CBC to Celebrate Gordon Lightfoot on Canada Day
- July 1 broadcast to feature 2024 tribute show at Massey Hall
Canada will celebrate not only itself, but native son Gordon Lightfoot, on Canada Day.
On July 1, the CBC and Massey Hall, in partnership with Gordon Lightfoot Estate, will broadcast the 2024 Celebrating Gordon Lightfoot tribute concert nationwide and worldwide on CBC’s YouTube channel.
The gig featured Blue Rodeo and the Lightfoot Band backing such artists as Allison Russell, Burton Cummings, Alex Lifeson and Geddy Lee, Sylvia Tyson and others.
The resulting film is “tightly edited” down to 90 minutes and includes all performances, though not in the same order they unfolded.
Lightfoot, who died in 2023, played Massey more than 170 times, more than any other artist.

Oh nothing, just a 1979 comedy special on musician Burton Cummings in which Rick shows up briefly as a kitschy interviewer who speaks pseudo Spanish/Italian gibberish. As you do. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
