Now, I don't know Latin myself, but if you throw "Vigilo. Audio. Opperior." into google translate it translates to "I watch. I listen. I wait." and that feels very relevant.

Especially since the description of the S4 finale is "Vigilo. Audio. Supervenio.", and I believe Supervenio translates to "I come."

So it's fascinating how you can interpret the voices on the tape currently foreshadowing that Elias is just waiting at this point, waiting for his time when he can use Jon to make the entities come into the world.

I don't know if they ever mentioned how much they had planned in advance, but the use of this in the trailer feels very intentional. And it's quite the bit of foreshadowing.

You could make a Tales of pets bracket.

Repede, Rollo, Noishe, all the other pets throughout the series. All the major pets at least.

I did think about that, but I feel like you'd get to a poll between, like, Repede and Rollo, and it just turns into a "are you a cat person or a dog person?" poll.

But I also thought about including NPC dogs, because dogs in Abyss go "bark!" and dogs in Xillia can't be talked to at all, so you can clearly rank the dogs between games.

Isn't there a dog seraph in Zesty...? And there's Little Wolf in Vesperia, which is kind of a dog.

Hello! Just wanna say thank you to you & kyogre-blue (and the anons) for being like the only people I can find that agree that Genshin's storytelling is wack lol I'm surprised how many people praise the writing when it's so confusingly paced and conflicts they bring up don't really go anywhere or the payoff is lackluster. There so much unnecessary dialogue & the last acts of the main story are always such a big rushed mess!

That being said, I wanted to ask if there's any series(game, anime, manga, etc) you'd recommend that does the things genshin wants to do but better, or even just series you'd recommend in general or wish more people knew about!

Hi anon! Sorry for the late response, I have been adding and removing stuff from this list for a few days. I genuinely don't know why people think Genshin is well written - I can understand people thinking it's good in concept and that some of its high concept ideas are interesting, but the actual story itself? Beyond me.

Thank you in return for the validation - the more I see people go on about how great it is the crazier I feel...

As for recs...

The real issue is that Genshin tries to do a LOT of different things, but there aren't a lot of games that do ALL the things Genshin tried to do. That's what makes Genshin stand out, though obviously a lot of what it does do leaves a lot to be desired... I am mostly going to stick to anime/manga/games per your request, but if you like fantasy worlds with lots of lore there's a lot of western high fantasy that might also be your thing.

And you know, these are gonna be subjective recs.

In general, if you're looking for more JRPG fantasy games - Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest and Tales of Franchise are good places to start. They're all self-contained stories and you can easily jump from one entry to another. My experience with anything except Final Fantasy is really spotty, but narrowing it down a bit;

Tales of Vesperia and Tales of Symphonia are generally the most well-regarded Tales of games; they're on my 'to-play' list so I can't rec them personally. I am playing Tales of Berseria (very slowly) and quite enjoying myself, but it's supposed to be pretty different to the rest of the series.

Dragon Quest XI is a very well-regarded entry into the series, and the most recent. It's a fun game with a cute cast; it doesn't do anything particularly exciting and is a very standard 'save the world from the forces of darkness!' plot, but it's very cute and I had a good time.

As an generally well-regarded MMO Final Fantasy 14 probably comes the closest to encapsulating what Genshin offers, though I never got far (no shade to 14; I just don't like MMOs). Apparently the guy that wrote FF16 is also a 14 writer, but I thought FF16's writing sucked so take that with a grain of salt. Actually, FF16's combat reminded me a lot of Genshin too lmao. Lots of waiting for skills to cool down.

Final Fantasies 6, 7 and 9 are generally pretty safe jumping-on points - 7 being the most well-regarded for a reason, though arguments on the 'best Final Fantasy' can get vicious. 15 is also open-world but, uh, I got bored and couldn't finish it.

Final Fantasy Remake, Intergrade and presumably the upcoming Rebirth are very good, I just disagree with some choices made (and every they're not ALL bad choices.) Rebirth will apparently be open-world, but it's not a cheap investment to get them all.

