretty simple.
Monty Gator
Monty's design was tweaked quite a bit here. I gave him a spiked color, fingerless gloves, a vest, and a new pair of pants. I leaned into a more punk design with Monty, I made his tail two solid colors since the stripes made him look too much like a generic lizard to me. I might add in some stripes later on. I turned his Mohawk into scutes that start at his head and go down his back and tail. I made his feet the same yellow green as his the lower parts of his legs. I gave him purple toenail polish.
Roxanne Wolf
For Roxy I made her a bluish purple gray tone, I made her hair into a ponytail and kept the green streak in her hair. I made her gave her a mostly see through under shirt and gave her actual shorts. I made her loop earrings into bar studs and leaned into her being a racer. I made her eyes more of an orangish yellow tone. I also made her a custom racing jacket and made her nail polish purple.
Sundrop
I made Sun more circus themed outfit wise. I made the gold stripes more of an orange yellow tone, I gave him ruffles on his pant legs, waist, and collar. He still has bells on his wrists and he has blue eyes from his poster in the pizzaplex. I made him into a circus lion since he gives me circus lion vibes.
Moondrop
Moon is based off a white lion for the most part. I made the stripes on his shirt silver and made his clothes mostly a midnight bluish purple while the stars, ruffles, and hat brim yellow. I gave him a little mane tuff and pawpads like Sun.
Dj Music Man
I leaned into the spider aspects of his design. I changed his top hat into a baseball cap, gave him some blue and pink face markings, eight legs, and a pair of sunglasses. I made his eyes a blue pink gradient and gave him a bandanna. His headphones are the same.
The last image is the complete design line up for the animatronics

Right so I absolutely did say I wasn’t writing for Catfish/Fender anymore and I’M NOT. but I found these in my notes and they’re relevant to my current head cannons + it amused me so, here we are lol
Van
🔪 bloody dangerous, unpredictable, wants to be the leader but isn't there yet...
🔪 Michael Gray as opposed to Tommy
🔪 Stubborn, hot headed, dramatic, don't insult him you won't live to apologise
🔪 a flirt, definitely uses his status to pull, definitely a ladies man, probably gets himself into trouble flirting with other peoples women
🔪 Needs to calm down
🔪 will throw the first thing he sees to start a fight.
🔪 known for smashing bottles to use as weapons
Bondy
🔪 Alfie Solomans kind of laidback but scary as fuck
🔪 daft, sarcastic but lowkey calculated and incredibly smart, quietly has control
🔪 protective of his family but also of anyone he deems to deserve protection. Parent energy
🔪 surprisingly loyal to his partner, but insanely possessive, does not like when other men eye her up or talk to her.
🔪 a perfect shot.
🔪 knives everywhere
Benji
🔪 quiet and calm as fuck but will go feral if he needs to
🔪 seriously do not give him a reason to fight you
🔪 isn't the leader and doesn't want to be the leader, will not go near that job.
🔪 Is doting on his girl despite the teasing and ribbing he gets off the others. Literally doesn't care if people see him as less of a man for loving his girl, if they call that into question he can make them understand his strength pretty quickly… (in this way he’s Arthur???)
🔪 in it for the money for sure, likes to buy fancy things
Bob
🔪 I'm picturing a Bonnie Gold kind of character
🔪 BABY but also tough as fuck
🔪 unbeatable in a fist fight
🔪 too quick and clever for his enemies
🔪 also he's so small and pretty that no one is expecting him to be able to take them out with a single punch
🔪 Can sense when shits about to kick off, he's got a sixth sense for that danger
Sam
🔪 John
🔪 He's like a younger Bondy, he has that seriousness about him despite his ability to laugh and play the joker when it suits.
🔪 Worries about the people he loves too much
🔪 Protective, weird fucked up but wholesome and pure moral code, hates seeing bad things happen to good people.
🔪 Will use his power/ command/ money to help people who need it. Generous. Looks after the community.
🔪 Genuinely terrifying when he's angry or threatened, if you touch someone he loves he will tear you to shreds in a heartbeat
🔪 Probably brooding over a lass he's head over heels for but won't go near because he has a complex about how dark his world is and how she's too good and too pure to be dragged into his shit.
🔪 Doesn't stop him being overly protective of her, making sure she gets home safe at night, fucking up any man who wrongs her....

Companion Head Cannons From My Pirate101 Swashbuckler Oc
Subodai is one of the closest people to Cordelia, aside from Lucky Jack Russel. The two made their way through their imprisonment, Skull Island, and met a furry companion along the way. He sees her as a future warrior in the making, and knows that one day she could have the power to do wonders for the Spiral, or catastrophic things to the Spiral. He wants to see what type of person she will become, seeing the same pride that he has, that she has hidden away deep down.
Bonnie Anne at first thought Cordelia was more of a wannabe pirate for hire. But as she spends more time with Cordelia, she earns more respect for her seeing her determination to find out more about her parents, to either find closure or something else, Bonnie has no clue what it could be. But she saw the true making of a Captain after they managed to found Gunn's gold, and how generous she was to her crew when handing it out as well.
Ratbeard didn't think much of Cordelia at first to be completely honest. She was smaller than him, and she didn't look like a true pirate at that point. Once he joined her crew, he saw what a Captain should have been, seeing the error of his ways. For some time, he would be disgusted with himself for what he had accidentally done to his previous crew, until one day Cordelia finally talked to him. After their talk that only those two would know about, he wasn't guilty per se. He just felt a strong urge to do right by his previous crew, and his current one.
Jack Russell is the one being in the Spiral that has known Cordelia the longest. He also knows her true nature, and how she is. When he saw her in the Presidio, he was elated to see that his efforts to help save her didn't go to waste. After becoming apart of her crew, he realized that she was struggling with her past traumas from her childhood, and nothing he did helped her. He honestly thought that perhaps forgetting everything about her parents as a whole, was the best thing for her when they made it to Aquila. When it happened, he noticed that the same behaviors were still there, she just didn't remember why. But there were some differences that he picked up on. Things that once made her so unique, were practically erased. Except her Rose obsession, which was still present, just much more subtle after losing her memories of her parents. He vowed to make sure she stayed safe, and to help her in anyway he could, even if it was down to the worst methods, he would do it.
Sarah Steele saw how good Cordelia was in a fight, and she knew she would have to practice with her on her fencing. Simply put, they became sparring partners.
Fan Flanders was glad to have a Captain that didn't care about her reputation in Marleybone whatsoever. With her being in the crew, she felt she had a family again, but different from the one she had to leave behind years prior. It made her feel good, and so she stuck around.
Old Scratch is ironically another being that is close to Cordelia. Ever since he joined her crew and realized she was chasing after her parents and their legacy, he wanted to help in anyway he could, for breaking him free of the darkness that once was a hold of him. So, he grew more powerful and would commune with the spirits, wanting to find out more about her parents, as well as anything he could about El Dorado. He would also put incense in her quarters as a way to prevent any dark magic sleeping in, so he claimed. In reality, it was more his of way of trying to help with her nightmares, as he heard her sobbing one night while he was communicating with the spirits. Although it's more subtle than Jack and Subodai, he does care and worry for her just the same, the spirits at times telling him things that she will one day encounter, among other things.
El Toro at first didn't trust Cordelia when they first met, outside of his hero persona. But before he even joined her crew, she helped Cool Ranch and Santo Pollo with everything she had, which he heard about as he traveled. But after she came back with Mustang Sally, he saw a different side to his new Captain. Secretly, Cordelia was a romantic, although she would never admit that. But the way she decided to help bring those two lovers together wasn't entirely out of selfishness, even if she did think their relationship was odd in itself. She later learned, that El Toro's father hadn't officially adopted him, but just took him in. Something that almost no one knew about, aside from his family. Then she fully supported their relationship from that point onward, even if she never said anything about it.
