chp 1 🎶 a light in your eyes that keeps shining
Shouto stared at the keys in front of him; the black and white rectangles blurred together as he spaced out. He had been running this piece all afternoon and he couldn't be more bored with it if he tried. Each time sounded just as good as the last, but he kept on practicing- leaving no room for the possibility of error. Less errors meant less scolding from his father.
His instructor didn't have any clients this afternoon and told him he could use the piano for as long as he wanted. He took lessons here twice a week when his father had other obligations and couldn't supervise, which also meant he never had much time for himself. Luckily, these two days were such a breath of fresh air from the usual routine that he always looked forward to them.
He let out a heavy sigh as he stretched his fingers and his arms. It was so peaceful; the warm sunlight pouring through the windows, golden hues illuminating the shiny surface of the grand piano. The whole room bathed in incredible warmth, something his house felt completely devoid of.
He couldn't remember how long he had been sitting there, but it felt like hours. He yawned as he glanced at the clock, his eyes slowly trailing over to the mahogany drum set that stared at him from the corner of the room. He had looked at it longingly for about 6 months, ever since he started his lessons here. There were so many different components and they seemed so complex, like a different world he was unaware of.
His curiosity itched to no end and he finally gathered the courage to walk over to it, grazing the drumhead with his fingers as he sat on the stool. His teacher had gone on an errand and he knew she wouldn't be back for a little while. Picking up the black wooden drumsticks, he started tapping gently on each piece to test the different noises they each made. After a few minutes of self-containment, he couldn’t help but let loose. He banged the different sized drums, smashed the symbols and kicked the bass pedal intermittently, with no direction and no sheet music to follow along with. It was the most exhilarated he had felt in a long time. He played with such enthusiasm that sweat started to accumulate on his brow as he lashed about without a care in the world. He didn't notice this rarity himself, but throughout his messy performance, his face was plastered with a playful grin. His focus shifted upwards as his eye caught a glimpse of a figure and he jumped up, almost tripping over the bass drum. A young girl was leaning in the doorway, her arms crossed and a smirk playing at her features. She couldn't help but find his clumsiness amusing.
Locking on her gaze, he instantly recognized her from the family photos on his teacher's desk. It was her daughter and he didn't know much about her, besides the few details she had mentioned to him in the past. Apparently she was exceptionally talented in multiple instruments and attended a very esteemed music academy in the city. The way she always beamed when she spoke of her, made it obvious how proud she was, and that shamefully always stung him. The only pride ever displayed from his father never felt out of love and his mother, well she was a different story.
"I... I'm sorry I uh...shouldn't have-"
She interrupted mid-sentence, holding up her hand and walking towards him, "Don't apologize! I'm the one who should apologize for startling you during your performance." She smiled and jokingly added," I'm going to guess that was your first time playing? If not, well then my mother might have lost her touch."
"That was the first time." He stood up straighter, trying to play off his embarrassment by transitioning into his usual stoic gaze. "I was just... curious is all."
"Ah. Well I have to say, you look good back there."
"Thanks," he mumbled, his cheeks feeling hot as he put down the drumsticks and started to back away from the drum set.
"Whoa, not so fast." She was at his side quickly and pushed him back towards the seat. He looked at her, confusion written on his face as he sat back down. She picked up the drumsticks, effortlessly twirling one around in her fingers. "Consider this your first lesson." Something about her made him feel at ease and he couldn't think of an excuse to refuse. He nodded in agreement and she grinned.
She didn't waste any time before naming each component and explaining the proper technique and form, including fixing the way he held the drumsticks. He admired how she spoke with such emotion, using her hands when trying to emphasize her opinion and the way her eyes lit up when she rambled on about what aspects she thought were the most important in order to be a good musician. It wasn't just her bright green eyes or that faint smell of gardenia that reminded him of her mother, but it was that burning passion towards music which was so evident in their words and motions. He longed to have that kind of burning emotion towards it as well. He soaked in every word, not wanting to forget a single thing she said--- or how her hair glistened against her smooth, freckled skin.
After going over the basics for about twenty minutes, she demonstrated a few basic drum beats. Once she ran through them a few times, she handed him back the drumsticks, gesturing for him to try. He followed her instruction, recreating the beat under her guidance. It wasn't hard for him to catch on. She stood back and watched as he seemed to effortlessly repeated the sample over and over, even adding in little changes while increasing the tempo each time. It was wildly impressive and after a few minutes, she spoke again. "Can I ask you something?'
