Hiiiiii omg your head canons for the fellowship are so cuttteeee I love it. Do you think you could write how the members of the fellowship would be around a character who has a dragon companion? I’m sorry I know that is soooo weird but I literally love dragons so much and Lotr so y’know. Preferably a f reader or just Gn. Sorry if that’s weird and no pressure!!!!🫶🫶
What a fun prompt! I’ve literally thought about this before. I’m picturing you show up at Rivendell just casually with your dragon. Totally breathes fire because that’s cool as shit.
How the Fellowship reacts to a dragon companion
Aragorn:
-Has to do a double take
-wtf
-He’s a chill dude, but this feels unhinged
-He will introduce himself with you only once you’re not with your fire friend
-Once you introduce the two he’s back to his chill self and act like this is totally normal
Legolas:
-Fascinated, and immediately introduces himself to you and your dragon
-Elves have a way with nature and animals so I don’t think he would be scared
-Wary, maybe, but he just wants to pet it
-He sees is as a big puppy
-Will tell you a billion dragon facts
Gimli:
-Listen, dwarves have a bad record with dragons
-Doesn’t trust you, and certainly can’t believe the “beast” could be friendly
-Keeps his distance and is definitely a bit cold to you like he is to Legolas, at first
-He eventually warms up to you but still doesn’t like your companion
-The dragon wouldn’t hurt him, but he doesn’t know that, and the dragon totally takes advantage of that and will scare him
-“I don’t like the way it looks at me”
-Big “it don’t bite, yes it do!” energy
Boromir:
-I just feel like he would not care
-He would be casual about it like the cave troll
-Totally sees the advantage of having a literal fucking dragon on their team
-Talks to it like a person
Frodo:
-You thought his eyes were big before? Well guess what? They are literal saucers
-Mostly knows only of Smaug so he doesn’t have a particularly positive view on the species
-But he’s also nothing if not curious
-Asks you so many questions
-This I think applies to all the hobbits except maybe Sam, but it would be so cute if they cuddled up with the dragon at night to keep warm
Sam:
-Big nope
-He’s heard Bilbo’s stories
-His main priority is keeping Frodo safe
-Probably wouldn’t warm up until he saw Frodo petting it with a big smile
-Would ask if it wants a bowl of stew when you all settle for the night
-Worried it might eat him if he doesn’t keep it fed
Merry:
-Guess what?! You now have a new biggest fan! Congrats!
-No fear in this hobbit
-Maybe that’s not a good thing, but he’s a confident boy
-“Hypothetically how would one go about acquiring such a creature?” “You can’t have a dragon Merry” “…I was asking for a friend”
-Will brag about knowing you and that he’s friends with a dragon when they eventually get back to the shire
Pippin:
-?????
-So confused
-He must have smoked too much and is now hallucinating
-Once he gets over that shock, he’s probably the type to watch from afar, but weary to ask to pet it
-“Do you think we could roast marshmallows with its breath?”
-It’s a genuine question. And yes, the answer is yes
-That is if you like your marshmallows burnt and basically disintegrated
Gandalf:
-He probably invited you to the council
-Wary because he knows what dragons are capable of, but trusts you so therefore he trusts your judgment
-He’s got his eagles, you’ve got your dragon, unstoppable duo
*Bonus Elrond:
-“Um…whatcha got there?” “A smoothie”
-Wouldn’t let you in until Gandalf convinced him
-Then he just decides he’s seen so much shit that he shouldn’t even be surprised anymore by anything
I definitely don’t love all of these answers, some feel ooc, so as always I may edit when I get a different idea. It’s like how my mind will be blank when doing an assignment but the second I submit it I have so many better answers

I think it's interesting that when Gandalf describes Denethor's ability to "perceive, if he bends his will thither, much of what is passing in the minds of men," he ties it less to his wisdom or general insightfulness (though he possesses both) than to his difference from "other men of this time," his near total Númenóreanness, and as bolded here, the active exercise of his will.