Monkey King did think that Cordelia was gullible for her age by the time he met her. She was skilled, he'd give her that. But when he was forced onto her crew, he intentionally made it a point to force Cordelia to spot lies when they were being told to her. If he was forced to be on her crew, he figured he'd make the best of it for the time being. With him helping her, she soon began spotting the tells of when someone was lying, withholding information, and exaggerating something to her face. She still played up the gullible card, til the perfect moment to catch whoever she was speaking to by surprise, which secretly made MK proud of her progress, as well as the little trickster she was slowly becoming as well.
Catbeard fully took advantage of Cordelia in starting a war between Valencia and Marleybone, there was no question about that. He knew who she was, as well as her mother the moment he saw her. He was curious, and wanted to see what potential the daughter his old friend had. He was impressed by how she managed to start the war, and turn the tides for Marleybone when they began losing against Valencia. When he joined her crew, he realized she would go above and beyond the heights her mother had, even with the challenges that were to come in the future.

Bonnie was the one who spilled the beans. He could hardly keep it in, too eager for his second child that he accidentally told Elizabeth before she was supposed to find out. It all happened the day she came home from schooling with a talk about her teacher’s son. He was a newborn and had come with her to the little schoolhouse as there was no one else to take care of him that day.
He could barely hold himself together once the word “baby” left her mouth. The way she looked, so happy as she thought back to her first time meeting a baby- at least, the first time she could actually remember it. The joy on her face didn’t help the burst of feelings in his gut.
Y/n caught on, quick, but her subtle warnings seemed to fly past Bonnie’s head. In one ear and out the other, as Polly would say. “Bon. As much as she loves her teacher’s son, we should have her get started on whatever she has to do today.” Her tone was soft but her eyes pierced into her husband.
He, of course, didn’t notice anything. Usually, it’d be impressive, but at the moment, it was one of the worst pains in her ass. Funny. She remembered her brothers and their wives acting like this in front of her, never did she think she’d act the same way but with the son of someone they worked with for the longest time.
Even if it was odd falling in love with Gold, Aberama was overjoyed to be a grandfather. He supported it more than her family, and that was one of the many things that encouraged their marriage in the first place. The Shelby brothers weren’t exactly the nicest people to their sisters’ lovers. Bonnie being the child of a business partner of theirs only made their disapproval more personal.
Despite her brothers’ little feud with Bonnie, they gave in and gave Bonnie their blessing. Whether or not it was because Elizabeth had been born, they never knew; it was better to just get on with the wedding rather than question them and risk their minds changing.
After the wedding, the two didn’t waste time on their little family.
“But mummy, I don’t have anything to do.”
“Yeah, mummy, she has nothing to do today.” Bonnie mimicked his daughter’s voice with an extra touch of drama as he directed unconvincing puppy-dog eyes at his wife. She rolled her own in response and walked past him, setting down a snack for Elizabeth beside her books on the table.
“Well, then why don’t you eat some food and read for a bit, okay, baby?” Instant regret hit her gut, eyes shooting up to meet Bonnie’s as they twinkled with excitement.
“You too, mummy, you’ve got to eat or else-”
“Bonnie.”
“C’mon, you gotta admit, I’m a little funny.”
“No, you’re really not.”
Elizabeth watched her parents bicker back and forth with confusion. She stood still for a few minutes, watching the exchange even though she had no idea what they were talking about. After a bit longer, Elizabeth grew bored. The little girl shook her head with a sigh and started for the chair in front of the spot Y/n had set for her.
As she grabbed the chair to pull it out, her father spat out what the odd squabble had been about. “I’m telling you, Y/n. Whether my jokes about your pregnancy is funny or not, I mean it all endearingly, darling. I promise.” He meant everything he told his wife, the lovesick gleam in his eye proving that day after day, but he spoke with no filter nor track of what came from his mouth.
Bonnie’s words stopped her in her tracks. She stared at her parents with a blank expression, save for the small trace of shock. Y/n swatted Bonnie lightly when his words registered. They whipped around to Elizabeth with a frantic smile. “...Surprise?”
The two held their breath in suspense. If it wasn’t obvious that she wasn’t originally supposed to find out this way, Bonnie rubbing his head while giving his wife a side-stink-eye sure made it so. Y/n and Bonnie met eyes for a split second, time feeling like slow motion, before turning back to watch for Elizabeth’s reaction.
It felt like they forgot how to breathe until-
The corners of Elizabeth’s lips lifted and a twinkle practically lit from out of nowhere, sparkling in her blue orbs. The littlest Shelby she would be no more, and she was more than okay with it.

Pirates of the Caribbean
This is an ask from @shrigma-male, but i accidentally deleted the ask.. so sorry! I am high key excited to get an ask about this topic, as the Pirates of the Caribbean ride is probably one of my earliest animatronic centric obsessions. not only is it one of the earliest and most impressive feats of Imagineering, it also remains solid to this day. it houses a great many iconic animatronic figurines, all of which work together in perfect harmony to capture beautifully life filled scenes of a cohesive storyline. Its individual ride concept was so strong that it birthed a line of clones and even a famous movie franchise. isn’t that sick? a RIDE was the key source material for a whole movie series! but it’s unsurprising, with the time and care poured into the ride. Unfortunately, or fortunately depending on how you think about it, the ride is JAM PACKED so there is a LOT to talk about. This will only be a super brief post information-wise, but who knows? There may be more to come if this performs well. Apologies, my life’s not going great at the moment and i don’t have a lot of spare time so this is not as high a quality as i would like it to be.
Tumblr media
Here’s my fast fact file on it!
Debut: March 16, 1967
Withdrawal: All rides are still operating
Attraction: The Pirates of the Caribbean
Locations: Disneyland, Magic Kingdom, Tokyo Disneyland, Disneyland Paris, Shanghai Disney (but this one’s heavily modified)
Attraction Type: Dark ride
Riders Per Vehicle: 23–24
Number of vehicles:  50
Animatronics: 119 ish but it depends on the ride version
Ride videos: The entire ride varies from version to version and different people want to see different parts. i’m leaving you guys to find your own ride videos. it’s a very popular ride, just type on in to youtube and you’ll find heaps of nice high quality ones.
The thing that stands out about this ride is the theming and the sheer amount of effort put in to creating an immersive environment. the ride houses an impressive 119 audio animatronics, 53 of which are animals. There are 630,000 gallons of water in the ride (original Disneyland) and takes three whole days to drain. there are over 40,000 gold coins in the treasure room scene alone. It holds what could possibly be considered Disney’s first themed restaurant which can be seen at the start of the ride. It is objectively one of the coolest things I’ve ever ridden. I want to call specific attention to the boat scene, where cannons fare at each other from opposite ships, creating glowing impacts and throwing water about. the first time I rode it it ensnared my attention and completely suspended my disbelief. The ride system is based on the one used in it’s a small world, due to that rides incredible success in debuting a boat-based transport system. Although I hate it’s a small world with a burning passion and refuse to write anything on it, I must be forced to admit that it did wonders as a test on how to create a good dark ride, emphasising key features such as a high rider capacity, boat-based transport system, and proving that animatronics are an incredibly attractive key event. Since the 60’s when it debuted, the Pirates of the Caribbean ride has gone through many changes throughout its location, including entire scenes being added and removed. but what it has maintained throughout its historic run time is its notoriety and splendour. the key change that I will bring up is the 2006 and 2007 renovations that include more theming from the very successful movie franchise. slightly unrelated, but the song “Yo ho, a pirate’s life for me” was actually first written for the ride. The rides are all being constantly updated in minor ways whether it’s slightly improving the animatronics, touching up background details or changing costuming. I’ll attach here a brief sort of timeline of the ride that I’ve whipped up here, but it only touches on the most notable modifications. sorry about how crap-tier it is..