"Go ahead," he responded, still focused on keeping a beat.
"Do you actually enjoy playing piano?"
He stopped and turned to face her. "What makes you ask that?"
"Well, I heard you playing Einaudi earlier, many times through I might add. And don’t get me wrong... you play wonderfully! Probably with some of the best form I've ever heard from someone our age. It's just... it sounded a bit— robotic, or like it wasn’t coming from the heart." She pushed herself off the wall and walked to the other side of the drum set. "Listening to you play just now, and before when I came in and interrupted you, something just feels different. It's like I could finally hear you in it."
"But you've only just met me..." he stated bluntly. "How could you know something like that?" There was no doubt that he was experiencing a bit of freedom in himself today, but her analysis suddenly had him feeling a little exposed and embarrassed. These unexpected emotions were new to him.
"I'm sorry... it was just a feeling I had. I didn't mean to pry." She fell silent for a moment, having felt slightly bad for how he reacted. She chuckled in hopes to lighten the mood. "I guess with that rad hair you just totally have that whole badass drummer vibe going on." She leaned back, framing his face with her fingers and staring at him through the opening. "I mean, who wouldn't want to be the next John Bonham."
"John Bonham?"
She gestured towards a framed record on the wall behind him, feeling thankful to change the subject. "Only one of the best drummers to ever grace the face of the earth." She walked over to her backpack and pulled out her phone, unraveling the headphones wrapped around it. She tapped on the screen a few times and then handed it over to him.
His tone was quizzical as he read off the name, "Fool in the Rain by ...Led Zeppelin?"
"Have you really never heard of them?"
Shouto shook his head and her mouth dropped.
"Alright well... take it all in buddy," she motioned towards the ear buds.
He put them in his ears, pressed play and stared down at the phone as the song started. It didn’t take long for him to be hooked, zoning in on the drums and how they effortlessly worked with the other instruments to form the melody. His head started to move with the beat, following along with its rhythm. He could identify the specific sounds of each component he had learned. It's like something clicked and he understood when she had said that a good drummer can make all the difference to how the song comes together. It was the first time he had actually "heard" a piece of music. Don't get him wrong, he knew the piano could be an incredibly moving instrument, but nothing had ever spoken to him personally like this. The song was about halfway through when it suddenly paused.
"Uh, someone named ... Boomer is calling." He handed her the phone.
"Oh!" she said, glancing up at the clock as she scrambled to answer.
‘What kind of name is Boomer?’ he thought.
"Hey! Sorry if you've been waiting, I lost track of time. I'll head over n--- ....I SAID I WAS SORRY....... It's none of your business ya punk! Just chill out, I'll be there soon!" She groaned in annoyance and ended the call, "I gotta go."
She walked to where a few guitars hung on the wall and took down a black and white Gibson, placing it in the case that was on the floor beneath it.
"You play guitar too?" Shouto asked. He wasn't really surprised as his teacher had already told him in the past that she played multiple instruments. He didn't know why but for some reason he wanted to continue being in her company for just a little longer.
"Among other things, yeah. I get bored if I stick to one thing for too long."
"Dividing your efforts into multiple instruments has to make mastering one pretty difficult," he stated matter of factly.
"I think you and I may look at music a little differently. I don't play an instrument with the need to master it. I play because of how it makes me feel. I let the instrument guide me where it needs to go, not the other way around. I guess, I just don't see the point in doing something if it doesn't set my soul on fire, ya know?" She zipped up the guitar bag and walked back towards him, holding out her hand. "I'm Ronnie by the way."
He walked around the drum set and shook it. "Todoroki, Shouto." She was staring at him intensely, making him shift uncomfortably. "What is it?" he asked a bit harshly, feeling conscious about his scar.
"Oh! Sorry- ha! I was just admiring that rockstar hair of yours again." She flashed him a rock and roll sign, though he didn't understand the gesture. It wasn't just the hair that had her mesmerized, but the smooth, burned skin around his eye. She felt sad that she found it so beautiful, without knowing what kind of pain was behind it.
"Thanks? I guess." He looked away, putting his hands in his pockets.
