Dance
Set in Atlanta, Georgia shortly before it was sacked during the American Civil War, this is what ensues after a mortal reverend rejects a vampire's offered Embrace.
It's not meant to be a pleasant scene so much as it is a horror and an injustice, so take precaution of both the setting and the contents when you crack it open. The scene is a fight/assault styled in prose as a dance. And there is blood, of course, but it doesn't feature heavily.
Shock was the cold hand that seized Stéphane's heart, but missing the component of life to make it beat, the ugliness of rejection did not pump throughout his body. It did not take the heat from his already cold corpse. Perspiration did not bleed from his pores. His chest did not stutter.
It flushed from without. He was twenty-three and the sixteenth century was alive again under Versailles' crystal drop chandeliers. Louis and Marie had fled to Tuileries as the destitute reposessed their home. But he. He stood still, in awe of all the splendor that it was possible for a man to own while Stéphane had starved.
Crystal, glass, and brass. They were such arbitrary objects, but the realization washed over him warm and painful as it had back then. Even surrounded by finery, he could posses none of it. Not the clothing he wore. Not the Hall they sat in. Least of all the man opposite him. But even half-colored and lower than his peers, Junior's white aristocrat's blood sealed his place in the landed gentry.
"You made me believe we were beautiful together."
"Stefan, I was young--
"--And yet I still gave myself to you with no expectation."
A shudder of revulsion at the memory of their shared touch ran through the other man. It shattered Stéphane's world. Without warning, he grabbed the colored reverend's mouth. His pale white fingers caught Junior around the lower jaw, like he was a biting dog.
"Your mother never wanted you," he hissed as he dragged Junior's head forward. "Neither the slave that was forced to carry you, nor the white woman that took care of you. So who's left for you, Junior?"
It was gratifying to see the fear in Junior's dull black eyes equivocate the pound of flesh his rejection had dug out of Stéphane's chest. So gratifying that Stéphane barely registered when the animal he'd bridled bit and then ran.
Junior knocked over his own chair as he brayed for help, but the collar of own habit choked him back.
He tried to wrench the cloth away, but Stéphane, although shorter, had always been stronger.
"Haven't you noticed, mon cher?" He twisted Junior around. "We waited on ourselves at dinner. The servants are in their quarters. The Estate is big. And it's empty. So."
Stéphane leveraged his grip on the man's coat to grasp his broad shoulders and shove them down.
"Go down, nice and easy."
Junior's willowy frame bent, like a twig between Stéphane's hands. If his boots weren't kicking gouges into the floor, Stéphane might've been dipping him.
But now that anger had been vented in an ugly rent on Junior's cheek, Stéphane was remorseful; the creature struggling in his grasp was wretched to throw away eternity with the only love he'd ever known. As much as he'd wanted to ask for this dance, he had over-estimated Junior's ability to see the steps, so he tried to be quick. He tried to be kind.
He sunk his teeth in the sliver of a pulse below the alcove of Junior's jaw and neck, but the mortal jerked away with surprising strength. His beautiful brown skin ripped from Stéphane's fangs into wet trenches, but senseless of his own pouring blood and Stéphane's icy grip around his wrist, he threw his weight against the length of his tether.
Their bodies collided as Junior kicked and twisted into lithe shapes, but he was always at the edge of Stéphane's clutching hands. Again and again he reeled Junior's arms and clothing back until the seams and joints popped.
It was the kind of violent choreography that Stéphane's immortal body knew from the gutters of Paris during the revolt; his corpse did not bruise. It did not tire.
Vitality, however, was finite, and Junior, a sedantary pastor, had poured it from his throat in his own terror. He had put up a good fight, but Stéphane could feel from the heaviness of his limbs and his unsteady balance that he was overdrawn.
He snagged Junior around the torso and pinned him to his chest with a weight one arm alone shouldn't have possessed. Frederick struggled, but his failing body was kitten-like in Stéphane's grip.
A dark inevitability settled over the end of the dance. Stéphane shut the chandelier's spotlight off. In the dark, both men breathed in heavy ragged silence. It was broken only by the horrible crash of their empty dishes being swept onto the floor. Stéphane laid Junior on his back.
The darkness was meant as a modesty, but Stéphane could still smell him. The table groaned as he climbed up onto it, one knee between Junior's thighs and another at his hip. He pressed the heel of his palm against the cut vessel, stemming the flow with the same strength he'd tamed with, he'd endured the night's abuse with, that he loved with.
His other hand wrenched the shirt open a section at a time. Buttons pinged off of scattered silverware and wood. He'd fix it later by gaslamp. He'd dutifully sew each one back on. For now, he peeled it off of him, leaving the man of God splayed, bloodied, and bare.
He laid his injured hand over Junior's gasping lips, then slowly squeezed it into a fist, wringing out each drop of the blood the wound could give into his mouth. It left dark splotches against the soft lips in the ambient light. It was almost too much for Stéphane to bear but he threaded the last of his patience to prolong for a moment what should have been gentle and sacred.
"That's my blood," he panted. "Now for yours."
Then he leaned down to kiss the well tap and take communion.

