#but I'm not counting it because it wasn't JOKER trying to fool Bruce. it was someone else

I love how both batman and joker pretended to be each other's henchman/ally at some point and both expressed some type of fondness towards the other. batman pretending to be one of red hood's henchmen and joker pretending to be eric border.
Hah, you're right. They both went undercover to deceive the other. Joker pretending to be Eric Border will never cease to be amazing to me though, because... imagine. You're Batman. You've been fighting this guy for almost two decades and he's been pulling some absolutely terrifying shit, but you thought you knew him. You thought you could at least predict how he worked, even if you didn't really understand him. But then the fucker shows himself capable of fooling you so thoroughly you hadn't had the slighest clue it was happening. I am 10000% sure Bruce's trust issues and paranoia got so much worse after this, and let's be real, who could blame him.
But, digression aside, I must mention that Bruce has technically done this more than once! Some of their first encounters contain a lot of disguises, interestingly. Brubaker's Batman: The Man Who Laughs is the most prominent modern Joker introduction arc, but before that there was O'Neill's Images. The stories are similar, with the exception of Bruce being way flirtier and fooling Joker with a disguise for the first and last time ever as far as I know:
Tumblr media
Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight #50
Almost immediately after, Batman Confidential: Lovers and Madmen takes place. It's basically the aftermath of Joker being brought into custody after trying to poison the Gotham reservoir. And Bruce, in an attempt to understand how Joker's mind works, disguises himself as Matches Malone and gets himself put in a cell next to him. But Joker clocks him immediately:

Batman Confidential #24
And then, in Batman: Joker Time, Bruce goes undercover in Joker's gang once more, impersonating an unfunny comedian (who he pays off to stay in a hotel as he does it). If you ask me, the comic paralelling them "putting their face on" together is... something:
Tumblr media
Batman: Joker Time #2
But a truly hilarious thing happens:
Tumblr media
Batman: Joker Time #3
So basically, Joker had been expecting that Batman would pull this move, and asked someone to keep an eye on the people in the gang. And he immediately figured it out, because Bruce-in-disguise-as-Oscar was too funny. Joker didn't even need to see Bruce to identify him.
All in all, Joker kind of wins when it comes to figuring out Bruce's true identity. I'm only counting times in which Bruce or Joker deliberately tried to fool the other, and not... cases like temporary amnesia (e.g., Batman #48 or Going Sane). This is one of the most interesting aspects of Batjokes, and one that certainly is a big drive behind Bruce's obsession with Joker-- the fact he doesn't truly know Joker. Joker himself mocks him about it more than once, but most recently in Endgame:
Tumblr media
Damn, this ended up way longer than expected. But I hope this was a fun answer, Anon!

Genre : Drama Angst Angry Issue Jealousy
Summary : Bruce having Investigation The Joker but it's turned into something else because..
Word count : 3.4k
Bruce walked inside, his adrenaline still pumping through his veins, as he saw the Joker in the interrogation room behind bars, surrounded by Gordon and his teammates
The Joker looked disheveled and angry, his face scarred and twisted from the events of the past night and Gordon shot him a look of satisfaction, and Bruce couldn't help but smile at the sight
It was a bittersweet moment, but one that he knew was necessary and had been long overdue
"So the bat is here" - the joker explained mockingly trying to play fool
"The one and only" - His Batman voice answered back proudly, his shoulders back and chest up, his hands folded together.
The Joker had mocked him several times in the past, but this time, he was the one under lock and key, unable to escape
The table had turned..
The Joker mocked and taunted him, but he didn't care. Bruce was here to do a job and get it done quickly and effectively but Bruce's mind was focused and his goal clear and it's was investigate the clown and bring him to justice
Without the presence of Gordon and the other officers, the room was suddenly much quieter and more intimate as Bruce and the Joker were now alone, faced with only each other’s gaze
The Joker was restrained behind bars, his expression angry and defiant, as usual but Bruce sat across from him, his face emotionless, his eyes searching and observing every detail
"Wanna play a game baty?" - the joker asked him as still trying to get into his skin
"I am not here to play your games" - Bruce replied calmly, his eyes scanning the Joker for clues as his mind worked quickly
He knew this game too well, the Joker's attempts to provoke him and throw him off balance But he was immune to such tricks, his emotions in control, his will to investigate strong and unwavering
He would not be distracted by the Joker's mocking or threats. instead, he kept his stare unblinking and his attention focused on the clown in front of him.
