okay random 4am rant time, don't take it too seriously, but: people need to recognize there's a difference between "bad worldbuilding" and "worldbuilding styles you personally don't like."

bad worldbuilding is, for example: internally inconsistent, bigoted, or something else that messes up the plot or characterization of the story itself. sloppy. careless.

things that are *not* bad worldbuilding:

minimalism.

i've been thinking about this in the first place because i saw a post about the Murderbot Diaries a while back (don't know who made it, don't care; this ain't personal) saying the worldbuilding in those books is bad and lazy. to me, as an avid sci-fi reader and writer, that is clearly not true. but i understood why they thought this. the series uses extremely minimalist worldbuilding which intentionally withholds a lot of detail, in a way that is consistent with the (nonhuman, robot, depressed robot) first-person POV. this could also be a feature of the author's writing style in general—i haven't read her other works—but i wouldn't bet too much on it.

the signature of intentional minimalism is that there *are* details about the speculative setting—they're just doled out very thoughtfully and sparingly. the intent is to leave you a little hungry for more. it's to make you think very carefully about the details you do have. this is best suited to stories that already have elements of psychological and/or mystery plot types. the worldbuilding you do see should still be believable, internally consistent, and have interesting implications if you think about it a bit. but you are for sure going to have to think harder to get it.

if you're not in the mood, i will concede, a minimalist style definitely comes off as a bit dry. if you are in the mood, it's relaxing.

whimsy.

this is a big one for sci-fi fans in particular. see: the constant debate about whether any particular story is "hard" or "soft" sci-fi, and whether soft sci-fi is bad, etc etc. but worldbuilding doesn't have to be realistic to be good. you're allowed to have Jedi and humanoid aliens and time travel in your sci-fi. you're allowed to have historical anachronisms and astrology and po-ta-toes in your fantasy. whether or not they're silly isn't the deciding factor on how "good" these worldbuilding elements really are.

the key thing is tonal consistency. you've got a serious high-fantasy setting with its own strict, un-Earth-like theology and magic system, and you throw Santa Claus in there? yeah, that's not gonna land well. but C.S. Lewis can get away with that in Narnia just fine. why? because the Chronicles of Narnia are whimsical children's stories with a strong Christian/Western mythological influence already, and their central conceit is a crossover between the mundane world and the magical world. of course Santa can cross over too. it's whimsical, but it's not actually random. (and if you ventured into straight-up comedy, you could get away with random too. as long as it's funny.)

the unreliable narrator.

i don't have a good example for this off the top of my head (maybe Murderbot again? idk, i'm sleepy, fill in your own) but i'll tell you how to recognize when this is done well.

by definition, an unreliable narrator has some key misconceptions about their own world. so how do you tell what's going on as a reader? how do you know the writer isn't equally confused?

you connect the dots. solve the puzzle. in practice this is similar to reading a minimalist setting—but instead of just sparse clues, you also have a boatload of red herrings. you can catch some of these misleading details by comparing them to your real-world knowledge and saying "wait, this doesn't add up." other times, the false clues intentionally trick you by subverting those real world expectations.

the trick is in the consequences. regardless of what the narrator says, their actions should still have logical consequences. there should be things going on that the POV character doesn't know about. the character will be forced to learn and adapt their narrative because of these shifting circumstances. you can catch them in a lie. the inconsistencies themselves tell a story.

i'm gonna stop myself there because this post is long and i oughtta be sleeping. just. this is a distinction worth making. is it really bad worldbuilding, or is it simply not the genre you're craving today? learn the difference for your own sake. you'll have an easier time realizing if a story is something you'll find enjoyable to read, regardless of its actual quality.

This one focuses a lot on Steve but I really like him and Peter's relationship in it, and I think this is great Peter Parker characterization. TW for discussions of depression and suicide, it gets a bit dark!

5 Times Spider-Man Saved an Avenger's Ass (and 1 Time They Saved Him) by TunaFishChris - this fic showcases how strong and capable Peter is, he's definitely a BAMF. I really like this genre where the Avengers know Spider-Man but not Peter Parker, makes Peter feel more independent and mature like in the comics.

It takes just a tiny taste of superpowers for Peter to decide he doesn’t want to put up with his horrible foster father anymore—the streets are infinitely more appealing. All he wants is to be Spider-Man anyway.

So he leaves, simple.

Simple, that is, until Iron Man needs Spider-Man’s help.

Heavy TW for this one, mind the tags. This is a popular fic and for good reason. A very mature and realistic portrayal of the foster care system and homelessness. The Peter angst is really great and I could barely put it down, that boy needs a hug so bad.

Indoctrination by phoenixon - The Avengers thought they were on a typical assignment: Infiltrate the Hydra base and find the weapon. What they didn't expect was the small boy raised by Hydra that they found instead. And they definitely didn't expect him to stay at Avengers Tower or how he somehow wormed his way into their lives. As for Peter, he just wants to be good and obey what the Hydra men told him so he doesn't get in trouble.

I just really love hydra Peter changing into a sweet and intelligent boy once he's rescued and safe, and how all the Avengers take up such heart-warming parental roles around him.

out there, living in the sun by Hailfire_73 - The Avengers rescue Peter from a Hydra base ran by his father, Richard Parker, except Peter doesn't really see it as a rescue, and has trouble settling into a new life away from Hydra and his father at the Avengers compound. OR - Peter learns how to be an actual teenager, live life, and put his abusive past behind him, and Tony learns how to be a father.

Hydra Peter but he's most definitely a traumatized and moody teenager. I really enjoyed Peter's character arc and the exploration of his trauma. It felt more realistic the way his journey isn't just a straight or clear path. He's more mature in this one and it was a really compelling read, balancing the angst with some humour and fluff. Loved the ending.

Tinker, Tailor, Spider by Bergen - Tony is roped into a mission to transport a teenager to safety. But when things go south, it soon becomes more and more puzzling who the teenager is and what ‘safety’ means for him.

I really enjoy that the author doesn't water Peter being hydra down. Yes he is a highly skilled assassin and a badass who's trauma pervades his every thought and decision. Made me fall in love with the Tony, Pepper, Morgan and Peter as a family dynamic. Super domestic while still highlighting Peter's troubled past.

Listen, just about every other month I find and reread your pricegraves fic where after graves betrayal he would do anything for price to forgive him, leading to some toe curling edging and overstimulation.

If you had it in you, another fic with other characters or pricegraves again, featuring edging and overstimulation would be lovely. Love your writing and that one is definitely one of my favorites. Graves smirked at Price. "I threw Shepherd under the bus and you're mad at me? I'm the reason you could kill the guy."

Price hated that Graves was right but what he hated more was that Graves was saying all of this with his suit half undone. "How did you know I killed him? I did just a few hours ago."

"Heard he died. You're here. I'm no fool, Price." Graves drank from the shot glass he had. "Come to kill me too?"

"Considering it."

"Don't blame you. I'd kill you if I had the chance."

Price tapped his fingers on the table, looking him over. He was attractive. Especially like this. His hand was on his inner thigh, almost... posing.

Graves was posing.