Games that have elements similar to Genshin's;

Legend of Zelda; Breath of the Wild inspired Genshin's open-world and though it's not as pretty, it's certainly more engaging. It's not as story-heavy as Genshin. It handles exploration a lot better in almost all regards, imo.

Bravely Default and/or Octopath Traveller (party-based RPGs with HEAVY party customisation options - if you wish Genshin allowed for more variety/options there. Very different experience, BD is a 'complete party' and OT is '8 separate storylines')

Similarly, if you like character/party building and strategy games in general, while I didn't love the story Fire Emblem Engage was really fun to play. If you want a cute party and story, Fire Emblem Awakening is a pretty solid entry too.

Ace Attorney, if you need to detox after Fontaine's attempts at writing trials. Ace Attorney vs Professor Layton has a batshit ending, but its about witch trials, which is cool.

I'd also tentatively recommend Kingdom Hearts. A game about traveling to different worlds, meeting new people, searching for people that you've lost but still care about despite everything. Very fun hack and slash gameplay from KH2 onwards; iconic villain squad and some of the best (bonus) boss fights in the business, incredible soundtrack and plays around with identity and personhood as concepts in more interesting ways than Genshin does. Clunky and cheesy, but still close to my heart. But yes the worlds are mostly Disney.

Fate/Samurai Remnant is both probably currently the best introduction* to the Fate universe and a good game in it's own right. And if you like series with a fucktonne of lore and world-building that take their own spin on history and mythology, you'll probably like the Nasuverse. The original Fate/Stay Night will be getting an official english release later this year, along with Tsukihime. Witch of the Holy Night is also already out - they're meaty visual novels. FGO walked so that Star Rail could faceplant into the ground, etc etc.

Some general adventure anime/manga;

One Piece Live Action: Surprisingly, I really enjoyed this. You might also enjoy actual One Piece, on the off-chance you haven't already seen it. (maybe that's the more sensible recommendation? I really wish I liked One Piece more than I do) After all this time, Romance Dawn is still my favourite One Piece saga.

Hunter x Hunter is generally just good and fun, though its a bit of a slow start. Finally finished 2011's anime adaptation. It made me cry. Also, the Phantom Troupe are just. So fun. Chrollo my beloved scumbag

Frieren: Beyond Journey's End and Delicious in Dungeon are two adventure anime with extremely different vibes. Though you might already be watching those. Frieren has themes of living longer than your friends and companions, and watching people you care about vanish while you stay young - what it's like to experience that, and how to move on. Delicious in Dungeon is a comedy in a well thought out fantasy world.

Trigun's anime, Trigun's manga and Trigun: Stampede are all very different but similar narratives about a semi-immortal inhuman character traveling across an apocalyptic planet humanity failed to properly settle. I haven't watched the original anime, but the manga and Stampede were both fun.

If you haven't seen Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood yet, rocket that to the top of the list.

I'm currently watching a mid-2000s shonen isekai - Marchen Awakens Romance - with a friend. We're enjoying ourselves so far... at ep 40/ out of 100ish. If it gets bad it's not my fault.

Classic old-school isekai I haven't seen in ages are Inuyasha and Magic Knights Rayearth. Didn't finish InuYasha, actually. Fushigi Yugi is on my to-watch list.

Tsubasa Resevoir Chronicles is a mid 2000s adventure manga that involves a LOT of dimensional travel and found family feels. It gets very mind-screwy by the end and has a sister series partially needed to understand what's going on - xxxHolic, which I also remember liking though it has been a hot minute (over a decade) for both of them. Go manga, not anime. More of a 'alternative to Star Rail' rec, tbh.

I think if you mentioned some specific characters or potential plotlines in Genshin I might be able to offer alternatives? Like, if you liked the House of Hearth as morally grey found family trying to protect Fontaine, I could say you might like Moriarty the Patriot or Bungou Stray Dogs, but a lot of that's gonna be way more subjective than broader fantasy/adventure story recs...