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now, to talk more specifically about animatronics. The animatronics used on this ride are some of the earliest made by Disney. some are really quite basic, with their full range of motions being a singular full body action such as raising and lowering out of a barrel, but others move heads and arms in (sort of) lifelike actions. Some are newer, (specifically captain Jack Sparrow), but most are the original ones from the 60’s. One of my (and everyone’s tbh) favourites is the redheaded lady. She is (very originally) named Redd. Previously she was being sold off for auction, but in 2018 she was swapped to being an auctioneer. She has stunning red curls and a beautiful dress to match, and now holds a gun. here’s a little before and after.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
in the same refurbishment that changed her the mist screen in the tunnel before the fort battle was removed and replaced with a pirate in a cage who turns into a skeleton via an optical trick as well as an octopus playing with some medallions, along with the original 1967 narration about cursed treasure being restored. Her new version is based off none other than Anne Bonny herself (worth a google, she’s a fucking BOSS (like seriously!! Queer history icon!!! LOOK 👏 HER 👏 UP 👏 )) . She’s also displayed in dead man’s cove in a portrait, which I think is kinda neat. Her Paris version is completely silent, but the others yell about selling rum. Sadly I have never actually seen the new Redd in person, as I have only ridden the ride in Tokyo (where she is still being sold).
Tumblr media
Now, the barker bird! oh how I love him so <3 he’s a little green pirate parrot, who spent his days crying about the ride. he was originally in the queue area but got kicked outside eventually to help deal with crowd control. he was then gotten rid of in 2006 in the big movie refurb. He was remarkably similar to the original barker bird who resided outside of the Enchanted Tikki Room; however, the pirate version has a peg leg, eye patch, tattoo on his chest and wondrously villainous hat. he was originally based off of Captain Flint, the parrot from Treasure Island. It is theorised that he has a skeletal clone inside the ride; the parrot belonging to “the Dirty Feet pirate”.
Tumblr media
When you first get on the ride, the first animatronic you come across is Old Joe. he is an animatronic character used in multiple different attractions, including Liberty Belle Riverboat, The Western River and Mark Twain Riverboat. in each version, he lives in a shack and is associated with the banjo. I say associated because it is actually a really common misconception that he actually plays the banjo. he does not, it is just a dark scene and there is banjo music playing around him. you can see the tip of his pipe glowing as you approach it in the ride, lit up alongside the fireflies. he is a small taste of what is to come.
Tumblr media
Barbossa replaced the original pirate captain of The Wicked Wench in the boat battle scene in the mass movie renovation. he is my tied favourite with the redhead, as his dialog adds so much to the scene. his character moves in a beautiful fashion, lit up by a spotlight. His face is artfully painted, capturing what I believe to be the most human expression in the entire ride. His boat is fighting a Castillo del Morro fortress of Isla Tesoro, whilst busy searching for treasure and presumably captain jack sparrow. in 2011 his WDW version’s outfit was swapped over to his privateer uniform from On Stranger Tides, to keep the ride tied to the movies. What can be considered quite odd is that in Paris’s later renovation, the Captain did not replace the Wicked Wench captain, and was rather added in to a scene at the end of the ride, in the skeleton grotto. he is standing on the shipwreck beside the skeleton helmsman, carrying a lantern.
Tumblr media
The auctioneer. I don’t like him. greasy man. his eyes are wild. He’s originally voiced by Paul Frees (an icon, a legend) and is inspired by Captain Bartholomew Roberts (considered the most successful pirate in the golden age of piracy. He is also a pirate from the ship The Wicked Wench, and his auction is set up near a canteen called "La Cantina”. very creative. He was originally selling brides (human trafficking, not very snazzy) but now he sells chickens he stole from townspeople. however, this is unsuccessful. In the Paris version, instead of the chickens he is trying to sell a painting of Jean Laffite. Funnily enough, Jean is one of Disney’s sort of “stand in” pirate characters that they frequently just use whenever they need a pirate to slide in. Unfortunately, the auctioneer is always kept relatively up to date with the shiniest, newest technology that Disney can spare, and is always one of the most advanced figures on the ride. doesn’t deserve it, he’s slimy and I don’t like him. I should probably mention that he doesn’t actually have a name other than the auctioneer. There’s also a clone of him used in the haunted mansion for the duelling animatronics. loser.
Tumblr media
This is a very long post, so I shall cut it here. I will leave you with an image gallery, further reading and a possible promise of a part two if this post does well. Thank you!
(ok so i actually haven’t got any further reading gathered yet. give me like 6 hours and ill fix it in an edit. i promise. i just want to get this post out asap)

Resonant || Klaroline
Inspired by the world of Onward, where technology edged magic out of daily existence because all creatures learned to adapt to a new life. Caroline might have taken the DNA test, but she doesn’t take her magical origins nearly as seriously as some people. Klaus, however, takes his birthright and the power it lends very, very seriously - but why would he kidnap an elf?
.
"I don't know what you want from me," Caroline snarled, her wrists raw from fighting her bonds. "But I do know this is not the way to go about it." The chair was cold through the thin silk of her dress, an excellent dress her date so didn't deserve. "Seriously, let me go, Nik. This isn't funny."
He pulled another chair from the edge of the cell where she awoke, tied up and confused. Twirling it before her, he straddled the seat to rest his arms on the back as he watched her with a gleeful smile. "Perhaps, now is the time to tell you my name isn't Nik. Not technically."
The laugh she let out was harsh. "Surprise, the guy who drugged me during dinner isn't who he said he was. I don't give a fuck, let me go."
"No, I think I'll keep you," he answered, amusement all too clear in his voice. "That is, unless you can free yourself. Then, I'm willing to negotiate terms."
She gave another jerk against her ties, but the metal cord obviously held. "How the hell am I supposed to do that?"
Smirking, Not Technically Nik traced his bottom lip with his thumb. "I trust you'll figure it out. Until then, let me introduce myself. Niklaus Mikaelson, at your service."
"Really crappy service," she spat, only quailing when her brain caught up with the bomb he just dropped. Horror dawned on her slowly as she saw him watching her with great interest. Not only had she been kidnapped - she'd been kidnapped by the Original Hybrid out to set a new world order.
Magic had always been an accepted part of the world. Gnomes, elves, wizards, and so much more, everyone had their origins and lived as they chose. Specialized knowledge was shared through the generations, lovingly passed down to children and nurtured the necessary skills as they grew. Little ones were taught all the lore for such a world of wonder.
And then, the advancement of technology caught up. Wings were traded for sensible, mid-size sedans, and sorcery gave way to invention. The world became connected in a way it never was before, and all creatures adapted to new common goals until magic eased itself out of existence. Lore was still taught, mostly, though some stories had been forgotten, lost to time as populations mingled. The knowledge was generalized, until schools only taught the big points, nuance and details only so important as they appeared on standardized tests.
So, magic existed - at one point. The last vestiges only remained among those who trained in the skills their ancestors once held as a sacred practice. All creatures could be dangerous if they chose to be, and most people had a wide range of lineages to choose from in their quest for some ancient power. Bonnie had bought Caroline one of those DNA tests the year before; she presented and lived as an elf her whole life, it was kind of a kick to learn she was three percent centaur. "Maybe that's why I had a horse phase growing up," she had joked.
