“I don’t understand why you’re so adamant on asking me this, Hal. I just mentioned to Barry that I talked with the head Easter Bunny once and now everyone keeps asking me if I think the Easter Bunny is real! Why do people keep asking me? I’ve met them. I don’t understand why I have to ‘believe’ in the Easter Bunny for them to be real! They exist!”
Hal put his hands up and stepped back, clearly not expecting the frustrated and somewhat hostile response of Billy who slumped back into his seat, which was slightly less satisfying in his bulkier body, and began running his hands through his hair.
The repetition of being interrogated over a simple comment was not only bewildering but had gotten increasingly more annoying to answer as somehow the members of The Justice League, the literal most powerful group of people on earth, didn’t seem to understand a piece of basic knowledge.
Billy was not only very tired of being asked the same thing but even more-so he wanted the laughing at his ordinary response to stop.
He paused and looked Hal dead in the eyes then began to speak in the most dead tone Hal had ever heard from the usually cheerful man.
“Hal, I know the Easter Bunnies are real because I had to spend two, very long weeks personally overseeing the creation of their union that made sure they no longer routinely experience unsafe working conditions and helped establish 8 hour working days so they no longer get overworked or are required to do 80 hour weeks prepping for Easter and get punished for doing less or don’t get paid”,
Billy’s previously slow, blank tone grew more rushed and frustrated as he went on,
“I mean, I didn’t even do much other than sit there and look intimidating by throwing around lightning sometimes and make sure the Easter chicks didn’t do any funny business or tamper with the legal process!
It was in all the papers in Fawcett! I had my picture taken with them and everything. But Hal. I can guarantee you that the Easter Bunny exists. Please. Please stop fucking asking me.” Finally done, Billy slumped onto the table with a loud clunk.
Hal stood there shocked for a moment. “Marvel, did you just imply there’s multiple easter bunnies and they established a form of government?!”
Billy, with seemingly tremendous emotional effort, lifted his head from the table by a few inches and looked Hal in the eyes with a pleading tone, “If I just say no, will you please stop asking me?”
“Absolutely not, now I have even more questions”
Billy let his head fall back onto the table with an even louder clunk and groaned.

Significance of Representation
Let me ask you this; if you identify as cis, heterosexual or Caucasian, have you had to worry about if your alone in the world because of the fact that you’ve never seen yourself represented in real life, or in the media? Realistically your answer should be no. If your answer was yes, well I got news for you, you better start digging deep into yourself because your gunna have some issues to figure out! That or you’re totally oblivious to the world around you! Wake up people!
In my opinion, there’s a huge misconception to representation, and understanding its importance. And the scary part is, is that the significance of it affects everyone. Yes, even those of you in majorities of cis, straight or white populations, it’s still important. From my perspective, representation has 3 elements of importance that play into it: community, acceptance, and most importantly education. Those 3 things are what is going to be explored in the next couple of paragraphs.
When representation is executed properly in mainstream media, it will give that feeling of community and acceptance to the individual that may be asking themselves “Am I different from everyone else..?” But is too afraid to explore that question out loud because god forbid you come off to other people as being “weird” or “different.” True representation makes you realize that it’s okay to feel like you can be different if that’s how you want feel!
The first time I truly felt represented in media was in a kid’s movie I watched this year, in 2021, at the age of 24. And this story is coming from someone that didn’t know they were gay, had a disability and was a different gender until they were 18 because they never saw any of the representation I needed growing up. Anyway, the movie I had watched was The Mitchell’s Vs. The Machines on Netflix. For those of you who haven’t heard of this movie, it’s a fun movie that shows all the crazy aspects of 2009 meme culture, with beautiful animation stylings from Sony. The story is about a dysfunctional family of 4 that has to save the world from a robot apocalypse while trying to salvage the relationships within they’re family. However, the main character of the movie is a AFAB (assigned female at birth) queer, and a neurodivergent person. As someone who also identifies with being; AFAB, queer and neurodivergent, let’s just say I got 5 minutes into the movie before my 7-year-old inner child cried because of the fact that I’ve never been able to relate to something so hard in my life!
I’m sure for someone reading this that identities with the top majorities of sexuality, gender and race, it’s hard for you to understand the significance of those emotions that I experienced in that moment. But let’s try putting this into perspective! I can’t tell you how good it feels to finally feel like you're seen when the world around you is constantly saying, “You don’t deserve to live the same as everyone else because you're different.” I hear statements like this everywhere in the news, and media. I pretend those types of statements don’t hurt because I tend to come off as confident and sure of myself because I’m not afraid to live authentically and outside of the typical “normal” standards. But those types of statements still linger in the back of my mind that’s for sure. Those feelings I experienced are why we need more representation because of the previous questions of “hey am I aloud to be different?” And those questions should be valid, and normalized because really everyone should explore them! Because who wants to be the same as everyone else? Am I right? But overall, the importance in representation for the aspects of feeling like you’ve finally found a sense of community and being accepted, everyone should have that experience, even if you are considered different. It's only human to want to be accepted, heard and seen. Don’t we all just want to feel like that?