Price started to notice the little details. His hair was the hot bed head messy, his shirt had been opened to expose his chest and the fucking whiskey glass.

Graves looked at him through soft lashes. "John. Are you going to kill me or keep staring?"

Price hadn't told anyone he'd be there. He doubted any of them would care if he added Phillip Graves to the list, but still. None of them expected it. Nor would they know that he even went there.

"Keep staring."

Graves sighed. "You come here. Dressed like that. Stupid fucking beanie." He drank the rest of his glass and set it down. "And all you're going to do is stare?"

Price swallowed and crossed the room, putting the gun to Graves's temple. Graves just smiled at him.

"I'm not drunk, don't worry. Just got a taste." He licked his lips and Price almost growled as he kissed him. His tongue darts out to taste the whiskey.

It's his favorite.

Price groaned and kept licking at him, trying to devour him. Graves stayed lax for now and let Price grab him and move between his legs. "Oh Captain, my Captain." He teased when Price went for his throat, nipping and biting.

Price hated how put together he acted. Just once, he wanted to Graves to act as deranged and feral as Price felt. He pulled at his clothing but didn't undress him yet.

"You can, John. Won't tell you no."

Price only finished unbuttoning Graves's shirt and pants, leaving everything still on. He knelt down and felt Graves's hand fall on his shoulders. "Not going to knock the beanie off?"

"I love your hair but you look... really good like that." There was a hint of breathlessness in his voice that had Price realizing he made the right choice. He looked up at him and Graves blushed a little before Price started to kiss down his stomach.

Graves tightened his grip on the arms of the chair and he looked up at the ceiling as Price gently and carefully used his tongue and teeth to pull his underwear down. He started to mouth at his cock, pleasantly surprised to find that Graves was rather sensitive. He jerked up and groaned at the feeling of Price's beard rubbing against him.

Price put his hand around his throat and fucked him nice and slow. He'd slow down to a crawl when ever Graves started to get close. Teasing him,, letting him get close, so close to the line. He balanced him there, watching him grit his teeth.

Price stopped to let Graves come crashing down, hips furiously working to get them moving again. "Wait, no. John, come on."

it’s kind of funny how i put off reading scum villain for so long after reading and consuming adaptations for mdzs and then reading tgcf. im not really a fan of the fan-service sex scenes in danmei because it just takes me out of the story emotionally, and i had a friend warn me that this was pretty much the case with svsss. but like….not so much? at least not the main story.

to back up, my first introduction to any danmei media was watching the untamed. i fucking LOVED the untamed. it consumed my every waking thought for like a solid month lol. it’s actually hard to describe in hindsight just how captivated i was by wei wuxian and lan wangji. and because i loved it so much, i chose to wait for the english translations to be officially released instead of finding unofficial versions online. in the meantime, i “read” tgcf (skimmed) for the first time (bad idea. i finally reread it though last month for real and damn. not quite relevant though). anyway, when i finally got to book 4 of mdzs, well i knew there was the infamous bathtub scene coming, but i underestimated how much this scene would just…cheapen the entire story for me. and this is my own fault, i know, for taking the untamed so much to heart and not being prepared to engage with such different characterizations of the two characters i adored so much. like nothing could’ve prepared me for the fact that lan zhan was actually a nymphomaniac who was determined to have rough sex with wwx every day…it just made the story feel less meaningful to me. it took away the gravity it developed for me.

so knowing how the sex scenes in mdzs affected me, of course i was skeptical of svsss based on what i’d heard. and well maybe it’s because svsss was so tonally different from mdzs and tgcf, and maybe because i knew something very graphic was coming, but shen qingqiu and luo binghe boning to save the world at the end of the main story actually made…perfect sense?? like it wasn’t even really supposed to be romantic at all and yet it felt 110% more earned and necessary than the scenes in mdzs. which was just really surprising to me.

anyway i don’t make this to start mdzs vs. svsss discourse but more so just to discuss my thoughts on the two as someone who doesn’t particularly enjoy gratuitous sex scenes and reads mostly for romance and plot (personal preference!). i still love mdzs and it’ll always have a special place in my heart, but watching the untamed and getting attached to that version of the story first definitely gave me unrealistic expectations for the source material.

im just rambling about this because im curious if anyone had a similar experience with how they read the mxtx novels? also in discussing the novels, im not giving tooooo much weight to the extras.

i’ll add another probably unpopular opinion that the lack of explicit content in tgcf (ik, due to censorship) actually worked in its favor in terms of emotional impact for me.

so yeah i just wanna know what people out there think of sex scenes in mxtx and their gratuitousness and how that affects the novel for you!!!

we follow older anakin, about nineteen years old, where he reunites with padme and they fall in love. the cracks of the dark side's influences are beginning to show.

star wars: clone wars

this is the mini-series released in 2003-2005 to depict anakin's journy throughout the beginning of the clone wars to prepare audiences for star wars: revenge of the sith coming out in 2005. it has since been de-canonized and replaced with the clone series that comes out in 2008. it is still worth the watch. anakin's voice actor is supremely talented and sounds a lot like hayden christensen. albiet he is dramatic, as it is a kid's show, i still very much enjoy his characterization. it's actually pretty funny too, it did get me to laugh a couple times. chapter 24-25 i believe is where anakin undergoes a sort of spiritual awakening, and the ending always makes me cry.

one of my favorite edits to one of my favorite songs from one of my favorite movies. i think about it a lot, especially during the “this was my home.” lyric. hammering in the betrayal of brothers that grew up alongside one another, and if you resonate with that song and movie it provides another layer of context. it’s deliciously painful. when anakin’s side of “you who i called brother,” cuts through and interrupts the melody, impatient to speak about his perspective using ramses’ narrative to do it, it’s acutely accurate to anakin’s character in my eyes.

i have not read this, but i’ve seen hundreds of excerpts over the course of this hyperfixation on tumblr. it’s widely accepted even though it’s decanonized, and offers insight into anakin’s head that you can’t access with just watching the movie. i thoroughly enjoy and reblog the excerpts i come across, but since i’m not a reader i haven’t picked it up to complete it myself.

i loved this so much. so many good moments that i ate the fuck up. we follow vader in his first year of becoming the sith lord, grappling with identity, past, and recognition. we also get insight into the very sensitive time of jedi eradication, i learned a lot. my favorite parts are when vader has to fight without a saber against clones, make his own red saber by retrieving one from a surviving jedi, and the arc that includes jocasta nu.

this was probably the first sw show i watched after i got back into darth vader in august 2022. reawakened a lot for me, i really enjoyed vader's part in this story. reva is also one of my favorites, and i thought her being a mirror image to anakin in this situation was clever, i thought her backstory was unique and refreshing. but what really shines for me is vader's contribution as both an extension of the emperor and a vessel for his own selfish desires. there are parts where i can see he's more machine than man. there are also some anakin parts as well! which i didn't enjoy as much, funnily enough.

i had played this game back in may 2022 when i visited my sister. she and i used to play lego games together when we were kids, and one of my first video games ever was lego star wars: the video game from 2005 which she introduced me to. it holds a special place in my heart, and i really liked playing skywalker saga even though at this point i hadn't cared about star wars in years. when i got back home i couldn't stop thinking about the saga game so i bought it myself, and then played it so obsessively i didn't do anything else. it got me back in the mood for darth vader so i watched obi-wan kenobi, and one thing leads to another now here i am with a smut blog about anakin skywalker's entire life and his every iteration. i loved the game, i think you should play it even though it's just lego versions of everything, it's still really fun.

