I’ve recently become obsessed with the musical @hadestown, which retells the myth of Orpheus & Eurydice. So it felt like a good time for a #fandomfriday post featuring 1 of my oldest & greatest loves: Greek mythology. In the spirit of #SDCC week, I’m sharing a fangirl moment: meeting Garth Nix, author of one of my favorite fantasy books!! I’ve owned this copy of Sabriel since I was a sophomore in high school! I spent one summer in elementary school reading every Greek/Roman myth book at my local library - and I do mean every. How I moved on to other mythologies was bc I ran out of classical 😆. Anyway, I’ve always loved how Athena’s epithet was “grey-eyed,” so I gave myself a those for my #ootd homage to her & every Greek myth I’ve loved before. 🦉🦉🦉 I think we’re so lucky now to have gorgeous, exciting, and fun mythology retellings that are also more inclusive. These books definitely read Middle Grade, but if you haven’t checked out Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson & Heroes of Olympus series, I do recommend them as fun & fast summer reads with clever riffs on Classical myth. For the YA crowd, I enjoyed Kendare Blake’s Goddess War duology & am excited for Liliam Rivera’s upcoming NEVER LOOK BACK (an Orpheus & Eurydice retelling). It took me a long time to embrace my Alice-ness, but I do often have my head in the ☁️s. So here we are! In publishing, as with the rest of society, Black authors face a lot more obstacles to success. So from June 14 - 20, there’s an initiative to support Black authors by buying their books this week to #blackoutbestsellerlist & show #blackpublishingpower!
