The fact that Kalim and Jamil have a very opposite but similar problem that's holding them back will never not be fascinating to me.
For Kalim, he's been so coddled and sheltered all his life that he doesn't know how to be an independent adult. He is perfectly capable of doing things, as seen in his lab-wear vignette, but he always asks Jamil for help. He has been so coddled that he has a learned helplessness and doesn't even have the motivation to try. Even after his character development in book 5, he is shown trying to be independent, but either his parents or Jamil step in and take over.
On the other hand, Jamil was robbed of being a carefree child. He doesn't know how to relax or rely on others. He's been subjected to adultification and made to act far beyond his age or maturity in order to basically parent a boy who's almost the same age as him. He has to believe that he is the most capable person ever, otherwise Kalim is in danger and it's his fault.
And the worst of it is that these problems are reinforced by each other. Kalim's learned helplessness means relying on Jamil, which reinforces Jamil's superiority complex and parenting Kalim. Jamil being overprotective of Kalim means that Kalim never learns or grows, and Jamil being taught to see Kalim as more valuable than anyone else means he never lets Kalim make mistakes or try.
We saw a little bit of change at the end of book 6 (as result of leona's pep talk), and I hope they both continue to grow.

(This was originally an ask received through Twitter)
"Hi! I finished Book 6 on EN Server just a few hours ago, and something stuck out to me in the Mickey Conversation. When reading Fan Subs, it seemed like Mickey was saying he saw the Silver haired weird eye colour boy (probably Silver, heh) in Yu's Room. But reading EN's translation, it pretty clearly placed the boy on Mickey's side of the mirror. Is this added specificity by EN, or reading the original Japanese, is that the conclusion that would come?"
I agree with the EN translation, but! I definitely understand how there might have been some confusion!
Originally Mickey does not say “my dream room,” he says “this dream room,” which is very important.
Tumblr media
Seeing the word "this" (この) might have led a few translators to think, "'this room' is the room in Ramshackle, so Mickey must be describing what he saw in Ramshackle."
Much like English, Japanese differentiates between things close to/belonging to you (this, この) vs. things close/belonging to other people (that, その), but unlike English the difference is a little stricter.
Mickey uses この for "this room," which can only mean the room where he is. If he had meant the prefect's room, he would have said その, for "that room."
Since English can be more flexible with "this" and "that," it is possible that people saw "this room" in Japanese and interpreted it as what "this room" means to themselves, not what it means to Mickey.
From a Japanese-language perspective, however, "this room" is the one occupied by the speaker (Mickey), not the one occupied by the listener (the prefect).
Tumblr media
The idea that the boy was in the prefect's room is further debunked by Mickey’s follow-up line, when he says that he wishes the prefect could also come to see him on "this side" (こっち側, with "this" being from the speaker's (Mickey's) perspective, while the listener's side (Ramshackle) would be そっち側), just like the boy with silver hair :>

Lilia’s Relationship with Malleus and Silver / The Image of a King Upheld by Malleus
Book 7 spoilers
So I’m just thinking about Lilia and his complicated relationship with Malleus and Silver. Literally, it’s at two ends of the spectrum how his relationship is with each of them.
On one hand, he raised Malleus to be a king. He had placed lines between himself and Malleus to a certain degree. He protected him and installed in him the knowledge to be a great king and what is expected of him. Even at the end of book 6, we see Lilia say how a future king shouldn’t be getting lost in his thoughts. And for just a few moments, you can see how that kind of upsets Malleus a bit before he agrees.
Then we have Silver, Lilia found this baby as far as we know, and raised him. He wasn’t raising a future king. There was no expectations or rules when it came to caring for Silver. He just raised him as best as he could and he loved the child and the child loved him in return. To the point of wanting to do his father proud, and also wanting to always be there for him.
You can see the two different ways that Lilia raised and cared for them, and they, in return loved him.
On one hand, I can see Malleus being envious. Envious of the love Silver received compared to him. But he’s not, rather it was Silver crying that tipped Malleus over, because he loves Silver as well.
While Silver wanted to make up for all the love that Lilia always showed him and be there for him till the end but he can’t even do that.