She smiled. "It kind of reminds me of Christmas morning." He looked back at her, his cheeks feeling warm again.
"Well, I guess I'll see ya around, Shouto."
His mouth went a bit dry at the familiarity and he nodded. "Yeah. See ya."
She turned and walked out of the room. He listened as the front door opened, feeling an odd knot in his stomach as it closed. He grasped at the sensation over his shirt and went over to sit back down at the piano. He couldn't pinpoint what exactly this feeling was, but it had made him feel SOMETHING, so he relished in it. Grabbing his phone from out of his pocket, he opened up Apple Music and typed in a song. He closed his eyes, his lips twitching up slightly as "Fool in the Rain" started to play through the speakers.

BACKGROUND INFO:
alright. so.
isaac's backstory is neither tragic nor easy. his father was an immigrant who married his mother solely to get a green card (y’all, to be fair... the citizenship tests are whack). there wasn’t any real romance between the two, but the drop-ins always said otherwise. no, outside of putting on a show for government officials, isaac’s father and mother were friends at the best of times.
the best of times culminated in a son who grew up in an interesting dynamic. his father and mother never even attempted to be anything more than friends (with, as you can see, the occasional benefits). after the check-ins finally stopped, his father and mother even began sleeping in different rooms. his mother would trade in her queen for a double and replace the space his father used to take up with his cradle.
it was nothing like the ‘unhappy marriage’ trope, though... again, because they barely ever pretended to be married. they would take their wedding rings off when they went out with friends. sometimes they would even take off their rings around each other and talk the other up to someone attractive.
so it was unorthodox, but it was much better than his parents pretending to be in love in that way and giving him a skewed version of what romance should look like.
one down-side to it, though, was that isaac never knew who he was supposed to go to for what. usually it’s just a given that “if you need/want x, go to the matriarch, if you need/want y, go to the patriarch” but... what happens... when your parents are basically just your friends?
so thank god for growing up in the age of technology. like,, ya,, a literal baby can’t google things like “how to say ‘mom’” but a 15y/o can google “how to shave”
so... ya... his parents were his friends, the internet was his parent(s?).
one thing the internet couldn’t do? give him drums. it could introduce him to the likes of ringo starr, john bonham, keith moon, and ginger baker, but it couldn’t give him drums... not when he was only, like... 10, at least.
so he put a set on his christmas wishlist and figured they would divide amongst themselves.
so ya, his 10th christmas, he got a shitty little rockwood hohner kit that he would use for the next nine years.
he never received any professional training. again, he didn’t know who to ask and... youtube wouldn’t exist for another three years. he tried to teach himself using a few books and, if nothing else, figured out a few simple beats and how to gain independence.
after learning those simple little beats and not knowing if he wanted to buy the next book, he decided to take a break and, instead of going back to professional books, he’d just listen to some of his favorite tracks... most of which were ginger baker... which made things kind of hard when he only had one bass drum, two tom-toms, and one floor tom. those, plus the really low quality pearl cymbals. still, he did his best to make it work.
just a side-note that, because of videos of ginger, isaac used (and still uses, out of habit) a mix of traditional and matched grip.
he went back and forth between the books and mimicking the patterns of other drummers (mostly ginger) up until he was around 16 and his friend, ribs (y’all), decided to teach him a few more technical skills. what you want to learn for this song are polyrhythms, but those are hard and no, ginger isn’t using a crash there, he’s using a splash and do you want a discount on some better cymbals and drumheads from my parents’s music shop because this is a very functional kit but it kind of sounds whack
he continued using the same whack kit, but replaced the heads with aquarians, as per ribs’s recommendation (but evans and remo are also good) and, after literally examining baker’s kit, replaced the cymbals with various zildjian collections
even though we stan istanbul agop in this house.
he also started listening to more drummers than... pretty much just baker with a hint of john bonham, keith moon, and ringo starr. as his friend suggested, he tried out drummers like buddy rich, art blakey, travis barker, dave grohl, karen carpenter, neil peart, nick mason, simon phillips –– even was told to listen to ac/dc songs just to see how a successful band could be made using essentially the same beat over and over and over.
so now he had some split time. school. work. practice. figure out who the hell was making dinner that night/if there was someone making dinner last night because they might both be talking each other up.
