Also, I tried to do dog breeds that aren't used often! Both as a personal challenge and also to find dogs I think that fit better.

Ghost: Akbash. Huge lifestock guardian. They're nice to family, but extremely protective, often clashing with strangers. Safe around kids, but not other dogs.

Soap: Scottish Deerhound. They're one of the few Scottish breeds meant to take down deer. Strong, athletic and the hair... y'all get it

Gaz: Belgian Malinois. They're common working dogs and well muscled. Most intelligent dog and Gaz is one of the smartest.

Price: German pointer. He's a working man, so he's a working dog. Pretty self explanatory

Alex: Australian Kelpie. Versatile, intelligent, one of the smartest dog breeds as well.

Farah: Afghan Hound. Before her country was taken over, she came from a well off family. She's incredibly strong and pretty and I feel it suits her.

Laswell: Blue Lacy. They're multipurpose and excellent at any job they're given. Also, they're such pretty dogs!

Graves: Bluetick Coonhound. They're literally hunting dogs who like sniffing people out, work best in packs and they're known for having pretty coats.

Alejandro: Hardest to pick. Still not happy with it. Anatolian shepherd dog. They tend to make packs and are wonderful pack leaders.

Rodolfo: Calupoh. Basically Mexican Wolfdogs. Fiercely loyal, stable and known to have a lot of tolerance. They also are distrustful of strangers.

König: Bernese Mountain dog. They're big, meant for hard work and rather sweet. I've heard before they're susceptible to anxiety but I can't find anything that backs that up.

Horangi: Basenji, this one was suggested by my friend! They're known as wild dogs and they kill their prey by jumping straight up to get it which is unusual for dogs. They also don't bark, instead they more scream.

Chuy: Borzoi. I'm not going to explain.

Reyes: Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever. They're Canadian, energetic and intelligent.

Now why borzoi, beyond the obvious warp fuckery that made them so long?

well: these boys are big and strong and fast and - crucially - they were bred to hunt wolves. Some space wolves say it is rank superstition; others think it a curse - but every now and then their packs (both human and wolf) are haunted by long white shadows that rip out throats and leave no trace. You cannot escape them - they are tireless. You cannot hurt them - they are faster than any beast of the wilds. All you can do is run.

Darlin' Headcanons

-> (Not technically a headcanon) When I listened to Sam's playlist for the first time, Darlin was Asher in my brain. Looked exactly how most people (that I've seen) imagine Asher, with fluffy blonde hair and blue puppy dog eyes. He was kind of dumb and clueless too. He has since then evolved to sort of fit with most of the Darlin headcanons.

-> His name is Lucky (the only remnant of his former self).

-> When he first developed his bloodlust, his mother bought him a safe muzzle until he could control his urges.

He still owns the muzzle and will put it on if it flares up. He hasn't had to though. He doesn't hate his mom for muzzling him.

-> He was really close with Milo growing up. When he and his mom would get into an argument, he would stay the night.

-> (just finished rewatching steven universe, if you get the ref, I love you) He didn't leave Dahlia without telling anybody, he told Milo. He told Milo what he planned to do and begged him not to tell anybody no matter how much the pack pressed.

-> Really likes rabbits. To pet, to cuddle, to play with, to eat.

Speaking of eating, he loves Blue or Rare meats. He lost his shit when he tried Beef Tartare.

-> Both his parents are extremely tall. His mother is 7'2", his bio-dad is 6'7". Darlin' is 7'0"

-> When Angel first met Darlin, they thought that he was David's brother or a close cousin.

-> When Babe gets new meat to try from their job, they will go to Darlin so he can taste it.

-> He is a lot younger than the main 3. He looks the oldest but is only in his late 20s.

-> When the unempowered friend was attacked, he asked for their memory to be wiped. Of the attack and of him.

-> The mate group chat is insanely active and will sneak a peek every now and then (since Sam is in it). He is completely starstruck by the amount of violent tension and threats in there.

-> Has a few friends in the house of Baz(?)

-> Speaking of friends, when he was with Quinn, he would stay over at his house for days at a time. It was kind of a hub for him and his other friends he met through Quinn.

When they broke up, the friends didn't side with Quinn and just watched the fire burn. They haven't reached out to him since except for one.

-> He still smokes and holds a bit of cigarette elitism and hates vapes. Babe has said to him multiple times, "You're mad because they're having fun on the ride to lung cancer??? Alright."

-> Has fought off and was chased down by a young, trainee Sweetheart. He claims, in secret, that it was horrifying.