All because Lilia freaking Vanrouge decided that he didn’t want people he loves to suffer the same way he did when he lost loved ones. So, he leaves. Causing a cascade of heartbreak.
Now going back to Malleus, I think about all those years he had with Lilia, but I think about how lonely he might have felt even with those years. He loved Lilia and Lilia loved him…within limitations. He was after all raising the future king. But then remember, Lilia wasn’t always at Malleus’ side. He would leave on adventures while Malleus was at home. And little Malleus would look forward to his return. He would be happy to see Lilia and hear all the stories he would return with and the little souvenirs and I imagine seeing Lilia happy was what made it worth the wait for his return and maybe even what stopped Malleus from being selfish and telling Lilia to stay.
Because that’s how he was being raised, think about the happiness of others, respect their wishes, think about the peoples’ wants…that’s what it means to be a king and the sacrifices that needs to be made.
But it would hurt Malleus wouldn’t it? But Malleus can never show it because even those closest to him expected greatness from him. Expected him to be this great figure that would take over for his grandmother. He will be a King.
So, is it not expected then? For Malleus to, at one point, reach that tipping point?
And that tipping point was at the hurt he saw in his loved ones which reflected his own. Which finally allowed him to express his own.
Because a king can’t fall to his own emotions, but he can for others.
A king can make sacrifices so others can be happy.
So, won’t you let him show you a happy ending?
Even at the cost of his life?

Please ignore how this is my third post telling people to shut up and talk about a certain scene but seriously THERE ARE SO MANY MOMENTS NOT TALKED ABOUT??? Siege of Macindaw wasn’t my favorite book, I won’t lie, but there were some moments that made me cry. After Will fights Machaddish and Horace rescues him, and Will is shaking and freaking out, did we forget that Horace sees his friend covered in blood and starts PANICKING. He immediately is checking for any wounds that might cause Will to bleed out, and asking him questions, and Will is just super frustrated and wants Horace to leave him alone but he WONT, until eventually Horace realizes Will is fine and Will realizes that Horace was just keeping him safe. It just shows how much their friendship has evolved. AND obviously we all know that halt sees Will as his son and everything but you guys realize that the first time he calls him son IS IN SIEGE OF MACINDAW RIGHT??? Halt can tell something is wrong, Will does his whole “yes, no, well kind of, I don’t know” thing, Halt gives him what he hopes is an answer that will help him, and then Will tells him goodnight. And Halts response? “Good night, son.” SON HE CALLED HIM SON LIKE HE SAID IT TO HIM. IT WAS SPOKEN. AND THE LINES AFTER THAT??? “Sometimes, life threw up problems that even the wisest, most trusted mentor couldn’t solve for you. It was part of the pain of growing up. And having to stand by and watch was part of the pain of being a mentor.” I SOBBED. I BROKE DOWN I CRIED ALL OF THESE CHARACTERS MEAN SO MUCH TO ME

Tumblr media
characters. ignihyde , special : ortho shroud , grim ( separate ) ;; platonic . 🖇️ tags. reader is gender neutral ( you/your ), reader may or may not be yuu ( up to the reader ) in idia’s, reader is NOT yuu in..well..yuuken’s, romantic fluff
📡 _a/n. ah, despite the summary this is moreso about the caretaking of ortho and grim, hence the platonic..a romantic of the aftermath with idia and yuuken will come soon! ( hopefully, soon..but planned! )
o. shroud
— hmm, i’d say ortho’s quite fitted to take good enough care of himself, no? but in such a situation to make these circumstances work, let’s take a little hypothetical to make this a real scenario; ortho’s been on a ‘low power mode’ as of late, and idia’d took the bravery in his heart to ask, his finger twirling his pinkened hair to control his heart’s beating, for you to aid him in the matter of watching over him while he collects the material for ortho’s latest update. and anyway, how could you refuse?
— although really even so it boils down to some light conversation as you keep an eye on ortho to make sure nothing goes wrong, according to idia’s worries; and yet he didn’t seem all to worried, but you figured it was because the chances of something going wrong were a mere one in a million..or maybe something else might’ve been amiss? ..well..not like he’d know, actually, since this was ortho’s time to shine, which is as just said, completely unbeknownst to idia; all revealed in that conversation between the two of you.