Slender Sitter Part V: Finale
“I-Is it gone?” Offender raised his head from your lap, looking past the sheet draping over the sturdy table. You paused and held your breath, trying to listen over Trender’s sniffling sobs.
“I don’t know.” You whispered, “But let’s just stay here until your mom gets home. Just in case.” You soothed, and placed your hand back on his shoulder. Your entire arm was screaming due to your broken collar bone, and you could tell that it didn’t look pleasing to the eye from the looks all four boys were giving you.
“Are you sure your neck is ok?” Slender piped up with a whisper. The constant reminders of them checking in was endearing, but just as painful. All it did was remind you of the burning pain radiating around your collar.
“I’ll be fine. Just...don’t make me move too much.” You could barely reach up your good arm to scratch your nose, let alone be jostled around by a few kids. The adrenaline has far from worn off, and you couldn’t tell if you’d be able to make it to the end of the night without screaming from the pain.
There were sounds throughout the house that were difficult to pinpoint the source. Some creaks and groans the boys had no reaction to, but others made them shift uneasily or return to staring at the door.
You whole body jolted when the small side door to the library splintered open with a pair of long, chipped talons. You groaned as you crawled from beneath the table, grabbing Trender as you done so.
“We need to go somewhere else! Quick!” You held your wounded arm to your chest, and Trender huddled on your side. You managed to help Offender push over some furniture with your foot that was serving as protection earlier.
“The cupboard!” Slender called out, shimmying from his craned position from the table and running towards the main doors. Slender pushed the splintered spear out from under the curved brass handles and heaved the door open once there was enough space to squeeze through the jar of the doors.
“Be careful of the glass! Don’t fall!” You shout, following the older brothers down the stairs. It was more easier said than done, because some of the glass were still in large, unbreakable pieces that you almost slipped on.
“There you are.” A deep voice growled. The suspicious sounds from earlier proved to be another being entering the manor. One that was much bigger than the creature from before.
You looked up at the caped demon, setting down Trender to waddle to his favorite sibling. You gulped, hunching over instinctively to protect yourself as you stared at this...thing...this god-like entity.
“I don’t understand how such a stupid human like yourself could become even more foolish. What will you achieve by protecting these children, hm? Pride? Perhaps a sense of accomplishment in your miserable life?” The demonic entity from before coward behind the taller figure as it looked down on you.
“They get to live.”
“The human perception of life is flawed. Consider this a lesson, children, from your good friend, The King of Chaos, himself.”
And like a ragdoll, your body was thrown against the broken chandelier.
***
“Stop! You can’t do that to [Y/N]!” A tiny voice shouted, and Zalgo turned towards the marble staircase with a cocked brow. A faceless twig was shouting at him. How peculiar.
“And why not? Small child? Hm? Because you care for it? This creature?”
“Yes! [Y/N] is our friend! You can’t hurt them like that! It’s not right!” The skinny boy stomped right up to the snaggle toothed demon with his fists clenched.
“You’ll be a bloody problem when you’re older, won’t you?”
“HEY!” Slender side stepped to look at his younger brother while keeping the demon king in his peripheral. Offender had found his prized baseball bat, and a winning courageous snarl that was sure to make Zalgo sprint back to his palace. Or, that’s that he thought he looked like. But really, Offender just looked like a Chihuahua that had too much kibble.
“How many children did this wench have?” The demon hissed through his teeth. Meanwhile, you groaned, failing to get up against your shaking arms. You felt way too heavy, and it wasn’t just from the pain and weakness taking over.
Small hands were already pushing an appendage of the chandelier off of your back, and tugging on your shirt to pull you to the safety of the cupboard under the stairs. And thanks to your late reaction, you almost met with a baseball between the eyes, but Slender pulled you down before you met with another terrible fate.
A loud curse came from Zalgo, and you watched him shrink down and claw at his bruising face. Offender was standing in front of the pantry door with astonishment at what he just done.
You fisted the wall light on the wall adjecent to the stairs and turned. Zalgo, a fierce, 8 foot demonic entity was shrinking down to at least five foot. The clothes he was wearing absorbed his figure, and some nasty looking abscesses plagued his greasy looking face. You were surprised the grease on his face didn’t float to the surface of the tears drifting down his cheeks.
“I can’t just believe I got beat up by an edgy fucking demon teenager.”
“I’LL BE BACK! YOU JUST WAIT!” You didn’t wait to hear his choked sobs, the kids were ushered into the small cavity of the stairwell and you managed to bite through the pain to lodge the gears to the door with a broom handle in case the to demons decided to take revenge early.
The children settled down against you, and all turned quiet.
***
"What in God's name-" Mother heaved a shocked gasp, her leather bag fell onto the crackled and displaced marble beneath her perched black heels. "Where are they?!" Her curls bounced as her sigh frantically flashed around the foyer of her beloved home. "Where are my children?!" She cried out, picking up the hem of her dress and running towards the bunker, away from the cubby under the marble staircase. The antique chandelier her great-great-uncle crafted with his bare hands, lay shattered in a million pieces on the stairs.
"Boys?!" She called out. "BOYS!"
"Momma?" A small voice surfaced over the waves of a mother's panic, and Mother walked back into the foyer, meeting the bare face of her beloved eldest as the secret door of the stairwell grinded open..
"Oh, Slender, thank God!" Her heels clicked and shattered against the broken marble when running over to meet her child. Slender only sported scrapes and scratches on his porcelain skin.
You, however, looked much, much worse. Every part of your puny, human body was screaming in pain. Your broken collar bone couldn't get much worse with a watercolor themed bruise, and you didn't even want to look at your bleeding legs or bruised face.
All to protect these little brats you so dearly love.
"Come here, my boys." Mother whispered, picking up Slender with a snake-like appendage and holding him closer to her.
Splendor nuzzled closer into your good shoulder, and Trender didn't budge from hugging your thigh. Offender, however, was huddled under your left arm, refusing to loosen his grasp around his baseball bat as his shoulders bobbed with choked sobs.
“Thank you, human, thank you so much for protecting my children.” And even with no face to express, her tone was eternally grateful.
"Does this mean I get a bonus paycheck?"