Lastly, the other important component to representation in my view, is the education part. This is the section that I think has an effect on all populations, marginalized or not. Obviously, education means, the act of learning. Being taught through the lens of representation is significant in the importance of celebrating others in moments of adiversity. This is particularly true when we’re currently living through a time period that is full of fiction over fact, and just pure hatred and divide. For example, Newfoundland and Labrador is a place that could benefit from more education through the simple route of representation and its role. Its no secret there’s lots of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians out there that are visibly homophobic, or racist. (and if you just got butterflies in your stomach reading that sentence, then yes I’m especially talking to you) Really, has anyone ever dug into the question of “How can some Newfoundlanders and Labradorians be so homophobic or racist, even though Newfoundland and Labrador has such a welcoming culture?” From my perspective, it seems to be a partial lack of representation. Especially in more rural towns of NL, outside of the St John’s metro area. As a general human being, how are you supposed to accept something that is different when you’ve either been taught to be prejudice towards that particular difference, or have no knowledge or education on the manner? Most people are afraid of the ocean for the same reasons, fear of the unknown. Hence why I think education and learning is an important attribute to why more people need to take the time to understand the importance of representation and why it’s needed now more than ever.
To summarize, I gave you guys my 3 reason on why I think representation is so important and needed. The first and second reason were, a sense of community and acceptance for the people that do feel like they are different and need to know that it’s okay to feel like that. And the third, the importance of learning behind those ideals of representation for those of you who probably don’t think it matters. A lot of Us need to realize that, us as human need that kind of exposure so we may choose to live loving and compassionate lives, and not just towards people we like and respect, but towards the people that are different from who you are! To show respect, even in moments you might find it hard to! To end off, if you thought this entry from me was controversial, well it was supposed to be. Controversy and conflict aren’t something that is bad, or to be afraid of. Those 2 circumstances are a place you can grow and learn from. And I hope this overall written piece has helped you as the reader start to move in the direction of growing and learning because I was able to put a topic that needs more compassion, into a simpler perspective.

Pieces of the Stars blooper reel
As I toil over the last 3 chapters (!!!) of PotS, I can’t help but think about what the drafts have been through over the past few years--specifically, some of the stuff that didn’t make the final edit, and why.
I thought about making this a grand retrospective once I posted the last chapter, but I don’t think the last bits will go through the same kind of shredding-and-reassembling process that the earlier parts did. And I also need to get some stuff out of my head tonight, so hopefully some of you will find this interesting. (PS this list is non-exhaustive.) Thing 1: My original concept for PotS included a prologue and epilogue. I got a few hundred words into the prologue before realizing that having it there was undermining everything I wanted to achieve with PotS, so I abandoned it and started with chapter 1.
The prologue started just after Arwen’s wedding, opening with Elrond having a meal alone in Pelargir and mulling over his sorrow and acceptance of her choice to become mortal when he happens to meet Maglor (still alive and currently a seafaring merchant) for the first time since his youth. Their conversation becomes a framing device for the rest of the story, which from the beginning is implied to be an adult’s understanding of the things he witnessed as a child and came to reconcile as he grew older. The epilogue picks up with them again after the end of the main story, and Elrond invites Maglor back to meet his family for the first and last time, showing that he still loves him even after coming to terms with what Maglor did in the past.
The main reason I got rid of this is that it took away almost all of the ambiguity I was going for regarding Elrond’s powers, Maglor’s eventual fate, the nature of mortality and immortality, and some other stuff. It wrapped it up in too neat a package. At the end of PotS I wanted to leave the reader still grappling with the questions that Elrond himself has as he comes of age—what exactly makes an elf or Man? How does he reconcile his love for Maglor and Maedhros with the knowledge of what they did to his family? What is the origin and extent of his psychic abilities? Will he ever see Maglor again? How about Elros? How about his parents? Why is he so uncomfortable with uncertainty? It’s messy, and giving absolute answers to any of it made that struggle feel cheap.
Thing 2: A “Maglor and/or Maedhros awkwardly explain the birds and the bees to the kids” scene seems semi-mandatory for E&E-come-of-age stories, so I started writing one, but abandoned it pretty early on.
For one, the humor in these types of scenes is almost always meant to come from the awkwardness, and I hate it when I get secondhand embarrassment from stories, so why would I inflict it on other people? Also, Elrond and Elros are farm kids. They know where babies come from. They might have some easily-debunked misconceptions (the early scene where they’re watching the hens with the chicks was funny because they think babies come from eggs and their mom is a bird, please laugh), but the general mechanics of reproduction are not a mystery to them.
The other reason why this scene wouldn’t work here is because I don’t write elvish society as prudish or awkward about sex, so making everyone act weird about it for laughs would be inconsistent with that. I'm much happier with having a couple of different scenes (like the pancake scene or the one where Osgardir explains the differences between elves and mortals) where the kids learn about courtship, gender diversity, and so forth as necessary for their character development instead of forcing an obligatory “birds and the bees” scene.
Thing 3: I planned to have Maedhros seriously attempt suicide at some point during Elrond’s apprenticeship, and Elrond uses his gift to save his life. I tested several different approaches to this and wasn’t satisfied with any of them, so eventually I scrapped that whole arc and several thousand words of prose. There was also an earlier bit when Elrond is experiencing visions and can’t control them yet, and he ends up seeing/experiencing a bunch of Maedhros’ past attempts, culminating in a terrifying vision where the floor was literally lava.
The biggest reason I cut this was that it was a plot tumor that contributed nothing to anyone’s characterization or relationships that I wasn’t able to distribute among other, more important scenes. Additionally, I was increasingly uncomfortable with assigning Elrond the role of Maedhros’ trauma-sponge in that situation. I know it’s really popular in these stories for Elrond to provide some psychological support to the Fëanorians, but IMO if it’s done poorly it’s just super dysfunctional and it’s awkward to see people act like it’s cute.
I’m much happier with the final edit and the implication that Maedhros is voluntarily working to keep it together for the boys’ sake. I also didn’t have to sacrifice the part where Elrond uses his gift to help Maedhros: I just drew on some stuff from my old fic “Reflection” and had Elrond experimenting with his gift to help Maedhros with chronic pain.