— “eh, [y/n]? I was a little curious,” ortho looked to you, so you looked over to him and away from the console game he’s excitedly set up at the idea of hanging out with you even for a moment, an excitement you couldn’t help but feel a bit overboard considering why you were to be supposedly looking out for him. “do you like my brother?” you couldn’t help but hum a bit in surprise, though you should’ve expected something like this—he was idia’s brother, after all. but ortho didn’t seem antagonistic, more hopeful, actually, so you, albeit in a bit of a flustered state admitted, “i sure hope not everyone can see right through be about that, it’d be embarrassing..”
— ortho just giggled a bit, “well, i guess it was obvious to me! i could kind of tell, because i could pick up on the way your heart would beat a little faster whenever he’s around!” he then began to whir on about little things he’d picked up on, and sure enough your face was starting to become hot at the idea of the little habits you’d picked up as your crush on idia further developing slowly having become visible. so with no bad intentions you interrupted, “ah, but..why do you ask, ortho?” and you could tell ortho was confused by the way he hummed himself to silence.
— “hwah?!” actually, he seemed shocked now, before he closed his eyes, and you assumed it was from his low power mode ( after all he had become slower as a whole ), though it was clearer to note it was as he was trying to assess what’d just occurred, “oh, but the advice i’ve been giving idia, has it not been working..? i was trying to be a nice little brother..”
— “ortho, um..” you questioned a bit, waving your hand a bit in front of his face to try and comfort him from his worry, “i’m kind of confused, what do you mean about advice for idia?”
— though the cogs were turning in your head, just as ortho confirmed,
— “well, idia really likes you, yaknow?”
— ahaha..you could only wonder if idia meant for this conversation to happen. but considering ortho’s moment of gleeful look, you could only imagine that he didn’t..but at least you knew now, of course, because, idia loves you back.
— and now here ortho was, trying to give advice to you now, on how to confess to his brother; certainly, a help he is, you’ll have to thank ortho many a times later.
grim
— as for grim, well..safe to say there could be a plethora of reason behind it, but you were brought to ramshackle, apologetically so by yuuken but you assured him you didn’t mind, to make sure he wouldn’t cause trouble seeing as enma apparently had some troubles regarding the adeuce duo, but would have to leave grim behind since it seemed grim was lacking in his studies, and the last thing he wanted was for grim to have an excuse out of it. and, well, you were the one he trusted the most for the job, he admitted, though a bit embarrassed to say it.
— laugh it up, grim warns when yuuken’s out of hearing range—but he complains and assured you that he is to be the most powerful mage in twisted wonderland, and that “studying won’t stop him!” should you be quick to question if that means he’ll get to it then, he dismisses you quickly by complaining about how boring it is and that he’d much rather be doing something else, so he scatters off to the lounge to lay on the couch, and with nothing much to do, you inevitably follow suit.
— you’ll have to deal with some complaining on grim’s end i’ll tell you that much; but even so you can tell grim takes kindly to you, otherwise surely he’d be more more antagonistic. albeit he surely isn’t soft on you like he is yuuken, something you find cute in a way, he doesn’t particularly try to make fun of you or anything, which you’ve come to appreciate. in the end, he chooses to bother you a bit, pawing at your lap, “aye, [y/n], since you’re here,” he begins, seeming a little cocky but you can tell he seems a little pleading, “pass me some tuna! i’ve been feeling hungry..”
— in response you ponder for a moment before he quickly follows up, “it’s in the fridge! c’mon, i’ll try and get you some praise through the grapevine to yuuken, ‘kay?!” and while you felt a little bad for letting that being the reason you agree, you don’t end up stopping yourself from, albeit hesitantly, getting up to go fulfill the deed, grim saluting to you gleefully in response. “and make sure it’s the premium one!”