(If you wish Scaramouche had ever been able to confront his creator and his vague allusions to 'having a heart' and personhood/identity were more of a thing - Lies of P! If you liked Diluc but wish he still did anything vigilante-like, you'll probably like... some... Batman media! Depends why you like Diluc! Stuff like that.)

The thing I've watched most recently that I really, really liked was Scott Pilgrim Takes Off. I read the books in high school and revisiting it (and it revisiting itself) was really interesting. The show has some extremely interesting animation choices and generally looks incredible - it's also pretty funny, so there's that. I'd recommend either reading the books or watching the movie first (the entire movie cast returned to voice act Takes Off, actually - and do an incredible job).

I've also been playing a shitton of Castlevania lately. I didn't like the shows very much, but I found myself enjoying the games I got on the Switch store.

Given what you've said about people who work with flesh becoming murderers possibly not being a real statistic, could it be possible it's only a real statistic in the tma universe?

Like, maybe working on the killing floor causing them to develop a connection with the Flesh or another of the animalistic fears, and that leads them to being avatars and killing others.

So it wouldn't be that the killing floor itself does that, it just gives them a connection to a fear, and that connection leads them to being murderers more often than not?

LADY ILLIANA AEGOS (she/her) -> KEEVAN GUERRA (he/him) -> status: many many noble women have fancied sir guerra and illiana is no different. the somewhat “catch” is she feels she has a chance and does her best to flirt with him and make her intentions known whenever the two of them are in a room together. keevan is polite, as she is the step daughter of the current ruler (the grand duke) however he doesn’t feel anything towards her romantically.

DEUX UNDERSHIELD (she/her; one of the mcs) / FORTE SYMPHONIA (he/him one of the mcs) -> status: when they initially meet there’s something like immediate attraction, especially on deux’s end. she’s never met someone so brave and kind and handsome 👀 similarly, forte comes to like deux pretty quickly. her innocence and sweetness as well as her desire to better herself and fight for what’s right are immediately attractive to him. however, he hasn’t made a move as he’s more of an observer first action second (very fitting with being a ranger lol). deux however is too shy.

CLEAR BRIGHTENDALE (he/him; one of the mcs) / FORTE SYMPHONIA -> status: first of all, bi king forte. secondly, forte was actually the first one attracted here; he and clear’s first conversation is the first where he doesn’t feel the pressure of having a certain demeanor. he gets comfortable around him very quickly. clear is also pretty immediately attracted to forte however bc of internalized homophobia + noticing deux likes forte as well makes him back off quickly. but he pines—oh he pines.

MOIRA DEARBORN (she/her) & JAGODA ARTHEA (trans!! he/him) -> status: the two of them are childhood friends and have been together for near a decade lol. their battle chemistry is just as synced as their emotional and physical chemistry. jagoda would do anything for moira and moira cares about him more than anyone else in the world lol.

LORD KIBA LATHSBURY (he/him) / ERYN ARCUS (they/she/he) -> status: eryn and kiba are childhood friends (apart of the same group as moira/jagoda/karenza) and kiba’s had a crush on eryn for years, he’s pretty blatant about it too lol. eryn just loves teasing him but it’s clear that they like him back.

DION UNDERSHIELD (he/him) & FIAMETTA LANTHI (she/her) -> status: strike through bc we’ve reached the first tragedy; fiametta is dead (and it ain’t a spoiler cuz she has been from story start). fia and dion were very close, and her death caused him to spiral deeper into his old grudges and depression. she brightened up his world and it’s much darker to him without her.

ERIK SOORI (he/him) -> DION UNDERSHIELD (he/him) -> status: erik can’t help but hurt himself, for better or worse. he’s loved dion for longer than he cares to remember and he just wishes he could just get over it… yet there’s some comfort in it being the only stable thing he’s had in his life; it’s always there, for better or worse. they’ve been together through A LOT, but dion doesn’t even acknowledge how close they are. it seems like a hopeless love.