Tolkien also attributes Denethor's resilience against Sauron (by contrast with Saruman) to not only his right to use the Anor-stone, but "great strength of will." He notes that Sauron had no servant with greater mental powers than Saruman or Denethor, and Gandalf remarks that Denethor was "too great" to be subdued to Sauron's will.
Denethor and Gandalf have a strange and unsettling silent confrontation, carried on by their gazes, yet it strikes Pippin as like "a line of smouldering fire" and "as if reading each other's mind." Gandalf afterwards says Pippin was stuck between two "terrible old men," lumping Denethor in with himself. Pippin also sees some kind of kinship between Denethor and Gandalf, as Sam saw between Faramir and Gandalf.
In his letters, Tolkien said that the ancient Númenóreans became barely distinguishable from Elves in appearance and in their powers of mind. In Unfinished Tales, he notes that they loved their horses, and when a Númenórean had a strong bond with a horse, it was said that the horse could be summoned "by thought alone."
In LOTR, Faramir—who has inherited Denethor's Númenóreanness/wizardliness—has a reputation for command over both animals and men. When everyone else is thrown by their horses upon being chased by five Nazgûl, he not only keeps his seat, but mysteriously gets his horse to ride back towards the Nazgûl. And during the retreat across the Pelennor, the soldiers in the city conclude that Faramir must be with the men who are managing to retreat in order, repeating Beregond's remark that he has some undefined command over both men and beasts.
Gandalf suggests that this is a result of Faramir pitting himself against the effects of the Nazgûl in some way, but his abilities (whatever they are) are outmatched. In the event, the effect of Faramir's Aura of Courage commanding abilities remains until he's shot and finally falls to the Black Breath.
Faramir also makes repeated references to perceiving or reading things in Gollum's mind. At one point, he describes Gollum's mind as dark and closed, yet unable to prevent Faramir from detecting that he's holding something back about Cirith Ungol specifically. Noticeably, this only happens when Faramir orders Gollum to look at him (which Gollum does "unwillingly"), and the light drains from his eyes as he meets Faramir's. It seems decidedly reminiscent of the later Gandalf vs Denethor duel-by-eye-contact.
Faramir's exact words about Gollum's secrecy are "That much I perceived clearly in his mind," in reference to his earlier questioning of him. He says that he can "read" previous murders in Gollum and Gollum cries out in pain when he tries to lie to him.
When Faramir gives staves to Frodo and Sam, he says that a "virtue" of finding and returning has been placed on them, with zero explanation of what he means by that. He adds a hope that the virtue will not altogether fail under Sauron's power in Mordor. He describes the people who did the woodwork but not who placed the virtues (it doesn't seem inherent to the wood itself, given his phrasing).
We do know that Dúnedain can potentially embed enchantments into items. The Barrow-daggers carried by Merry and Pippin are specifically enchanted against the Witch-king of Angmar by an unknown Dúnadan of the North, and when Merry stabs the Witch-king, the dagger breaks enough spells for Éowyn's ordinary sword to finish the job.
Meanwhile, Aragorn uses his healing powers to help the city, wishing for the presence of Elrond, because he is their eldest of their kind and more powerful. Aragorn, also, has at least some part of this ability to actively exercise his will and mental powers, perhaps an equal share, though he uses it less often.
In the book, he doesn't physically attack the Mouth of Sauron, but instead holds his gaze (again, eye contact is important!). There's another silent struggle that involves no weaponry or any other contact.
He prevails in some way over the Mouth of Sauron (not a warped creature of Sauron in the book, but a cruel Númenórean who has "learned great sorcery"). The Mouth indignantly says he has diplomatic immunity and can't be attacked like this.
But, I mean, maybe they're all just smart and perceptive, it's really unclear.

Do you know if LOTR universe has such magical creatures as phoenixes, for example? Thank you very much!