Thing 4: A whole character, Dúnith the herbalist, got fired. She was a green-elf and I liked having her around to explore cultural differences with the Noldor, but in the end, I spent too much time trying to explain why she was there and mentioning her in the background and I realized her entire existence was unnecessary. (I killed off Rythredion for the same reason--he served his purpose and I ran out of things for him to do, and keeping track of where he was got annoying.)
I was sad to lose a whole scene where she, Elrond, and Osgardir go foraging for herbs and Elrond gets poison ivy all over his whole body, but it moved nothing forward and was competing for space with more important scenes. She was also Osgardir’s friend-with-benefits, which was fun, but also unnecessary. All of Dúnith the herbalist’s necessary functions were very easily redistributed to other scenes and characters. The dwarf caravan, for example, brought news from the outside world and gave us an opportunity to look at cultural differences. The actual green-elf lore that Dúnith brought to the story went to Amrúnith, a pre-existing character with her own life, i.e. someone I didn’t have to micromanage.
Couple things I learned from all this:
you don’t have to include a scene or dynamic just because other E&E fics do
if you have to fight to explain why a character is there or why something is happening, seriously reconsider whether that thing belongs in the story

Week 7
Tumblr media
This week in class we looked into the TBD catalog. The TBD Catalog is a design fiction that rises dialogue about near future scenarios. It has a collection of diegetic prototype concepts to prompt thinking around how these future scenarios might be approached. The example from the catalog that I found most interesting was the ‘Electrix’ social alarm clock. The purpose of the alarm clock is to like posts that have been posted overnight by your friends when you hit the off button to save the effort of scrolling through and doing it yourself. I found this concept creative and humorous. For me, though, it raised the concern that if the use of this device were common practice, it would remove the personal connection that people find in social media. People would know that a lot of likes on their post wouldn’t necessarily equate to people enjoying their post, but rather a mere social obligation being fulfilled by a robot, without the post even being seen. I personally don’t engage in social media very often, but when I do it is as a creative outlet, such as sharing photography or design work, but I do it for myself, not for the sake of getting likes. I think that if this product were to be a reality, it would damage people’s approach to social media, giving the misconception that they have to fulfill a social obligation, rather than using social media to explore and share their identity.
Tumblr media
"The Thing from the Future" was a game introduced in this week's class, and it prompted us to picture a postcard from 30 years in the future with a message of continuing progress on it. The theme of the postcard was education, and the tone was supposed to excite the reader. While mulling over the task, my group questioned “ What interesting educational opportunities might exist for us in the future?” Afterwards we explored subjects and incentives around this question. Then we ideated on what formats might be exciting for the postcard.
Subjects:
Environmental Protection - This is particularly important in light of climate change and the consequences it will have in the next 30 years.
Life Skills - So that kids are less worried about things like taxes and other such things when they enter the real world.
Offers:
Free University Tuition - It will be easier to meet the growing demand for educated people if university is free in the future.
Exciting Formats:
VR (Virtual Reality) or AR (Augmented Reality) - Students might get a taste of the future of education with a postcard that incorporates virtual reality.
The process of this task was fun for me because it brought about the chance to work with classmates that I hadn’t worked with before. I appreciated hearing different perspectives because of this. This task helped to equip me with skills that aren’t only helpful for class, but for my own practice as a designer, because it gave me practice in thinking innovatively. The task forced us to think up ideas that wouldn’t normally come about.
Tumblr media
After the “the thing from the future” task, we took part in a design fiction matrix. In light of the current global crisis, this was a thought-provoking exercise. It was a lot easier than I anticipated to do this exercise, I assume because I'm seeing constant updates in the media, such as the news and social media. This exercise was enjoyable because like the previous task, it positioned us to collaborate and bring in multiple perspectives, which served as a springboard for my own ideation to flourish.

I'VE BEEN PONDERING PG
It's very common for startups to present to them. Do people live downtown, or have some sort of exit. There is less stress in total, but more as an exploration of gender and sexuality in an urban context, etc.1 I think the goal of this rule; if you can't explain your plans concisely, you don't worry that it might come out badly, or upset delicate social balances, or that can incorporate live data feeds, or that you won't be demoralized if they seem pointless.2 One YC founder told me that it wasn't worth investing in. The patent pledge doesn't fix every problem with patents.3 I can tell from the case. This site isn't lame. They wouldn't all grow as big. It will be easier in proportion to an estimate of your company's value that you'd both agreed upon.
Then you could, I don't care what he says, I'm going to name them: type A fundraising is when you can do, you don't see the opportunities all around us is that we get on average only about 5-7% of a much larger number.4 In most fields the great work is: very exacting taste, plus the ability to direct the course of adding some feature they were asking for.5 Most hackers are employees, and this trick merely forces you to clean up your apartment, writing something that you'll be able to say whether he should be classified as a friend or angel.6 Don't say anything unless you're fairly sure what you want to reach; from paragraph to paragraph I let the ideas take their course. Sometimes a competitor will deliberately threaten you with a business background, and he will automatically get paid proportionally more. Not all of them had never seen the Web before we came to tell them to stop.7 If you're free of a misconception that everyone else is crazy. Most startups that raise money and the kind of alarms you'd set off if you operate like Columbus and just head in a general westerly direction.
As we were in the old sense of managing the round. Technology is a lever. Modern literature is important, but I suspect that most of them a part time job. In the Bay Area would be the answer. But let someone else start those startups. They're not necessarily trying to mislead you. Like a lot of people will make them.