Like a Shadow in the Night
She was here to study the dead lord's library. She was not supposed to pay any mind to the imprisoned dark mage. He, however, did not agree.
Crossposted on ao3 and ff.net
_______________
The flames of the candles flickered in the air as she moved through the room, floorboards creaking, shadows dancing around her. The storm outside was raging, gathering its strength for the night, shaking the walls of the old mansion. It seemed alive, the wind crawling through every niche, every nook, rattling the roof, moving curtains, howling around every corner.
Outside, she knew, the Elite Guard was having a tough night in the wind, the rain, the hail. Lightning flashed in the sky, lighting the room for a brief moment before deafening thunder pierced her ears. Through the stained windows, massive dark silhouettes bowed to the powers of the sky, small twigs and branches occasionally hitting the building. A gust of hail splattered against the glass.
She was glad she didn’t have to be out there right now, guarding every entrance, every square of the perimeter. Instead, she was up here, listening to the unfortunate moods of nature as she sat down at the small table and placed the candelabra next to the pile of old leather-bound books she wanted to take a look at.
From time to time, she could hear a distant humming, the clang of something being dragged over metallic bars, or the sound of an object hitting a wall. She didn’t spare it much attention, for she was here to check out the library of a fallen lord, not to deal with the imprisoned mage. His magic didn’t work in here, anyway. The late former inhabitant had made sure to secure the entire place and adjacent grounds against any form of magic. He’d seen himself too safe for too long, though, and when he went on a stroll through the woods, one of the witches he’d had hunted by a local band of anti-magic veterans had made short work of him.
Now, all the writings and ancient scrolls he’d collected throughout his life and passion for witch hunting could come in handy for the Elite Guard and their fight in the looming war between the Dark Forces and the King’s Guard. And since she was an expert in the field, the Guard had sent her in here to do some research.
Fiddling with the long blonde braid hanging over her shoulder, she skimmed a few paragraphs on the history of the Shadow Clan, spotting nothing she didn’t already know. Maybe this book wasn’t what she’d been looking for, the information it contained seemed to be too basic to tell her anything new. After carefully flipping through a couple more chapters, she placed it aside and opened the next book, a small one with yellowing pages and paling ink. It was written in tiny, cursive handwriting and she had to bring her face closer to decipher anything. She let out a curse at the little light her candles could provide her, hoping the storm would let up soon so someone could repair the giant chandeliers hanging from the high ceilings in every room. Or maybe they could just fetch her a few torches, but every person in the proximity of the mansion was indispensable from their current job. She sighed. The candles would have to do.
A few hours passed, the storm kept howling and her head began to grow heavy. She had to blink away the tiredness and concentrate on the pages, the words starting to swim before her eyes.
“Doesn’t that get boring after a while?” She jumped, accidentally ripping part of the page she had just been about to turn.
There, in the doorway, leaning lazily against the frame, was a young man. His clothes were dirty and torn. The mop of wild hair on his head was hanging into his face, glowing auburn in the spare light. Impossibly green eyes were watching her and a shudder ran down her spine at the intensity. She felt like prey under that gaze.
“How- how did you get out?” Alarmed, she stood, holding the candelabra in front of her as if it would actually be of help, would he decide to attack her.
He shrugged, taking a bite from a bread roll she realized he must have taken from the basket of food she’d brought and placed in the kitchen, for herself and for the guards after a shift change. Which, she reminded herself with a gulp, wouldn’t be for at least another hour. And even if there wasn’t a storm raging right now, nobody would hear her screams from inside the mansion.
He chewed and raised an eyebrow at her defensive stance. “Relax, I’m not going to do anything to you.” When she didn’t move, he took a few slow steps towards her, a wicked grin forming on his face. “What, do you not trust me?”
She didn’t dare leave him out of her sight for one second as he started to stroll around the room, ran his fingertips over dusty surfaces, gaze wandering over the bookshelves lining the walls, the spiderwebs, the windows, and finally, her. She felt trapped, although he wasn’t standing between her and the door anymore. She could make a run for it. But what would that do? He’d escaped his prison; she didn’t know what else he could do.
“How did you get out?” she repeated.
He was tall but skinny, maybe she had a chance of overpowering him, if needed. But something told her she shouldn’t underestimate him. It had taken the Elite Guard years to track him down, months to finally trap him, with the help of a royal knight disguised as a trader who’d been able to get close enough and backstab him at the last minute. Hundreds of men had died in an attempt to catch who they called the Shadowbringer. Others called him the Night Fury. Offspring of Lightning and Death itself. If she didn’t know about this place’s securities against magic, she’d have suspected the storm was his doing.
He sneered. “They think all I am is because of my magic. They think they take that away from me and I am nothing more than an empty vessel.” He fished something out of his pocket that looked suspiciously like a lock pick, twirled it between his fingers and put it away again. “But I’m not stupid.” He spoke with a calm, collected voice that could have fooled her if she didn’t know better. There was a dangerous power behind that voice and she got chills from the way his eyes drifted over her body. “Meredith, isn’t it?”
She didn’t answer, but the twitch of her mouth and slight widening of her eyes revealed her surprise. “Yeah, I thought so. The guards are arrogant enough to think themselves above me when they talk right next to me, like I’m incapable of listening or thinking just because they have me locked up– and, and some kind of… of power over me.” He was gesticulating at nothing in particular. Something in his eyes turned dark as he regarded her. “What about you, Meredith? Do you think you’re mightier than me because you’re collecting knowledge on how to defeat me?”
The hairs on her arms stood up at the implication that, even though he was at the Guard’s mercy at the moment, he could still defeat – kill – them all. She gathered her words and her voice back from the pit of her stomach. “I think you’re supposed to be in your cell right now.”
Like a shark sensing blood in the water, he heard the slight tremble in her voice, smirking at her. From his other pocket, he produced an apple – the red one she’d personally picked from the market this morning – and tossed it into the air a couple times, catching it with ease every time. He might be distracted enough, she thought, maybe she could formulate some kind of plan, or, or…
“I’m supposed to be many things right now.” He approached the desk and she instinctively took a step backwards, clutching the candelabra that her knuckles turned white. He laughed, low and deep and alluring. She gulped, heart hammering in her chest. In the back of her mind, she saw the field of dead bodies, saw the black skin, the shadows that had gorged themselves on their lives, eyes milky and gray and dead–
“Don’t come any closer!” Her voice was definitely trembling now, along with her hand. Molten wax ran down the brass candleholder.
Unimpressed, he put the apple down on a corner of the desk, on top of a pile of notes on alchemy. Idly flipping through a few sheets, he rolled his eyes. “I told you, I’m not going to hurt you.” When she still didn’t relax, he waved at her tight grip. “And will you finally put that thing away? I’m not a vampire.”
She did. She put it on the desk, not because she trusted him, but because she would burn her skin from the wax if she kept shaking like that. She didn’t move her hand away from it, though. Just in case.
“Wh-what do you want?”
“From you?” He looked up from the page he was reading. “Oh, nothing, really. I just like to get out of my lovely cell once in a while and roam this place. It has lots and lots of secret paths and hiding places, did you know that?” He raised his chin and nodded at the chandelier above them. “A little extravagant for my taste, though.”
Cocking her head, she regarded him, curiosity taking over. “Why don’t you just leave?”
He glanced at her, again with the single raised brow. “Sure, and then I’ll play a game of tag with your royal guard friends out there.”
She frowned, not quite buying that argument. Surely, if he wanted, he could find a way to escape. Maybe he was just putting on an act and he wasn’t as powerful as he made himself appear? No, she didn’t believe that. He must have a different plan in mind – if only she could figure it out, figure him out…
Suddenly, that wicked grin was back on his face, and before she could react, he stepped close to her, so very close. She froze, her breath hitched, the warmth of another body almost tangible. He leaned in so that their noses were almost brushing, his magical green eyes trained to hers, locking her in place. A swoop went through her stomach and her heart was beating so loud, she was sure he could hear it. She swallowed when she felt her body tingle at the proximity. Not now, not here… Concentrate… Steeling herself, she pushed these feelings away.
“Or maybe you could help me. Pretty thing like you should be able to distract the guards for a few minutes…” His fingers lightly touched her wrist, trailed up her arm, leaving maddening electricity in its wake. Dammit…
“Or I could make you…” From one second to the other, his face hardened, something dark glossing over his eyes, his hands gripping her arms so tightly it hurt. A short, terrified cry escaped her and he leaned ever closer to her instinctively retreating form, but there was no way to escape, he held her firmly in his grasp. “It would be so easy,” he whispered into her ear and a shiver like a cold shower overcame her entire body. Wow… Through all her emotions, admiration crept towards the surface, and she let it hover there. As long as it didn’t break through her mask…
Ostensibly satisfied with her reaction, he pulled away from her, dangerously unpredictable smirk back in place. With a heart pounding for several reasons, she watched him pick up his – her – apple, toss it into the air one more time, and make towards the door. “If you need me,” he called back without turning his head, “I’ll be in the shadows.”
A few moments after he’d left, the life rushed back into her veins, her knees wobbled and she collapsed into her chair.
“And scene!”
As the lights went back on, someone came to blow out the candles, people started clapping and cheering and slowly, the crowd around her came back into focus. And with this change of atmosphere, Meredith turned back into Astrid.
From around the corner, Hiccup sauntered in, the wicked Shadowbringer grin morphed back into that gap-toothed smile she liked so much.
“I think we really got it this time!” she heard Gary call from his director’s chair, but Astrid barely noticed. She held up her hand for a high-five and when Hiccup accepted it with an excited whoop, the tingles were back in full force. This time, she didn’t try to push them away.
“Fuck, Hiccup!” She laughed and lightly shoved his arm. “I was actually scared back there; you were so amazing!”
An adorable blush spread on his cheeks. “Thanks. Not bad yourself.”
Someone shouted, “Early lunch, everybody!”, and she immediately caught Hiccup’s gaze.
“Lunch in your trailer?” he asked in a low voice, a secret, suggestive glimmer in his eyes. She nodded, lips tingling in anticipation.
“Meet you there in ten.”