Oh, gosh, if you’re thinking about getting into LOTR for the first time, there are so many magical creatures waiting for you there! As a fantasy writer, Tolkien made full use of fantastical creatures of all kinds. That includes:
1. Our main protagonists come from four different “peoples” of Middle Earth: humans but also elves, dwarves and hobbits.
2. There are a TON of magical animals that have the same name and general appearance as in the real world (eagles, spiders, horses) but Tolkien gives some of them high intelligence, the ability to speak/understand speech, and complex societies of their own. He also extends those traits to some trees (ents), and there’s even a suggestion that a feature of the Earth like a mountain can have thoughts, wants, moods, etc.
3. He made liberal use of magical animals that are entirely fictional (dragons, wargs, fell beasts), some of which have human-like intelligence and some don’t. A lot of these are creepy crawly villainous types that exist alongside fantasy staples like trolls and goblins.
4. LOTR’s Middle Earth is situated in a broader world that has a god-like figure, a pantheon of demi-gods, and a host of spirits who serve those demi-gods, some of which take decidedly creature-ly form. There are fire spirits, for example, called balrogs who serve the rogue/dark demi-god and have a demon-like appearance of flames and shadows.
If you’re looking for something specifically phoenix-like, I’m not sure there’s a good one-to-one comparison. But based on the traits of a phoenix (association with fire, the sun, rebirth), I’d suggest Arien, one of the servants of the demi-gods. She was a fire spirit but wasn’t corrupted by the rogue demi-god and instead took on the job of guiding the sun across the sky. So she’s got both fire and sun associations, and because the sunrise brings morning and the start of a fresh new day, she’s also kind of representative of rebirth. But I should say that Arien doesn’t appear directly in LOTR (outside of references to the sun as she/her); her story comes more from the Silmarillion.
Is that helpful at all? I do think if you enjoy magical creatures at all, you’ll be happy with what you find in LOTR!

Above and beyond the whole “if you buy anything Harry Potter related you’re a terrible person” / “the people saying that are aesthetic stalinists” blow-up... I have to ask “but WHY tho?”
Deathly Hallows just came out thirteen years ago. And all of the Harry Potter movies were enormous productions just to make sure they could get all the materiel from the books in there... and the books, even the latter ones, were for the most part not that long! (The huge hardcovers that started with the back three have large type and wide margins; they’re shorter than you think.)
This is the sort of thing I would expect someone to have another crack at in like... I dunno, 2070 or some shit. Say what you will about Disney, they’re not re-making the original Star Wars movies. Amazon (or whoever the fuck holds the theatrical rights now) isn’t re-making the LOTR  movies. There is no serious effort to re-make the Back to the Future movies, or the first two Ghostbusters, or anything like that.
Disney IS mining their classic catalog for live-action remakes, but you can at least make an argument that the different medium allows for different creative choices. They are not just making another animated Beauty and the Beast.
I have nothing against the occasional remake. The remake of True Grit is superior to the original (and launched Hailee Steinfeld’s career) for example. The Ocean’s 11 remake is superior to the Sinatra original. But there were three, four, five decade intervals there! Not thirteen years.
This just seems dumb and wearying.

✨ about this blog ✨
★ hey, i'm starlight or star! i'm in my 20s. i'm genderfluid (between being a woman, a man, and agender) and i constantly change my pronouns in my bio but they/them is always fine!!
★ my ask box is always open and i love talking about my favorite characters and ships and sharing my thoughts in general! i also love being tagged in things. and for mutuals my DMs are always open too 💖
★ i have an anime sideblog over at @ritsukageyamas, a blog dedicated to the emperor's new groove at @kuzcoskingdom, and a stim blog where i make my own stimmy gifs and post stimboards over at @glitteringstardust! i've got a handful of other sideblogs too but i'm not really using any of them atm. if/when i become more active on them in the future i'll add them here.
★ sometimes when i happen to be in the mood, i make gifs and edits on here too! but mostly i just reblog a ton of stuff and ramble about whatever. occasionally i liveblog things.
★ my main fandoms are basically listed in my bio but i also decided to ramble about them and include some other assorted info under the cut!