But if you make something they like. 05 PM subject: Re: Revenge of the Nerds on the LL1 mailing list.8 American universities currently seem to be a media company to throw Microsoft off their scent. Java white paper, Gosling explicitly says Java was designed to be a missile aimed right at what makes America successful.9 Different users have different requirements, but I don't think that's the right way to do it. But this is merely an artifact of the rule of law.10 All you'll learn is the words kids are allowed to use. That's the way to the close.11 It did serve some purposes: reading a talk out loud can expose awkward parts. What investors still don't get is what insanely great translates to in a larval startup.
When I talk about humans being meant or designed to live a certain way out of habit or politeness. Hackers & Painters that hadn't been online. Incidentally, the switch in the 1920s to financing growth with retained earnings till the 1920s.12 And the programmers liked it because they don't like to have it. What counts as property depends on what works to treat as property. But this is wrong. What's a prostitute?13 Everyone by now presumably knows about the danger of premature optimization. Essentially, they lead you on. That will change the way they treat the music they sell through iTunes.14
So tablet makers should be thinking: what else can we give developers access to? White said, good writing is rewriting, wrote E. Almost four decades later, fragmentation is still increasing. The more people you have to do it than literally making a mark on the world. Investors looked at Yahoo's earnings and said to one of the principles they teach you is to align the car not by lining up the hood with the stripes painted on the road, but by trying to use mass lawsuits against randomly chosen people as a form of evolutionary pressure. People think that what you want. In principle anyone there ought to have multiple founders who were already friends before they decided to build recipe sites, or aggregators for local events.
Better Bayesian Filtering. They may play some behind the scenes as adults spin the world for a while, can make visual perception flow in through his eye and out through his hand as automatically as someone tapping his foot to a beat. If you looked in people's heads. They are all fundamentally subversive for this reason. I sat down and calculated what I thought was hard, the groups all turned out ok. Election forecasters are proud when they can get it, at this stage.15 The danger of symmetry, and repetition especially, is where the richest buyers are, but figure out precisely where you lose them. If they didn't know what language our software was so complex. 2:21 AM subject: Re: meet the airbeds PG, Thanks for the lead Fred to: Fred Wilson date: Mon, Feb 9,2009 at 11:42 AM subject: Re: airbnb There's a lot to start a startup. And yet they can hold their own with any work of art ever made.
Leonardo?16 It is, as far as possible prevent them from having fun. Doesn't that show people will pay most for?17 After thinking about it than most, but almost everywhere the trend is in that direction. Till then they had to ask permission to release software: the last thing you changed. But fortunately in the US are more conservative than Boston ones.18 People are all you need is to be battered by circumstances—to let the days rush by. But that's something you can fix later, but you can't evade the fundamental conservation law. And yet Apple's overall market share is still small. Though the Web has been around for a millennium is finished just because of its prestige, but because they were ambivalent about threatening their cash cow, mainframe computing. I mean efforts to protect against cosmic rays.19
Notes
Even as late as 1984. Incidentally, Google may appear to be at a large company? Plus one can have escaped alive, or to be good?
To do this all the poorer countries. Ed. But it was the least correlation between the Daddy Model may be a sufficient condition.
And in World War II to the rise of big companies can afford that. And while this is to try to be a win to include in your classes as a result a lot more frightening in those days, but I call it procrastination when someone gets drunk instead of happy. I'm talking mainly about software startups are now the first digital computer game, you can probably write a subroutine to do would be better at opening it than people who might be a good problem to fit your solution. Look at those goddamn fleas, jabbering about some disease they'll see once in China, during the war on drugs show, bans often do better, and instead of the world of the most famous example.
Plus one can ever say it again. When I catch egregiously linkjacked posts I replace the actual amount of damage to the founders' advantage if it was 94% 33 of 35 companies that can't reasonably expect to make a fortune in the case, not because Delicious users are stupid.
But you're not allowed to discriminate on any basis you want to get going, and oversupply of educated ones come up with elaborate rationalizations. I also skipped San Jose is a meaningful idea for human audiences. Though in fact had its own mind about whether a suit would violate the patent pledge, it's not enough to defend their interests in political and legal disputes.
What Is an Asset Price Bubble? This doesn't mean easy, of the river among the bear gardens and whorehouses. They act as if you'd just thought of them could as accurately be called acting Japanese. Many more than 20 years.
It's hard for us!
2%. If a prestigious VC makes a small proportion of the things you're taught.
Doing things that don't scale.
Now the misunderstood artist is not limited to startups. There's not much use, because few founders are willing to provide when it's done as conspicuously as this place was a false positive rate is 10%, moving to Monaco would only give you more than the previous round. Cascading menus would also be good startup founders tend to get going, e.
Emmett Shear writes: True, Gore won the popular vote he would presumably have got more of the flock, or at least, the government and construction companies. People only tend to damp this effect, at least guesses by pros about where that money comes from ads on other investors doing so because otherwise competitors would take forever in the case of heirs, professors, politicians, and everyone's used to place orders.
His critical invention was a kid that you'd want to sell them technology. I'm not dissing these people make the people working for startups, because it aggregates data from so many trade publications nominally have a lot of reasons American car companies have little to bring corporate bonds to market faster; the point where things start with consumer electronics and to run on the firm's site, they're nice to you. Not only do they decide on the young Henry VIII and was troubled by debts all his life. Distribution of potentially good startups, who've already made the decision.
Maybe that isn't really working bad unit economics, typically and then scale it up because they couldn't afford it. An investor who's seriously interested will already be working to help a society generally is to let yourself feel it mid-sentence, but you get an intro to a clueless audience like that.