The behind the scenes thoughts are literally my food, lifesource, its so good when people not only write characters IN CHARACTER, but also include stuff about their analysis/understanding of the character too.. I'm literally obsessed with breaking down characters and yk, cracking their chrome domes open to see how they work (which admittedly, I am not the best at <_< but I love reading them). What in your mind (in reference to the 66.6 fics) would motivate Alastor to let Val get close to him in the first place? Or was that more you picking these two characters up by the scruff of their necks and plopping them into a hypothetical scenario to explore their character and write some fun intimate thingsTM?

What do you think of the dynamic of Vox and Al vs something like Lucifer and Al? Personally I've noticed that something Alastor craves, behind the mask of his static smiling persona, is attention. He's (at least how I saw it) usually peeved when people don't care about his absence, and seems especially bothered by the King of Hell refusing to really acknowledge him, so he goes out of his way to push Lucifers buttons (like calling himself a father figure to Charlie, IN FRONT OF HER ACTUAL FATHER LOL) whereas with Vox, Vox is literally CONSTANTLY thinking about Alastor. Man literally interrupted his regular TV program to do a segment about how much he totally didn't at ALL care about Alastors dissapearance or the fact that he returned (suree buddy). So Alastor can have more fun with him and annoy him by ignoring and messing with him on purpose.

As for your questions:

1. I'm assuming that was a typo and that you mean Vox (but in case you did mean Val: that was just a funny accident of him walking by the room! Alastor wasn't paying enough attention until it was too late), and to that I say:

I think Alastor allows Vox to take a go at him in canon because he finds Vox's obsession with him to be entertaining, but also because Alastor is kind of a narcissist and that same obsession massively feeds his ego, especially in a political climate that otherwise forgot about Alastor. Vox's whole "Who gives a shit about Alastor coming back?! Haha, now let me have a public meltdown and short out power to the whole city about it! Oh, fuck, why is he back, though?? Can we send a spy in to find out??" is exactly the reaction that Alastor wants every time he mentions his mysterious absence and gets brushed off.

At the same time, Alastor doesn't seem to register Vox as a sincere and genuine threat. He's a big enough fish in the Pride Ring pond that his obsession with Alastor is gratifying, but Alastor's self-absorption also doesn't really allow him to treat Vox as a threat tier above "annoying in a funny way, and also television is stupid." (Perhaps this will change in season 2... :eyes: (or perhaps Alastor will get Even Worse) (please god let him get even worse))

So those two things in combination make Vox the perfect candidate for Alastor to experiment with while maintaining his ego and not feeling particularly threatened. Despite Vox's Safeword 101 talk, Alastor would never put stock into that system with Vox unless he was certain that he himself would be able to back up a 'no' with overwhelming force. Him even considering safewords in the Live On Air! series is less for his own sake and more a politesse he offers on Vox's request to warn Vox to slow the fuck down before Alastor tries to put his insides on the outside.

2. And in direct contrast, we have Lucifer...

... Who Alastor obviously actually cares quite a bit about, because he's a whole nother power tier from both Vox and Alastor, and furthermore and possibly even more importantly, a credible threat to Alastor's relationships and standing in the hotel. I think a lot of discussion I see about Alastor prodding Lucifer seems to talk about how quickly he got annoyed about Lucifer's comments, but that misses the fact that he was pissed off before Lucifer even showed up. He got pissy the moment he saw the welcome sign, actually! And I wager that he was narratively absent for the scene where Charlie actually calls Lucifer because he would have done his best to manipulate her out of doing so had be been there.

And given that the two clearly haven't met before (though obviously Alastor knows of Lucifer - and hates that the inverse isn't true, hah), it's not 100% clear exactly why he's immediately so annoyed, but in my personal view of things and barring something like "he's projecting onto Lucifer because his contract is with Lilith," I think that what we know of Alastor's personality points most strongly to "he liked being the hotel's benefactor and sees it as His Project, and doesn't like the idea that Charlie called daddy for something that she thought mysterious, powerful Alastor couldn't handle." He distracts a lot with obviously-goading comments about practically being Charlie's dad in his duet with Lucifer, but underneath that he puts a lot of emphasis on the work he's done for the hotel and the fact that he's been supporting Charlie and the hotel from the start, so why the fuck is this deadbeat asshole suddenly turning up?!

Tl;dr: Charlie missed her insight roll on Alastor's personal investments and he's sooooo offended - and taking it out on Lucifer!

I think one of my favorite things about both Lucifer and Alastor is that they both sooo obviously belong in the Pride Ring, hahaha.

One of the main reasons ¨White Christmess¨ is such a good episode is because of how simple it is. The main plot is about the characters going through their day trying to find gifts for each other in different ways. There isn't exactly an important lesson about the ¨spirit of Christmas¨ or some great reveal.

There are at least 4 plotlines going on, each one being a thing that is related to the characters involved. For Molly's plotline is her making the christmas preparations for the nursery home seniors and trying to check that everything goes okay, with her worrying about the chances of snowing getting lower as the time passes.

The main plot is about Scratch trying to find the perfect gift for Molly before the day ends since he forgot to get her one. It's overall pretty sweet how Scratch tries everything he can to get a gift for Molly, even trying to make one himself. His interactions with Geoff are cool in this episode as well. Them working together to make a gift for Molly and having a duet song about it was something i didn't fully expect, but it was something i appreciated seeing.

Sharon and Pete have their own side plot that is about promising that they aren't going to get gifts for each other this year only to not do it. Sharon spends most of the day trying to guess what Pete has got to her because she wants to give him something equally important. In some ways Sharon's conflict in this episode parallels Scratch trying to get the perfect gift for Molly. Darryl is also in his typical shenanigans talking with some of his contacts to get something very special for his family too.

Molly sees that it isn't going to snow like she expected to and is devastated because she and the Mcgees worked hard in coming up with the celebration. That's when Scratch realizes that he has a perfect gift for Molly: He flies super high in the sky, letting his ghost ectoplasm body freeze and explode, making snowflakes fall where the Mcgees and the seniors were waiting for the snow. Molly grabs one of the snowflakes (they all have Scratch's face) and Scratch tells to her ¨Merry Christmas, Mol¨

The last scene takes place during Christmas morning. The Mcgees give each other gifts. Darryl gives his, which are implied to be something very rare based on the characters dialogue. Sharon gets a paint kit from Pete and she gives to him a gardering apron. Molly gives to Scratch a ¨Taco Tommy's giftcard¨, something that he gets emotionally moved for. The episode ends with the Mcgee family having a family group hug and Molly wishing Merry Christmas to all of them.