★ i'm a huge animation nerd!! i especially love walt disney animation and pixar films. some of my favorites include beauty and the beast, tangled, frozen, toy story 1-3, onward, and coco. i love all kinds of other animated films too but you can expect to see lots of disney/pixar stuff in general on here as it's basically my longest lasting special interest.
★ i am also deeply in love with kingdom hearts and it's one of the things you can expect to see a lot of posts about. riku is one of my favorite fictional characters of all time and sorikai means the world to me.
★ if you couldn't guess by my url i'm also brainrotting hard over twisted wonderland lately and will likely continue doing so for the foreseeable future. i have soooo much love for so many of the characters i literally can't even pick a favorite dorm. but riddle and idia are practically tied for the spot of my fave character and i ship riddle/floyd and idia/vil very hard.
★ i am very into pokemon but especially the hoenn, unova, alola, and paldea regions and the pokemon mystery dungeon series. love pokemon adventures/pokespe as well.
★ also majorly obsessed with baldur's gate 3 at the moment. especially gale. and elenion, my silly little half-elf bard guy that i romanced gale with 💜 and i don't see this changing anytime soon either.
★ so the above things are kinda the main fandoms you'll see on here but my brain is also constantly hopping between other interests and getting me in the mood to reblog and talk about different things!! some of those other things can include uhhhh the PJO universe, utdr, a3! act addict actors, twewy, the original sherlock holmes stories + granada TV series, LOTR, ace attorney, avatar the last airbender, neopets, and also just. so many other things. unfortunately i shove 90% of what i like onto here instead of having sideblogs for the most part.
★ i don't have a dni, i just block people who make me uncomfortable and even then i don't block people very often! so just be chill and respectful and you're probably fine.
★ also please please let me know if you need something tagged and i'll do my best to keep it in mind!!
★ oh yeah. and if you wanna follow me on twitter you can but i'm rarely active these days!
★ hmm i guess that's all, so if you actually read this thank you so much and i hope you enjoy your day!!! 💖

Also watching some Stupid Drama (big sigh) yet again go down in the fandom tag because Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is being tagged as... lotr and also rop because it's the show's fucking name... and it makes me wonder why specifically Tolkien who set out to create a mythology is so special that No One is allowed to change his works.
Bro my favorite Romeo and Juliet take is done with zombies and they both survive. My second favorite is with lions and again they both survive. My third is with a bunch of country bumpkins.
My favorite Odessey is also done with country bumpkins.
My favorite Beauty and the Beast was an Arabic translation, also with lions.
I loved Ghibli's take on Howl's Moving Castle even if the entire plot and tone of the book is dramatically different from the movie. To this day it's one of my favorite Ghibli movies.
Never forget that DBZ started as an incredibly loose adaption of The Journey West and it's now a worldwide smash hit anime that has absolutely nothing to do with the source material outside of "martial arts" and "Son Goku".
Why is it specifically Tolkien that it must adhere 100% to the letter of the book? Why is he so special? Other great authors who came before him have had their works adapted and changed at times beyond the point of recognition. Why is it just this one particular guy?

Tears of the Kingdom is fucking beautiful
Tumblr media
MILD SPOILERS
Okay so I have just completed the Great Sky Island (but am definitely gonna go back as some places I couldn’t get to and I need to stock up on stuff plus the nice constructs like the cooking ones etc are so freakin cute) but man this is so epic I mean I love Breath of the Wild even though I was late getting it, I’m not a gamer but Zelda and Animal Crossing are my jam and what I love about BOTW and TOTK is its you own adventure like sometimes I literally just ride my horse around looking at pretty ruins. TOTK is as phenomenal and beautiful as BOTW with that extra element of fun which makes different from BOTW because of all these new tricks and such but BOTW is magical and epic and charming and TOTK is too and I love all the new things like brightbloom flowers and a weird frog in a cave THERES SO MUCH and by FUCK the moment I dived from the great sky island down to Hyrule CHILLS MAN. I just love the imagination, the lore, the humour, the adventure, the beauty (and the fact that someone said Zelda is like lotr and I think thats why I love it so much) I’m just immersed I got zero sleep last night playing it xD But am really glad I figured everything out by myself. BOTW I had watched a lot of people play so I kinda had a plan going in like I wanted to unlock all the map, get all the armour etc to be able to freely travel and I loved that (and I used guides only for labyrinths and asshole shrines I couldn’t get past lol) but TOTK I wanna try and do it with no help. I haven’t even finished my last divine beast in BOTW xD I just love these games so much and I feel so excited and hyped playing TOTK im sobbing ON THE FLOOR its everything

1, 2, 3, 4, 8, 17, 22 & 29 <33 (sorry if that’s too many hehe)
hello beautiful, I’m so sorry it’s taken me so long to get around to this, these asks really make my day so thank you for sending them in 💌
─── · 。゚☆: *.☽ .* :☆゚. ─── 1. if someone wanted to really understand you, what would they read, watch, and listen to?