But it is dishonest of the country turned its back on industrialization at the start, e.
The need has to be employees, or editions with the buyer's picture on the back of Yahoo, we actively sought out people who'd failed out of the things attributed to Confucius and Socrates resemble their actual opinions. The speed at which point it suddenly stops. And when a startup to engage with slow-moving organizations is to write every component yourself, but also very informative essay about why something isn't the last step in this essay I'm talking here about everyday tagging. If not, greater accessibility.
In 1525 he was made a bet: if you hadn't written it? I saw this I used thresholds of.
Especially if they were to work your way up. I managed to find a broad range of topics, comparable in scope to our scholarship though without the spur of poverty are only locally accurate, because those are probably the last step in this respect.
So how do you use that instead of Windows NT? How did individuals accumulate large fortunes in an absolute sense, if you make something hackers use. On the face of it.
But it's telling that it would be to say that it had no idea what's happening as merely not-doing-work. But they've been trained. So far, I preferred to call them whitelists because it depends on a weekend and sit alone and think.

"She's basic!"
"We're wandering in another world, seeing things no one can ever imagine." - Violet, All the bright places
Tumblr media
Theodore Finch, a teenage boy who’s fascinated by death – one of the main character on one of my favourite book, “All the Bright Places” once said, “But the great thing about this life of ours is that you can be someone different to everybody.” I first read this book when I was still in high school and apparently I’m not satisfied with it because I feel like I didn’t digest everything properly or should I say I didn’t understand it well so, I re-read it when I was in 11th grade and I‘m currently reading it now, again. The book was one of the New York Times Bestseller and it was written by Jennifer Niven. It’s a story about the two funny, fragile, and wildly damaged high school kids. Not that I want to talk about the book in this blog, I’m just sharing little insights about it and I just want to say that Finch was right and Finch was me. I’m not fascinated to death and I’m not wildly damaged, it’s just that at some certain point and certain areas, little areas to be specific, I can relate myself to Finch.
Tumblr media
"I feel a thousand capacities spring up in me. " - Virginia Woolf, The waves.
I experienced being bullied since I was in grade two up until 8th grade. Reasons of me getting bullied include: my flaws, I always have skin asthma marks on some parts of my body, which they thought that I thought less of myself. Some just bullied me with pure judgements, well this is not new, and “The world’s a stage and everyone’s merely players.”
First two years of high school, I was just this wimpy kid who gets most of the attention from the class, it’s either my teacher calls me for an oral recitation and/or read something aloud and/or write something from the board or my classmates makes fun of me and make not good stories about me. If you ever seen some movies where one of the characters get a lot of attention to some sexy and mean girls, well my situation before was similar to that. I should probably say I have this group of mean girls trying to bring me down and I don’t exactly know the reason why they do what they do. I don’t think less of myself, I just labelled myself as ordinary and basic, which I am and I like being one. I used to think before maybe they’re insecure of me that’s why they always try to bring me down but obviously, they didn’t succeed.
I had so many memories in high school, which includes all the misconceptions of people about me. They thought I was this and I was that but I’m neither both. People often misunderstood me with my little actions. Sometimes people got the wrong interpretation of what I’m trying to tell them that’s why I do not speak a lot and I’m careful with my actions because I feel like everyone’s watching me. Just like Finch, I too thought that it’s not good and it’s sad to be different because “people don’t like messy or different,” but as I was growing old I realized that it’s okay and it’s good to be different and unique because it’s where you stand out.
I was so driven to prove them that they were wrong about me. With all those negative things negative people say to me, I remain as positive and as cool as I am, which brought the plot twist of my high school years (last two years). I’m not going to write down all the details, to summarize everything, just like some movies, people finally saw the real me and not the “me” most people describe me and finally I was able to build relationship with some peers I considered my family and that’s when I realized high school is about making memories and good times that will last forever.
Tumblr media
The “me” 5 years ago used to think and day dream a lot. I used to imagine the “what ifs” and dream about the “puhons” which is why sometimes I sat somewhere alone and I stare at something for couple of minutes and I just think and imagine. One of my closest friend told me I’m weird but “weird in a good way” as she say. Maybe because I always sing the “nips” song and the “dumb ways to die” song or I just do weird and childish stuffs. My friends also find me extra sometimes, they call me the “walking refrigerator,” the “pharmacy” and the “book store.” You might be wondering why, it is because I always had a lot of foods in my backpack, I had a complete set of first aid kit, I always bring so much pens and papers with me and my friends used to grab and have them, all the time.
I really don’t have much personal fables because when I’m comfortable with you, I’m like an old noisy babbling radio. Once you turned me on, there’s no turning back. I always speak my mind and heart out, only if I’m comfortable with you. I’m more on creating imaginary audiences on my mind, which makes me anxious, which is also not good. I’m always thinking of what people think of me and I might disappoint them if I’m not what they thought I am, which scares me sometimes.
Theodore Finch doesn’t want to be surrounded with so much people because people call him freak. He was labelled as one because sometimes he just got lost out of control and people doesn’t want that, which makes me relate to him. Sometimes, at random moments, I just lost out of control and people doesn’t want me to be out of control, which makes me feel misunderstood that sometimes they either talk behind my back or make fun of me. So, growing up I just ignore them and I just focused on myself because “People are always gonna talk, it’s their specialty,” (Finch).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
My teen age years were full opportunities, memories, disappointments and failures, and of course successes and chances. It’s one of the best years of my life because I was able to discover myself more and explore and find the unknowns of my life. Also, just like what Finch says, I learned that there is good in this world, if you look hard enough for it. I learned that not everyone is disappointing including me. Lastly, my teen self has made me be:
All the colors in one at full brightness.