— it took you a bit longer than expected to get to the kitchen and back, so you could barely hear an, “ugh..” which was a telling signal to the start of grim’s complaining as you came to him from the fridge to supply him a little supreme tuna ( you could only hope yuuken wouldn’t be too miffed at you spoiling the little direbeast ), “seriously, you n’ yuu are so cringe!” you couldn’t help but be offended before he continued, “can’t wait for him to finally confess so his stupid pining can be over with…”
— “uh, huh?” at your questioning, barely-processing-what-you’d-just-heard-tone, grim became aware of his little slip up, turning to you warningly, “oh, wait, pretend you didn’t hear!! the tuna i’m eating is what he promised me if i’d stay silent, so hush!”
— “ahah, okay..?” maybe it’s true, that your feelings are mutual..
— so you sighed a breath of relief.

Truth Spilled : Prefect is not the perfect extrovert they're assumed to be - not at all. Idia Shroud x GN!Reader (may be slightly fem leaning, apologies in advance if I missed anything like that)
Synopsis : post book 6, after Idia shows his skills, Prefect decides to take him aside when he seems overwhelmed by the people, leaving Ortho to entertain those who remain. As they reassure and comfort him, the cracks show and the shell reveals a close guarded secret.
Warnings : crying, mental health confessions, ptsd and beyond. Occasional cursing on both ends. Basic proof reading, potentially missed grammatical or spelling errors is higher than you think. Angst is real, but there's some playful fluff in the end. Only platonic in this blurb.
Authors Note : very self indulgent. How I personally have been feeling as the game progresses as someone with severe PTSD and anxiety. Had I been in a dorm, definitely would have been Ignihyde 100%.
---
After the impressive amount of prowess and just cocky amount of game play by the usually introverted dorm leader, you decided to rescue him when the nervous sweating kicked in. The initial adrenaline had worn off, and you knew the only reason he hadn't bolted was because Ortho had never looked happier, getting to interact and be normal with a group of friends, and making sure his big brother got to join in the fun.
Big brother was all "fun"d out, and as a good host, and just sympathetic anxiety riddled bean, you take him upstairs with the excuse of needing assistance with some older technology you had been relying on.
After gently steering him up the stairs and to the furthest guest room, you hold on lightly to the sleeve of his jacket to guide him. Nothing too invasive, but still a comfort, despite his initial flinch, he seemed to accept the action and looked almost grateful for the escape.
"Here we are. Furthest back and best insulation, trust me." You say leading him in and closing the door quietly. "Sorry for the white lie, but you looked like you needed the break, so I thought-" immediately your cut short by a nasty look and a huff as he dropped onto the bed and fell back.
"What would you even know about how I feel? What was I not cheerful enough for your liking? Perfect Prefect, of course you'd notice. Why'd you bring attention to it?" Idia snapped giving you a dirty look. Now Ortho would be upset and think he hadn't had any fun.
Sigh escaping your lips you take a seat on the floor and lean against the closed door. Eyes closed you steady your breathing the best that you can. Despite your best, tears streak gently and slowly from each eye. You can hear him shift panicked on the bed, assuming he was sitting upright and staring. You decide to keep your eyes closed, more amused by the expression in your mind and not wanting to embarrass yourself further.
"Idia, I know you're smart, I know you think you know all that there is to know about everything." Slowly you open your eyes, ignoring the tears, allowing yourself this moment. He wanted to know why you did it, why you interfered, well he'd certainly find out today. "You're not near as smart when it comes to any information you think you know about me."
"I grew up in constant survival mode. As soon as I begin to heal from the nightmare my life has been, I'm ripped into a world that I've never known. Most memories have been ripped from me of my old world, and I was dumped here with only my survival instincts keeping me from truly breaking down." You wipe some tears away, just to clear your vision to catch his gaze. He looked guilty and chewed at his lower lip.
"I've been nearly killed by half the damn people I call my "friends" and honestly, I do love them all, but the only reason it's even been possible is my desperation for survival." You laugh coldly and stand, the rant and your breathing becoming more erratic as it all comes tumbling out.
"Perfect Prefect? I don't have any other way to protect myself. Idia I didn't even have a phone until the THIRD overblot. THREE of the most powerful students on this campus had to try killing me for the fool of a headmaster to give me this... technological piece of shit." You toss your phone next to him on the bed. "I may not know much about this world, but I know about technology. It's different but very similar to what I used to work with in my old world..." Catching the surprised look on his pale face you can't help but laugh. "Yes yes, pitiful, magicless human knows how technology works. There's a reason that my grades keep Grimm an honor student, I'm far from stupid."