ooh this is honestly such a beautiful question, I would say:
listen to:
who i’d be (shrek the musical)
atlas: nine (sleeping at last)
a different kind of human (AURORA)
best day ever (spongebob squarepants the musical)
michael in the bathroom (be more chill)
for forever (dear evan hansen)
(these are LITERALLY fragments of me, each reflecting a different part of who I am, from my spotify playlist of my personal aesthetic)
read:
loveless by alice oseman (mainly for the aspec rep, not so much my personal experience and some of the friendship drama stresses me out)
the lost island of tamarind (nadia aguiar - my favourite childhood book AND the namesake of my animal crossing island)
ingo (helen dunmore - other favourite childhood book)
the night circus (erin morgenstern - my favourite book)
watch:
the paddington films (other than bttf, they’re my favourite series)
as of literally this week the lotr trilogy (I AM sam)
the secret life of walter mitty (favourite movie, I am also walter)
matilda (matilda and I are one and the same)
2. have you ever found a writer who thinks just like you? if so, who?
hmm, at a stretch I’d say either john green because of his love of analysing literature, or alice oseman because we have similar queer identities and her writing, energy, and acceptance of people reminds me of my favourite qualities of myself
3. list your fandoms and one character from each that you identify with.
I. LOVE. THIS. ONE.
...
harry potter (THE FANDOM NOT THE TRANSPHOBE) - remus lupin
fantastic beasts - newt scamander
lotr - samwise gamgee, pippin took
the maze runner - newt
criminal minds - spencer reid
avengers - peter parker, bruce banner, steve rogers (a combination of the three)
eternals - druig
dear evan hansen - evan hansen (but not the lying)
be more chill - michael mell
the chronicles of narnia - lucy pevensie
dirk gently’s holistic detective agency - dirk gently
star trek: the next generation - data/deanna
bbc ghosts: pat butcher (my darling, also literally me)
...
if you’ve noticed that these are literally just the characters that I write for, shhhh
if you’ve noticed that they’re almost all cisgender men, double shhh
4. do you like your name?  is there another name you think would fit you better?
oof this is a loaded question. I do like my name, it has sentimental value in my family and I think it suits me. it annoys me when people call me “danielle” because I feel like that erases my italian ancestry.
I do have another name I think would fit the fluidity of my gender identity better but that’s very much not something I’ve told anyone about.
I think it’s nice getting to act in theatre and write stories because it allows me to use other names and be other people and that’s extremely freeing.
8. what musical artists have you most felt connected to over your lifetime?
billy joel. he’s been hugely influential in my music taste, my love of storytelling, and my love of piano playing ever since my dad introduced me to his music as a kid. he holds an extremely special place in my heart for that reason, and also he’s a synesthete like me and our colour associations line up (which is super rare) so that’s cool too!
sleeping at last I really love as well, I feel like ryan sees the world in a very similar way to me, and we’re both enneagram nine’s. his podcast on that enneagram type made me feel so deeply seen and sometimes I listen to it as a comfort when I’m down and feeling lost.
I’m sure there's others but those are the two big ones that deeply resonate with me.