But Klaus Mikaelson was staring at her with greed, and she didn't think it had to do with a penchant for pony tails and killer legs.
The news was always talking about the underground revolution inspired by the Original Hybrid. Rumor had it he was cursed by a witch, his werewolf genes bound and useless. He was left to fend for himself when a rogue vampire attacked him. They were drawn to the healing arts, their need for fresh blood often a handy currency for those with terrible or no insurance. But when they were hungry, it could get ugly. For Klaus, though, the turn was particularly traumatic. Finding the witch who cursed him, he killed her to release his werewolf side, which allowed him to become something entirely new and untested in the world.
That last half was confirmed, Klaus himself having spread the story far and wide as his many surrogates tried to recruit new blood to his cause - to return to the natural state of magic until the world respected all species for the danger they posed. Caroline thought it was a resistance-flavored attempt at elitist elimination of diverse families, and she usually turned the TV off whenever some outlet dared to grant the monster some legitimacy and a chance to reach new ears. If she'd waited a bit longer, she might have recognized his face when he showed up on her dating app.
She'd been so excited for this date. He was charming and funny, a little acerbic, but she liked that mixed into her banter. He seemed like the perfect guy for her, passionate about his art. If only she'd known he was passionate about magical dominion over the entire world, then she might have tempered her expectations.
As he watched her every expression, though, she wondered why he went to such trouble. There was no need to sit through an entire dinner with her, to flirt with her and make her feel seen. It had been going really well, yet he had to have slipped her something for her to wake up in an actual dungeon. Who had a dungeon?
Biting her lip, there were too many other things that didn't make sense. From what she had gleaned over the years his little movement had been actively acknowledged, Klaus went after powerful species. Giants, trolls, wizards he could win over to his way of thinking. She was an elf, with some siren, nymph, and a negligible bit of centaur in her line.
"What the fuck do you want with me?"
His head tilted to the side, that insufferable smirk only widening the longer it took him to answer. Her irritation grew until she tried to shake the metal ties again, and he narrowed his eyes with something like pity. "You truly don't know, do you?"
Caroline didn't want to give him the satisfaction of asking, but it wasn't like she was getting out of this nonsense by herself. "I know you're nuts and I'm filing a restraining order once I get out of here."
"Have you never wondered what magic might be bubbling under your skin," he question softly, his eyes lingering over the red welts on her wrists, "just begging to be released?"
"I took a DNA test," she bit back with a sharp grin, "turns out I'm a hundred percent that bitch who wants nothing to do with you or your little power trip. You don't want me, and I sure as hell don't want you."
Klaus propped his chin on his hand, chuckling. "I thought dinner was going pretty well, actually."
"You made a good impression," she admitted. "I'm a fast learner, though. Besides, don't you recruit big strong fighters to serve as cannon fodder for your worst ideas?"
With a casual shrug, he seemed annoying unperturbed by her accusations. "We all have our strengths. I'm most interested in discovering yours, however." His voice lowered, almost seductive as he leaned toward her. "Escape your bindings, sweetheart. I know you can."
She refused to ask how, not that she particularly wanted to pass his twisted test. But, she did want to escape. "I've never shown an aptitude for magic, ever. My best friend is a witch, and she would have noticed."
"No one noticed." He was watching her steadily, pleased she appeared to play along. "I wouldn't have if I hadn't gotten ahold of your results from the ancestry testing database."
"Stalker!"
His lips curled upward. "Not just yours, mind, I have a talented mole on staff there to keep me abreast of any...abnormalities in gene reports."
Blinking, Caroline tried to remember what that stupid app had told her. "Th-there was an eight percent unknown strain," she recalled. "But that's normal. 'Within the accepted range for interpretation,' is what I think it said. Too many species and generations to clearly delineate."
"I don't care for percentages," Klaus said. "Percentages mean nothing. It's about what resonates throughout your very being, whether it be the lion's share or a single thread. According to your genetic code, you have a very, very rare thread that I think resonates within you. And I think you can call it forth to escape those bindings."
Her heart was pounding. "What are you talking about?"
He stood, moving toward her to gently lift the pendant from the hollow of her neck. "This is very pretty, just like you," he flirted. "Have you never wondered why you favor gold jewelry?"
"It suits my coloring. What does my personal style have to do with anything?"
"Or why you can't help but soak in the sun at every chance you get? Your profile pictures are all outside, often lounging next to a pool."
"Hi, it's an excuse to post a bikini pic!"
Klaus smiled knowingly. "You tend to latch onto your friends, loathe to share them with others. Bonnie, was it? The friend who called halfway through our dinner? You're awfully possessive of her, aren't you?"
Anger welled within her, a boiling rage she'd never quite felt before and had no idea what to do with.
Of course, he just kept smiling. "It'd be a shame if something were to happen to this Bonnie, should you not be able to escape."
Her hands balled into tight fists and her breathing grew heavy. "Don't threaten my friends."
"Your friends," he asked, taking a tighter hold of her necklace as his fangs finally slid out to show just how dangerous he was, "or your hoard?" Then, he ripped her necklace off.
And all hell broke loose.

Warnings for blood mention, mechanical body horror, gore mention, torture mention, 'glitchy' unrealistic stuttering, calling a violent person 'unstable' (he is not mentally ill, but his crew thinks he is dangerous and unhinged, and he doesn't try to quell these rumors), slightly unreliable narrator?, He's just going through A Lot and coping via torture though it is not graphic here, this is really the beginning of his recovery, to be honest.
Alexander really did not think he would be embarking on a project where he fully considered the sentience and inherent 'humanity' in an Armada soldier, but, well, everything in his life had always been strange.
He finally solved the Khurgas' problem, as unconventional as it was, and continued forward as the tiger commander gave him a final order to turn the tide of battle on the Marleybonian Isle Of Fetch. With his orders, he and his crew advanced towards the beacon glowing from a beached Armada ship.
The new form of Armada units they found was strange- bulky, massive. Taller than any of their crew, easily two people's width as well. They were tougher than any flimsy hunk of metal carrying a musket or halberd the crew had destroyed before.
They hit hard, and that in itself was worrying. Currently alongside him were Bonnie Anne, Sarah Steele, and Gracie Conrad, a new crewmate he actually befriended, an unusual occurance these days when he took on a new person.
So when Sarah fell unconscious at a rough hit to the head from one of the Armada soldiers' weapons, Alexander's heart sank, but he knew it would happen. Currently everyone in his lineup was rather dainty, and he himself was a bit of a glass cannon, even the higher-ups sitting on their asses in the war room could recognize that.
So when the final battle neared, he called Ratbeard up to assist. The man was more solidly built than the rest, and he or Subodai were good picks as a fellow front line fighter while Bonnie Anne sat back to observe the field and Gracie spent the first vital moments constructing traps.
It was almost hilariously easy at first, on the ship. Gracie quickly whispered instructions, to half turn the crank, then destroy the generators, causing a power surge to blast the whole operations to pieces. Alexander cloaked the entire party in shadows, and half turned the mechanism himself.
The Armada soldiers, confused, still following battle protocols, began to destroy the only active thing on the battlefield: the generators.
Alexander was tempted to laugh, but managed to hold off until they began their ambush. He taunted the lifeless machines, mocking them with a leer as he cut them down one by one, relishing in the sound of twisted, screeching metal and the hot pour of slick oil that stained the hands and face and gave his blades a ghoulish tint.
