Man I'm reading this Robespierre bio by Hilaire Belloc and it's so bewilderingly MEAN
Like somehow he's making even Robespierre's advocacy for actors, Protestants, and Jewish people sound pointless
Tumblr media
It's not very evident from this passage alone and combined with the tone of the rest of the book it's like HERE GOES ROBESPIERRE AGAIN WITH HIS ABSOLUTES THAT DID NOTHING

"Ophar had never been deceived – he understood why the Custodians looked the way they did. If you concealed your killers in the armour of gods, then they would be worshipped even as they raised their blades. Ophar had lived through the darkest of times, witnessing atrocity from coast to mountain, and knew murderers when he saw them. It didn’t matter what they wore, nor how politely they expressed themselves – Valdor’s soldiers had been created to kill, and kill, and kill again. They had no other function. Emotion had been knocked out of them, replaced by a horrifying sangfroid that bordered on the mechanical. They were devils. They were products of an age of nightmares." - Valdor, Birth of an Imperium, 100
Murderers? That’s calling them lightly. I prefer what that one Thunder Warrior called him:
“You’re a lying, murdering bastard, and we were all supposed to be cracking down on them.”
-That One Thunder Warrior(Whose Name I forgot)

You talked about SG quintessons being like the pemalites, and i want to hear more
This post might not go through because my wifi is absolutely fragged right now, but let me go bring down one of my Animorphs books, fuck I haven't touched these suckers (affectionate) in years
Now I'm gonna be using books 10: the android and the Ellimist Chronicals as references, as again it's been years, fuck it's been so long I missed the smell of these books.
Our first excerpt sets up our initial situation: the pemalites (and likely the SG quintessons) were a quite long lived race, just... loving life. Loving their own lives, and the lives of others. Just... a sweet race, imo the pemalites were the closest damn thing to an objectively morally good race. page 102 (10: the android)
Tumblr media
Here's our explanation for why they made the chee (and, possibly a similar line of thinking for the SG quintessons?), page 103 (10: the android)
Tumblr media
This just says what we've established again but i just wanted to show it. page 104 (10: the android)
Tumblr media
Now this is also a part that majorly reminded me of what i can see the SG Quintessons having done, spreading life throughout the galaxy (carefully of course as to not cause invasive species. I suspect that, respectively in the cases of Ellimist and Quintus, they were taught quite well to avoid that.) page 181 (the ellimist chronicles)
Tumblr media
Now i admit i still have a lot to learn about the baseline quintessons, but i feel like the SG quintessons in general would have valued peace and freedom, and that the self arguing we see in canon in SG can be depicted as far more constructive criticism rather than destructive. I'm ultimately fascinated by the setup the Quintessons have between their faces, and how they're ultimately parts of a whole.
... now, you can fully argue that the majority of their species went through an event/attack like the Howlers' attack on the pemalites (though, unlike the pemalites, i believe the sg Quintessons would be only pushed to the brink of extinction rather than fully succumbing to it).

"Time flies -- oh yes; that summer should be here again; and I still have the faculty of wonder at it. The world swinging round again and bringing its green and blue close to one's eyes."

If you, like me, thought Tangerine and Lemon were the best part of Bullet Train (2022), I have great news!
The book Bullet Train by Kotaro Isaka (trans. Sam Malissa) is filled with great character descriptions and quirks that didn’t make it or get touched on in the movie. You really get a deeper and better look at these characters.

“Good. Anyway, Amy is missing and the scene is weird as shit. The situation has a real Lovecraft feel to it. Though, you know, if you come over it’ll be more of an Anne Rice situation. If you know what I mean.” “Who’s—” “Because you’re gay.”