"Let's talk seriously? And we will be honest You always asking yourself why I'm around you like a Nightmare" - The joker explained mockingly as licking his lips by his tongue - "Even when you actually a stranger to me i killed your parents and Yes i don't have a reason more then I'm madness"
"But you didn't ask yourself why I'm still around you even after i killed your parents?" The joker finished softly but honestly
"Don't play mind games with me." - Bruce replied simply, as his eyes remained steady, refusing to be swayed by the Joker's attempts to distort his focus
He knew the Joker was just trying to get under his skin, to throw him off and make him lose his composure and Bruce remained unperturbed, staring directly back at the clown's eyes with a level of resolve and determination
"You're obsessed with me," - Bruce said flatly, his voice unwavering as he continued to stare at the clown
He was unconcerned with the Joker's mocking tone, and focused only on making eye contact and observing his every gesture and expression
"All your attacks, all your crimes have been a plea for attention from me," - Bruce continued his voice calm and steady
"Yes I'm obsessed" - The joker confessed honestly? - "But actually not with you"
Bruce was surprised by the Joker's honesty and seriousness He had always assumed the clown was playing a game with him, twisting the truth and feeding him lies to manipulate him
But this time, the Joker was genuinely being honest, which caught him off guard
"Then with who?" - Bruce asked quickly, curious where the Joker was going with this
The clown was never easy to read or predict, but something about the way he said this was making him think
If the Joker wasn't obsessed with him, then what was he truly obsessed with?
"I'm obsessed with someone I tried to take from a long time" - The joker continue - "but you come and ruin everything"
Bruce was starting to find this conversation much more interesting The Joker was being unusually serious and honest, sharing things he wouldn't normally reveal so openly
"Who are you obsessed with?" - Bruce asked, feeling intrigued by the clown's cryptic explanation
He was curious to get a glimpse of whatever had been driving the Joker's madness and chaos
The Joker was usually guarded and mysterious, so seeing this unexpected side of him was intriguing
"Someone you couldn't live without" - The joker whispered softly and coldly
"Someone you will die for" the joker added softly as looking at him trying to study his expression under the mask
Bruce felt his heart skip a beat when the Joker revealed the hint
"Someone you would die for" and "Someone you couldn't live without", those words hit him like a punch to his heart
It was clear to him who the Joker was talking about, and the revelation made his mind scramble and The last thing he expected was the Joker to reveal he was obsessed with someone Bruce deeply cared about
"Don't you see where my eyes on?" - the joker asked him calmly and seriously
The Joker's words sent chills down Bruce's spine as He understood why the Joker had been targeting him personally, and why the Joker had been focusing his efforts on causing chaos and damage wherever he could
The clown had one singular focus, one all-encompassing obsession, and Bruce knew it had nothing to do with him personally
Instead, he realized the Joker was truly focused on one person that was most important to Bruce
“I know exactly who you mean,” - Bruce finally replied quietly, his voice full of shock and concern
It's was you..
Bruce felt his chest constrict as he realized who the Joker was referring to
You, his faithful sidekick in the war against crime, his girlfriend and future wife
"You're obsessed with her," - Bruce said, his voice barely above a whisper, his heart racing and his stomach filled with dread
The Joker smirked and nodded in acknowledgment, confirming that he was indeed obsessed with You
Bruce watched as the clown's expressions shifted through a spectrum of smugness, amusement, and arrogance, before settling on a twisted delight
The Joker seemed to take a twisted pleasure in Bruce's reaction, in the realization that he, too, was helpless when it came to the one thing that mattered most to him
Bruce's mind was spinning with thoughts and emotions as he grappled with the truth of the situation
"Your precious girl, your partner in crime fighting, your love, your everything, your future wife. I want her, and she will be mine." - the joker explained honestly and firmly
The Joker's words pushed Bruce over the edge, his pent-up fury boiling over, and he suddenly sprang into action
He grabbed the Joker tightly and held him with all his strength, a look of passion and jealousy in his eyes as he saw red
But the Joker didn't even flinch. He just laughed, his eyes filled with amusement as he watched Bruce's emotions run rampant
James Gordon and his team watched from the glass window, growing increasingly nervous and concerned as they saw Bruce's emotional reaction
Bruce's anger and fury overwhelmed him, and he unleashed a whirlwind of words as he shouted furiously at the Joker
"Don't dare you" - he began, his voice shaky and quivering with fury, - "I will not let you take her, she is mine! She will always be mine!"