And he would have done the same if they were people. And that alone caused Gracie and Bonnie Anne to look at him questioningly.
The beacon exploded, causing Ratbeard to cheer, hollering into the night, and Gracie appeared satisfied, but her tail wagged slowly and head cocked in thought.
"Captain, could I check for more devices in the ship's interior?" She asked.
Alexander nodded, breathing hard, blood singing still, head pounding. He kicked open the doors into the lower decks, while Gracie checked the captain's cabin.
Alexander didn't know what to look for, mind distant and scanning the room, prepared for it to turn battlefield any second, but he certainly did not expect the brig to have an occupant.
It was a barred room, one of the same make as the one Alexander spent a stint of time in whilst seventeen, about to start this twisted adventure. Inside, however, was no punk kid nor warrior of Mooshu, as was last time.
Alexander was entranced by what he saw, a strange echo of his actions above deck. The clockwork lying inside was large, the same frame as the largest model the crew had newly encountered. That was where the similarities stopped. The clockwork had no weapon, and was sparking and whirring weakly, fingers twitching as it lay limp, thrown against the back wall.
What was there to do but venture inside?
The closer he got after unlocking the cell, the more the entire situation grew unnerving. The clockwork soldier's head was bowed, hat hung low and obscuring. All armor or clothes were gone, leaving only bronze, black, and white planes of machinery, and glimpses of wires that sparked, cut. Several dents and gashes decorated the main torso plate, one arm hanging by a hinge.
When Alexander brushed the hat to the side, his breath hitched.
Surprises were not as common these days. He was a twenty-three year old man, he had been betrayed, played a fool and a puppet, stabbed in the back, and watched some of the most grotesque torture. He had inflicted some of that, eager, panting and sniffing out blood and weaknesses like a sommelier sniffed out fine wines from the way it swished against the glass, legs of the fluid sliding up smoothly, the fragrant booze plunging the senses into something smokey, smelling the barrel it was aged in, picking up hints of wood and fruits and lush flowers. All to drink it, let the intoxicating liquid slide and seep into their tastebuds, sink into their teeth, and swallow it. Much like Alexander would watch blood trail from a wound, the fear induced sweat on the skin making the passage of the fluid all the more simple, sharp iron in the air, the scent stained into their clothes.
He had seen some gruesome scenes. Nothing prepared him for seeing the dark void of chaos beneath a clockwork's mask.
The sharp intake of breath burned when he held it, eyes flitting rapidly to take it in.
Shattered porcelain remnants of its mask remained at the sides near where ones ears would go, but aside from those jagged pieces it was a whole different story. Bronze metal parts, strange and small and intricate, all clicking weakly along. The teeth- exposed now, sculpted and perfectly straight. They looked real and a chill dripped down Alexander's spine like someone cracked an egg at his neck.
The eyes. The eyes. The eyes.
Oh, the eyes.
Alexander was captivated, staring, staring and falling deep into an onyx void with a spark of true intelligence. Machinery sputtered for a moment, before the clockworks head turned just a smidge, mouth now agape, letting words spill.
"I-I-I-I-I." The machine glitched and stuttered, hand twitching once, the wrist twisting. "B-B-B-B-Bir-r-r-r."
Alexander found himself soft, quiet, until he cooed like one would at a baby, a soft "oh-hhh.", One that means nothing but to reassure. "Take you're time." He whispered.
"Ow-Ow-Oww-w-w-l-l." The thing stopped, whirred quickly, and spoke again. "Owl. N-N-" with a soft scrape a new part of its mangled face shifted, a bolt falling loose. "Owl."
Definitely not expected.
For a brief, hysterical moment, he wondered if he was wasted, having a bad drunken dream.
And it struck some kind of cord. Alexander wanted to know why. Why was this beaten to shit clockwork in an Armada brig.
But the machine slumped, stuttering about owls.
So he made the completely rational decision of dragging it out and yelling up to his crew for assistance.
And that in itself was shocking enough to send Bonnie Anne running in a flat sprint, crashing into walls as she went. Alexander never asked for help unless he was about to die or it truly was an impossible task to do alone. She hoped for the latter.
Alexander watched Bonnie Anne rush in, sniper on her shoulder ready to aim for the head. When all she saw was a busted clockwork, she let her weapon fall to her side and scoffed.
"Can't take it to our ship alone." Alexander explained, tone expectant.
"We could find scrap metal much closer to the ship if we really need it, captain."
"No. This isn't that- look at it, Bonnie. It was locked up. Why would the Armada do this to one of their own?"
"I don't know, captain, and frankly, don't know why I should care. It isn't alive."
"Well then, I guess I'll drag this to the ship on my own and get us all caught by any of the Armada between me and the dock." Alexander drawled now, a tone that promised he would follow through.
"Fine." Bonnie Anne barked out, jaws snapping.
With her and Ratbeard's help, they got it on board rather easily, Gracie running off to inform the tigers of their victory.
"To the brig with this hunk of junk, captain?" Ratbeard asked.
Alexander gazed over the war torn Isle Of Fetch, before looking back at the clockwork. "Bring it to my cabin. Tell Gracie she can check in if she's interested, but I'd rather this was my project."
Every crewmate exchanged confused glances, but with their captain turning from eccentric and frivolous into a dangerous, unstable man, they knew not to question a simple request that would hurt no one. Bonnie Anne did roll her eyes though, unable to resist.
And so Alexander found something new to fixate on, finally something that made the echoing, forlorn voices of his parents silent. Something that wasn't blood, or the way a betrayer screams for mercy, and not the crack of bone or crunch of cartilage.
Something quiet.
Gracie stayed in his room as well, silent as a grave, handing him tools and bits and bobs to fix up the broken toy soldier. Bonnie Anne led the crew in his absence, not for the first time.
He spent days intricately carving a plate of ivory, giving it the suggestion of a nose reminiscent of the Armada's plain porcelain masks. He inlayed gold in the outside, blushed it with more gold between the eye sockets and atop that nose. It was delicate, at odds with the sturdy body, the body itself a slightly uneven, less efficient thing, but it seemed proper, given the stutters about birds.
The mask looked like an Owl. It fit perfectly in every sense Alexander’s feverishly working mind could conjure. He worked on the internals last, of course, always one to prioritize the aesthetic over what lies underneath.
That was the sticking point, it seemed. He and Gracie would need more intel on either war golem construction, or the Armada’s own blueprints to figure out how to connect the pieces and give that spark of life Alexander had witnessed, to bring it back to the husk of metal and ensure it would still be rambling about owls, and not simply bash Alexander’s head in with the nearest wrench.
So Alexander left his work table as it was and allowed Bonnie Anne to drag him back into their mission, where they had to help a different branch of the Marleybonian bootlickers to ensure Alexander could finally be given the title of captain, which in itself was only to get proper access to Catbeard in order to get the imprisoned captain’s shred of the map
Plans within plans, however. Alexander let Bonnie Anne remember the big picture, and he let himself be busied by the immediate task, as well as secretly contemplating the mechanisms and delicate machinery that made up what might be a person, might be more than faulty programming.
He didn’t know what conclusion this would come to, but for the first time since hearing an echo of his lost parents’ voices, it was more than just El Dorado.
It was the strange clockwork soldier, as well.

You Can't Shake The Devil Tree And Expect An Angel To Fall Out
Remember this post? Yeah, I needed it so much I wrote it.
Read it on AO3 H E R E
After a week aboard the Walrus, late at night, during a game of cards, Logan calls John Silver a bastard. It’s meant with affection, the teasing smile already plastered on his face before he opens his mouth, but John flinches nonetheless, draws back from the word as though he expects it to hit him.
