Zuko had no idea what was making him so brave, but he was willing to let it carry him to the bitter end. He set his drink down on the table. 

“Mai.”

“Mhmm?” She didn’t look away from the TV, where Paul Hollywood was telling a poor baker that she had overworked her bread dough.

“Mai.”

No response this time, and now the metal straw sticking out of her wine glass was between her lips.

“Mai.”

“Zuko, for the love of God, I’m right here, what—” She finally turned towards him and, before he lost his nerve, he surged forward to kiss her. He allowed himself to savor her warmth against him, his eyes fluttering shut.