The Joker just laughed at his outrage and intensity, seeming thoroughly entertained by the sight of Bruce's rage he was really enjoying this so much
"What if I Touched her?" - The joker asked him teasingly but actually he was playing on his soft spot
Bruce's heart skipped a beat at the thought of the Joker touching you He knew in his heart that the Joker was taunting him, trying to provoke an emotional reaction
But the thought that he could ever touch you, even out of revenge, sent a wave of pure, unadulterated rage through Bruce's body
It was enough to push him over the edge that he barely had control over and Bruce was always the calm and rational one, but that rule was being tested now
"You might as well have signed a death wish if you even think about it." - Bruce shouted aggressively, his expression darkening with rage
He could barely control himself, his anger growing with each word as The Joker's twisted smile only seemed to grow wider as he saw the extent to which he had driven Bruce.
"Touching her, hurting her, or even thinking about her in a bad scenario, you will be facing the darkest days of your life." - Bruce continued, his voice getting colder and angrier
"Oh please listen" - The joker begged gently - "I was meaning making her mine not hurting"
Bruce suddenly stopped and realized that the Joker's words hadn't been about harming you but about making you his own
The thought of the Joker taking you away from him, using you as his twisted plaything, was even worse than if he had threatened to hurt you and Bruce couldn't let that happen, he couldn't allow the Joker to take you from him
He stepped closer, his grip on the clown tightening, his fury growing
"That's so worse" - he whispered coldly and angrily
"Why?" - The joker asked him calmly acting like a fool again as licking his lips by his tongue
But suddenly Bruce had enough and punched the joker making James Gordon and his teammates shocked from everything started turning into something else
James Gordon tried to get inside the room but Bruce put a chair against the door making it so hard to open the door
The Joker didn't even flinch at the punch, seeming to find the sudden burst of rage hilarious He was enjoying himself, savoring Bruce's rage and watching his opponent lose control
But the Joker knew Bruce was getting dangerously close to the edge, and he finally decided to act
“Enough” - he screaming angrily and firmly, as he effortlessly moved the chair aside, blocking the door open like nothing
“She may be yours, but you sure as hell cannot control her like a possession” - the Joker mocked him
The Joker's words cut deep
Bruce couldn't deny that you was your own person, with your own desires and choices. And if you desired the Joker in more ways than one, there wasn't much he could do about it
"But she wouldn't" - he said defensively, wanting to deny the possibility
"She wouldn't fall for someone like you, someone twisted and manipulative," - Bruce continued hastily, wanting to defend you and his faith in you
The Joker's words pierced straight to Bruce's heart
It was his deepest fear, and he had never allowed himself to express it or even admit it
But in that moment, the Joker could see the fear beneath the surface, the insecurity that Bruce had kept buried inside
"What if she will stop loving you? What will you do then?" - The Joker mocked him, enjoying the sight of seeing him doubt himself and his trust in you
Bruce had never expected the Joker to attack him where he was most vulnerable: his relationship with you
And now, the joker had successfully sowed a small seed of doubt into Bruce's mind and exposed an underlying insecurity he had been suppressing
James Gordon and his teammates knew just how deep this struck Bruce because they knew him so well
They were aware of his fear of losing you, and now, the joker had exploited it ruthlessly
Because they know the soul of Bruce..
Bruces' anger was boiling over in a sudden surge, a flurry of emotions and thoughts running rampant through his head
His heart broke when he considered the possibility of losing you, of someone else having you...and the Joker saw just how deep it cut him
Anger filled every inch of his being, so intense that it threatened to rip him apart from the inside out as This rage was so powerful that it almost overwhelmed Bruce, sending him into a state of rage and hate that was pure animalistic
"Shut up" - Bruce shouted angrily making the joker eyes widen
Bruce's rage was unstoppable
His screams angrily, his voice growing muffled and distorted through the mask, filled with pure rage This wasn't the calm and composed Bruce Wayne that was accustomed to facing off against the joker
This was primal, primitive fury that was almost out of his control
The joker was pushing him further and further, feeding him anger with each word of twisted mockery, pushing him further and further into his rage
"You won't take her from me," - he shouted, his voice cracking with emotion and rage
And suddenly The joker took blow after blow as Bruce let out his fury on his opponent, his fists flying wildly and mercilessly
Bruce didn't care about the consequences, he didn't care about getting hurt
His only concern was getting to the joker. He was filled with such a blind rage that he was driven to a state of animalistic aggression where nothing could stop him
He threw punch after punch, each hit fueled by immense anger, raw emotion, and the desperate desire to protect you
James Gordon and his teammates watched with bated breath, wanting to step in but not knowing if it would be a good idea right now
James Gordon and his team kept a close eye on the clock, knowing that it was almost time for you to arrive at the station
James knew they could not just stand by and let the situation escalate, but at the same time, they did not want to disrupt a dangerous confrontation
As the minutes passed, the tension in the room grew, and everyone was filled with an overwhelming sense of anxiety
No one knew what was going to happen, but the Joker was clearly enjoying the drama he had created and seemed eager to see how things played out
And suddenly you opened the door..
