Mechelen wants to reuse waste from local companies in the furniture industry: "Nothing should be lost"

The Circular Hub region of Mechelen[1] wants to think about how industrial waste can be reused in the furniture industry, together with several partners and furniture companies. With a survey among companies and organisations in the Rivierenland, the initiators first want to map out which materials, such as textiles, metal and wood, can possibly be recycled.

The Circular Hub region of Mechelen[2] wants to reuse waste materials from nearby companies together with local furniture companies Cammers[3] and Bulo[4]. The city has a tradition of furniture making and wants to revive that chapter in an ecological way. "The dream is to reuse all waste and residual products that are released during the production of furniture. Even furniture that is thrown away. In such a way nothing goes to waste," says Patrick Princen (Green party), alderman of Climate and Environment, summarising the project.

The Circular Hub, a collaboration between the City, Thomas More Research[5], Unizo[6] Province of Antwerp and Ecoso vzw[7], first wants to gain insight into the waste or residual flows. "By that we mainly mean surpluses of wood, foam, plastics, textiles and metal. We ask companies and organisations from the Rivierenland[8] to see what they have in their waste container. Based on that survey, we look at how we can tailor that supply to the demand for products. For that you first need to have a good picture of those flows."

Various benefits

According to alderman Princen, there are several advantages to a circular furniture industry. "Firstly, in an ideal scenario, nothing is lost anymore. Everything that we now label as waste is reprocessed into products. Secondly, one avoids becoming too dependent on others for raw materials or petrochemical products. If you use them carefully you have to rely less on production from other parts of the world."

Alderman for Enterprise Greet Geypen (Open VLD, liberal party) also sees opportunities in the project. "This project is aimed at stimulating the circular economy and teaching skills to fill in jobs with shortage in occupation. Collaboration with local furniture companies can accelerate the transition to a circular economy and strengthen employment in our region."

België: Werkstraffen voor leden van "smishingbende"

Drie jongeren (20, uit Bornem) hebben werkstraffen gekregen voor ‘informaticafraude’. De drie waren lid van een ‘smishingbende’ die, in 2021, meerdere slachtoffers maakte. In totaal maakten de drie negentien mille buit, door berichtjes te versturen die zogenaamd van CardStop kwamen, een dienst die betaalkaarten, betaalapplicaties of connected devices blokkeert als die gestolen of verloren zijn.…