although he applied to various colleges, and although some of these colleges actually accepted him, he ultimately decided not to go. instead, he moved from san jose to los angeles in the hopes that he’d find something bigger than himself... and a new drum set...
he found the latter in a ludwig kit with two bass drums, two tom-toms, and two floor toms. then he just added a bunch of stuff and tried to make it like ginger baker’s. pretty much spent all of his money on it and then some.
when his friends formed a band and found success, he was very very happy for them... but... he found himself stuck... driving ubers.
and lyfts!
he’d seen the twilight zone before. he loved that show. he’d seen the episode ‘the hitch-hiker,’ so he was really driving for the companies against his better judgment. 
his worst uber story? the time a guy got into the car, had pinged a location that was still marked as a store on the uber gps but had recently been torn down, and tried to attack him when they got there :\ he 110% fought back, though. was fired because the other guy was the one who made it out injured.
only drove for lyft after that :\
he did take on a few projects, but he... proved to be too much of a roger waters for people who just wanted to chill and have fun. there would be adverts for people who wanted to form a band and he’d be like “hell yeah! finally! a band!” then he’d get pissed that they advertised it so seriously but really... just wanted to jam. did not have any plans to try to do anything with it.
the few projects he did join that involved people who wanted to actually achieve success... if they were slacking, you best bet his inner roger waters came out! which is why he never stuck around in any projects for too long!
but ‘projects’ and ‘jam sessions’ were totally different. you want to do ‘wipeout’ in a project? he’s gonna take that intro that literally everyone on the planet knows SERIOUSLY. you want to do ‘wipeout’ in a jam session? LET’S HAVE SOME FUN WITH IT.
he does some session/studio drumming for other artists to make some extra money while doing something he genuinely enjoys... but... still... it is no project™
in between things right now, he got a call from joakim that, while muffled and staticky, sounded like it said ‘get here, please’ and clearly stated where he was.
of course, voicemail lines were crossed and many many many essential words were left out – words that were basically saying the exact opposite ahfsdkjl. the shadow’s really playin them :\
so here he is, in all his glory.
TL;DR:
i was gonna kms if i didn’t play another drummer, so this is my ginger baker fanboy whose parents were literally just best friends and, as a result, were also both his friend. the internet raised him. started playing drums when he was 10 on a low qual kit with low qual cymbals that his parents got him for christmas, but literally why would you get a beginning a good set? continued playing. eventually moved to los angeles and tried to form many successful projects, but was too much of a roger waters. was summoned up here by the shadow man fucking around joakim. his greatest shame is how many ubers he has driven.
PERSONALITY INFO:
he will always say his proudest moment was when he learned how to play ‘toad’ by ginger baker cream all the way through.

a lowkey control freak which completely goes against the way he dresses and the vibe he gives off.

FEARS:
mannequins: they’re already creepy enough when you really think about it, then you add in that episode of the twilight zone where the characters wake up in an unfamiliar house and go outside and basically everyone is just a mannequin? ya he hates mannequins.
hitch-hikers: so, as we have just seen, he’s had it bad enough with people who were registered to an app, paying, their personal information readily available, etc., etc... so then what would happen if it was just a complete and utter stranger who didn’t have any personal information, any ping, and was the sole focus of a different twilight zone episode? he... is going... to drive past you. he’ll feel bad about it, but...
dying with nothing to show: here’s the money shot! here’s the deep fear! as has been shown throughout, isaac craves success and some form of a legacy. if he dies with nothing to show for his life, then was his life ever worth it in general?

In 1982, legendary drummer Buddy Rich filmed three pilot episodes for "The Buddy Rich Show" in New York's famous Statler Hotel. Featuring once-in-a-lifetime performances from The Buddy Rich Band playing alongside Buddy's friends and fellow jazz greats including: Ray Charles, Mel Torme, Stan Getz, Gerry Mulligan, Lionel Hampton and Woody Herman in front of a live audience – this historical footage has never been seen. As tens of thousands of fans who filled CenturyLink Field eagerly waited for Taylor Swift to take the stage, a video splashed on two massive screens showed die-hard fans’ reactions to seeing her “Look What You Made Me Do” video for the first time. One particularly enamored Swiftie was barely audible.
Eyes wide, mouth agape, the creeping suspicion he’s witnessing something colossal becomes increasingly visible on his face. Pausing to take it all in and ascribe some sort of meaning to the experience, all he can muster is, “(Expletive!).”