You entered because Bruce had asked you before to come but you never thought when you enter you will just seeing him trying to kill the joker like a beast
"Bat what are you doing" - You shouted as running to him trying to stop everything happening right now
Bruce heard your voice, causing him to freeze in his tracks as he felt your embrace, which stopped him from his intense assault on the joker
The joker watched with interest and amusement as Bruce finally stopped his fury and was finally pulled by your love
The Joker knew that this moment was important for the future of all three of them: Bruce, You, and himself
Bruce was still consumed with rage but he finally froze when he felt the warmth from her embrace
"Baby you shouldn't stopping me" - Bruce whispered softly but sadly
"Please calm down" - you explained calmly as rubbing his arms - "remember your rule about not killing any criminals no matter what"
"This bastard deserves to die" - Bruce shouted angrily as his rage overrode any logical thoughts, any self-control
It's made The joker just kept on grinning, amused by the display of rage and jealousy that was so rare coming from Bruce
The clown saw the struggle that was taking place between you and Bruce, between logic and emotion, between reason and his heart
"Oh, I'm sure he'll be just fine" - the Joker mocked in response to your words, taunting Bruce even more
"Please tell me what happened" - you asked him calmly and worriedly about him
"This bastard tried to take you from me" - Bruce replied to you harshly, still caught up in his rage and jealousy
The joker's grin remained in place, mocking, taunting, enjoying the tension and struggle between the both of you But he had also succeeded in sewing doubt and insecurity into Bruce's mind, pushing right to the breaking point
It's clear that your presence had only added to the problem, causing Bruce's rage to boil even further because he doesn't want you now to be here and let the joker eyes get you
"Listen" - You whispered as cupped his masked face - "you know him..he doesn't love anyone"
Bruce wanted to believe you and actually he needed to believe you
The truth was that he was afraid that the joker might have been right, that you might leave him for the Joker and The idea of losing you made him feel like he couldn't breathe
The way you was holding his face, looking into his eyes, you was bringing him back from the edge.
But the doubts were still there, the seeds of insecurity planted by the joker and now taking root in his mind
"Bruce he killed your parents don't you think he can kill you too by few lies" - you whispered as looking into his eyes
He listened to your words, his heart still racing but now calming somewhat
You made a good point about the joker being just and evil and a killer, able to kill with a few simple words But the fear and doubt had still taken hold in his mind
What if you is falling under the Jokers spell What if the joker is twisting the truth?
The possibility of losing you terrified Bruce so much
"But what if you" - he whispered softly trying to continue talking but you cut him off
"No" - you cut him calmly as put your finger on his lips- "Before meeting you i didn't choose the joker because i don't want him"
"Same thing after being with you Bruce I'm not just your girlfriend or your future wife" - you continue - "I'm your sidekick and i will never choose villain or someone killed your parents"
Bruce's face softened at your loving words He knew you was right, no matter what the joker had thrown at him, you still chose him.
You still stood by his side, never wavering
His fears might have been planted in his head, but his heart had not wavered. You was his and he was yours in every way
You was his love, his soulmate, and his everything you never failed to fill his heart with pure joy and love
Finally Bruce had let go of the intense rage that had consumed him
He hugged you back tightly, enjoying your touch and feeling your warmth against his body.
There was no more doubt, no more fear, and no more jealousy It was just the two of you finally reunited in peace, love, and trust
The joker was surprised by this sudden shift in mood He had expected Bruce to stay in his rage and continue attacking him
But the Joker's plans were thwarted and his scheme failed because you came in the perfect time
"What the fuck" - the joker asked the both of you mockingly but angrily - "come on get mad again'
"Shut Up clown" - Bruce replied calmly but with a coldness that seemed to radiate off of him
The joker smiled at him in amusement He could see that he had pushed the right buttons in the past, but his time of tormenting the Bat was over
Bruce was done with the madness, the anger, the jealousy, and the manipulation. And he wasn't going back to that place
"I have realized something" - Bruce replied firmly in a surprisingly calm tone - "you can lie and manipulate, but my heart can not be fooled.