MIKI KAGANOFF (she/her) & JACE KAGANOFF (he/him) -> status: jace and miki are actually married, however their relationship currently is very strained. she cheated on him and had a child with his best friend back in their homeland of kiskkaddon and has since followed him to lathsbury to try and make things up. jace wants to work things out but it’s difficult for him.

CAMERON BLISS (she/her) -> JIHI ARTHEA (he/him) -> status: cameron has had a crush on jihi for years; he was an upperclassman of hers when she and friends attended pinella’s pass survivalist school and she chose to come to the aegean guild of explorers partially so she could reconnect with him. however, he seems to have all his sights set on guild leader madja fandel. but something seems… wrong about it. cameron tries to hide her affections and grapple with this odd turn of events. jihi seems hardly aware of how she feels.

JIHI ARTHEA (he/him) ?? MADJA FANDEL (she/her) -> status: there’s something wrong with their relationship or whatever is going on. something more sinister than hero worship is at work here. almost as if he’s under a spell to only think of pleasing her.

DARAN “PAPA” ISAI (he/him) -> KALIFIA FANDEL (she/her) -> status: this isn’t much more than a passing flirtation. papa sees kalifia often at his bar and he thinks she’s beautiful. she has yet to open up to him more than just grunts or side glances; but hey, he does have her favorite beer memorized. he’s not actively trying though—she’s just a sight for sore eyes to him.

CHARISSA GOODWYN (she/her) & ALTAIR NOCTURNE (he/him) -> The Horrors aside; the two of them have been at each others throats her thick as thieves since the moment they first met. they usually say don’t fight fire with fire, yet somehow these two make it work. they’ve never officially established what their relationship is, but there’s definitely one there even if they won’t verbally define it.

HELIX CARMINE (he/they) / ELODIA PESANTE (she/her) -> status: another tragedy. helix and elodia were very very sweet on each other, until a tragedy left her for dead in the labyrinth. she did it to protect their team, but with how things go after and helix experiences the horrors… losing her is too much to bear.

GRAND DUKE ARAN LATHSBURY (he/him) & GENERAL DUCHESS MUINENA LATHSBURY (she/her) -> status: muinena died in childbirth to she and aran’s second child, though the circumstances of it are suspicious. she was as strong as an ox, and wasn’t prone to sickness and had a health pregnancy throughout so it was odd for her to suddenly go under. that and their daughter being stolen after that as well made the whole thing even worse. aran hasn’t truly been the same after losing both her and his elder brother, the former king, in the same 2 year timespan.

GRAND DUKE ARAN LATHSBURY (he/him) & DUCHESS PRIMROSE AEGOS (she/her) -> status: pressure from the ruling body of the kingdom forced aran’s hand into finding a second wife but the two of them are hardly compatible nor do they hardly speak at all. there’s no love there between them but both of them are bound by outside forces, aran by duty and primrose for convenience and to support herself and her daughter.

TENOR SYMPHONIA (he/him) & SOPRANO SYMPHONIA (she/her) -> status: oh these songbirds have been married and in love for many many years, having two beautiful children from the union: forte and melody. tenor was previously a very famous traveling bard and they first met at a showing of his and the rest was history.

Frieren: Beyond Journey's End Episode 5 Review - Phantoms And A Dragon

I feel like this was more of a buildup episode rather than an action-packed one. Sure, there was plenty of action between each character, but I say it’s a buildup because the confrontation with the solar dragon is for the next episode. We’re also introduced to a new character, Stark.