As Swift and her battalion of dancers, musicians and stagehands charged through her two-hour set Tuesday night, it was hard not to similarly feel like a doe-y fan in headlights as Swift’s stunning new tour rife with holy (expletive) moments was barreling down on you.
Screams filled the stadium like an army of high-pitched 12s as Swift’s silhouette emerged in a puff of smoke to blast through a biting version of “ … Ready for It?,” the opening track off last fall’s “Reputation” album. Swift drew heavily from her new material, which proclaims the death of “old Taylor” on her chart-topping hit “Look What You Made Me Do.” For better or worse, tabloid drama has become an inextricable part of the superstar’s career, both fueling her music as well as distracting from it. The “Reputation” album and stadium tour seem to set a torch to it all, letting the world know she’s done merely shaking it off.
A cobra is the Reputation Stadium Tour’s unofficial mascot (and perhaps Tay Tay’s new spirit animal), widely believed to be inspired by a Kim Kardashian dis tweet. A tangle of snakes mesmerizingly slither and lash on two giant video screens, which later morphed into an auxiliary stage for Swift’s band, as six shirtless dudes bang colossal drumheads, thunderously taking out “King of My Heart” with Swift splitting for one of many wardrobe changes.
The production on her new juggernaut of a tour is astounding, and four cities in, the execution was flawless. After performing a few songs from two small stages amid the crowd — including a confetti-blasting “Shake It Off” with a cameo from opener Charli XCX — a cobra chariot carried Swift overhead and back to the main stage for a stomping “Bad Blood.” Black-clad dancers hung from the stage’s rigs and climbed around an industrial platform, revealed as giant screens opened, feeling like “The Matrix”—the musical.
Both Swift and London synth-pop singer Charli XCX paused at times to acknowledge their absent tourmate Camila Cabello, who canceled her Seattle appearance, citing dehydration, on what Charli XCX called a “girl-powered” tour.
While ticket sales nationwide were reportedly slower than usual, which some industry insiders attributed to a new “dynamic” pricing model, CenturyLink Field was mostly filled with moms, 20-something dudes and young girls testing the limits of the buddy system. (Swift later pegged Tuesday’s crowd at 56,000.)
Swift’s is a commanding stage presence, whether she’s unaccompanied and strutting across the stage in knee-high leather boots, or decked out as a sci-fi Egyptian queen flanked by her minions in movement. The only knock — and not an insignificant one — was that Swift’s vocals were often absent or ineffective. A degree of lip-syncing is expected of highly choreographed megaproductions like hers, though too frequently Swift seemed to be either mouthing along or her voice was simply indistinguishable from the backing track or her supporting vocalists.
She fared better during the campfire intimacy of two acoustic numbers — “Dancing With Our Hands Tied” and “Holy Ground” — though her voice wavered a bit on the former. A solo piano version of “Long Live” was another standout, her vocals not competing with the production’s pomp and circumstance.
Nevertheless, the vocal hang-ups weren’t insurmountable and the spectacle alone was worth the price of admission. Swift gave a master class in how to cap a stadium gig with what was refreshingly more of a knockout finale than applause-hungry encore (though cheer they did).
During her Gatsby-in-wonderland closing run, Swift and her pastel cohorts danced and splashed in a water fountain in front of a lit up mansion with carefree reverie. As “This is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things” ended in a fusillade of fireworks spouting through the stadium’s open roof and the cast of this triumphant Broadway-goes-to-the-Super-Bowl segment took their final bow, a parting message lingered on the screens.
“In the death of her reputation, she felt truly alive,” it proclaimed.
If “old Taylor” — or at least her “reputation” — is dead, long live the new Swift.

ST: TNG S4 Watchthrough Episodes 18-21
Identity Crisis: Alright episode, you have redeemed Geordi for me after Galaxy’s Child! This was an interesting one. Two officers that Geordi once worked with are missing, so the Enterprise is sent to the planet that they were an Away Team on along with an officer named Suzanna who was also on the team. So what happened? Long story short, the Away Team members were infected with something that is causing them to lose their humanity. it starts to happen to Suzanna… and it will soon happen to Geordi as well. I like Geordi and Suzanna’s relationship. It isn’t romantic, it comes off very much like a sibling relationship with Geordi trying to comfort her and it’s her who reaches out to Geordi at the end. It’s really sweet. I honestly wonder which one is scarier, not knowing exactly what is happening to you? Or knowing and only being able to wait and hopefully figure out a solution before it’s too late? The aliens also looked pretty cool. But yeah, this one was good. It allowed Geordi to show off his investigation skills and again,t he sibling-like dynamic with Suzanna was really sweet. Also major props to Dr. Crushr for again being a badass doctor who essentially saved the day by figuring out the cause. And Data being anxious about Geordi, oh honey. So yeah, solid episode~! 4/5.