A fic commission for @laskulls.
Inquisitor Hal Lavellan has a strange dream, in which he is forced to come to some difficult realizations about his life, as well as his relationship with Solas. This takes place during the Inquisition, before What Pride had Wrought.
(Thank you so much, laskull, for giving me the opportunity to write such a glorious creature as Hal. It was a pleasure to work with you. <3 -gala)
Absinthe
Some rooms are fit for Chantry sisters, their golds enveloping and made for storybook days in which childhood is something to cherish. Holding candles among the women and the people who love you—no matter who they are, you are protected from the wilds, the masked evils, the witches who mourn the death of the simple days, when children came into their ovens on the promise of sweets, of their own volition. Some rooms are wintry and sweet, cozy with the scent of balsam. People come and they go, all a family, and even when one is not there, the others know that he will soon return. Everything seems to be made of heavy, soft fabrics, lush but uncomplicated in the way they wrap you tight.
This was a different kind of room, however. Here, there were wolves.
There was red smoke, high in the corners of the ceiling, as if filled with eyes, and it watched him enter. Hal thought he had invited only twenty, maybe thirty to the party, but at some point, the guest list must have gotten away from him, as this was a party of hundreds. Maybe thousands. The chateau was big, and the chandeliers were beautiful, so who knew? There were tables and chairs, all of a cold, steely wood painted blue or painted white. Huge cakes in the shapes of summer animals—a bear, a lion, a serpent. They smelled divine, but they were untouched, as the fountains of champagne and the grand silver bowls of yellow pills, and potions in the punch, spiky and sweet with remorse and seduction.
Everything untouched and yet everyone around him seemed to be drunk, and getting drunker, and they embraced and hung off of one another like saplings. Some of the women seemed made of sunlight as they touched him. They were warm, and they whispered sweet, melancholy nothings with their breath that smelled of absinthe.
Hal had never tried absinthe. He liked alcohol in small quantities, though he found the effect dizzying. In this one simple sense, moderation suited him. But absinthe—was that an alcohol, or was that a drug? He couldn’t be sure. He knew people who’d had it before. It was a common drink in Orlais, and once he had been close to Solas who’d been sipping it out of a silver cap at the Winter Palace, and his breath smelled like black licorice after. Hal longed to taste it on his tongue. The effect put him into a daydream. But can you daydream past your regular dreaming? Nobody knows for sure, and so now he was looking around the party, looking for Solas. If this was his party, then Solas had to be there, somewhere. Didn’t he?
Their masks looked like their faces, but their faces looked like their masks. Cole had said something like this—once. Sometimes Hal got lost in the haves and have nots, that which was and that which he only imagined. He found himself at the center of a small circle of people—Orlesians. The word was thick and pink, and he could hear it best in Sera’s voice. These Fereldans and their crass accents, he thought. A man dressed as a fanged beast holding a heavy glass approached Hal then and put his mask back. He was handsome and flaxen, Orlesian and human. He was a great big man, even bigger than Hal, and he had to lean down a little to put his voice in Hal’s ear.
“There are women here, young Inquisitor. They will give you whatever you want.”
Hal blushed and tsk’ed the man. “You know better,” he said. But did he? The man seemed familiar somehow, like one of the noble shits who liked to strut around Val Royeaux, flashing his jewelry. Hal was enchanted, but Solas, he knew, was somewhere. “I must go.”
“Wait,” said the Orlesian. He held Hal by the wrist, gently, but sure. He handed him a glass of something very bright and green. “For you.”
“Is it absinthe?” said Hal.
The Orlesian smiled. His whole mouth seemed to turn up. His face was, at times, rocky. Other times, it was smooth and Hal longed to touch it though he could not locate the reason. “No, no,” said the Orlesian. No, no. “Nothing of the sort, Inquisitor. Look closer.”
Hal peered deep into the glass. He felt his head fill with mystery. He squinted at the man. “What is it?”
“Chartreuse,” said the Orlesian. “Smell it. Like plants, no?”
Hal thought it smelled like metal. “It must be shit,” he said, and he smirked. “I smell blood.”
The man enjoyed this. The boy was catching on. “I have seen foxes run wild in all of Orlais, Inquisitor,” he said. “None run as wild as you.”
“Is that a theory? Is this your guesswork?”
“I do not wish to impose,” said the man, even as he did. He softened, wiped his forehead with a handkerchief. He was not a bad man, but he was…motivated. He drew closer, and his breath reeked of cold. “But it is a theory, indeed, one I would hasten to test.”
“In what context?” said Hal.
“This,” said the man.
The man leaned forward, and he kissed him. At first, Hal felt warmth. Invigorated, he let go, and the feeling was good. This was a feeling he could learn to recognize in the long chilly nights of Skyhold. Somebody to take him close? Remind him where he came from. Like a tree that grew up and up until it forgot its roots. They were down there, somewhere. Perhaps an anchor? Then he could go down and be reminded of what they looked like.
But then he heard the cooing of the women, and a strange noise from overhead, and he knew that it was a mistake. This was not right. Clouds gathered to the sound of crumpling paper. But wasn’t this indoors? He felt repulsed. He pushed the man away.
“I’m sorry,” said Hal. “I can’t.”
“Don’t go,” said the man.
But no matter how Hal looked, he couldn’t see the man’s face anymore. His back had turned. Every angle he approached, it was only the man’s back, and then he knew that it was wrong. All of it. This man did not want him. He wanted a fox. So Hal reached for a glass of champagne to dull the edges. A pretty girl had passed, a Dalish elf holding a silver tray, and she seemed nice and knowing toward him.
“Ser Solas waits,” she said, smiling. She was warm, like autumn, and beautiful and young. Just like him. Her smile was pink. “Do I know you?”
“I’m not sure,” said Hal. “You said he waits? Where?”
“Outside,” she said. “In the garden. Are you sure we don’t know each other?”
“Many people think they know me,” said Hal. “They assume.”
“I think I know you from childhood,” she said. She held out her hand. In it, she held a twig. “Mahalen. You used to light the barn on fire.”
This almost made him laugh as he took the twig. What was she talking about? He found his legs with her. She was familiar, in any case. A Dalish girl, but a servant? This did not make sense. She said her name was River.
“River?” he said. “That is your name?”
“Follow me,” she said.
She took his hand.
They went down a long corridor that he could not remember. Candelabras on all sides. This was a chateau he had purchased, with riches he had earned. He should have known this hallway. He should have decorated. There were cobwebs in the corner that disgusted him.
What the fuck was this reverie, anyway?  He longed to get out of there. He followed the girl with a feeling like she was his sister. He wanted her to stop and to give him something, like a hug, or perhaps a flower. They continued down the corridor until they found an old gate made of brass that stretched all the way up to the sky.
“Through there,” she said. And then she told him a secret. It was the secret of his whole life. He would wake up soon and never remember.
Beyond the gate, one after another after another, he saw butterflies. There were thousands. Like onlookers, and the sky was gray. It had begun to snow. Hal saw him.
He wore a strange mask—that of a raven, and he was very tall. And yet, somehow, Hal knew that it was Solas. Standing alone, leaning against the fountain, debonair in a silver tuxedo. Crushed with relief, Hal could feel his heart beating in his throat.
“Solas,” he said.
Hands in his pockets, Solas straightened up as Hal approached.
Hal, still holding that glass of champagne from the Dalish girl named River, glanced down at his shoes. He could feel Solas watching him, though the mask was deceiving. When he was right up close, Hal offered him the glass of champagne.
Solas lifted the mask, pushed it back so that Hal could see. It was him. Only taller, and more beautiful than before. Solas took the champagne and nodded in gratitude. Then, he sipped and surveyed the butterfly garden.
“I heard you had a run-in with a wolf,” he said, glancing. “Are you all right?”
“Yes,” said Hal, breathless. “It was nothing. The man was caught over his head. I stopped him.”
Solas smirked into his champagne. “I see.”
“What are you doing out here all alone?” said Hal. “You should come inside.”
“Would you like me to come inside?”
“Certainly,” said Hal. “I don’t seem to know anybody else.”
“You seem to know the serving girl. She is Dalish, is she not?”
Hal glanced over his shoulder. She was nowhere to be seen. “Her name is River,” he said. “I think she might be from another time.”
“I prefer the garden,” said Solas, confident. “The butterflies flock to this place, as if in worship. Spring is near. I can sense your uneasiness, Mahalen. I wish you would tell me the truth.”
“The truth about what?”
“About the wolf inside.”
“Inside?”
“Inside the chateau.”
Hal swallowed some air. Solas was very cavalier and very upright, as a man. He had never been taller than Hal, not until this moment, and yet, for some reason, it seemed he had always been taller than Hal and suddenly, Hal found himself wondering once again at reality and everything that had been stolen from him. “I’m all right,” he said. “Though I could use some comfort, in any case.” He smiled. He tried to appear demure.
“Your drama suits the event,” said Solas, seeing right through him. “I missed you a great deal. The butterflies are pretty, but they are terrible with conversation.”
Hal laughed at this, low, and he blushed hard. The snow was gathering on his eyelashes, though he could barely feel the cold at all. He felt Solas’s hand instead, big and warm inside his own, and very sudden, but casual. When he looked down at their fingers, interlaced, Hal felt his heart grow and burst and the warmth of it catch in his throat. He looked up at Solas, and he said, “Is this on purpose?”
“Of course,” said Solas. Very cool, unconcerned. “I do very little that is not on purpose, Mahalen. Though I wish you would remove your mask.”
“I am not wearing a mask.”
“Not anymore,” said Solas.
Hal looked up at him then, and he felt protected. He did not need a mask here, and Solas lifted his chin to get a better look. Hal could feel his callused palms, wondered what he could have done to make them so rough like that. A mage with rough hands? Hal’s hands were soft. Hal’s hands were untouched until now.
“May I?” said Solas.
“May you what?”
“Kiss you,” he said. “Now that you have removed your mask. Of course, if the answer is no, please just say so. I take only that which is offered to me, and freely given.” He was so sure of himself. So strong, earnest in his request.
Hal shuddered, and his spine whispered away into the snowy landscape.
“Yes,” he said, a whisper.
His mouth was dry. Solas made a small smile, relieved, and then he leaned in and closed his eyes. It seemed to last forever, this moment in-between, but then their mouths touched in a quiet bit of undoing. It was everything, and it was all the world and time come to a halt for Hal. The snowflakes stood still in the air like exploding stars, and a red butterfly perched on Solas’s shoulder as if in possession. Hal felt the kiss deepen and then fade. They parted, slowly. Solas smiled down at him, satisfied and warm, tucking the hair behind Hal’s ear. The touch was slight, but Hal could feel it in his bones.
“It’s a beautiful day,” said Solas then as he glanced around, regarding the greenery where it pressed into the snow. His hand still lingered there, at the cut of Hal’s jaw, and he had tasted like black licorice, thought Hal. Black licorice. Absinthe. At last.
But the sky was coming down. Hal could hardly hear him now as the snow kicked up, or was it the butterflies? Maybe he’d never know, and in any case, he could feel the sunlight melting through the high windows, making a home in his bedsheets where he slept alone.
“When did we get home?” he said. “Solas?”
“Yes, vhenan?”
Awake.
Hal opened his eyes in the quiet of his Skyhold bedroom. It was past dawn, and the ice was melting off the windows like a prelude to summer. He touched his fingers to his mouth, waited for the reminder. Had it been the Fade?
No.
His heart sank. He knew in an instant that it had been simple dreaming, that the man Solas, who he loved desperately but with a kind of abandon that had begun to burn too bright into the void, was not here. Unrequited. Somebody was knocking on the door. This business of his, lurking in the shadows, beckoning him further and further away from the place he came from, it startled him back to reality.
It was Josephine, she said through the door, there to sketch out a social affair with some smug Comtesse from the Imperial Court. He was supposed to be excited, and so that is how he would force himself to appear, but in the space between the wolven specter of his dreams and a kiss from the lover who simply would not love him back, Hal had got lost. Could a dream be so telling, or the face of things to come? He hoped so, and yet he did not. Like all coins, this one had two sides. He pushed the hair off his face, rumpled the expensive cotton of the sheets. One thousand thread count, imported by his own personal request from Val Royeaux. Hal remembered the day they arrived in the mail, wrapped in brown paper and twine, and how he told Solas, all too excited. Solas, however, did not even glance up from his book.
Sheets, is it? he said. They’d been having coffee in the garden, were sitting at a little table with the Chantry sisters showing the children how to plant seeds in the soil.
Not just sheets, said Hal. One thousand threads.
I once slept on sheets spun by Antivan silk worms, he said, though he offered no context as he turned the page. Their threads are so small as to be innumerable. I itched by morning.
What does that mean? said Hal, growing impatient.
Spend your days counting thread, Mahalen, while the surgeons want for gauze in the sick bay. He glanced up. He smirked, but he was very serious. I think you hear me. Do you hear me, lethal’lin?
Lethal’lin. It would be a long time before Hal heard him. For now, Josephine had ceased her knocking and slipped a note under the door. Hal dug his fists into his eyes. Time to wake up. The Comtesse was expecting him at noon.