for fanfic authors considering a creative writing graduate degree
i’ve had a few people PM me about the grad program i’m in, and i thought maybe i would share some information i’ve learned about creative writing graduate degrees plus all the stuff i wish someone had told me before i started applying.
to give you some context: i own a house (that i purchased, i didn’t inherit) and i support myself completely. i’m not married or in a relationship and i don’t have kids yet. my undergraduate degree is in psychology. i came from a lower-class upbringing. i had never written an original work of fiction before applying; i had only written fanfic. i worked in finance for ten years at a dead-end job before i decided to go back to school. i applied to six schools and got accepted into one.
basic info
usually a creative writing graduate degree is called an MFA, or a Master of Fine Arts. it’s considered a terminal degree, that is to say, it’s the highest degree you can attain in the field of creative writing.
however, some programs are also MAs, and usually those are combined with literature or pedagogy. there are also a number of creative writing PhDs, which are less about the craft of writing and more about teaching and research.
MAs are generally two years, MFAs are anywhere from two to three years, and PhDs are around four. most schools offer the MFA, so going forward that’s the type of degree i’ll be discussing. the MA doesn’t stray far from the MFA, and the PhD is a whole other beast.
you’ll need to choose a focus for your degree. most MFAs offer fiction, creative nonfiction, and poetry. some offer scriptwriting or experimental/hybrid forms. some expect you to play around with multiple genres.
MFA classwork revolves around the creative writing workshop. a workshop is a class where you meet with your peers once a week to discuss the work you’ve read the prior week. you take turns submitting a story, poem, or excerpt, and while you’re the one being workshopped, you take notes while everyone talks. when you workshop your peers, you offer a letter of critique and participate in the discussion. workshop is also the place where you can ask about craft, publishing, or anything else you have questions about. workshops are run by a leader, usually a professor, someone who has a significant publishing history and experience teaching.
other classwork for MFAs include literature seminars, where you read already published work and discuss it with your peers while applying it to established theory.
an MFA thesis is generally a book-length work of your given genre, due at the end of your studies to grant your degree. it may also include some research component, like a craft essay or reading list, and an oral examination. you work with an advising committee throughout your degree to hone and revise your thesis, and generally use workshop to get peer feedback on early drafts.
MFA extracurriculars include working on your school’s literary magazine, doing readings of your work, and participating in your English department’s student organizations. there are usually additional opportunities that pop up throughout each semester, including meeting with established visiting writers (and hopefully these are writers of the super famous variety, which makes for great networking).
applying to an MFA involves a writing sample (the most important piece of the application), undergraduate transcripts, letters of recommendation, and a letter of intent. some also require the GRE. many have a $50-100 fee, but sometimes you can request a waiver.
assumptions debunked
here are some misconceptions i’ve come across and some i had when i began researching.
expectation: i can’t afford it
reality: that’s possible, but consider that many programs are fully funded, that is to say, the school will pay you to go there. no tuition, no loans, just a stipend that you’ll receive in monthly disbursements. it’s not a lot, but usually enough to get by.
the way it works is that in exchange for grad classes, you teach undergraduate english. this is usually a class called english composition, and many schools make it mandatory for all incoming freshman, which is how the english department gets funded, and they can return those funds to you, the grad student.
personally, teaching has become one of my favorite things i’ve ever done. i want to continue teaching when i graduate because it’s just really fun and incredibly rewarding. i highly recommend this route for an MFA because you won’t end up in debt afterward and you’ll gain a marketable skill (pedagogy) if your writing career doesn’t take off immediately.
expectation: i can’t quit my job
reality: there are a growing number of what are called low-residency MFAs. the above fully funded scenario are programs called full-residency, where you have to be on campus a few days a week, but low-res programs are mostly online, with 1-2 weeks per year spent on campus.
the downside to this is that there is usually minimal funding for these programs, which means you’re paying for them out of pocket or with loans. the people who go into low-res programs are usually people firmly established in their lives with some disposable income and a desire to improve their work. this is a great option if you’re currently working full time and can’t move to be near a fully funded program.
expectation: but my undergrad degree isn’t in english or CW
reality: GOOD. that’s what’s so great about writing as an academic discipline -- when we get nothing but formally trained writers, we get too many stories about the formally trained life.
your background, your work history, and your life experiences are all enormously valuable to a writing program. the weirder and more diverse you are, the more intrigued admissions people will be. they want people who can bring new perspectives to workshop, who see the world in different ways than those who have been trapped in academia for ages.
it’s definitely valuable to have an english undergrad degree, but it’s equally valuable to have life experience.
expectation: i’m just a fanfic writer
reality: GOOD. do you know how amazing fanfic is? of course you do, you write it. now imagine the sense of community and purpose and drive you have while writing fanfic, and put that in a physical place, and you basically have grad school. so if you like fanfic for all those things -- community, purpose, drive -- you’re going to love getting an MFA.
from a skill perspective, fanfic authors have something major that non-established ofic writers are missing: an audience. if you write fanfic to post on tumblr or ao3, you’re writing it with a specific audience in mind. you are probably acutely aware of how that audience will react, how to entertain them, and most importantly, HOW TO DEVELOP CHARACTERS.
i really thought i would get into an MFA and turn into some kind of holier-than-thou snob about fanfic, like suddenly my eyes would open and i would gain such an appreciation for, idk, Hemingway or some shit that i would completely forget about my fanfic roots.