In all ¨White Christmess¨ is a very sweet episode with spot on characterization and some really funny moments. It doesn't try to be something spectacular plot wise, and that's why it works so well. It allows for the Mcgees to have their time to shine, in result giving a memorable christmas special.

The Prologue Past the Epilogue by AVoresmith

Yoohankim, though mostly just JD at the moment. Of all the ORV fics I've ever read, I think this fic comes to closest to imitating the actual writing style of ORV along with nailing the characterizations with pinpoint precision. Also contains a JD kiss chapter that is more intense than any actual nsfw scene they could have wrote. There are some caveats to this recommendation though:

It gets slightly NSFW in the latest chapter.

Biyoo is several hundred years old and is treated as an adult, not a kid. There will be mention of Biyoo in relationships with adult partners -- including implied YJH. In my opinion it's handled tactfully, but it's also something that might turn some people off to this fic, so please be aware!

LGY has a big puppy love crush on KDJ. Obviously completely one-sided, but it's there.

GEN, Doksoo if you squint. OD meets the HSY of his new worldline, and can't help feeling like he knows her from another time, another place. Had to lay down after this one. Solid 999 and SP fam content, as well as typical YHK style cosmic unbreakable bonds.

Yoohankim. A reincarnation AU. I read this one a while back but I found it again recently and it still hits just as hard! The cosmic codependence trio finds themselves trapped in another looping cycle, but as is always the case with them, they always find each other and are okay in the end.

A Short Pause by Je_te_veux

GEN, but can be read as JD. An episode set between 517 and 520, a day in the life of YJH, and having some time to think. JTV is a Chinese writer, and you will need to copy and paste into a translator to read their fics, but genuinely they are one of the best ORV writers I've ever read. This fic is one of the ones I always come back to. Really excellent YJH characterization.

Honey and Ginger by Rivani

Yoohankim. Good old fashioned fluff sickfic! The banter is very well done; the three of them are insufferable <3

Too Many Cooks by SonaSona

Yoohankim. KCom makes dinner. HSY makes herself a nuisance. Sona's prose is incredible, and her characterization of the main trio is impeccable. Light, sweet, with just a touch of the ORV brand melancholy. Yoohan is always funny.

Luna Lovegood is a terrible character in the Harry Potter books but one of the most endearing characters of the movies.

Luna in the books comes across like a total moron. She's quick to anger and be upset when someone says you're nuts, even though nothing she says makes sense. She has her moments where she's kind of interesting but mostly exists to be a goddamn idiot.

At least movie Luna comes across as spacy and absentminded, but wise beyond her years.

The scene where she feeds Thestrals raw meat and tells Harry not to be so quick to push away his friends, because it makes him less of a threat, is genuinely one of the best character establishing scenes in the entire movie series.

It actually flattens every other interaction Harry has with Luna in the books.

It's also funny because they have more chemistry in the one scene than he and Ginny have across the entire series too.

Both in the books and the movies.

Harry pretty much just likes Ginny because she's hot and because she's a jock. She has some funny lines but he's such a non character that it doesn't make sense for her to like him at all.

It's not like Harry is funny or interesting. It's one of the weakest aspects of Harry Potter, that the protagonist has the personality of a sock.

I also think Luna comforting Harry after Sirius died is done better in the movies than the books too.

It might just be the actors or that the director/writers of the movies understood the assignment better than jkr ever did.

Making a spacy character is fine, but one who's just a blathering moron, and never having Harry really appreciate her for who she is, just reeks of bad characterization.

Even that small cute scene where Harry invites Luna to the Slug Party is way funnier and cuter than anything the books ever did with Luna.

I also don't care much for Harry Potter shipping, and never have, but Luna and Neville are weirdly cute in the movies too.

I think the dopey but hard working and earnest character fits with the spacy but wise character pretty well.

They're both oddballs and they had small but interesting interactions here and there, mostly just in the fifth movie.

Anyway.

Tldr, never liked book Luna.

But movie Luna was cute as fuck.

💎 — And if someone he didn’t have feelings for tried teasing or flirting with him, he’d probably just smile, totally oblivious to their true intentions because he’s got a million things on his mind and any attraction for that person isn’t one of them. He just won’t think anything of it.

💎 — But coming from a person he is romantically inclined towards, however…

💎 — Well, he might laugh a lot more at your jokes. You might catch him running a hand through his hair with surprising regularity. Like he’s nervous or something…

💎 — He’ll usually do that classic narrow-eyed Adaman Look towards you when he realizes you’re trying to get a rise out of him. Well, ha! He’s the leader of the Diamond Clan, and he’s more strong-willed than that, thank you very much.

💎 — But okay, you’re really testing him. He’s good at keeping his voice steady, but if you’re around other people there’s no mistaking how his face tints just sliiiightly pink when you talk.

💎 — Walk up to him and twirl his hair while he’s just talking to someone or even just minding his own business, he’ll whip around and give you a MASSIVE glare.

💎 — The “scowl and try to ignore you” is a regular technique of his that usually doesn’t work. Of course, you know him well enough to tell the difference between when he’s flustered and actually mad. Adaman’s face doesn’t go all red when he’s angry.

💎 — He’ll take your first few flirtatious comments in stride but the thicker you lay it on, the less dignified his responses get.

He’s nervous about looking too soft.

4. How do you channel characters' voices and personalities? I watch scenes over and over again, and honestly I find reading other fic helpful. This sounds awful, but reading examples of something that isn't in their voice or matching their personality makes it clearer when it's right.

6. Do you prefer writing shorter, standalone fics or longer, multi-chapter stories? I definitely lean toward one-shots. (And let me just call myself out here... I've written one multi-chapter fic and it's been sitting unfinished for 5+ years 🙈) So if I was to try to tackle another multi-chapter idea, I'd need to have a clear vision for how to have it play out.

8. Do you have any rituals or habits that help you get into the zone? No, but I really should try to create some lol.

9. Have you ever collaborated with someone else on a fic? Yes! It's a fun challenge and I'm excited to do it again!

13. What's the most challenging aspect of writing fanfiction for you? Feeling confident in my ideas. That feels like a stupid thing to say, but I struggle with coming up with ideas for stories. If I have a vision, I can (usually) execute it, but so often I find myself questioning if an idea is worth writing or not. (Also summaries, they're a bitch!)

16. How important is it to you to stay true to the original creator's vision while writing fanfiction? It's extremely important to me. To me, that's the whole point of fanfiction - you love the characters enough that you want to play with them! If you throw their original characterizations out the window, you're just writing original fiction and plugging in the characters' names. [steps down from soapbox]

17. What's the most memorable comment or review you've received on one of your fics? Oh man, can I say all of them??? I truly cannot express how much joy a comment brings, and I absolutely go back and re-read them when I'm feeling down about my writing. My favourite is when someone quotes my work back at me, I swear it makes my face hurt from grinning so hard!

19. What's the most unusual or unique setting you've used? I guess the ski cabin because it's so far removed from Los Angeles?

20. How do you approach action sequences or intense moments? Action scenes are scary, and I'm not super keen on tackling that again - but I will say what helps is (I sound like a broken record on this point) having someone you can bounce things around with, and (as stupid as this sounds) blocking it. I mimed kicking my husband down the stairs to figure out where Lucy's foot would connect with her attacker (and good thing I did, because it was way higher up than I'd guessed!)