Lake House Interior Design Ideas
Grace Hill Design worked with the homeowners and Michael Paul Design Build to design the Dutch Colonial style home which has an East Coast Hamptons feel. The homeowners wanted a classic, casual lake home to accommodate their active lifestyle. The home has a lot of fresh crisp surfaces like white shiplap, enameled cabinetry and marble countertops, so we wanted to add warmth with reclaimed wood ceiling features, wide-planked rustic floors and antiqued brass light fixtures. The white oak wood hood in the kitchen matches the natural wood counter stools made of nautical rope. Those, along with the open shelving give a casual, inviting “pull up a chair” kind of feel that the homeowners wanted when entertaining friends and family. The light floors kept every room feeling very coastal and the white oak is extremely durable for their family of five.
All of the lighting, furniture, rugs, artwork and accessories all came from Grace Hill.
Have a great time, my friends and make sure to pin your favorite interior design ideas!
  Lake House Interior Design Ideas
“When asked to describe the overall design style, the homeowners said “they want a happy house”. We worked with a color palette of sky blues, navy, pops of raspberry and reds along with a whole lot of white to give the house a fresh, happy lake-y feel. The blue accent color used on the Front Door, Dutch Door and Laundry Room cabinetry was custom mixed on site. We blended some paints that we were testing until we found the perfect “happy blue” to be featured in several rooms. That thread of blues makes the open concept floor plan flow well.”