As Frieren and Fern journey towards Aureole, they stop by a town with a strange rumor that people disappear. It turns out that the disappearance was caused by a demon that summons phantoms from people’s memories. It tried to manipulate Fern by taking the shape of Heiter. She wasn’t affected by the trickery, but she was disgusted by how the ability took shape of someone dear to her. For Frieren, the illusions took the form of Himmel. This surprised her a bit as she had expected to see Flamme. The fact that she’s amused that she’s changed really does question whether she liked Himmel romantically or not. I’m actually not too sure if this portion of the show is supposed to be significant, but it just seems like an obstacle in their path for them to obliterate.

I think the most interesting aspect of the first half of this episode was that it could take another decade for Frieren to reach Aureole, a fact that Fern isn’t too pleased with. Given how slow they progress and how much of a slacker Frieren is, I wouldn’t be too surprised if it does take another decade for them to reach the end.

The second half of the episode has them walking until they reach Riegel Canyon. They encounter a dragon with a large nest. Frireren is quite interested in the grimoire it possesses, but a dragon is way too strong for them to defeat so they run away. I think this is the first time they ran from a fight? This is wise because it’s realistic to run away. Even if they are powerful mages, if magic doesn’t work on dragon, then it doesn’t work. I’m glad the writer didn’t make it so that they’re super OP when it comes to dragons; even they have their own disadvantages against certain types of monsters.

A new character is introduced. Like how Fern is Heiter’s legacy, Stark is Eisen’s. Stark is an orphan who was raised by Eisen and then ran off for unknown reasons. Wait, red clothes and raised by a dwarf? Is Stark Lloyd Irving from Tales of Symphonia? Back on topic, Frieren wants to recruit Stark as part of Eisen’s request and the fact that her party needs a front line attacker as a party of only two mages can be disadvantageous as shown with the dragon earlier. Stark is revered as a hero in the village, but he is anything but heroic. He’s very cowardly and the dragon just coincidentally flew off when he just stood there staring at it. I find him super adorable—as adorable as Frieren. The cowardly personality doesn’t seem too over the top like Zenitsu from Demon Slayer.

I can tell Stark is a lot stronger than he presents himself because of two factors: the first is the fact that the dragon flew off when seeing Stark. That means Stark is definitely stronger than the dragon and it knows that—they’re intelligent creatures after all; notice that dragon never attacked the village ever since. Second, Stark is strong enough to create a ravine from the cliff behind him. This means that he is very strong and can handle that axe well despite having zero fighting experience. What I like is that despite Stark’s timidity, Frieren doesn’t berate him for being a coward unlike Fern who gave him the dirtiest, meanest stink eye she has ever produced. Being scared also means being brave, after all. Even the bravest of people get scared, after all.

Chiaki Kobayashi is slowly becoming the next generation “it” seiyuu where he’s practically in every show. I always see his name in several animes and this is no exception. However, it makes sense why he’s everywhere; having a job is better than having no job and Kobayashi is good at what he does. Do I like his voice as Stark? I do. It’s not grating and the emotional factor is actually very comedic like how it’s presented.

The next episode will be about confronting the dragon. How do you think it will be done? Will there be cool action scenes? Will Stark finally join the party? What are your thoughts about this episode?

I think it's most likely JRPGs with magical worlds (mostly Tales of Symphonia) and anime like One Piece. Probably especially One Piece bcs there's definitely lots of Weird stuff in my story as well. Since I got lots of crystal-related stuff going on I actually wonder if I subconsciously took that from Final Fantasy games? I know when I played Bravely Default (which is actually also a FF game) I was (positively) surprised that they Also got four, big, special crystals and the protags travel around to find them...

10.) if your story is titled, why did you choose that title?

The (current) title is possibly not the title I will go with if I ever finish the story, so it's more of a wip-title I guess (maybe?). It's actually a quote from the game series Boktai, which is rather dear to me. I like that it can be interpreted as "there's always hope" because there's lots of dying and some wanting-to-die in my story and the characters learn to overcome lots of problems even if everything kind of sucks and the odds are against them... though ig that sounds super general... Maybe Silver could be even seen as someone symbolizing that hope *gestures at finale of the first arc*

The characters.... can't even put into words how important they became to me...