22. What role does humor play in your writing? Do you enjoy adding comedic elements to your fics? I don't consider myself a funny person. I try to inject humour into my writing sometimes (depending on the situation), but I'm not sure it's super successful!

23. How do you write endings for your fics? Do you prefer open-ended or conclusive conclusions? I hate endings. Hmm maybe this is my answer for #13. I think sometimes you go into a fic knowing exactly how you want it to end (sometimes even down the closing line), and other times I find myself circling the drain, totally lost on the right way to close it. The story never really ends as far as I'm concerned, so I lean more open-ended I guess? Especially since I tend to write more missing moments.

24. What advice would you give to someone who wants to start writing fanfiction? Don't be afraid to ask for help. Check your grammar (little things like your/you're go a loooong way). And please make sure you're spelling characters' names correctly... But truly just go for it. There's an audience out there for pretty much everything!

26. How do you approach plot twists or surprises in your fics? So I'm absolutely evil and absolutely live for this kind of moment. I still feel a sense of (villainous) pride over the plot twist I threw into the end of the opening chapter of an old fic. It's fun keeping people on their toes!

27. What two (or more) fandoms would you like to see a crossover for? Would you ever write it? Do I have to pick? Because I'm truly not a fan of crossover fics, especially between fandoms! And I don't really watch many other shows right now, so it's hard to say. Chenford getting called in to break up a fight between queens on RuPaul's Drag Race? That's the best I can come up with!

29. Are there any characters, relationships, or general character dynamics you've never written about but would like to try? Nearly everything I've written in this fandom is jut Tim and Lucy. Other characters' involvement has ranged from minimal to nonexistent, so I think it would be fun to play with that more. Top of my list would be to write more Tim and Angela moments, because they're my favourite relationship outside of Chenford.

30. How do you handle writing multiple storylines or subplots? I've never tried!

31. Do you prefer writing from a single character's perspective or switching between different viewpoints? I think I prefer picking a single character and writing from their perspective (still in the third person though), but I'm certainly not opposed to switching back and forth.

32. Have you ever participated in fanfiction contests, challenges/fests? YES! @chenfordsecretsanta, we'll see y'all again next year! And I participated in Chenford Week for the first time last summer!

33. How do you incorporate world-building elements into your fics? I haven't really done this, I tend to just stick within the show's universe.

34. Are there any fic writing tips or tricks you've learned along the way that you'd like to share? If you're unsure about dialogue, say it out loud. It's weird but highly effective. And for the love of god, if you wake up in the middle of the night with an idea (because that's always when it happens) make the note. No, you will not remember it in the morning.

*Minor Spoilers* I feel like every story I post I say is my new favorite, but I do believe this is one of the best post season two imaginings I've read so far. This is honestly riveting and fulfilling for being 36k words. I was fully immersed and engaged in this plot, it's excellently paced. Gets into the plot quickly, but lets us linger when we need to. The characterization flawless, dialogue natural, and is funny as often as it's insightful. The Adam/Yeshua plot I could 100% see happening in Season 3. The way this author handles Christ is so unique and surprising! He's surprisingly much more like Gabriel and the other angels than the kind and forgiving figure we're used to seeing. I do think a big part of my Good Omens obsession comes from being angry with The Church and God. This story delves into that quite a bit, and is part of why I enjoyed it so much. It really understands the themes of Good Omens outside of Crowley/Aziraphale. How humans deserve more than to be judged by black and white standards of morality. It also really knows Crowley and Aziraphale, what their issues truly are and why they have been misunderstanding each other. The hotel scene was just everything to me.

I could go on and on and on about this one, but I want to go back to reading fics. This is a must read for me. Safe in public, but I read this one largely at work and it was painful. All I wanted to do is pay full attention and I kept having to stop. So if you can read uninterrupted at home, that's the best way to experience this. Also shout out to the Marv Bagman scene, just bravo

In an absolutely astounding turn of events, Levi Ackerman is head over heels in love with one of his best friends.

Perhaps, even more shockingly, he's also currently entrenched in a romantic relationship with them.

And really, truly - he doesn't know how the fuck he got here.

Life has a very funny way of turning his world upside down in the span of only a few months. It's happened to him multiple times - like some cruel and sick turning of fate that never ceases to make him feel bitter by the end. Not too bitter, because everything works out in it's own way.

But bitter in a why the hell do i need to go through this way. It's been an unfair and unjust life, both in big doses and small. Levi doesn't take it to heart because that would make him annoying. Anyone examining his life could say it objectively, Levi has had an excruciatingly hard life.

He always pushes through, because whatever. It is what it is, and he has to keep going. But it's true, certainly, that shits been rough from the get-go, but it always has a funny way of working out. His mothers untimely and sad death and being raised by a deadbeat uncle in a slum gave him motivation to turn his life around by any means.

And now he works as a professor with a cushy job. He nearly didn't have enough money for college because his advisor screwed his schedules and he needed an extra year. Nearly became homeless when trying to land a job after being kicked out of dorms when he was still in school.

A couple of robberies and bad dealings with people from when he was still out on the streets, it's been real. But Levi doesn't resent it because shit usually works out in the end as long as he tries to push through it. He's lucky to be living, despite of everything.

Character development or whatever.

A lot of the reason he was able to stay clear of anything too morbid was because of the people he get to meet in his life. His friends and family and all the people who've been with him for a long time.

Of those people, Levi hasn't even known you the longest.

But three months ago, he came to the conclusion that he was in fact, deeply in love with you.

And for another time in Levi's life, he was completely and utterly screwed. For the first time, he really had no fucking idea how this was going to work out.

You met Levi in college when you were both working at some run-down restaurant to make ends meet. You didn't get along great at first, reason being you were very different. Where Levi was quiet and aloof, you were personable and friendly. Too friendly for his tastes, Levi sort of assumed you were the shallow type.

You lacked the eccentricities that usually made him have some trust and there was something about the way you weaseled out of situations that made his stomach turn. Back when he was on the streets, you were the kind of person he'd always avoid.

Unpredictable.

Hange seems unpredictable, but they're actually calculating. Levi learned that quickly. You were actually unpredictable - as in Levi had no idea how to read you for the longest time. What you were up to, what you wanted.

It all culminated at a holiday work event, where Levi was properly shitfaced and catching some cold air. You were also drunk and you apparently decided to cut the shit for the night.

And in some corny twist of events, you had a long heart-to-heart where Levi smoked his first cigarette (your cigarettes) and got to see your laugh (your real laugh) for the very first time. From there, you became quick friends despite Levi's obvious grudge towards you.

You've been friends for nearly ten years now. You spend a lot of time with each other, especially lately since you've landed a job on his campus doing I.T.

In the ten years you've known each other, you've both been in several relationships. Semi serious ones at that, with your longest one being nearly 5 years. His longest only amounting to two, with a lot of interludes in between.