The Joker was taken aback by his calmness and confidence, a sharp contrast to his explosive rage just moments before
"You can try to mess with my mind as much as you want, but it won't work" - Bruce continued, his voice still firm but without the rage that only moments earlier had defined him
"With all my regards" - you explained politely as smiling cutely showing your white teeth
And then you just kicked the joker off on his face it's made Bruce was taken aback but couldn't help but smile at your sudden attack
The joker had always been able to provoke Bruce into a rage, with one comment here and a smirk there, but you as his girlfriend had just turned the tables
Your kick had been so sudden and unexpected that it caught the Joker off-guard as The joker stumbled backwards as her kick hit, and he cursed aloud in frustration and anger
Yes you was too kind and beautiful to made everyone falling in love with you and Bruce was the one who loved you more then anything or anyone else
Everyone can fall in love with you but Bruce own you because even good people like him love you
And even bad people like the joker can too but the joker type was..

Plans For The Future
You're seated on your knees, on the floor, before the coffee table where several sheets of paper are scattered around. The possibilities for your future. You left the League in the cave to discuss their business and came up here to do this. But it's been twenty minutes since you wrote down the last option, and you're still clueless.
“Any luck?” Barry is suddenly seated across from you, the wind he makes with he's speed messing with the papers. But he quickly gathers them again.
“No,” you mutter, feeling a little defeated. Seconds later the others are here too, and as if they were told to, they sit all around the coffee table, on the floor. Expect for Bruce, who sits on the couch, his legs near you.
“Isn't there anything you would like to do?”
“I can't really picture myself doing anything.” Running a hand through your hair, you sigh.
“You were so excited about it in the cave. What changed?" Diana asks, and you notice how everyone seems focused on you. In the last week, since they got back from Washington, the League seems very interested in you. There's a lot of effort to make you feel comfortable, and engage you in their conversations.
“Am I going crazy or are you guys like... Trying to make me get used to normal human interaction again?” Crossing your arms, you have your answer by the way they all exchange a glance and then stare at Bruce. “I knew it.”
“How did you find out?”
“Well, right now everyone is literally seated around the coffee table with me. Except for this weirdo here.” You elbow Bruce's leg, making Barry and Arthur giggle. “You're planning to take me out, aren't you?”
“You're very perceptive.” He says as he moves to seat on the floor with you, an arm around your shoulders. “I've been thinking about it for a while.”
“Do you think I can deal with the real world?” You ask him in a lower voice. You haven't been on the streets yet, and you're not sure how you'll feel among the people.
“Yes, I do.”
“You know people will think Bruce Wayne has a girlfriend, right? If we go out and you do things like hold my hand...” You bet it won't take half an hour for his name to be on the headlines again, and the news channels will talk about it. The world will know about your existence, and every girl who has her eyes on Bruce will know they lost their chance. “You'll have to keep a distance.”
“(Y/N), we're dating. I won't keep that a secret so yes, people will have to find out eventually.” He places a soft kiss on your nose before his lips connect to yours.
“Uhm... We're still here...” Barry mutters, reminding you of the public.
Weird how it only took half a second for you to forget you have company. “So... Now that I know why you guys are still around, help me find something to major in.”
“Let's see what you have here.” Diana starts, and everyone takes a piece of paper or two. “Doctor?”
“Nope. That was just a joke.” Bending over the table a little, you take the paper from her hand. “Moving on.”
“Nurse," Arthur says.
“Vet.” Clark reads.
“All jokes.” Wanting something isn't enough, you have to feel like you can do it. And you don't think you can.
“If you become a nurse you could patch him up.” Arthur gestures at Bruce who nods.
“Sweetheart if this is what you want you just need to say and I'll help you.”
“Me? A nurse? No way, it's too much for me. I need something easier.” You're not saying you're stupid, but why put effort into something on which you'll probably fail? No need to hurt your feelings.
“So you don't think you're smart enough?” Clark asks and you nod.
“If you weren't smart you wouldn't have survived this long as a criminal. And wouldn't have escaped the prison twice. Or fooled the Joker so many times.” Bruce says, and you tilt your head to the side a little, thinking. It did take some brain to do this stuff, calculations, memorization, and some random knowledge.
“It looks like this is what you want,” Arthur mumbles, elbows on the coffee table.
Nurses help people, and that's the exact opposite of what you did. You never really enjoyed hurting people though, at least not normal civilians.
“Yeah... I've been thinking about being a practitioner nurse.”
“You've been doing some research on the subject then.” Wonder Woman raises an eyebrow.