Ultimate Guide to Choosing a Chandelier
Tumblr media
Chic French country Small 6 light rustic white chandelier
Chandeliers are more than just a way to illuminate a room. They add style and become part of the home decor. Like any decorative piece, the right modern chandelier can make a big difference in the look and feel of a room. A large or ornate chandelier will overwhelm a small living space, and a small, simple one will not look right in a formal dining room. Here's how to choose the best lighting for your home.
Choosing Chandeliers:
Determine the Correct Diameter
Tumblr media
Chic French country 12 light rustic white chandelier
Measure the length and width of the room in feet, and add those two numbers together. For example, if your room is 8 feet wide by 12 feet long, the sum is 20 feet. Change that number to inches and you will get a number that works for the diameter of your chandelier. In this case, a chandelier with a diameter of 20 inches would work well in an 8-foot by 12-foot room. For a dining room, the chandelier should have a diameter around 12 inches less than the table is wide. It’s always better to have a chandelier that is slightly too big than too small.
Measure for the Length
The taller the ceiling, the taller the chandelier can be. A foyer chandelier should hang about 7 feet off the floor, measuring from the bottom of the chandelier. For a chandelier suspended above a dining room table, there should be around 30 inches from the bottom of the chandelier to the tabletop for a dining room with an 8-foot ceiling.
Decide Where to Hang Your Chandelier
The location will affect the style of home lighting you choose. While most people think of chandeliers in dining rooms or a foyer, there are many other places you can hang a chandelier. Hang one with a dimmer switch over your bed in a master bedroom and turn it down to candlelight level for a romantic feel. Install a mini chandelier over a claw-foot tub in your bathroom for a touch of glamour. Consider installing mini chandeliers over a large kitchen island instead of standard pendant lights for a chic look.
Pick a Style That Matches the Room
Tumblr media
Orb Cage Small 4 Light Antique Brass Finished Chandelier
The chandelier should complement, not detract from, the theme of the room. A chandelier in a little girl’s room, for example, could have colorful crystals dangling from it. A chandelier in a rustic dining room might be made with twigs or faux antlers. For a shabby chic room, try a chandelier with a distressed black or white finish and antique glass sconce shades.
Adjust the Height of the Chandelier
Use pliers to remove links in the chain and coil up the extra electrical wire in the ceiling housing. If the chandelier does not have a chain, see if it has a sliding adjustment on the cord. Most chandeliers without chains have a sliding mechanism that allows you to double up the cord and shorten the length.