No one on the Walrus thinks much of it. Every man aboard had one reason or another to have turned his back on civilisation. Apparently, they had tripped over Silver’s, and as far as they were concerned, that was that - John Silver told society to fuck off with emphatic cannon fire and larceny because he was, factually, a bastard. A simple explanation for a far more complex man.
John Silver is deeper than the sea, more vengeful than a ghost, more tangled than a gordian knot, and none of them know it yet.
***
He’s tiny, is the boy in the door to Thomas and his brothers’ schoolroom, like an imp or a fae from the Irish fables the kitchen maid is all too happy to tell Thomas while she peels potatoes and pushes her red hair back from her freckled face. He’s got curly dark hair that falls long into his face in such a manner that blocks it from view, a style that Thomas knows his father would never allow, but his eyes - the eyes that peek through those curls, alarmed and disbelieving - those eyes are the most familiar thing Thomas knows. He sees them in the mirror every morning, after all.
“This is John,” says the nursemaid, “and he is to be your brother from now on. Your father the Earl has agreed to take him in as his ward, to give him his name and his care.”
Thomas reaches out for the tiny boy without thinking.
John returns the embrace remarkably eagerly, clutching at the back of Thomas’ shirt with small, chubby hands.
He wouldn’t let go for many, many years to come.
***
John Silver steals and lies and cheats and does it all with a roguish wink and a smile so charming it could melt the collar off a priest, and James Flint is going to kill him with his own two hands as soon as that gold is safely stowed, those fucking blue eyes be damned.
No, that is a lie.
John Silver lies and steals and manipulates and does it all with a roguish wink and a smile that could melt the collar off a priest and tempt a Saint down the wrong kind of path, and James Flint is fucking screwed because John Silver has eyes that are just the same shade of blue as Thomas Hamilton’s had been, and James has always been powerless against eyes like that.
John Silver, at least, doesn’t have unsupportable ideas about bringing law back to Nassau, and James will always be grateful for small mercies. What John Silver does have, however, is a fucking death wish.
Between attempting to sell the schedule to Vane and then memorizing it to deliberately fuck up everything James had planned for the next six weeks and then somehow getting involved with a plot that included both Anne Bonny and Eleanor Guthrie,  James is certain that Silver’s ultimate goal is tricking his way into an early grave.
An early grave that will in fact be well-funded, because he’d looked up at James and said ‘we might be friends by then’ and James had seen those eyes and heard ‘are you the liaison sent by the admiralty?’ and found himself agreeing to something he’d never wanted, but seemed to have ended up wishing for anyway.
And so here they are, James with a musket ball in his shoulder and John with a botefeux that’s still lit and a cannon that’s still smoking and both of them with a mutiny playing out in front of them, and the only thing that is still clear and unhazy in James’ sight are those eyes - John Silver’s bluer than blue eyes that are so familiar and so unknown all at once.
When he goes under the water, he sees Thomas smiling and reaching out to him, and then suddenly he’s become Silver, a transformation that seems to happen around the eyes without them ever changing. He’s dying and he knows it and all he can see is those eyes, and if you asked him he couldn’t tell you which of them the eyes belonged to, because the crinkle at the corners and the adoration are the same. The world goes dark in a gradient that starts with blue, and James can feel the weight on his chest and welcomes it for the peace it offers.
He wakes with the taste of salt on his tongue and the sky expansive above him, just the same shade of blue as those fucking eyes.
***
Thomas Hamilton at twenty, if you asked John Silver, is not all that different from Thomas Hamilton at ten, in that he is touch-starved, impulsive, idealistic, and reckless in the way that is going to get him killed one day, although that last has progressed from “due to his own stubbornness” to “likely at their father’s behest”.
Thomas is sitting on the stone steps of College Dorm with his coat pulled tight around his torso when John sneaks out somewhere between the bell chimes for one and two in the morning, a shit-eating grin on his face.
“Aren’t you supposed to be in Oxford?” says John, because it is the first of many things he wants to know.
“I suppose I am, yes.” says Thomas, and he stretches his hands out to pull John towards him. John dances back, out of his reach.
“Father is going to be so angry with you.” he hisses.
“Yes.” says Thomas, looking inordinately pleased with the idea. “He will be.”
“Why the fuck do you seem happy about that?”
If Thomas is surprised by John’s newly-enlarged vulgar vocabulary, he doesn’t show it.
“Because if he’s angry about me running out to you, then he won’t ask about why I actually ran out.” Thomas answers, as though this makes perfect sense. To a then fifteen year old John, it made about as much sense as the old greek poetry Thomas loved, written in a language John had yet to be taught.
“What the fuck are you talking about?”
“I - well, you see -” says Thomas, and it is in fact the first time that John has ever heard Thomas lost for words.
“No, I don’t see.” says John, who has been a little shit ever since Thomas introduced him to the concept and practise of sarcasm at eleven.
“I left in order that I have a good explanation for why I can’t have been where the Earl of Kent’s son and heir is about to claim I was.”
“And why would you need that? Thomas, please tell me you didn’t punch the son and heir of the Earl of Kent. There are too many people here who like Henry.”
“I - definitely did not punch him.” says Thomas and he sounds - smug?
“What did you do?” asks John, suddenly nervous about the answer.
“I - well - I -” Thomas begins, and then he stops, and swallows. “I fucked him.”
John sits down, right where he’d been formerly standing.
“Oh.” he says.
“John?” says Thomas, and now he sounds nervous.
“I - well -” says John, trying to put the thoughts rushing through his head into a coherent sentence.
“Johnny -” says Thomas again, and now it sounds like he’s pleading, and John pushes up and over his knees so that he can wrap his hands around Thomas’ waist.
“I didn’t know you were like me.” says John, tightening his grip.
Thomas clutches at John’s shirt, this time, and they stay like that until the bells ring four and John’s hair is wet where Thomas has been crying into it, and rather than part, John sneaks Thomas back into his bedroom and they wrap themselves around each other under John’s veritable mountain of blankets, with their foreheads pressed together until the House Master in charge of the boys finds them in the morning. They have a leisurely breakfast before John’s morning classes, mostly because John’s House Master is Thomas’ former House Master, and he remembers Thomas as an intelligent and endearing young man.
“A pleasure to have in class.” teases John, before dodging to the other side of the table to prevent Thomas from ruffling his hair beyond all semblance of order.
“I’ll write to you, darling brother!” Thomas calls as he departs, at last, his voice echoing against the stone, and John hides his grin with his hair and balls his fists until his knuckles turn white so that he doesn’t call back to beg Thomas to recount every detail of his conquests in those letters.
“So nice of him to visit you.” says John’s House Master. “He is a stalwart example of the best that Eton can produce. Now, off with you, Hamilton, noun declensions wait for no man.”
***
James and Silver are going to steal a warship, and they are not going to die in the process. Maybe if James says this to himself enough times, he might believe it.
James and Silver are going to steal a warship, and - and Silver is going to get them both killed for a fucking tin whistle.
James kills a man in his hammock and pulls Silver outside by the collar of his shirt, leaving rust-colored smudges on the linen with his bloodstained hands, and Silver tells him exactly what he’s stolen and why he’s stolen it, and he’s looking at James with those damnable blue eyes while being damnable clever and it’s too close to another day, in a room lined with bookshelves and art that still smelled like oils, rain on the windowpane and James the one against the wall while Thomas pressed close and purred his filthy plans into James’ ears. James lets go of the linen and presses his lips together until they hurt and moves on with the plan. Silver blows the whistle and raises the signal flag and James kills another man, adds another layer of blood to his hands, and then he’s surrounded.