“Yes. They can diagnose diseases, initiate treatments, and prescribe medications. They're more independent.” Shrugging your shoulders, you lean closer to Bruce. “But I don't know. Maybe we should keep looking into the other options.” Pretending you're not insecure is useless. Building a life is both exciting and terrifying.
“No. I guess we found what you want to do.” Bruce says and kisses your cheek. You bite back a smile, but it escapes anyway. “Anything as long as you're happy.”
“I can die in peace now,” Arthur says, and everyone turns their heads to look at him. He simply gestures at you and Bruce as if it would explain everything. “I lived enough to see Batman being soft with someone. The rest of my life will be dull.”
It took long enough for the funny comments to start. “Let the man be, Arthur. Everyone softens when they find love.” Diana adds.
“Aren't you a little too young to be dating Bruce actually?” Barry asks, shrugging his shoulders. “Just-just saying.”
“I haven't really thought about that,” you say.
“I have,” Bruce admits.
“Obviously. In this relationship you're the morals part.” You start gathering the sheets of paper, making a small pile. “I'm the impulse part.”
“Impulse part?”
“I did kiss you out of impulse. I was trying to control myself for quite a while but the thought of another suicide mission finally made me give in.” Looking at him, you smirk. “What would you do if I didn't kiss you before the mission? Were you planning to tell me about your feelings?”
“Shouldn't we discuss that in private?” He raises an eyebrow, and you give the guys a glance before looking back at Bruce.
“We don't mind. Go on.” Barry mutters, getting an annoyed stare from Diana.
“Let's give them some time." She says before getting up. The others soon follow, but Barry is the last.
“The fast one seems very curious about Batman's love life,” you say in a sassy tone when you're left alone.
“He turned the mission in Washington a nightmare the moment I mentioned you.” Bruce moves closer, caressing your cheek.
“And how was that?”
“I told them we had to make it as quick as possible because I had someone to go back to.” He places a soft kiss on your lips and you can't help but smile. You can't believe that someone was you. “Then he just wouldn't let it go. And yes, I was planning on telling you how I felt.”
“What would you do if the feeling wasn't mutual?” Wrapping your arms around his neck, you move to sit on his lap.
“I was pretty sure you felt something for me.”
“Really? I was trying so hard to hide it.”
“Miss Quinzel. Master Bruce. Dinner is served.” Alfred announces and you're just about to stand up when Bruce lifts you up with him.
“Because that will make Barry stop sassing at you,” you tell him, not even bothering to ask him to put you down. He can carry you all the way he wants. It feels funny though, and good to float like this. But the best part is how close your faces are, so you take the chance to kiss him as he takes you to the dining room.
Dinner goes on very well. The chattering is constant, and you manage to get into the conversations. You do feel like you're getting along with the League. Maybe you'll do well with other people too. If you can deal with the supers, you can deal with regular humans. It gives you hope, makes you a little more excited to go out. For dessert, you have brownies, one of your favorites, with vanilla ice cream.
“(Y/N), you said something about a suicide mission?” Barry asks after Diana gives you more details about the Washington mission. “What was that about?”
“Yeah... It was a terrorist attack in New Mexico. They mounted a base there but we never knew their plans.”
“They send you in a mission completely in the dark?” Diana furrows her eyebrows.
“We're the Suicide Squad. Well, that's what we call ourselves. The official name is Task Force X.” You move in the chair a little, but you notice you're not as uncomfortable as you were before talking about it. Bruce says you have to accept who you were in order to be free to restart. Trying to ignore it will only allow the past to haunt you. “When the soldiers can't deal with it but it's still not bad enough to call the heroes, they send us. The whole point is that it doesn't matter if we die in the process. The order is to finish the mission. We're... Spendable.”
“I never heard of anything like that,” Clark says, shrugging his shoulders.
“Nobody is supposed to know. But it doesn't matter anymore. The mission was a success and I'd be fine with it if the guards didn't beat me up on my way back here.” You say it without really noticing what it means, but by the way they exchange glances with each other, there are questions in their heads. “Some of them knew me from Belle Reve. So they knew I was going back somewhere they wouldn't be able to punish me for my crimes. They said it was a taste from home.”
“Everyone who was in that van was fired.” Bruce's voice is heavy with anger. “And I doubt they'll get any other job in Gotham.”
“If you're in prison to pay for your crimes, why did they beat you? Isn't the confinement the punishment?” Barry raises his eyebrows, and Arthur nods.