17. would you say your tumblr is a fair representation of the “real you”?
I would say my tumblr is a representation of the best version of me, the me I’d like to be. It’s a lot more aesthetic, thoughtful, and calming than I view myself in real life. A bit of a safe space, if you will.
I’m a lot brighter, louder, more energetic, and more comedic in real life. my tumblr is a representation of the way I feel most calm and centred in my identity (similar to my pinterest aesthetic boards).
22. list the top five things you spend the most time doing, in order.
1. trying to make people laugh
2. singing
3. watching movies
4. writing
5. reading
(special mentions: juggling/sign language - which I learned during 2020 when I couldn’t leave the house)
29. three songs that you connect with right now.
ooh, this is a goody
1. there’s still a light in the house - valley
2. people watching - conan gray
3. so will I - ben platt

fic tag game
aaahhh @vishcount thank you for tagging me!!! These are so fun and I adored reading about your fic journey~!  ೖ(⑅σ̑ᴗσ̑)ೖ ❤
OH as a note!! For the ppl I tag at the end I don’t expect you to read all of this bc it’s A Lot!!! but I figured you might want to do this game yourself? haha :)
Name: cross-d-a shortened version of my first ever username. unfortunately stuck with it now haha but i’m fond of it :p wish it was cuter tho!!
Posting the rest of this under the cut so it doesn’t eat up people’s dashes!!
(。•̀ᴗ-)✧
Fandoms:
oKAY YIKES there are....honestly too many too name. I’ve got a short and obsessive attention span so it’s either all or nothing with me usually. When I can stay in a fandom for a long period of time it’s a miracle. I’ll name the bigger ones that I’ve all written fic for! Even if I’ve never posted them haha
Right now I’m very firmly into Daomu Biji (dmbj). It feels like it’s both got a crap ton of content and yet barely anything at all haha. Maybe because the English fandom is so small. But at least there are a bunch of dramas and books!!! I really, really, really adore dmbj so much!! And a large part of that is the fandom!!! It's been a really cool and unique experience! Everyone in it is truly so kind and wonderful, and I’ve made some really incredible friends because of it (looking at you vish!! ❤). I’ve got a bunch of wips, but I’ve only posted two fics for dmbj!
Before this I was very into Guardian and mdzs. MDZS was my first foray into cdramas and Guardian’s Zhu Yilong really suckered me into watching more haha I also have fics for both these fandoms!
My very first fandoms were Fullmetal Alchemist, D. Gray-Man and Naruto. My very old ffnet account has fics for these and I’ve got a bunch of newer wips on my tablet. Then Star Trek, Twilight, BBC Merlin, Sherlock, Death Note, Harry Potter, How to Train Your Dragon, Battlestar Galactica, Avatar the Last Airbender and Marvel were a few of my main ones in high school. Plus a bunch of anime (like Fruits Basket! and Kuroshitsuji and Natsume Yuujinchou).
Then college hit and I renewed my childhood love of Tolkien (mainly lotr and the Hobbit), and Star Wars. I also found Teen Wolf! Then after college it was Stranger Things.
I find myself in a cycle of mild fondness and complete obsession with these fandoms haha I go back to Star Wars at least once a year!! Then I’m in the gffa hole for a few months. Marvel also reoccurs, depending on how interested I am in new content! Star Trek I always always always go back to. TOS is my comfort show and it will never fade from my heart ❤
But for now I’m stuck in cdrama hell and I love it
Tropes:
Time travel, found family, whump+hurt/comfort, fairytale-like elements, resurrective immortality (thanks to a “Nine Lives” Hobbit fic), CROSSOVERS
I’m a slut for all these things so they often worm their way into my plots haha
I also just- love weird premises. I think that’s the anime influencing me haha
Fic I spent most time on:
My series he leaves sand and stardust in my wake (main fic is hurricane on the edge of oblivion), I have...spent five years on now. I have done so much research for this fic it’s insane.