-> Too prideful for his own good. Almost physically fought with Angel because he claimed they were cheating in Monopoly and they both didn't want to step down or be mature. Angel was cheating, but that's not the point.

-> Despite having common spats or snark-offs with the mates, he does enjoy their company and always offers himself as a stable shoulder or listening ear.

-> His wolf form is really like lanky. I know he's a wolf, but he looks kind of like a borzoi.

-> His family is also really known for their really nice hair. Darlin cut it when he was younger in his teen-angst phase, but has been letting it grow back out.

(this is really big (pun so intended)) Treasure is next and that will be it for the vampire mates / listeners.

Let me tell you guys the story of Vex.

I have adored her father from the moment I met him when he was 10 months old and he came and stuck his entire head into my purse looking for treats at my first borzoi national. I adored him even more when I saw him again a year later and he was developing into an exceptional male. He was my first choice as a stud for Margo, but I will not be breeding her, so that’s moot. Even after making the decision to pull Margo from the breeding gene pool, I remained obsessed with Varus. I’ve had the opportunity to really get to know him over the years and he is a wonderful dog on so many levels.

I first saw her mother in 2021 when she was being campaigned (and finished the year as #5 AKC borzoi), but didn’t meet her and fall in love with her for another year. She is a typical borzoi bitch, one who doesn’t give you the time of day until she decides you’re worth her time. Thankfully she very quickly warmed up to me, and she’s my precious Leisel weisel and we love each other and it’s gross. She’s one of the sweetest borzoi I’ve ever met. It helps that she’s also gorgeous and almost perfect structurally.

When I decided I wouldn’t be breeding Margo, the search was on for another hopeful foundation bitch. My best friend and breeding partner was planning this breeding for awhile, and I knew it would be exactly what I was looking for in regard to pedigree, structure, and temperament.

I was given the immense privilege of helping with the whelping, and it was a magical (albeit stressful and sometimes scary) experience. All puppies were born at over a lb, which is very large! Most borzoi are born in the range of 11-16oz, Vex was the smallest at 16.2 and Riddick the largest at 21.

With 8 puppies you have to be very vigilant everyone is getting enough colostrum and then milk to keep healthy and gaining. The first week is pretty scary, everyone can be born healthy but then take a bad turn in the blink of an eye.

Even though Vex was a relatively large puppy, since she was the smallest we were keeping an extra close eye on her. And you guys. This puppy. She was so quietly tenacious about eating. She didn’t yell or fight about it, just determinedly pushed her way to a nipple and DID NOT let it go. She quickly got to the middle of the pack weight wise, but it was too late for me. I was absolutely smitten.

With my priorities though, I knew I couldn’t let an emotional tie or “gut feeling” influence my decision. I wanted the best bitch I could get as the potential beginning of my breeding program. I had I long list of wants and needs and wasn’t going to settle for anything mediocre, no matter how much I loved a puppy on an emotional level. I didn’t tell my friend about loving vex, as I didn’t want to influence her thinking or decision making as she’s growing these puppies and evaluating their potential.

We get to about six weeks and really start discussing picks. My gut feeling about Vex had not diminished, I knew she was going to be special. I didn’t know if she was going to be special for me or someone else, but she was going to be special. My friend reveals to me she’s between maroon collar girl (vex) and pink collar girl (Violette) for me, but hasn’t decided.

After some very lengthy discussions on their differences structurally, and how each one was meeting my list of priorities, I decide to tell my friend I want Vex. She was only not ticking one box for me, but was ticking the huge additional box of gut feeling and emotional tie. The decision was also much easier knowing I would be co-owning my friend’s keeper(s) as well.

That one box she wasn’t ticking is developing a lot better than either of us expected, and I’m so beyond happy with our decision. She’s an actual clone of her mother with a a couple traits from her father. She’s elegant and curvy and unbelievably gorgeous. I won’t get into the structure discussion here but I’ll just say she’s really lovely overall. No dog is perfect and there will always be something to improve of course, but she’s not far from my absolute ideal borzoi. (With the caveat she’s a baby and nothing is set in stone until 3-4 with bitches)

This puppy has had my heart from the day she was born, and I just know the journey we’re about to go on is going to be amazing!!!

I've missed noodlehound pack walks so much!! They were like a monthly thing in Atlanta, but the community in the CA bay area is spread out a whole lot more and to my knowledge these aren't a regular thing (yet? I hope yet.)

There is a very frequent one in Sacramento, but that's over an hour away, and I'm still car-less. Nvm that we'd both fry to a crisp in Sacramento right now.