“Uhm... Yes. In any other prison, yes. But Belle Reve is different. It's like we're not on Earth anymore they... They can do pretty much anything they want. Every man and woman who acts as our guards are military or ex-military. Soldiers... And they have so much hate for us.” The memories come back in flashes of lightning, flooding your mind. The pain is still a vivid dream, the darkness is still terrorizing. “I can only speak for myself but I'm sure almost everyone who gets there tries to fight, to run away. I did. And maybe... Maybe I deserved it, maybe what they did was right.”
“(Y/N), don't you think for a second that you deserved what they did to you. Just because someone is a criminal doesn't give them the reason to treat you like an animal.” Bruce takes your hand over the table, and you smile to feel his fingers brushing against the soft skin of the back on your hand.
“They don't treat animals like they treat us.” The acknowledgment is dark and heavy, and you feel as the atmosphere gets tense. The League seems uncomfortable, perplexed.
“What the hell happens in that place?” Diana is the first to speak up after several seconds of deep silence.
“I can only tell what happened to me. By the rumors, it depends on who we are. Killercroc, for example, is left alone in a hole on the ground. Me... I always fought back.” Taking a deep breath, you revisit the endless days you spent in hell. The longest year of your life. The terror was usually suffocated by anger, burning rage, but it was always there, creeping through the walls. “I was kept in the dark. The only light source came from the small gap under the door. It had a blueish glow. My cell was open three times a day, at 10 a.m., 04 p.m., and 08 p.m. The two first were to feed me. They put a straw through my nose all the way down to my throat and fed me with some kind yogurt.” You cringe at the memory, a shiver rolling down your spine. “The last one was the shower. If you can call that a shower... They made me take my clothes off and back up into a concrete wall and blast me with water from a hose. If the weather was hot, the water was ice cold... If it was cold, the water was so hot that it burned my skin.” As you speak, Bruce moves his chair closer to you, putting an arm around your shoulders.
“You don't have to tell us anything if it makes you feel uncomfortable,” Clark says in a low voice.
“No, it's ok... It's good to say it. To... Let it out.” Holding it inside has only screwed you up over and over again. Dealing with it alone has isolated you. And you don't want to be alone anymore. “Before or after the shower was usually when the beat me. Men, women... They didn't really mind if they were a 6ft tall man kicking me. The drugs, the... Several different kids of drugs they gave me numbed the pain, but it was worse, at least to me.” The tears are rolling down now, as you're looking at the table, holding Bruce's hand as if he's your anchor. “I knew my body was being broken, sliced, bones being fractured but I only felt the impact. It's a psychological torture they play alongside the physical one. They liked to know that I was feeling my body being hurt, but I could never feel it... The drugs never wore off, so they never treated to my wounds. I was always left there, in my cell, as the blood dried, as the darkness threatened to suffocate me but I always told myself I was Havoc. I was freaking Havoc and I did not only deserve that, but I also could deal with it. That I was used to the pain...”
“Alright, that's enough.” Bruce raises his voice, and you notice you were yelling. He pulls you close and you hide your face in the crook of his neck.
“I speak for everyone here when I say we're very sorry for everything you've been through,” Diana says, and you feel a hand on your shoulder. When you look up, you see that not only her but all the others are standing around you and Bruce. “And I'm sorry I brought up such terrible memories.”
“Thank you.” Your voice sounds terribly weak, and Bruce dries off some of the tears with his thumb. When you get up, Diana holds both your hands on hers.
“I want you to know that you have me now. To talk, to ask for help, anything.” Your eyes quickly fly through the others when they nod.
“More than Bruce's friend, you're our friend now,” Arthur says.
“So now you not only have friends but superfriends.” Barry steps ahead and pulls you into a hug. You're surprised at the sudden affection, but it feels nice. The others join you soon, and you're in the middle of a group hug.
Not for a single moment in your life you thought you'd ever had anything like this. “Guys, you know you don't have to do this,” you mutter because you can't help but think you don't deserve it, that you're not the victim. Guess you still have a lot to work on, and Bruce is right to still give you some therapy sessions.
“Of course we do. You're an incredible woman who overcame so much. And you truly seem to want to leave the past behind.”
“Clark's right. You're the proof that villains aren't too far beyond repair.” Arthur says with a smile.
“Thanks again.” You're blushing a little because you think they see you as more than what you are now. But it's good to know they believe you.
An hour later, you're on Bruce's bedroom, getting ready to sleep. You're reading about Gotham's University as Bruce brushes his teeth, getting a little confused by how complicated it seems to be accepted there.
“Bruce, all these papers... I don't know if I have them.” You complain, suddenly losing hope.
