And as soon as he saw the daughter of his parents' sworn enemy standing in his apartment, mingling with Veronica like they were old friends, he should have asked her to leave — that’s what his parents would have expected him to do. He knows better than to hope for the glint of vibrant green eyes and the glowing twist of a blonde ponytail under the setting California sun. And he definitely, definitely shouldn't fall in love with her.

Hello yes. There are probably a lot of them on tumblr. I would definitely check @bughead4days because she makes some pretty great Insta Edits that sometimes inspire fic and sometimes are inspired by fic.

FICS I’VE READ THIS WEEK (52)

Hello everybody!! This is a long one. Sorry about that.

It’s been a full year since I started this nonsense, can you believe it!? It’s been a year since our fandom changed irreparably following that leak and horrible, horrible musical episode (that many -including myself- have never seen all the way through). In fact, I resigned myself to watching through gifs, unsubscribed from the CW and unfollowed basically every social media account for the show and cast (save one) and blocked a whole lot of new terms.

I took on this project because I wanted to remind myself how much I loved fanfiction - and how it didn’t matter what happened in canon because we had so many amazing and talented content creators. And I’m SO pleased and happy that I was right. 

If anyone is interested in the spreadsheet I created for this exercise you can check it out here on this googledoc. I’m going to be taking part in a different fanfiction challenge next (check out @fanfic-reading-challenge​) - so this doc won’t really be updated. It’ll be weird not keeping track like this but perhaps I’ll come up with a better, more efficient way to keep track of all the words and chapters that I read... 

Anyway here are some stats: 

I’ve read 22,455,909 words (7,996,649 of them Bughead) since April 16, 2020. 

The bughead author I’ve read the most of unsurprisingly was @thepointoftheneedle​ - I reread her entire collection three times - upwards of 800,000 words of hers alone. It’s not a secret. I’m a fangirl. But I also like her as a person so that’s a special benefit of being involved in fandom.  

Of course then there was my girl @likemereckless - whom I beta read many many fics for during this pandemic. So when I say I’ve read 384,883 of her words - I mean, I’ve probably read them all three or four times that as I edited and fangirled and was a cheerleader for her through the year. 

One spot for improvement, I guess, would be that I only read 3 fics (total) of non-Bughead riverdale fic (though one is actually Bughead adjacent because it’s their son). I suppose I should check out some Varchie fics (as long as they don’t break up Bughead of course) - so I can support our friends in the bugvarchie community. On my to-do list.

I was introduced to new pairings I’d never read before like at the end of May 2020 - when @anniemurphys shared a single link to a “The Society” fic (a show I’d never actually watched before) - and then I got SUCKED in.  That led me to a bunch of really great writers - like @livinginrhythm - who’s collection I’ve read through twice (all except the cheating fics) - and some of their oneshots have 35000 words! I kept track and I read more of their words than anyone else - a total of 1,069,203 words belong to them!

Then @feelavalanche answered my call for pairings to read - cajoling me into watching Midsommar and delving into the fic.  Between  Anonlady and Rimanez I’ve read 1,125,000 words (+675,000 for rimanez and aonlady +450000 words). And I also gained a crazy obsession with this low-key actor from Sweden (because they make them pretty there) and now know way more than I should... and I’ve seen way more of him than I should. 👀 Gösta *cough*.

I read pairings I’d never thought of before - like Phryne Fisher/Jack Robinson  for Mother Maple - who loves Miss Fisher. I did not love the fic (I’m sorry, MM) but it was interesting diving into something new and different (even if it was only for one fic).

I watched new shows (like Never Have I Ever, Boardwalk Empire, Bridgerton, The Happiest Season, and Fargo) and with those came new fics and new pairings and new fandom friends.

Now I’m going to go read @thepointoftheneedle‘s new masterpiece. It’just BARELY didn’t make the cut for this week (because I’d done all my calculations before she posted it. Ha ha.)

then i was like, wait, why is veronica not part of this???? veronica doesn’t get tossed aside because she’s in your way, babes, nope. give our girl ronnie some credit here. so then i searched archie x veronica and filtered for view count:

there’s a chance, that maybe, just maybe, that all of your likes/interactions across social media is more concentrated on the smaller amount of posts because your ship has less content overall (i think this might be true with the varchie videos, there are less of them so the hit count gets concentrated overall) whereas bughead has a much larger reach. now, true, that requires simple logic to be applied and realizing the trends of concentrations of demographics being used across each social media site along with users creating multiple accounts, etc. 

(no, this obvs doesn’t include social data for other sites like twitter and insta, i don’t even use instagram and my twitter is professional in capacity, i’m not on there liking pics or commenting on entertainment media)

Day 3: Awkward Date

“Should we call her? I feel like we should call her. It’s 10 PM.” He mutters, reaching for his phone on the coffee table. She looks up from her book, with a smirk on her lips.

“Would you want your parents to call you in the middle of a date?” He sends her a pointed look. “Fine, your parents wouldn’t even have known. But, having had the experience of a mother who spied on my first date, she had a wig and everything by the way, I think we should just let it be.”

He sighs, sitting back down on the couch. “Don’t laugh at me.” He mutters and she smiles.

“I think it’s adorable, baby.”

“I promise this is not a macho thing, but the thought of some fifteen year old kid hurting our baby makes me want to go all Serpent King on someone.”

“Please don’t, you were so extra.” She smirks, putting her book down and walking from the armchair to the couch so she can straddle him. “The switchblade is still hot though.”

He laughs softly. “Mmmh, is this your way of distracting me from the reality of our princess going on her first date?”

“Is it working?”

“It always works, Betts.” She smiles, pressing her lips to his.

His hand is in her shirt when they hear the key turning on the door and they both pull away. Betty’s got an excited grin on her face when she jumps off his laugh, skipping to the hall, dragging him.

“Bug?” Betty calls out. “How was it? How was the date?”

Their daughter looks up with a blush in her cheeks. “Kind of awkward.” She shrugs.

Betty frowns. “What happened?”

“No, it was great, I mean, it was fine, fun even, I just I-“ Charlotte sighs softly, clearing her throat. “Can we talk in the living room?” Betty and Jughead shade look before nodding their heads, moving to sit on the couch while Charlotte takes the armchair.

“What is it, sweetie?” Betty questions.

“You can tell us anything.”

Charlotte laughs softly. “Yeah, I know.” She pauses. “The date was awkward because I sort of realized something. I think I’ve known for a while really but I just wanted to be sure I guess.” Looking down again her hands, she smiles a little. “We had fun, but he was way too nervous and trying too hard to get me to like him. But I...I don’t really like him. As a friend it’s fine, but I just...we were having dinner and there was this girl who goes to my school and she was our waitress. And she’s really pretty.” Charlotte breathes. “I guess what I’m trying to say is I don’t really like boys. And I kinda scored a second date.” Laughing softly, she lifts up the receipt. “She slipped me her number.”

Betty laughs loudly, as Jughead cheers for their daughter. “That’s my girl!” He yells out, crossing the distance to tackle her to the armchair.

“Dad! Ah! Stop!” Charlotte laughs loudly as Jughead picks her up from the chair, spinning her around. “Okay, okay, we’re cool!” She calls out and looks at Betty. “Mom?”

“Come here.” Betty opens her arms with a huge smile on her lips and Charlotte falls into her. “Do we get to stalk this girl’s social media?” She smirks.

“And I’m the helicopter parent!” Jughead rolls his eyes.
