I’ve been meaning to review Bruno Fazzolari’s scents for some time. I think it’s been years as the house has since rebranded as Fzotic and redesigned its bottles, which look fantastic. I seem to recall the Fzotics reviewed very well but I was not so personally enamoured with them. However, in today’s climate of outrageously inflated pricing in the fragrance market, these scents have taken on a new light. Assuming they have not had any major reformulations, at US$130/30 ml, they represent good quality for the price and perform well.
Five is a pleasant and balanced citrus herbal scent that is the easiest to wear of the set. The hespiridic opening is assertive but never aggressive while rosemary lends it a bit of herbaceous, woody depth. The neroli and a spicy petitgrain soften the scent on the dry down. It’s a bit too reminiscent of Irish Spring soap bars for me to enjoy.
Monserrat is another easy-wearing fruity floral. Opens with a bright grapefruit that mellows out with musky florals and a subtly tart apricot. The dry down is a bit denser that I would like and I think that’s the “plaster” note. Having said that, I prefer this kind of density over a fluffy musk and it gives the scent an unexpected bit of heft.
Lampblack opens innocuously with zesty, carefree citrus notes and a light touch of vetiver which might give you the impression this is a nondescript freshie. However, as the scent develops, the smoke starts to enter, building until it’s transformed from bright and clean to standing on blistering hot tarmac. After a couple hours, the aggression tones down and the grapefruit appears, as if charred. A creative take on the cliched smoky genre.
Room 237 is not nearly as eerie as its ad copy suggests. Having said that, I don’t find it to be an easy wear. In addition to vinyl, I’m reminded of household cleaners, or the smell of barbacide, that blue-hued disinfectant you find in hair salons where stylists store their combs. As the scent dries down, the scent’s initial artificiality becomes more human with musky notes emerging from below. More of a niche experiment than something one would wear.
Ummagumma is a rich and spicy chocolate gourmand flavoured with woods and resins. While it’s not particularly creative, it’s perfectly balanced and unlike other chocolates, it’s never overbearing, harsh or overly sweet and does not veer into coffee/toffee territory. An easy, comforting wear that I would consider a staple in this genre. It’s probably my favourite of the set.

Fzotic Ummagumma
Nose: Bruno Fazzolari
notes: dark chocolate, saffron, carnation; labdanum, tobacco, leather, sandalwood; olibanum, cedar, vanilla, tonka
Ummagumma is a rich, dark, sweet contraption with an unusually salty-animalic underlayer. Yes, there’s chocolate in the opening, but it’s not dominant; Ummagumma is all dark resins and woods and leather and tobacco, with that little thread of salty gold at the heart.
@noseandnous had a great mental image of Ummagumma as an stray cat brought into a cozy book-lined study and fed sardines. all the tropes are there (the dark wood paneling; the leather armchair; the crackling fireplace) but Ummagumma is saltier, furrier, and wilder than you’d expect from the usual “Dad’s study” sort of Oriental.
By about 2 hours in, Ummagumma transforms completely. It’s shifted to a warm reddish-brown spicy incense base, almost like cinnamon candy, or like the spicy incense of Lita, but here it has a wild, roaring, crackling texture. It feels like flame and booming drums, like some kind of crazed Samhain bonfire dance. We’re not in the cozy study anymore; we’re rocking out, and the thunder is rolling in.
This fiery incense phase is extremely potent — it lasts at least 18 hours, sending up tendrils of warming spice all day long.
I’ve encountered Ummagumma’s satisfying salty-gold-animalic chord in a couple other rich dark indie perfumes: Pryn Taiga is salty-gold + pine-sap leather, and Slumberhouse Sova is salty-gold + cloves.
Ummagumma is in the same rough, potent indie style as Taiga and Sova, but more multifaceted and chaotic than the other two; it’s salty-gold AND dark resins AND chocolate AND spice. Is it a hot mess or a reckless delight? I’m still not sure.