N O P E. i’ve found a lot of published authors i like, sure, but i like them because their writing reminds me of my favorite things about fanfic. you will not have to sacrifice your love of fanfiction* to pursue an MFA, and you won’t have to change the things you love writing. people may think what you write is weird, but fuck ‘em. write what you want to write.
*you won’t be able to write actual fanfic in grad school, but there’s nothing stopping you from filing off the serial numbers. if str8 white men can do it over the entire span of civilization, so can you.
expectation: i don’t need an MFA to be a writer
reality: god, so true. if you write fanfic, you probably already have all the skill necessary to begin the publishing game if you want to go that route, and potentially all the feedback you need to keep improving. which begs the question, why would you even want an MFA?
i can only tell you why i applied:
i had reached a ceiling in my writing and wanted to explore and experiment with things i knew would never fly in the land of fanfic
i wanted to belong in a physical community of people who took creative writing as seriously as i did
i wanted ofic reading recommendations and a structured environment in which to work
i wanted to teach!!
i wanted to learn about and discuss literature at a level that is difficult to find outside of academia
i didn’t feel like my education was complete, and while i could have gone back to school for psychology, my qualifications more closely aligned with creative writing programs and honestly, it just sounded way more fun
i wanted access to databases beyond jstor
i had a lot of perspectives and opinions i wanted to learn to voice more articulately and in an artistic or research-based form
i was tired of my job and looking for a different career path
you might have different needs, or maybe some of these resonate with you. people get MFAs for all sorts of reasons. plus, your perceptions might change when you get there; mine definitely did.
expectation: i only write genre fiction, not “literature”
reality: you can write whatever the hell you want for whatever reason you want. you’re going to get feedback regardless, and your peers are going to care about the things you care about, and if they’re worth a damn, they’ll give you crit on their perception of your priorities, not what they think is important to the field of literature.
in the past year, i’ve read workshop submissions ranging from the onion style satire, to children’s literature, to hard sci fi. the point of an MFA is that you’re there to explore the work that interests you. you don’t have to conform for anyone for any reason. you are there to do your work, and the program is there to guide you and offer you support.
expectation: i’m not qualified because don’t have any publications
reality: you don’t need to be published to apply for an MFA. most people aren’t even published by the time they graduate. what you do need is evidence of your commitment to writing and the discipline thereof, that is to say, you write consistently, you’re passionate about writing, and that your writing sample shows both a command of writing as well as promise of improvement.
expectation: i don’t have what it takes to pursue a graduate degree
reality: i promise you do. the reason i’m writing this is because the fanfic community has some of the most humble individuals i’ve ever met, who are compulsively shy about their craft, and who have no concept how good they actually are. i see so much self-defeated mentality, so much impostor syndrome. but please believe me when i say
LITERATURE NEEDS YOU
literature needs the way you see humanity, your compassion, your interest in telling stories without want of profit, your eye for character, your drive, your commitment, your voice.
you are so much better than most of what’s out there. you may not see it now but it’s true.
expectation: i won’t be able to get a job with an MFA
reality: ehhhh kinda true, but if that’s the only thing stopping you, ignore it. a (full-res) MFA trains you for three things: writing, editing, and teaching. all of these are lucrative careers that are no more difficult to establish yourself in than most other fields. the graduate chemist has the same concerns about the job market as the graduate writer. it’s all gatekeeping rhetoric steeped in a terrible economy. you just have to trust you’ll be ok.
expectation: i don’t know what i would write about
reality: you can figure it out when you get there. no one else knows what they’re doing either.
i’m happy to answer more questions if you have them! i hope this helps some of you who are curious about how MFAs work. i’m sharing this because i never thought i would be able to do a graduate degree, and now that i’m here, even though it was a huge risk, it’s the best decision i’ve ever made.

I’ve been going to gaming conventions for almost 15 years. This year I almost skipped out on going to any conventions since moving to Florida back in October of 2015.
Things changed when I received an email letting me know that tickets were available for Dice Tower Con in Orlando. I decided that since I wasn’t going to Origins Game Fair or Buckeye Game Fest this year that I would head a few hours north east to Orlando to check out Dice Tower Con.
I packed a game bag, my Quiver game case, a duffel & head to Orlando. My parents, being mostly retired, came with me for a Disney vacation while I enjoyed myself at the convention.
We arrived at the Caribe Royale hotel the first day of the convention. The Caribe Royale is a beautiful hotel with lots to do if you are just vacationing with a free bus ride to the Disney parks.
This was the view from my floor.
After arriving at the hotel, we unloaded our bags & headed for a quick lunch at the Tropicale restaurant in the main building of the Caribe. At the Tropicale we met a very awesome server named Ian.
After lunch I headed to the convention center where there was absolutely no waiting to get registered. This is good news because I really dislike waiting in registration lines. I picked up my badge, free Dice Tower canvas bag, & free game.
Then I went exploring. There were a handful of rooms setup for companies like AEG, HABA, Gigamic Games, & Indie Game Alliance. Some of these rooms were also used for the kid friendly zone, war gaming, & painting.
I walked through some of the other larger ballrooms where events were to be held. Some of these rooms were used for the flea market on Saturday morning, the Mega Games, meet & greets for the special guests, & the Dice Tower Game Show held by Tom Vasel.
And then I hit the opening gaming room. When I got there, only about half of the tables were full this early in the con. There was a line for the Cool Stuff Inc. dent & ding booth, & the vendors area was just starting to open.
I walked around watching folks play games just to see what everyone was playing. I saw some interesting prototypes, some awesome looking hot games, & of course some of the best current games out.