Beautiful Homes of Instagram: Canada
Happy Thanksgiving, my wonderful Canadian readers! To celebrate this special day, I couldn’t have had a better guest! I am truly honored to be featuring Kaitlyn Harris from decorating__life on our “Beautiful Homes of Instagram” series. Kaitlyn lives in Calgary, Canada and you might even remember seeing this stunning home on the blog before. Keep reading and you’ll understand better as this homeowner explains below…
Hi everyone, my name is Kaitlyn Harris and I’m an interior designer based in Calgary, Canada (@decorating__life). Thank you so much for the opportunity to share my home on this amazing blog; I’m honored and excited to be part of such an amazing resource for the design community.
First let me start by saying I’m very grateful and fortunate to own a home that is well known among the design community – in fact, it’s even been featured as a previous Design Inspiration here on Home Bunch! The home was originally designed and built by a local builder called Veranda Estate Homes, and they lived in it from 2011 to 2017. I feel strongly that when a builder designs and constructs their own personal home, it’s probably done to the highest standards possible; this house was no exception. The attention to detail in the home was above anything we had seen in our search, and we instantly fell in love with it.
My husband, Steve, and I built our previous house from the ground up before our two sweet kids – Winnie (age 4) and Cash (age 2) – came along; so we began our home search by looking for empty land where we could build a customized acreage property better suited to our current life. However, after seeing limited options and facing challenging conditions during our search (hiking through feet of snow!) we decided to look at existing properties. We came across our would-be home: a stunning two acre property with over 7,000 square feet of developed space. The home features six bedrooms, five bathrooms, a 1,400 square foot garage, gym, 650 plus bottle wine bar and plenty of marble – just how I like it!
On our first tour of the home, we knew the layout and design was perfect for us, however, we could see some opportunities to improve on existing spaces and tailor them to our needs. Steve works in ecommerce, developing and growing online businesses. I do contract interior design work, when I’m not busy being a mom. We needed a house that was very specific to our lifestyle – lots of space was a must since the entire family is home every day. It was also important we had functional workspaces, in addition to extra usable rooms we could sneak away to for a moment of peace.
We purchased the home in the dead of winter, and moved in the following summer in 2017. The last year has been a fun process making the home our own and reimagining various spaces to fit our unique lifestyle. I had seen this home before on social media, and never dreamed it would become my own. My husband and I worked very hard to achieve this goal, and often the realization that this is our home still hits me – I love it so much!
In the photos below I’ll recap some of the spaces original to the home (with my decorating touch applied!), then explore some of the bigger changes we’ve made since moving in. Enjoy, and thank you once again for allowing us to show you our home – we’re truly honored!

  Beautiful Homes of Instagram: Canada
From the moment we drove up the long driveway, we were in love! This home has a very grand, but inviting curb appeal with large double iron front doors and a front veranda.

The driveway continues past the front door to a large parking pad (we keep trying to think of a fancier name for it!) and the four car garage. Step inside…

Dining Room
This room underwent a major overhaul immediately after moving in. The original dining room felt dark and heavy with tons of wood, and we prefer a brighter / lighter style. With a few coats of paint (including the ceiling) and the addition of a beautiful marble top dining table, the room now feels inviting and elegant. The marble top table is a great tie-in to the kitchen and butler’s pantry.

Great Room
This room is probably the most shared and pinned photo of this home – it was on my Pinterest board years before we owned the property. The great room features beautiful wood beams, a large stone fireplace and mantle, and our favorite feature: an oversized window bench.
Window-seat
The bench is one of our most common family hang out spots, and has large drawers underneath for toy storage.

Mudroom
We’ve left the original mudroom intact with no major changes. We followed the advice of our realtor, who told us to always put your kids cubbies furthest from the door – there’s nothing worse than a toddler sitting on the floor to take off their shoes while you have your arms full of groceries!

Our previous home had an upstairs bonus room where the kids watched TV and played with toys. Previous Home
Cashton’s bedroom in our old house was one of my most popular social posts, and it’s widely shared on Pinterest / Instagram – you’ll see most of the same furniture. The custom made “pipe” shelf was sourced from a local handyman who builds these using unused materials from job sites.
Son’s Bedroom
Cashton’s bedroom had a large hand-painted mural in it that didn’t fit our design plan for the room. Due to the thickness of the paint and the ridges it created, we had to have the wall skim coated and repaired to achieve a flat paintable surface. The whole room was repainted in a steely blue.