The Nth Degree: Oh hey, Barclay’s back. Didn’t expect that. So what happens to our anxious-ridden officer this time. An Away Mission grants him super intelligence! Yep, really! The newfound intelligence not only increases Barclay’s competency level, but also his confidence and productivity. Compared to last time, the crew is far nicer with Troi especially being glad that he’s been more willing to put himself forward and even tells in in the cold opening to take some credit f himself. Which is always so difficult to remember when one has anxiety. It always tells you over and over that you’ll never be good enough, that no one cares about you, and it will destroy any sense of accomplishment that you have by making you feel like you’ll never be good enough. It is a horrible feeling and Barclay displays those feelings perfectly. So the intellectual/confidence boost does a lot for him and when Geordi pointed out that something’s wrong because he’s not acting like himself, he gets upset because… well, why wouldn’t he? It’s understandable why Geordi’s concerned, but Barclay doens’t want to go back to the nervous wreck that he was before this. But when he decides to essentially fuse his brain with the main computer… yyyyeah. This feels like it was based on Spock’s Brain to an extent considering the sudden intellect plot point and one’s brain gets uploaded into a computer, except far less stupid and doens’t involve literally stealing a brain. But yeah, it’s solid. IDK if I like it better than Barclay’s last episode, but it was still enjoyable and Barclay is even more relatable as Hell now. 3.5/5.
Qpid: We got a twofer for returning characters folks! Not only is Q back as the title indicates, but so is Picard’s love interest Vash from Captain’s Holiday! Q, of course, takes interest in Picard’s love life and decides on the only sensible option to see how far it goes… make Picard and the crew Robin Hood and his Merry Men, have Vash play Maid Marian, and force our heroes to rescue the fair maiden so that Picard may win her heart! OF COURSE! Boy Q should really consider a career in matchmaking, he’s essentially God so why not pick up a new hobby? XD The second I realized what having both Q and one of Picard’s love interests in the same episode would mean, I was prepared for complete and utter chaotic fun… and I am not disappointed! Admittedly going from ‘archeology conference’ to ‘Robin Hood’ was a bit of a sudden shift, but it was just fun! Word was a laugh riot, haha! Gosh, I love Vash, and heck she’d have probably rescued herself in Picard hadn’t tried to rescue her. Then you have Q being Q and gosh it was just great! The theme of Picard not wanting to appear vulnerable and essentially acting in a way that made it seem like Vash was an embarrassment… yeah I’d be annoyed if I were here too. Honestly, this whole thing felt like Q got jealous of Vash… then realized how interesting she was, and decided to become buddies cause of their endless fascination/pining over Picard. Ah, solidarity! I liked Q Who and Deja Q better and I have some nitpicks like the crew feeling mostly irrelevant and… why did the boys all get cool sword-fights but Crusher and Troi just get to smash pots? Oh right, girls. Silly me! Nevermind that Crusher’s very handy with a phaser and that they’re trained officers, girls getting in ont he action in a 90’s show when standards were improving? That’s ridiculous! Regardless, it was still the utter chaos that I expect from a Q episode and I loved it~! 4/5.