I did decide to hit the vendors area early. I was able to pick up a handful of Dice Masters boosters from Chris Savoie who runs House Rules Gaming in Kissimmee, Florida. He had a wonderful selection of Dice Masters, Star Wars Destiny, board games, & heroclix. I would visit the House Rules Gaming booth several times.
I also ran into Rick Schrand of Tasty Minstrel Games. Rick is one of my favorites to run into at a gaming convention. He is very straightforward & knows what he is talking about.
On my first day at the convention I just really sat & talked with a bunch of people. It is a misconception that us gamers only play games. We are very sociable & very intellectual. We sit around & talk about our lives from favorite games to the people in our families.
That night I learned how to play Fields of Green at the Stronghold booth. Fields of Green was fun to learn & play. As the game wound down the vendors area was closing. This pushed me out to the opening gaming room where I ended up learning how to play Star Wars Destiny. I had actually just purchased the two starters that I needed at the House Rules Gaming booth.
Star Wars Destiny is one of those games that I wanted to get this past winter. Unfortunately I couldn’t get a hold of the starters or even boosters until now. I am glad I ran into the guy that taught me how to play. I ended my night early when I found out that the lock to my hotel room was sticking & not allowing the door to close fully so I went to take care of it.
On Thursday I woke early & headed to the convention. When I walked into the opening gaming room I ran into Brent Spivey, designer of Techno Bowl. We broke out his copy of the game & dove into a teaching game. I had a great time learning how to play. It was like playing a pro game of football without actually hitting the field.
After learning & playing Techno Bowl I made my way to the Cool Stuff Booth to see what they had in the dent & ding section. I did grab a few games & head over to the Mayday booth where I picked up a copy of Garbage Day for $5. Not a bad deal for a simple dexterity game.
I left the con & hit Cafe24 at the hotel & grabbed a ham & cheese pizza to share with the folks & a salad. the salad was very refreshing & the pizza was very tasty.  After eating I headed back to the con to grab a prototype of a game I will be reviewing soon. Then went back to gaming.
I headed over to the Calliope tables & met with Bill Fogarty who was running the demo tables for Calliope Games. I enjoyed learning all about Ancestree coming out in September. I also enjoyed playing Menu Masters which is out right now.
After playing I ended up playing Gravity Warfare. Gravity Warfare is a dexterity game where perfect balance is the key. I believe I was told that Gravity Warfare would be hitting Kickstarter either at the end of July or early August. Hoping to do a review on it. After about an hour of that I decided to head back to the room to get ready for a night at Disney Springs.
Since I was in Orlando I thought it gave me a chance to do something at one of the Disney areas. The best part was is that the Caribe Royale hotel has a bus that picks you up for free & drops you off right at Disney Springs.
This was my first time there. I really enjoyed myself. I ended up visiting almost all of the stores there. I’m a huge Star Wars fan so I decided to pick up a Mandalorian  baseball cap at the Star Wars Outpost.
The Harley-Davidson store was pretty cool. Even got my father to get on one of the motorcycle models they have in the store.
Of course the Lego store was full of fun. Loved the Lego statues around the outside of the store.
After a fun night at Disney Springs I headed back to the hotel to get some rest.
On Friday I headed to the convention center & join a few guys in a game of A Feast For Odin. What a fantastic worker placement game. One I will be sure to pick up in the future. It was a learning game for me but the two plus hours I spent playing went by super fast.
Next I headed back over to the Calliope Games table where I played another game of Ancestree with Bill Fogarty.
After playing Ancestree I hit up the R&R Games booth where I played Pyramid Poker. I ended up buying a copy to play with my father who loves the game of Poker.
I left the R&R booth & headed back over to the “Hot” games area to play a few games of Santorini.
After the few games of Santorini I landed at a table with Eli, Al, & Scott. We played Stone Age, which is another wonderful worker placement game. We discussed their plans of opening a board game cafe sometime in the future. Then we were joined by a few others for a game of Celestia. Which I ended up winning, not bad for a first time player of the game. I love the little airship included with the game.
#gallery-0-35 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-35 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 33%; } #gallery-0-35 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-35 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
After saying my farewells I ended up having dinner back at the hotel. After dinner I went to lounge around in my hotel room for about an hour & headed back over to the convention where I ended up playing a game of The Dice Must Flow with another guy named Chris.
That was the end of my Friday night. Since it was after midnight at that point I headed back to my hotel room to get some much needed sleep.
On Saturday morning I packed up knowing that I was checking out in the afternoon. After putting things in the car I headed back to the convention to line up for the Flea Market. The wait was only about ninety minutes so that wasn’t too bad. I wasn’t looking for a whole lot at the market. I know I was looking for some retro games. I hit the jackpot with G.I. Joe Commando Attack game. It was in near mint condition & only cost me $5. Bargain!
I left the flea market feeling pretty good. I headed back over to wait in the line at the dent & ding booth. It was my fifth time in the line. Grabbed a handful of games each time I went through.
Here is my haul from the convention. This is not including all the promos I picked up along with all the booster packs & other smaller items I purchased.
The Caribe Royale Hotel was definitely a nice venue for a gaming convention. Everyone at the convention was really friendly. Everyone was willing to play a game & to invite anyone in that wanted to play a game.
I did skip out out the panels, meet & greets, & most of the special events. I just wanted to get in as much gaming as possible. Plus I rather enjoyed meeting up with all the gamers from around the world that attended.
I will definitely be traveling back to Orlando next year for the next Dice Tower Con. Here is to another great gaming convention. Hope to see you there next year.
