One interesting thing about St-Petersburg is, it’s a city with a long and complicated history. You’re just walking around minding your own business, and accidentally bump into some really painful parts of history.

My brother lives near a park. It’s a really nice park, too. With trees, and ponds, and pavilions, and lovely bridges, and starlings, and old women feeding ducks, and of course seagulls because seagulls are everywhere, and monuments, because monuments in St-Petersburg are even more common than seagulls. There are monuments to communists domestic and foreign 

(this is Raymonde Dien, a French activist who protested Indochina war in 50s), and to politicians, and to war heroes, and also just statues, like these ones 

- a boy looking into water (on the right) and a boy who caught a fish (on the left), and women who apparently are eager to swim even in such unpleasant weather:

It’s a big park, too. And we were kind of curious, in a detached way, walking around: why are there no shops? Why no amusement parks? It’s a very conveniently placed piece of land, directly beside a metro station, and every piece of land like this gets filled with shops and other businesses pretty quickly.

So we were wondering idly. And then we came upon this monument:

It says, “Here stood the crematorium ovens of a brickfactory. The ashes of hundreds of thousands of the warriors and the citizens of besieged Leningrad are resting in the ponds, in the lawns, and in the soil beneath your feet. May their memory be eternal.”

And just like this, a painful, but distant, memory suddenly becomes very, very real, and very close.