The Drumhead: Well… this one certainly stood the test of time/relevancy. So in this one we are dealing with a potential Klingon/Romulan conspiracy that stretches even within Starfleet. An admiral named Satie is brought on board to help with the investigation/interrogations… and it ends up turning into a full-blown witch hunt. It seems that they based this on the Red Scareor the Salem Witch Trials, movements that began due to fear and hatred that ruined/ended multiple lives out of pure paranoia and prejudice. Which as recent times have shown… yeah, clearly movements are doomed to repeat. When it turns out that a medical officer named Tarses has Romulan ancestry, he is put onto blast and practically prosecuted as a spy by Satie. Despite there being no evidence and his only crime lying that he had Vulcan ancestry because of the anti-Romulan sentiments. It’s somewhat understandable, the Romulans have been… well, not nice. But not only does that not mean that every Romulan is evil or without morals as episodes like The Enemy and The Defector demonstrated to some degree, but it’s no good reason to suspect or persecute Tarses all due to his background, nothing on the man or his current actions itself. He told a lie, that’s not a crime and pretty understandable under the circumstances. Picard of course is against this… but Worf isn’t. Makes sense, the Romulans are part of why he’s under the circumstances that he and his family are under now so him being Hellbent on exposing a Romulan conspiracy and any potential prejudice/paranoia that comes with it makes sense. it’s not good but makes sense. At least he snaps out of it by the end while Satie exposes herself as the horrid person that he is. She may have seemed perfectly professional and rational, but alas. Like her saying that Picard couldn’t be trusted because of the Borg assimilation? What the ever-loving Hell lady?! So yeah… yeah this is very much one of those episodes that people should really rewatch from time to time. Not only is it a well-done episode and has one of Picard’s best speeches, but the message and theme remain as relevant as ever: the spread of paranoia vs upholding personal freedom. The only way to stop things from repeating is to remember and learn from them, and if any show can remind us of those things, it’s Star Trek. 5/5.
Alright, just a few more of Season. left to go~! While there’s been a couple of misses, there have been far more hits. This may be my favorite seaosn of TNG thus far~! Still three more to go, but still! Will the last few episodes manage to maintain that quality? We’ll see soon enough~!

Today we remember the passing of Neil Peart who died January 7, 2020 in Santa Monica, California after a 3 year battle with Brain Cancer
Neil Ellwood Peart, OC was a Canadian musician and writer best known as the drummer and primary lyricist of the rock band Rush. Peart received numerous awards for his musical performances, including an induction into the Modern Drummer Readers Poll Hall of Fame in 1983, making him the youngest person ever so honoured. Known to fans by the nickname 'The Professor', his drumming was renowned for its technical proficiency and his live performances for their exacting nature and stamina.
Peart was born in Hamilton, Ontario, and grew up in Port Dalhousie (now part of St. Catharines). During adolescence, he floated between regional bands in pursuit of a career as a full-time drummer. After a discouraging stint in England to concentrate on his music, Peart returned home, where he joined Rush, a Toronto band, in mid-1974, six years after its formation. They released nineteen studio albums, with ten exceeding a million copies sold in the United States. Billboard ranks the band third for the "most consecutive gold or platinum albums by a rock band". Early in his career, Peart's performance style was deeply rooted in hard rock. He drew most of his inspiration from drummers such as Keith Moon, Ginger Baker, and John Bonham, players who were at the forefront of the British hard rock scene. As time passed, he began to emulate jazz and big band musicians Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich. In 1994, Peart became a friend and pupil of jazz instructor Freddie Gruber. It was during this time that Peart decided to revamp his playing style by incorporating jazz and swing components.
In addition to serving as Rush's primary lyricist, Peart published several memoirs about his travels. His lyrics for Rush addressed universal themes and diverse subjects including science fiction, fantasy, and philosophy, as well as secular, humanitarian, and libertarian themes. Peart wrote a total of seven nonfiction books focused on his travels and personal stories.
On December 7, 2015, Peart announced his retirement from music in an interview with Drumhead Magazine, though bandmate Geddy Lee insisted Peart was quoted out of context, and suggested Peart was "simply taking a break". However, in January 2018, bandmate Alex Lifeson confirmed that Rush was retiring due to Peart's health issues. During his last years Peart lived in Santa Monica, California, with his wife, Carrie Nuttall, and daughter. After a three and a half year illness, Peart died of glioblastoma on January 7, 2020, at age 67.

Did you know you can compare layering odd meters to a pizza? It’ll all make sense when you watch this full hour lesson with master of interdependence, Marco Minnemann!
Odd time signatures should feel natural, and Marco talks about how to “make yourself at home”, break down odd meters, and count them in a comfortable way (like humming the subdivisions and making the counting musical). It’s much easier to build freedom when you can find the groupings that make the most sense to you.
Marco’s style is especially cool because he often preserves the backbeat, even though he’s working in odd time signatures.