James and Silver are going to not die, and maybe steal a warship in the process.
James and Silver are not going to die.
Silver is a backstabbing, thieving bastard, and James is, in fact, going to die.
Silver is a man of hidden depths and loyalty, and is simultaneously the smartest and the least intelligent man that James has ever had the misfortune of working with.
“Well, what the fuck did you think was going to happen?” James yells, and Silver shoots. The rest of the day passes in a blur of things that James has to plan for, and then they are alive and will stay that way thanks to two votes, and Silver is looking at James while James looks out at the sea, and Silver sees through every veil James has hung between himself and the world, and he looks up at James through his lashes.
“I think you need me to do it.” he says. “Tell me I’m wrong.”
“Strange pairs, Lieutenant.” James hears. “They can accomplish the most extraordinary things.”
***
At three-and-twenty, pockets lined with scammed coin, John Hamilton, known to the aristocracy as That Seductive Bastard, puts his feet up on the empty chair residing opposite his to prevent yet another young noble looking for an exciting piece of rough to lord it over for a night from taking it.
“I’m waiting for someone.” he says, firmly.
“I can guarantee he’s not anywhere as good as me.” says the lordling, and John rolls his eyes so hard they might roll right out of his head.
“That’s a far cry from what you said while I was studying here.”
The lordling spins with a look of horror on his face and John tips his head back and starts to laugh.
“Dear Christ, Johnny, don’t do that.” says Lord Thomas Hamilton, known to the aristocracy as The Madman of Whitehall. “I’ll be beating them off with a stick all night, and that will be quite the disruption to our conversation.”
“I don’t know.” says John, contemplative. “It would be a lovely view. And I’ve always had a soft spot for you playing the White Knight for your little brother.”
Thomas grins and opens his arms, and John walks right into them. John never hit the growth spurt Thomas did, and so his face ends up pressed against Thomas’ chest, but it’s such a pleasant feeling that he can’t bring himself to care.
“I have so much to tell you!” Thomas says.
“Whose son have you despoiled this week?” asks John, returning to his seat. Thomas flings himself down in the other with the greatest possible flair.
“His father was a carpenter in the Navy.” says Thomas.
“You’re fucking your liaison.” John says, voice flat.
“Yes, I’m fucking the liaison.” says Thomas.
“It’s about fucking time!” says John, slapping his hand on the table for emphasis. “If I had to hear you compare his freckles to constellations or his hair to fire or silk threads one more time I was going to take a pleasant stroll on the bed of the fucking Thames.”
Thomas goes a very pretty shade of pink.
“Was I as obvious as all that?” he asks, and John laughs and pushes the drink he’d bought for Thomas towards him.
“Yes, brother mine.” says John. “Am I to assume that this means you are renouncing all others?”
Thomas shoots him a glare.
“Oh.” says John, suddenly taken aback. “Oh, you are genuinely serious about this. You - you love him?”
Thomas goes even pinker.
“You did something gloriously dramatic, didn’t you.” says John.
Thomas tells him about the book and the meaning of it and the inscription, and John lets his forehead fall to the sticky wood of the table.
“My truest love - you romantic shit.” he tells Thomas, and Thomas reddens more.  “You utterly absurd romantic shit.”
“It is the truth!” says Thomas, and John beams as he shakes his head in disbelief.
“I am so very happy for you, brother mine.” says John, and Thomas smiles.
Thomas is incandescent when he’s happy, and John has never seen him this bright.
“He’s - he’s something else, Johnny.” says Thomas. “I can’t wait for you to meet him.”
Now, that’s new. Thomas has never wanted to introduce any of his flings to John - he never wanted anyone to know the truth about John’s parentage, to challenge the accepted truth that John was a Hamilton ward. It was a dangerous secret to know, Alfred Hamilton’s indiscretion.
“You want me to meet him- you just told me sailed for the Bahamas, Thomas.”
“When he returns, little brother. I would like to have you for dinner, so that you might meet him.”
John finds himself smiling to match Thomas.
“Alright, then. I would like to meet your James.”
“My James.” says Thomas, his eyes wide with wonder. “Isn’t it just marvellous?”
***
The liars of yore who earned the epithet of Silvertongue must all be gathering in spirit to confer their collective titles onto John Silver, who stands in the middle of a room of men who shouldn’t give a single, solitary fuck about what James wants and makes them want it more than they want air in their lungs or food in their bellies or a beat in their hearts. John Silver makes the promise of free land under your boots and a back unbowed sound like the promise of a return to Eden, and the men eat from his hand as he does it.
James Flint knows the danger of men with power - he has been their victim and their pawn - and he is more afraid of the power in Silver’s tongue than he ever was of Alfred Hamilton and his ilk.
John Silver weaves webs out of words and traps you in them in such a way that trying to unravel them only leaves you more tangled. James listens to Miranda and then argues with Miranda, and then declares he never should have listened to Miranda, and then listens to Miranda, and Abigail Ashe looks horrified when he enters the tavern, right up until he puts down his sword and introduces himself. Until he says his name is McGraw. They sail to Charlestown with Abigail and she spends her days writing while Miranda reads, and the journey is uneventful, save for the fraying of the mainmast footrope and the rigger they lose to the afterlife and the sea as a result. Silver seems somewhat distracted by the man’s death, but James has bigger concerns than the contentment of his liar, and so he thinks nothing of it.
With a day to go before they arrive in Charlestown, he joins Miranda on her evening turn about the deck.
“I think you should go alone to see Peter.” he says. “I am worried that even with Abigail’s safe return, I will be hung for what I have done as Flint, regardless of who I once was.”
“Don’t be ridiculous.” says Miranda. “Peter will recognize us. We are not that far removed from who we once were.”
“I fear that I am.” says James.
“Peter always liked you.” says Miranda, resting a placating hand on James’ arm.
“Peter always liked Thomas.” says James, perhaps more sharply than he needs to.
“And we will be doing this in Thomas’ name.” says Miranda.
“Thomas would not want me to risk your life.” says James.
“We have something to fight for.” says Miranda.
“Believe me, I know that.” James snaps.
“And you are a good man, fighting for a good cause.” says Miranda.
“I am rather afraid you seem to have confused me with your husband!” yells James. “And I am not your husband!”
Someone behind them gasps, and James realizes that their conversation has been held at a louder volume than he had first thought.
“I know you’re not my husband,” yells Miranda, who seems not to have noticed the gasp, “because my husband is dead and you are not.”
It hurts - that comment hurts just the same as it would had Miranda cut James open with a sword like Singleton once had.
“And who’s fault is that?” James roars back, darkness and guilt and long repressed anger guiding his tongue. “Who said we had to leave him behind?”
“We would have died!” yells Miranda.
“And Peter might still kill me - kill you - kill us both!” James yells.
“Miranda?”
Both James and Miranda fall silent, turning to look at the speaker. Not a man on this ship knows Miranda’s first name - she has only ever been Mrs Barlow - and yet there, at the railing, clutching the ropes with a white-knuckled grip, stands John Silver, looking like he’s seen a ghost.
“Miranda?” he asks again.
James is across the deck and in Silver’s face before he’s aware what his feet are doing.
“How the fuck do you know her name?” he demands.
Silver reaches out, rests a hand on James’ shoulder, moving slow all the while like he’s trapped in molasses.
“James.” he breathes. The whole ship is silent, watching them. “You are his James.”