Levi has a complicated relationship with love. He always assumed maybe he was just especially picky, or maybe romance wasn't something he would be fulfilled by. He had a very close knit group of friends and he didn't often find himself longing for that kind of companionship. His relationships always ended amicably, over Levi's disinterest nearly always.

Your committed relationship had a rocky break-up but you were always a naturally affectionate person in the rest. Levi got to witness it real time, when you'd bring over whoever you were seeing. Doting and gentle, nose nudging someones neck with some liquor in you. Seeing that always made him yearn. He figured he just needed to meet someone he clicked with better, though he'd never uttered the words outloud.

But three months ago, you got this new job and now your proximity is really close. Instead of just in-the-same-city close. You saw him nearly everyday and often fixed the projector in his classroom with a goofy smile - calling him an old man in the process.

He usuaully eats lunch with you and you talk about a lot of nothing together. Sometimes you talk about relationships.

And one time, you tell Levi about the sort of dates you take people on. After he accuses you of being a shitty lover, in jest of course.

( "Thinking about you courting someone gives me chills." He says, over a cup of plain coffee. You pause.

"Hey, what's that supposed to mean? You can say a lot about me, but I'm a good lover, Ackerman."

He snorts. He knows you probably are but shakes his head anyway.

"Yeah? And hows that?"

You scoff, smile playing at your lips anyways. You look a little far-away for a minute before looking him in the eyes, head cocked.

"Mm. Some chivalry does the trick, usually." )

It was an awful epiphany with even worse timing. He was forcing the reaction down until he was on his way home. In his car, he slumped over the wheel and cursed as loud as he possibly could because that one moment was all it took.

Levi Ackerman was in love with one of his absolutely moronic best friends.

He's never been so upset. But it clicked all of a sudden, he had this realization. His longing for relationships was never about love but about you. His disinterest made sense when he pictured crossing those lines with you. Holding your hands and taking you on dates.

He was blushing. Just picturing it was making his face flush with embarrassment and Levi knew he was screwed.

You've got to understand. Levi was in love with his best friend who's friendship he valued a lot. And he's not one to overthink, but with no way of affirming or knowing your feelings - he was adamant to bury this emotion as far as possible. To lock it away forever and dismiss it as some crush.

But once the ball was rolling, Levi couldn't. He couldn't be normal around you. He was avoiding you and obviously you noticed and he even went as far as telling Hange and Erwin while wasted. And apparently they already knew, and thought he knew.

Everything was a mess for those two months of limbo. Levi knew he was going to have to address it eventually because by simply avoiding it he was already fucking up your friendship. So, like the no bullshit person he is - he gave you a time and place and decided he was going to confess.

He thought a bar would be good. To drink and eat snacks, and be casual. But the intimacy of the whole thing was making him a little sick, and it took him three beers to even bring it up. Five to muster up the courage and say it.

("I'm...in love with you." He says, words slurred. Heart pounding, fists curled and fully prepared for rejection.

It's silent. When he opens his eyes to look, you're taking sip of beer with a little surprise in your face.

"Oh. Me too.")

In a shocking twist of events, you were also in love with Levi. In fact, you knew that when your 5 year relationship ended. That's why it even ended. But you figured Levi would never be interested in a similar desperation to protect the friendship - you dated around and hoped it would die down eventually.

After that went down, Levi went to your apartment and you talked it out for a bit. Where to go from here, what to do. Levi told you that he wanted to take it slow, calling you a heathen knowing the details of your hook-ups. You really didn't protest. Just shrugged and said he could control the pace.

And for the last month, he'd been doing just that. Nothing much has changed in that time period.

In fact, nearly nothing has changed other than sometimes - Levi will hug you for a bit longer and holds your hand in private.

That's the thing, the issue, the debacle.

It's all fun. It's great, it's nice. And Levi really is wanting to take it slow or at least he thought he wanted to take it slow.

But it's been a month and you've never even kissed. He can't tell if you're just being sadistic or what, but you are keeping your promise of only letting him control the pace and it's really starting to get on his nerves.

You're coming to pick your boyfriend up for a movie date in five minutes.

Right now, he's waiting outside of the bar with Hanji - who's laughing their ass off about Levi's furious blush and apparent predicament.

"Dunno, Levi. You made your bed, so lie in it, yknow?"

"Fuck you," Levi buries his face into his scarf "I don't even know why I told you."

"Because I'm your good friend with sage advice,"

"Oh, yeah? What kind of sage advice are you offering, exactly? I'm dying to know." He deadpans. Hanji laughs more before their expression goes soft.

"Make the first move. Not saying your cat adjacent charm isn't working but," Hanji clicks their tongue between their teeth "Knowing Y/N, they're definitely not gonna make a move first if you drew the line."

"But why? I don't get it. They're being so obvious about wanting it too."

"Definitely to mess with you," Hange says, not missing a beat. Levi widens his eyes "Oh, come on. Don't look at me like that. They're your partner now but you know what they're like."

"What they're like?"

Hanji chuckles.

"A tease. A flirt. A prankster. Whatever you wanna call it. They're obviously messing with you and they're obviously planning on committing to the bit no matter the cost."

"You're joking."

"Do I sound like I'm joking?" Hanji sighs, looking at Levi (who's mouth is currently agape from disbelief) "Do you remember that one time, when he had that party at Erwin's house? During Christmas."

Levi nods.

"And do you remember how we got stuck in bathroom in the guest bedroom? And we could hear them hooking up? We were pretty shitfaced but—"

For the first time it clicks. In the midst of dating, of falling in love, of nonsense - Levi had forgotten. For one moment, he truly forgotten one crucial thing about you.

That you're a jackass and a lover of malicious, indiscriminate compliance. If he were being nice about it, a tease.

You're—you're fucking—you're messing with him.

And Levi is so annoyed for a minute he thinks he's gonna break up with you right the. It must show on his face because Hanji laughs harder than ever before and Levi is red in the face because how annoying is that. You're not going to kiss Levi until he's left with not a shred of dignity.

Because you're an asshole, and that little smile you do is definitely sadisitic. Fuck.

With cosmic irony, your car pulls up the minute he's come to this same conclusion. He's hardly there when he opens the door, and slides in your seat. The sound of Hanji's laugh haunts him as he shut the door, and he doesn't process the first 10 words you say.

"Well, anyway, you ready to watch the movie?"

Levi grunts.

"Yeah. Ready."

As is the pattern for Levi at this point, no matter how much he tries - once he realizes something, it refuses to detach from his conscious unless he addresses it.

You drive to the movies, buy two tickets, and Levi holds your seats while you go buy popcorn. You watch the trailers before-hand in silence, and you have the decency to hold his hand while that happens.

And you watch the film in silence. Levi is somewhat able to pay attention. It's a good movie, a psychological thriller that he's been itching to watch for a while and it meets his expectations. And it's all fine, until the movie inevitably ends.

You leave the theater, make it outside, and decide to go for a little walk and maybe get something to eat.

And Levi, no matter how much he tries, can't let it go.

Before he knows what he's doing, he grabs your wrist and looks around before pulling you into the closest, poorly lit alley.