“I'll deal with them, don't worry.” He comes to the bed, sitting beside you and resting his back against the pillowy headrest. “Worry about studying.”
“And about the fact I'll be surrounded by people all the time.” You sigh, putting the tablet on the nightstand. “It's still confusing, you know. Terrifying sometimes.” You're used to making people fear you, and when that's not possible, they just hate you. Hurt you. You're not sure how you'd manage to stay in between. To be normal.
“The classes only start next semester, so you'll have some months to get used to people.” Bruce pulls you to lie down, and you lay your head on his chest. “Tomorrow we're going out.”
“Are you sure about that?”
“Yes. We'll walk around, buy you some new clothes, eat at a nice restaurant...” He caresses your hair, making it hard to keep your eyes open. “I'll be right there with you, so no need to get anxious.”
“Okay...” Noticing you're a little thirsty, you roll your eyes as you get up. “I need water. Do you want some?”
“No, thanks.”
“I'll be right back.” Crawling out of the bed, you make your way downstairs, straight to the kitchen. You hear low voices, so you walk slower, making sure you won't interrupt anything. When you get there, you see it's Diana and Barry, who's eating your ice cream. “Hey, guys,” you announce yourself.
“Hi, (Y/N),” Diana says as Barry waves with the spoon.
“You know this ice cream is mine, right?” Raising an eyebrow, you try to look mad. It apparently works because he gives an apologetic look and lowers the spoon.
“Sorry.” He mutters as you walk around the island, getting a spoon for yourself, sitting beside him and starting to eat too.
“Relax. It seems that I have to share now.” You keep the sarcastic tone, but Barry still doesn't seem to understand. “I'm joking. You can eat it, it's just ice cream.” You smile when he starts eating again. “Don't you want some, Diana?”
“No, thank you.” She raises the mug she's holding. “I usually just drink some tea before going to sleep.”
“Yeah. I just eat. I need a lot of calories.” Barry says with his mouth full of ice cream. “What about you?”
“Actually I just came to get some water. Bruce is waiting for me upstairs.” You forgot about the water, but now you feel thirsty again, so you get a glass and head to the fridge.
“You guys sleep together?” He asks.
“Barry.” Diana reprimands him, and that makes you giggle a little.
“We share the bed.” Shrugging your shoulders, you speak as you pour some cold water on the glass, closing the fridge and making your way back to where you were seated. “I have... Nightmares. They were more often before, but they still come. But when I'm with Bruce it's just... It's better.” You feel safe, secure, but you're too shy to tell them that. It's too much that you're telling about the nightmares, but it's a good sign that you're able to open up, even if it's just a little bit.
“You love Bruce, don't you?” Diana asks in a low voice.
Looking down at your half-full glass of water, you nod. Love isn't the word you use to express your feelings for Bruce, but that's just because you're way too scared to let those three words flow out. ‘I love you.’ You've been biting your tongue for quite a while now. Those words hold power, you know it, and you're scared that he doesn't feel the same way. “Don't tell him,” you beg, looking up at Diana.
“Why?” As she asks, Barry takes the ice cream and gets up, leaving the kitchen.
“Girl talk.” He mumbles on his way out. And yes, you feel a little more comfortable knowing it's just Diana.
“Because maybe it's too soon and... If he doesn't feel the same I'm afraid it'll push him away.” Your feelings for Bruce only grow, and even though being in love with someone is something new, you know how things should play out. Or you think you do. The fact that he's Batman and you're Havoc, a villain he tried to catch before, only makes everything worse.
“I know Bruce. He would never officialize a relationship if he wasn't one hundred and ten percent sure of his feelings.” She moves from her place at the table to seat across from you on the island. “And I understand that what you did before may get in the way but it only makes me even more sure about his feelings towards you. So yes, I think he loves you and there's no reason for you to be so scared.”
Taking a deep breath, you try to accept that. “How could he love me?” You inquire in a low voice because you can't help but go back, to remember who you were and what you did. You do regret it, and you do want different things now, to have a whole new life. But... Sometimes the fear of losing Bruce hits hard, and you start going back to your shell.
“Why don't you let me answer that?” His voice makes you jump, and you stand up abruptly. Your heart beats so fast that you can hear it on your ears, like drums.
“I'll get some sleep. Good night, (Y/N). Bruce.” Diana stands up and leaves the kitchen, as you stand there, looking at Bruce.
“You weren't supposed to hear any of that,” you mumble.
“But I'm glad I did. Let's head upstairs. We need to talk.” Nodding, you start following Bruce. “I need to make things clear with you, sweetheart.”