The crying resumes and laughter is mixed in as you give him a pathetic look. "Even he's attacked me, and Grimm's the closest I even have to a family in this hellscape. Idia I'm so tired." You choked up a sob and sank to your knees, back pressed against the wall now.
Unable to, refusing to look weak, you dry the tears beat you can as you answer his initial question. "What do I know about how you feel or why I interfered?" You let out a low and sad chuckle and look up to him. "Because I so desperately have needed to be saved, to be rescued and taken somewhere quiet so I could breathe that I couldn't just leave you like that. I couldn't just ignore the panic you were in." You let out a sigh and hug you knees unable to stable your breathing as much as you'd like.
"Feel free to leave or stay, do what's best for you. I'm just going to be here." You say after one minute stretches out into several. "I'd appreciate if-" Once again the Idia interrupts you, but in a much more surprising and soft way.
He embraces your trembling form, kneeling to be on the floor with you and just embraces you. He mumbled a genuine and quiet apology, stroking the back of your head. His hair provided a soft and safe warmth and glow.
You look up nearly sobbing again, and question him "Idia, will you be the friend I can be myself with? Will you give me the space to be pathetic and cry my anxiety away?" The sobs came out choked and desperate, pleading for him to be your safe space.
"Of course." He replied gently, never breaking the embrace. He gave the bed a dirty look. "First things first, we're getting you a new phone. Immediately." He grumbled unlocking his own to put in a rushed order. "There's no way you're going to be able to play games with me on that thing." He growled clicking his tongue, distaste for the headmaster evident on his face.
You burst into laughter and hugged him back, burying your face against his neck. You ignored his embarrassed noises, he didn't pull away or push you away, so he must be fine with it. "Sounds good to me." You mumble out, feeling a genuine sense of comfort from someone who finally could understand at least some of what you've been feeling for the entirety of your life.

Dialogue Comparison, EN vs. JP: Book 6
Tumblr media
Original Jamil: A servant cannot disrespect the kindness of their master.
EN Jamil: Kalim’s gesture would feel hollow if I didn’t follow his example.
Tumblr media
In the English-language game, Kalim references hoverboards as if they are an established technology in the Twisted Wonderland universe. But in the original game Kalim does not seem to know what hoverboards are, and refers to them as flying skateboards. This may imply that Kalim is unfamiliar with the concept of hoverboards and they may actually be special STYX technology rather than something with which everyone is familiar.
Tumblr media
Original Epel: Daaang…when I think about Rook-san being able to use it, that becomes some mighty scary magic…
EN Epel: Daaang…that’s a might scary piece o’ magic.
Tumblr media
Original Riddle: What in the world were we (doing)…?
EN Riddle: What’s their game now?
Leona is the only character of the five abductees who is able to instantly recognize when he awakes in a simulation. Riddle originally expresses confusion about what it was they had been doing, but in his English-language dialogue he sounds like he is still aware that Idia and Ortho are working behind the scenes, when he isn’t.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The English-language adaptation removed references to most of the NRC students still being minors, Vil saying that he and Idia are still 18, and the fact that they are all students, which are all normal changes for EN.
Tumblr media
Interestingly, Vil’s line at the end of the game about still being 18 was preserved, despite being removed earlier on.
Tumblr media
In a beautiful use of furigana, our introduction to the child formerly known as Ortho is with robot-Ortho and dead-Ortho simultaneously saying, “Pleasure to make your acquaintance, me.”
The kanji used is 僕 for “I or me”, but both characters pronounce it as "Ortho."
Tumblr media
This actually happened earlier in the game, as well, perhaps as foreshadowing, but could not be carried over to EN due to language limitations.
Tumblr media
While Idia seems to have programmed robot-Ortho to refer to him as nii-san, original Ortho would call him nii-chan.
Neither of these words technically exist in English, so robot-Ortho has been calling Idia by his name on EN, with original-Ortho saying “Idy.”