He can hear you make a little noise of surprise as your back hits the pavement, a little lost. His hands on the wall behind you. It's times like this he's annoyed about the height difference, but he grabs the lapel of your coat to knock his forehead into yours.

His irritation must show in his face because you look concerned. Good.

"Uh. Baby? Gonna explain or—"

"You," He says, menacing. Seething, really "You're doing this on purpose."

You smile.

You grin. You fucking—

"What are you talking about?" You say, feigning innocence and Levi really considers knocking you out for a minute.

"Don't you play me dumb with me, you little shit. You're doing it on purpose." He repeats. You look so smug. If it wasn't so annoyingly sexy, he would be even angrier.

"Doing what on purpose, though?"

Oh, you. You're gonna make him say it. The nerve.

"You're avoiding it. Initiating. It's been an entire month, we're grown adults and we haven't even kissed. I thought you were just dense, but no - you're doing it on purpose."

You hold back a laugh, using your tongue to run over your lip.

"You think so?"

He hits your chest.

"I know so. We started dating and I forgot you were a complete jackass."

"Kinda on you," You say, smiling at him. He hates you for looking so pleased "Are you saying you wanna kiss me, Levi?"

"Use your brain for a minute."

"No, no. I'm saying," Levi almost chokes when he feels your hand around the base of his neck. How you're stood up, knees bent - inches from his face. His hearts pounding. It's not like he's never kissed anyone before, so why is he so nervous "Do you want me to kiss you, Levi?"

"You're annoying"

"I'm respecting your boundaries." You counter. He frowns.

"Just do it already."

"Sorry, sorry."

Like he said, he's kissed people before. Plenty actually. He used to get drunk in college and makeout with strangers and he's not exactly unfamiliar with it. It's not different, or it shouldn't be different. It shouldn't feel different.

Maybe it's the months long wait, or maybe it's the mountain of feelings he's had to reconcile with in the last few weeks alone. But he doesn't think he's ever been so conscious of a kiss in his entire life. He's probably never been so conscious of any one person in the history of ever.

He knows. It's just a kiss. Hardly anything to scoff at. But he's just so affected, for a minute - it feels like he's forgotten how to do anything but melt. He feels like he's gonna turn into a puddle of water, and his hands are around your shoulders. You are frustratingly good at kissing. You're slow and easy, and your press your lips against him and coax it a little deeper.

And your hands travel down his waist and he doesn't stop you from touching him. He feels blood go somewhere it shouldn't and he pulls away before it can get too bad. He refuses to let your first sexual endeavor be in some shitty alley - but by the time he's pulled back, he's longing to kiss you again.

You give him a smile, ditzy and annoying and so charming.

"Already over it?"

"Shut up. I'm not having sex in alley for our first time."

"Another time, then?" You tease, tilting your head to one side "We can makeout a little though, right?"

"You're terrible. A menace to society. I hope you get arrested."

"I'm sorry," You say, dragging the syllables out "It was kinda cute seeing you get frustrated though. Over little old me, at that? Once in a lifetime opportunity."

"Count your days and watch your back."

"Yeah, yeah. Sorry. Lemme make it up to you?"

He huffs, and pushes himself up to kiss you easier. God it feels good to kiss you. Like being given some ounce of relief after being starved of it for months. He wants to touch you. He wants to do a lot more than that, but for now - he lets himself hug your body as you kiss. You hold him tight, arms around his waist - creeping under the waistband of his pants but not going further.

The pressure of your body, and the warmth, and your hands. God, your hands feel so good. Your lips are soft and you taste like theater popcorn and soda. Levi has never felt so fucking desperate for a kiss in his life and he hates it a little. But he imagines when people talk about passion, this must be what they mean.

You pull away, just for a minute and Levi nearly chases you before getting a grip on reality. You giggle against his mouth.

"I like kissing you."

"If you ever pull some shit like this again, you won’t hear the end of it."

"I'll take that as reciprication."

He kisses you this time, face in your neck with a sigh.

"Read the room."

"Right, right. My bad, baby."

holy. fuckin'. DAMN. I was pretty good at predicting the plot so far, but this episode proved that stampede is going in a whole new direction for real. spoilers for ep 9!!! (and manga a bit)

first of all, we still haven't got a full story of the great fall, but I think it's something they'll reveal in this season, probably during confrontation with knives. and still no scar reveal!! I'm angy but it's something that could be relevant to the standoff with knives, hope we'll get it

the piano scene... oh we're eating GOOD, it's just so wholesome but goes to confirm my theory that twins weren't completely fine on the ship. vash feeling useless because he can't do cool plant shit, knives envying vash for being good at human shit.... oh it's great

so glad knives is getting proper characterization and not just "he evil because he evil"! the fear, the hurt, the genuine care for vash, but then frustration with him – it's right there and I'm eating it up so yummy

the way they recontextualized vash's arm loss is GORGEOUS! I've seen ppl reading this scene differently, but to me it was an act of care from naï. he looks really scared for a reason: we see that the gate consumed all matter, including the hand. vash couldn't control it, so it would only grow bigger and destroy him. NAÏ REALIZED THIS AND SAVED VASH THE ONLY WAY HE COULD

he didn't want to fight him, this was not an act of anger, like in previous versions. all he cared about in that moment was saving his twin..... and what did he get in return? a gun pointed to his face. a gun he gave vash to kill human scum. oh, the DRAMA

ahem, now to the less intense stuff

homeboy has so much trauma, like, damn... how is he gonna fit any more from his impending epic brother fight...... I'm quite curious on how they're gonna characterize him in the next season. concidering that we're taking off earlier than previous versions, he might end up with the same unhinged vibe 98' vash had, as a coping mechanism (if depression didn't work, try dissociation and silliness). but then it would be even more interesting to see meryl's and wolfwood's reactions: they knew him before the accident and saw the big sad

vash has sense in the prosthetic arm, so it must've hurt when he damaged it... probably it hurts less than the real one, and it's clearly painless to take off. but the hand seems to be rather sensitive and fic writers are gonna go crazy for this

age reveal! also brad and luida being in cryosleep makes sense, I was racking my brain on how they're still alive. seems like they're using much more plant power tho... both for cryo and the vegetation, while in manga they tried to keep it as low as possible and send signals to earth

saw someone say that they're probably not doing that here because the earth is destroyed... could be that they decided to go the hard way. but in the manga the earth was still fucked, and it wasn't clear if they communicated with the ppl left on the planet or the fleet that was in some new place. what I'm saying is, there is a possibility that they are looking for help in stampede, we just don't know it yet

meryl was so cute! go off, comedy relief goofy girl, while you can, there is more trauma coming your way :3 yeah, enjoy roberto calling you by your first name... oh it would be such a shame if he gave you his derringer before his untimely death..........