And we must confess, it works perfectly- now, the rich, earthy indulgence of the dark chocolate springs more naturally from the juicy, boozy opening, while the animalics and spicy florals recede slightly in favor of the aromatics, allowing the composition to breathe and evolve. Now, with Corpse Reviver, Bruno Fazzolari has brought the spirit of Cadavre Exquis back to the mortal plane, but with a bit of rebalancing meant to let the disparate elements play nice together. ummagumma by fazzolari: love in the time of coronavirus
The time of coronavirus is an anxiety-laden time. Smells can be powerful aids to easing anxiety. This one works for me.
Bruno Fazzolari is, so far, one of my favorite indie perfumers. I personally find his work a little more linear and a little less refined than, say, that of Patricia Nicolaï (my other gigantic favorite). But his compositions are clear, unusual, and beguiling. I’ve tried about half a dozen of his fragrances (including the stellar and much-lauded Lampblack); Ummagumma is my favorite.
It lives in the “gourmand” category of foodie fragrances, but it is more atmosphere than dessert, with a lot of touches traditionally considered ‘masculine.’ There are marked notes of dark chocolate, tobacco, and coffee, but also sandalwood and saffron, a shimmer of frankincense, a tiny hint of leather, of amber, coming from a wonderful labdanum note. There’s spicy carnation, too, maybe my favorite floral note of all time. Underneath, there’s cedar and vanilla and tonka bean—real tonka, my Steady Eddie, my favorite fragrance companion when things get rough.
The whole composition is warm, restful, slightly boozy. I find the mix calming on a visceral level, a spectacular olfactory antidote to coronavirus anxiety. You can get a sample for about 5 bucks from LuckyScent. Really. If you like warm,  ambery stuff, try this one. This is how it feels to me--I know it sounds a little weird, but bear with me:
You are an indoor cat that has through some unfortunate accident become an outdoor cat. After surviving perilously for quite some time in an uncaring city, you find yourself collected and deposited in the private, booklined study of some gigantically powerful Someone who has arranged for you to have a bath (horrible) and a snack of sardines (delightful) and now you are sitting on an alpaca knit throw on an ottoman in front of a fire. You can still remember the stress of surviving, the ghost of it still lingers in your fur, but it is fading now.
Someone is there, in a big leather chair, reading a book. You can smell the paper, hear the crisp sound as they turn the pages. There’s an air of study and reflection, but no tension. It’s night. There’s brandy in a snifter, reddish-gold. The light from desk lamp and fireplace is subdued, warm. The Someone sighs. You have no idea what their cares are, and you don’t have to worry about it. Someone is taking care of all that. You are a rescued cat. You’ve been fed sardines. You are snoozing now.

Fzotic Unsettled

Fzotic Unsettled
Nose: Bruno Fazzolari
notes: pineapple, sandalwood, sea notes, vanilla, bergamot, black tea, clary sage, labdanum
The pineapple opening of Unsettled only lasts seconds until it’s overtaken by a harsh chemical “aquatic” calone note.
It’s more than an hour before the calone chills out somewhat and a little bit of sweetened wood comes out.
this one’s a dud, unfortunately. Cheap synthetics, too low concentration to smell much of anything. A pity; a breezy summer pineapple sounded great.

Hyperallergic: Unsettled at the Nevada Museum of Art: Upending Notions of the West in Tumultuous Times
Unsettled amasses 200 artworks by 80 artists living and/or working in a super-region we call the Greater West, a geographic area that stretches from Alaska to Patagonia, and from Australia to the American West. Though ranging across thousands of miles, this region shares many similarities: vast expanses of open land, rich natural resources, diverse indigenous peoples, colonialism, and the ongoing conflicts that inevitably arise when these factors coexist.
The specific geographic focus of Unsettled begins in Alaska and continues down the west coast of North America, through Central America, concluding in Colombia. Works included span 2,000 years, ranging from Pre-Columbian to modern and contemporary art. Organized by Nevada Museum of Art Curatorial Director and Curator of Contemporary Art JoAnne Northrup with Collaborating Curator, iconic Los Angeles artist Ed Ruscha, Unsettled makes connections among the diverse cultures and artistic practices of this super-region.
As part of the exhibition, artist and perfumer Bruno Fazzolari has created a bespoke, commissioned scent, Unsettled Eau de Parfum, available for purchase in the Museum Shop. A major publication also accompanies the exhibition and serves as the field guide for the 2017 Art + Environment Conference. Published by Hirmer Verlag and designed by Brad Bartlett, Unsettled comprises 224 pages and features 110 color images.
Unsettled is on view at the Nevada Museum of Art in Reno August 26–January 21. It will travel to both the Anchorage Museum and Palm Springs Art Museum.
