i feel so stuffy whenever i see general fandom takes on why fiction should always be happy by the end and should always be escapism and needs ao3 tags stamped all over it like the “well ACTUALLY” feelings just leap out i cant help myself

#i do like the push for tws at the start of novels which ive seen a few books do #echoed voice #but the need to ao3 label them is just…. so dumb….#i dont wanna sound like a snob but at the same time. the full on confidence of these ppl claiming that general literature sucks #bc ‘’oh it didnt warn me the ending would be sad thats super manipulative of them. also fanfic is more progressive’’ with full confidence…#like. yall……#maybe i just really like it when a book is intending to tell a darker story and ends w a bittersweet ending at best #bc i do like the whole ‘’heres how we coped with it and its not always the best outcome’’ aspect #but like…. the idea that its problematic or ‘’behind’’ or ‘’grimdark for the sake of it’’ is soooo dumb #ofc an ending CAN be pointlessly dark for the sake of being like ‘’ohhh i UPSET my audience hehehe’’ (like the end of divergent where the mc #died in a really pointless way that didnt support the narratives themes at all) but again. nuance. its not ALWAYS like that #idk the books that impacted me the most as a kid/teen were always the ones that tackled heavier topics like cancer or grief #and werent cleanly resolved by the end. or even if the ending was bittersweet. it was sad but like it left an impression and felt grounded