pretty weird that nobody knows why they fell on no man's land, but ppl probably were too ashamed of their past and 150 years later the new generation is oblivious. also so funny that luida has to explain what vegies are..... they have so many plants but haven't see any plants

tbh I wasn't expecting the zazie twist at all, but I'm excited! they are SO gender in stampede, might be the best redesign in the series, love me a genderless bug creature with bold fashion choices. really cool to see that storyline adapted, it was barely touched upon in the last volumes of trimax

btw the multiple bullets story about a plant, worm and human who went around figuring out if their species could coexist and just.... creating this foud family and then building a town there all were equal...... that's my favorite mb story for sure

wolfwood saying "I'm not your friend"... I know what you are. and we got a "you'll have to decide one day"... oh oh the misery, but the context was lacking. it just doesn't hit the same when he isn't daring vash to shoot him in the most homoerotic way possible. on and he looks so goofy trying to ride with his cross

in the last ep's rant I assumed that luida lied about rem saving everybody for some reason?? but no, she actually saved them, I just got a bit confused

so, as I predicted, the gang separated (tho not because of vash) and by the end of the next episode vash'll be in july and meet naï. the poster, man.... that gorgeous futuristic city is getting obliterated for sure

btw vash's gate being opposite to knives and sort of a black hole is nothing new. but there are new layers to this, like vash willingly giving away energy, but destroying things against his will, and knives with the opposite of this. ying yan twins go brrrr

i go through phases with fanfiction, wavering between never reading any and then reading it consistently over a period of time. so my ao3 account only has bookmarks from the last year or so, so i’ll just include those! i did read some reeeally good fics for pairings that i was really into in the past, but i won’t include them here

as for my username, i used to have the apologist format with another character for my finsta, and i because obsessed over mu qing in my recent read through of tgcf. so i’ll defend him from the haters heh.

ok fics. no particular order.

1. Resurrection by heyholmesletsgo

one thing about me is that im going to eat up every songxiao fix-it fic i come across. this one i think follows the logic of the untamed rather than just mdzs, but i don’t think it’s a big change either way. this fic is so beautiful i thought about it for weeks afterward. it’s pretty short, but the slow, gentle pining as xiao xingchen returns to the world, the way they figure out communication, it’s all so good.

2. some new beginning by liesmyth

i got into good omens after season 2 being released this past summer, and i have to say the fics have been very hit or miss for me. the characterizations in fics are always some strange combination of characterizations of season 2 crowley and season 1 crowley and book crowley. this is post-season 1 though so this isn’t really an issue. i loved this one. i think my favorite form of aziracrow is when they’re both just idiots following the momentum of their feelings without really realizing the significance of their actions until, well, they live together hahah. highly recommend this one for that dynamic! it’s also pretty short.

3. Protagonist Rehabilitation Programme by cinnamonsnaps

this one i actually read entirely on my flight from japan last week after randomly stumbling across it. it’s an SVSSS AU where the original luo binghe transmigrates(?) into shen yuan’s world. im not usually a fan of AU fiction because i think much of the time, the events of the source material are very much what shape the personalities of the characters, but this one works for me. it’s so good at matching the tone and writing style of mxtx while being funny in its own way too.

4. hometown comforts by nyoomerr

this is another bingqiu one, post-canon, and it’s an identity reveal. it’s my ideal identity reveal fic because it’s incredibly low stakes and binghe is just curious about shen yuan’s world. no system warnings and stuff. just bonding. im a simple gal.

went through a beefleaf phase where i read a bunch of fics. this was the best one by far. unmatched. beefleaf, imo, is a very difficult couple to write for. there’s so much to unpack. it’s hard to make their relationship feel genuine because so much care needs to go into shi qingxuan trusting he xuan again. in this fic, it is the classic he xuan lingering around, but also we see sqx building his own life back up on his own, as well. it’s he xuan pov. so good so good.

6. Bring it back, bring it back [don’t take it away from me] by wednesdaisy

another good omens fic, also post-season 1, aziraphale pov. in this one, crowley fucks off to new zealand because he thinks his relationship with aziraphale is fantasy and it’s too painful to keep seeing him after everything they’ve been through. and aziraphale tracks him down and has to convince crowley that he does indeed want him in his life and loves him and ah, it’s really sweet.

7. the round moon by orphan_account and the hazy sun by orphan_account

this is a 2 part quanyin fic (pre-canon qyz for part 1, post-canon yin yu pov for part 2). i’m also incredibly picky about quanyin fics. this one was so beautifully done. it didn’t make quan yizhen feel overly-childish as an adult like many others do, and it made yin yu’s conflicting feelings about him so vivid and believable. highly recommend for quanyin nation out there.

8. This Is Me Trying by Piper_Emerald

another post-canon identity reveal. this one is a little more angsty than the one above but also so well done! a deep part of me needs an identity reveal to happen for them at some point hahaha…like binghe is smart ok…he suspects already.

9. some good mistakes by Lise

everyone forgive me for not really having any wangxian recs. my post-untamed fic phase was on my old ao3 account i can’t find. anyway, i remember this one being really good. wei wuxian goes missing. jiang cheng pov, teaming up with lan zhan to find wwx. post-canon untamed. personal preference but i love post-canon untamed wangxian fics the most because i just reading about all the ways they might get together.

i’m including this one because i’d be lying if it wasn’t always in my top 10. i never think about stevebucky these days and cannot stand marvel, but damn this fic holds up like 8 years later!! 3-parter, AU where steve never gets frozen but bucky is still the winter soldier. told over decades. some cringe US cold war propaganda but ignoring that…a beautiful story. if you ever carried any attachment for these two, worth the read.

as for fic recs, i do indeed have a few...

idk if my taste in fics is similar to yours, but i generally like more introspective works with really good writing. the bsd fandom has a surprisingly (or unsurprisingly, given that the animanga is inspired by literary masters) incredible selection of works, unmatched by any other fanbase i've investigated.

my go-to rec is Three-fold Fate by devilrin (multi-chap, 60k, complete). the writing in this one KILLED ME. you know it's gotta be good when the author literally cites Ocean Vuong as inspiration lmfao. it explores the intricacies of canon-verse and dabbles into other aspects of bsd that aren't even explored (yet) in canon. brilliant writing and good skk shit, also with an interesting premise that really hit hard — i always go back to read parts of it when i want to spiral in my thoughts

the art of growing attached by hydref (one-shot, 6k, complete) is also really nice. soft & intimate, also in character in a very funny way

the choir's gonna sing by intimatopia (one-shot, 8k, complete) was really interesting, and i think abt it a lot. it explores dazai's ability in a super cool way that i haven't thought abt before, and now it's one of my fav interpretations. it also adds a depth to the skk relationship that i kinda adore. the writing is also brilliant, and the other works in the series hold a similarly high standard

StarshipDancer's skk series is also a goldmine of skk fics lol. the writing is solid and often very entertaining, i also love how they're both characterized

all the holes we had to breathe by airiena (one-shot, 18k, complete) is gorjus. it explores the dev of their relationship, and has some wonderfully handled motifs that made me writhe lol. very cathartic.

Always/Never by KhaoticEnby (multi-chap, 27k, complete) is one of my favs to return to. it's the peak of reconciliatory intimacy, and i enjoy how it gently explores skk's relationship. also very very cathartic and healing hehe

those are just 6 that immediately come to mind from my mountain of bookmarks aha. hope you enjoy at least some of em ;0 someday i do want to write for skk as well, they're just so captivating and wonderful... <3