There’s a wonder in Silver’s face that James has never seen before.
“His James.” says Silver again, voice faint, eyes unfocused, like he’s in some kind of trance. The hand on James’ shoulder moves to cup his face.
Silver’s eyes are as unreadable and dark as the sea. Thomas’ used to look like that on the days when lightning arced over London.
And just like that, James understands.
***
John only ever used the servants’ entrance to the King Street house, entirely from force of habit. The night that he was to meet Thomas’ James was no different. The city was grey and wet from the persistent drizzle that had been coming and going all day, and John was done up in the best finery he had brought to Oxford with him, rumpled but still presentable after the long journey. Brighid the kitchen maid met him with a delighted squeal and a tight hug.
“Master John!” she cries. “Master John, it is so good to see you!”
“You’ve lost weight.” says Martha the cook, who used to slip John extra cookies in the afternoons. “What are they feeding you at that university?”
The servants know. The servants have always known. They know that John is more than a ward, that his mother’s name was Da Silva and his father wasn’t a dead sailor but alive and, on occasion, under the same roof as them. The servants know John is one of theirs.
“They feed me well, Martha.” says John, smiling, “but not as well as you. Thomas says you have something special for us tonight?”
“Of course!” says Martha. “The Lieutenant’s home today, isn’t he?”
“You like him, then - Thomas’ James?”
Brighid giggles.
“He’s very handsome.” she tells John, and then she leans in conspiratorially. “And he’s very - obedient.”
John sniggers too, at that, and then yelps when Martha whacks the back of his hand with the wooden spoon she’d been carrying.
“No gossiping in this kitchen.” she says, voice stern.
“Come on, Martha, you must have an opinion on tha man.” John cajoles.
“Well,” says Martha, leaning in, eyes dancing, “I overheard -”
The doors at the back of the kitchen bang open with some force, and two men John vaguely recognizes as being in his father’s employ march into the kitchen, dragging someone with them.
Someone tall, and blond.
“THOMAS!” yells John, scrambling over the table to get between the men holding his brother and the door. Brighid screams, and Martha gasps out something that might be ‘Lady Hamilton’ and runs for the other door.
“THOMAS!” John yells again, and throws himself at the man holding Thomas’ right arm.
“John, no -” gasps Thomas, and John gets a first look at the bloody lip and swelling eye already present on his brother.
Which, naturally, is when the third man punches John in the back of the head.
He hits the floor hard, and tries to get his hands and knees under himself so that he can stand up, only for a booted foot to catch him in the ribs.
“JOHN!”
The next three kicks are also aimed at his ribs, and then someone stomps down on his hand, and he cries out in pain.
“LEAVE HIM ALONE!” yells Thomas, slightly fainter, this time.
John drags his head up enough to see the men carrying Thomas kick open the back door.
“JOHNNY!” yells Thomas, fighting wildly against the men holding him.
“THOMAS!” John yells, reaching out for him in a gesture he already knows is futile.
Someone fists a hand in his hair and slams his face into the floor, and blackness swallows him down.
***
“You knew him?” James asks.
“I loved him.” says Silver. He pauses, studies James’ face, laughs quietly. “Not like you, James. I loved him because he was my brother.”
“I knew all of my husband’s brothers.” says Miranda. “I did not know you.”
“But you never met his father’s ward, did you?” says Silver.
Miranda’s lips part in understanding.
“Johnny.” she says. “Thomas called you Johnny. You were at Oxford - he said you’d be a fantastic help to our cause as soon as you graduated.”
Silver’s smile only tugs up one corner of his lips, and doesn’t reach his eyes.
“I never did manage that. Graduating. Turns out, once you’ve institutionalized your heir, you realize you can just tell your bastard to go fuck himself and withdraw his funding.”
James can’t get enough air into his lungs.
“But you wouldn’t know anything about that, would you, Lady Hamilton?” asks John, nonchalant. “You wouldn’t know the first thing about what happened to the rest of us, because you took a good man, a noble man, a man of righteousness, if you were to listen to Martha and Brighid and Matthew and Luke in the stables, and you made him leave. You made him abandon my brother.”
Miranda shakes her head.
“And you!” says John, whirling on James, stabbing a finger into his chest. “You let her!”
“Silver-” says James, and his tongue feels heavy as he says it, to the point where he doesn’t know if he said it at all. “John -”
“You let her convince you to leave him! He told me about that book, you know - told me all about it, what it said, what it meant.”
James flinches.
“He loved you, and you abandoned him!” John yells, tears pricking his eyes.
The crew is watching them like a tennis match, completely silent.
“John -” says James, with barely breath behind it.
“You abandoned him!” says John, and jabs James in the chest again. “You abandoned him, you left him, you left him-” with each jab, John gets closer and closer to James’ chest. “You left him, you left him, you left him you left him you -”
James wraps his arms around John’s shoulders, pulls him close, holds him so that John’s face is pressed to his own shoulder.
“We couldn’t have saved him.” says James. “Miranda saved my life by making me leave. The Earl would have had me hung.”
“For what? Adultery? You heard the story they put about.”
“He knew. So did the Navy.” says James. “He knew the truth.”
John pulls back from James’ embrace just far enough to look him in the face.
“How?”
“We always thought it was one of the servants.” says Miranda, quietly.
“Not a fucking chance.” says John. “They all worshipped the ground he walked on. They were devastated. Who else knew?”
Miranda looks at James. James looks at Miranda. They both look at John, still wrapped in James’ arms.
“There is an obvious answer here, and that answer is my father.”
Everyone on the deck turns to look at Abigail Ashe, whose gaze is steady.
“That fucker.” says John, and James finds himself growling his agreement.
***
“James.” says Peter Ashe. “Miranda.”
“Hello, Peter.” says James. He knows he’s standing more like the naval officer he used to be than the pirate captain he has become, but it’s hard not to, now that he’s got a Hamilton Lord to protect once more. “There’s someone you ought to meet.”
“Oh?” says Peter, the picture of unimpressed politesse.
“You remember Alfred Hamilton’s ward, John?” says Miranda, fake smile firmly in place. James steps aside, steps to the asshole guard who’d met them at the dock, the only armed man in the room, and drives the knife he’d stashed in his coat sleeve between his ribs to his heart, and John Silver raises the pistol in his hand.
“You got my brother killed, you son of a bitch.” John snarls, and Peter raises his hands and backs towards the wall, terrified.
“He’s alive, please, James, Miranda, please, he’s alive. The letters are in my desk, he’s in Savannah - please, I didn’t mean -”
John stays where he is, aim unwavering, until Abigail returns with the papers.
“They seem to be in order.” she says. “If Mister Silver’s brother is alive, will you go fetch him, Mister McGraw?”
“We definitely will, Miss Ashe.” says James.
“We can’t leave my brother there, Abigail.” says John. “The Captain would die of want for his true love.”
Miranda buries a smile under her hand, and Peter continues to shake with fear.
“We’d best be off, John.” says James. “The wind we sailed in on could take us to Savannah.”
John raises an eyebrow at Peter, who flinches further back into the corner he’d backed himself into.
“Don’t play with your food, Johnny.” says James, stepping up so that he’s pressed against John’s back. “Didn’t they teach you manners at Eton and Oxford?”
“Where’s the fun in that?” John purrs back.
“Please.” says Peter, and it’s almost a sob.
“Shall we do it together, then?” asks John, before cocking his head. “Miranda, would you like to help?”
Miranda has drawn the sword from the dead guard’s belt.
“This seems like a better weapon for all three of us.” she says.
John and James’ fingers interlock when they grasp the hilt with her.