Daughter’s Bedroom
The original owner of this home had two boys, so this bedroom required a major overhaul. Like most little girls, my daughter loves pink and princesses, and the existing wallpaper, paint and window coverings we’re not going to work for her.
Immediately upon move-in we stripped the wallpaper and repainted the whole room a soft pink color. Custom drapery was added above the window bench – which we repurposed from our last home – I made all of the paper flowers on the wall by hand, and we stapled those to the wall around her canopy.

The dresser is originally from IKEA, and we added the custom gold molding details (from “Overlays”) to ensure it was cohesive with the room.

One of our first priorities in this home was to brighten up the master bedroom with new paint. We also plan to add some architectural details to the walls / ceiling in the future (such as paneling or beams). The window looks out to a pond frequented by moose and deer.

His Office
Function was key in my husband’s office. In order to effectively work from home, he needs a space away from the “action” of the kitchen / family room, lots of natural light and plenty of storage. This office is located right off the front entrance, with a perfect view of the driveway and gate. It has built in cabinets and we converted one side into a foam-lined recording booth that he uses for webinars and training videos; the desk was purchased from the original sellers. I made him hide three additional computer monitors for the sake of this photo shoot!

Entertainer’s Dream
My husband has a large scotch collection as well, which we keep outside the wine room in a back-lit mirrored shelving area. The bar is outstanding for entertaining and storage, with a built in TV and our own house cocktail menu for guests to choose from.
Cabinetry is Alder.
Brass Hardware: Pulls & Knobs.
Wine Room
This amazing 650+ bottle wine room and bar is definitely a focal point in the basement. While not big wine collectors originally, our passion for it has grown and the wine room is now well stocked.

Floor is heated concrete.
Gym
We always loved the idea of having a dedicated gym in our house, however our homes in the city never had the space. This gym helps us avoid driving on treacherous winter roads, and it’s a good escape when you need to blow off some steam. The mounted TV is great for watching spin classes or YouTube workout videos – it’s like having a built-in trainer.
Guest Bedroom
We love to entertain, and after a night of games and wine we see lots of overnight guests. This room was completely overhauled with new paint, a large TV and comfortable amenities for guests. We keep the drawers stocked with overnight supplies so an advanced reservation is never required.

Unwind
With such a short summer, we spend most warm nights outside enjoying the peace and quiet; the outdoor fireplace sees plenty of action, and the kids enjoy watching a show while mom and dad relax.
Decor
I designed and drafted our outdoor dining table, which was then custom built by my father-in-law – it has a composite decking top, which is incredibly durable for our harsh winters. There is also a large seating area opposite the dining area which is not pictured.

Invaluable Insights To Selecting The Finest Decorative Craft Chandeliers
By Catherine Sanders
Acquiring a lighting fixture is a wonderful investment as it changes the feel and appearance of a room. There are vast choices in the market and finding the right match for your home decor and style can be an arduous task. Due diligence should be observed to pick the finest Decorative Craft Chandeliers to accentuate your fittings and architecture. It is judicious to keep the points below in mind when purchasing these fixtures. Clients should seek fixtures whose style is in line with the overall decor of the given room. A good chandelier should appear as an extension of a particular space. Lusters made of twigs are more expedient for a room that has a country appearance. For a modern dining space, you may select a gasolier that has crystals and drum shades. You should strive to acquire a style that does not undermine the overall theme of space. Gasoliers are available in diverse sizes hence you may easily find one whose size is best fitted for the intended space. If you buy a very large chandelier, the decor may be overwhelmed and the excess light could be discomfort for your guests. For an extremely small fixture, the light will be insufficient hence the look of your room will be less appealing. The ambiance you wish to create in a given room needs to be taken to account to help you pick a suitable fixture. Color patterns have a considerable impact on the resultant moods hence you must carefully select them. For bedroom gasoliers, you may select those that have a dimming switch which can aid in creating a romantic feel. You may opt for a rustic luster if you wish to create a countryside feel. An online search is essential as this informs you of the various available design options and enhances your ability to make an informed choice. You can also pay a visit to various dealers to see the variety of available chandeliers. This helps you to identify those that match your home decor and meet your panache preferences. There are also various articles that you can browse through to learn about these gasoliers. These chandeliers are made from a wide range of materials including wood and metal. You should think about the hues in your home to select a material that will match up excellently with them. If your room is made of a mix of metals, you may pick a beaded brass chandelier. You may select a design that includes plants if you wish to attain an earthly look. Clients need to evaluate the installation needs of preferred lusters. If your ceiling is considerably low, make sure you hang it high enough to avoid causing any accidents. It must be installed in such a way that it will be the epicenter of attention in the particular room. You must hang it correctly which makes it easy to adjust it when needed. The location where a chandelier is to be fitted can guide you in making the right choice. You need to ensure the luster will balance the visual effect of the space to create the desired look. It must enhance style while upholding the decorative aspect in the given location.

(Note: I am reposting this today because I am not feeling 100%, but I will be back soon with a new post! Thank you, my friends!

  Beautiful Homes of Instagram: Canada
From the moment we drove up the long driveway, we were in love! This home has a very grand, but inviting curb appeal with large double iron front doors and a front veranda.
Front Door
The driveway continues past the front door to a large parking pad (we keep trying to think of a fancier name for it!) and the four car garage. Step inside…

Dining Room
This room underwent a major overhaul immediately after moving in. The original dining room felt dark and heavy with tons of wood, and we prefer a brighter / lighter style. With a few coats of paint (including the ceiling) and the addition of a beautiful marble top dining table, the room now feels inviting and elegant. The marble top table is a great tie-in to the kitchen and butler’s pantry.
Dining Table
Our dining chairs are classic oval backs, with a durable fabric that will withstand family dinners for years to come. We’re still searching for the perfect fabric for drapery in this room.