Tumblr media
In the scene where Idia reveals he is going to support original-Ortho’s plans he originally adopts the name that Ortho uses for him, “nii-chan.”
If EN wanted to follow JP’s continuity Idia would have had to refer to himself as “Idy,” just like EN-original-Ortho, but he doesn’t.
Instead, EN-Idia refers to himself as “big bro,” though neither Ortho ever refers to him in that way in the English-language game.
So while the original game has two names for Idia depending upon which Ortho is speaking, it seems that EN has three: robot Ortho’s “Idia,” original Ortho’s "Idy" and Idia’s way of referring to himself in relation to original Ortho: “big bro.”
Tumblr media
And Idia referring to himself as original-Ortho’s name for him is not a secret from robot-Ortho: Idia refers to himself as original-Ortho’s “nii-chan” in a conversation with robot-Otho that we see in Book 5, which serves as a direct parallel to Idia’s identical line in Book 6. (A line that was changed on EN.)
Tumblr media
This comes up again during Fairy Gala IF where Idia originally refers to himself as JP-Ortho’s “nii-chan," and as “big bro" on EN.
Tumblr media
After original-Ortho dies for the second time, he shifts from “nii-chan” to robot-Ortho’s “nii-san,” to pass the torch.
Since robot-Ortho only ever refers to Idia by his name on EN that is what this becomes, but this means that EN misses out on a significant moment later on:
Tumblr media
Idia tells robot-Ortho that he no longer needs to play the part of Ortho for him anymore.
Tumblr media
Dismissed from his role, we see Ortho do something he has never done before: He refers to Idia by his full name, even calling him “Idia-san,” as, in that moment, they are no longer siblings.
Tumblr media
Idia agrees to allow robot-Ortho to be his real little brother, and Ortho immediately returns to using “nii-san” again.
This moment was not, and maybe just couldn’t be, included on EN, with Ortho referring to Idia in the same way he always does throughout the entire conversation.
Tumblr media
In Rook’s original dialogue, he follows up Vil’s praise of Epel’s accuracy with his magic by saying, "Speaking of Spelldrive, I’m told that even Leona-kun holds Epel-kun’s flying prowess in high regard."
This is a reference to an earlier conversation in Book 6, where Epel himself tells Rook that Leona has said that he is the best first-year flier in the Spelldrive Club.
Tumblr media
There seems to have been some confusion on EN, however, and Rook’s line was mistranslated as, “I’m told that Epel’s flying prowess is even greater than Leona’s,” which is not the case.
Tumblr media
Original Azul: No matter how many hearts I have it will never be enough.
EN Azul: My heart can’t take any more of this.
(Azul’s octopus joke removed :< I read that octopi have three hearts!)
Tumblr media
Original Leona: After all, you’re not like me.
EN Leona: After all, I’m not like you.
Kind of pedantic, but in Leona’s original dialogue he is saying that there is still hope for Jamil, though there is no hope for him. Jamil finally understands this later on, realizing that Leona has been trying to teach him that he still has potential, even if things may look bleak at the moment. Leona’s line of, “After all, you’re not like me” was, however, written backwards in the English-language of the game into, “After all, I’m not like you,” making Leona the subject of the sentence, instead.
Tumblr media
Original Azul: I spent years just lounging around, eating whatever I felt like…
EN Azul: I spent years just lounging around, doing whatever I felt like…
Original Azul: I followed that abysmal routine for years, wasting time and storing calories!!!
EN Azul: Yes, it was an abysmal routine. I wasted times and gained precious little!
Tumblr media
While the English-language adaptation kept Ace’s insult of the player, they removed Deuce’s.
Tumblr media
Ruggie compliments Leona on having absurdly long legs in his original dialogue, which EN translated as a comment on him being “annoyingly tall.”
It is rare for this kind of comment to make it to EN. Other times that a character has commented on Leona or Vil having long legs, it has been removed.
Tumblr media
In one of the final scenes of Book 6 Idia is explaining what happened to robot-Ortho. In Ortho’s original dialogue he says “he” when referring to the dead Ortho, never actually using his name.
In the English-language adaptation this was changed to Ortho saying “original Ortho” instead.