The premise is force ghost!Obi-Wan getting shunted back into his tiny 10 year old self. I incorporate a shit ton of legends and I try to stay as canon as possible. I basically want this au to feel like it’s 1000% plausible while still getting all my gay shit. It’s chock full of whump, redemption, found family, minor characters turning into major characters, and I’ve got slavery uprising on the mind, too. It’s just- everything I could ever want to explore in the Star Wars universe basically.
It’s my first big project. I started doodling and scribbling ideas in the margins of my notebook in my Scottish History class. I adore it so so so much. But, because of my hyperfixation and fleeting intense obsession with things it makes it- really difficult to consistently update. I leave it for months at a time and I am constantly guilt-ridden about it. Because it’s my baby and I have a lot of wonderful readers. I fear I’ll never be able to finish it. Especially since I’ve written so much and I’m still only in the beginning of it. ( ; A ; )
Also, I’ve spent so much time with Xanatos, Feemor and Bruck that they just feel like mine now. I can’t read any fics that involve them, it’s too strange. Which is a damn shame because I love them so much haha OH ALSO!! I think it’s the first really big fic to include those three?? So I’m very proud about that haha (I’ve had so many ppl comment about how they actually Give A Shit about these three and are Invested bc of me haha)
Favorite fic(s) you’ve written:
hurricane on the edge of oblivion (with nowhere to go) (Star Wars)
My long-term passion project. My love-letter to Star Wars, I suppose. Reading it now I feel like a lot of it is clunky or long-winded, but I think it really shows the foundation of my writing today :) Main characters are Obi-Wan, Xanatos Du Crion, Qui-Gon Jinn, Bruck Chun and Feemor. Eventually we’ll get to Maul, Savage, Feral, Shmi Skywalker, (more!) Ahsoka, Anakin and a shit ton of clones ❤
things we hunger for (Guardian)
My Ye Zun self-indulgent fic. It’s a time travel amnesia Weilanzun! Honestly has some of my fav writing I’ve ever done. It’s so soft and really indulges in the hurt/comfort. It gives Ye Zun the friends and family I think he deserves. Also, he gets to grow into a (mostly!) functional person and I adore him.
the beast that slumbers within your soul (mdzs)
Jiang Cheng centric fic!! I feel like all my favourite fics I’ve written are love letters haha. This is one def my love letter to Jiang Cheng. This fic possessed me for two whole days. I wrote 16k in almost one sitting. I went to sleep at 6 in the morning bc I couldn’t stop writing. And when I drifted off I kept thinking of new ideas so I’d whip out my phone and write down lines and notes. I- have never ever ever felt that way about anything. It was- insane. It felt insane. It was so amazing. I’m still riding the memory of that high.
Basically Jiang Cheng actually finds Baoshan Sanren and it turns out she’s a fox demon and Jiang Cheng is descended from wolves. It’s- okay I said the fic above this had my favourite writing?? That was a lie. This has my favourite writing I’ve ever done. It’s unfinished bc I am in dmbj hell but I am still excited about the next chapter which features Wei Wuxian’s pov!!
the whispers of spirits (dmbj)
My current passion project. In a way it kinda feels similar to hurricane? Bc multiple povs, incorporating different aspects of canon (we’ll get there!! I promise!), shit ton of research, etc. etc. I really really really love it for so many reasons. I’m basically taking all the things I was unsatisfied with in Reboot and Sha Hai and running with it. Found family and whump galore! It’s also a love letter to the women of dmbj who really deserve so so so much better.
Honourable mention to:
One Day (you’ll have given more of yourself than is meant to be taken) (Marvel)
This fic also kinda possessed me. I just- couldn’t get rid of the idea of a trans!Thor. And I mean a mtf Thor! It’s just? So many people look at Thor and go “that’s a Real Man.” Full stop. They never think there could be anything more, and it really really really bothered me. So I wrote out my feelings. I’m not trans. I don’t have that experience at all. I’ve had issues and confusion about my gender but nothing like this. I just wanted to do justice to this idea of Thor in my head. And I still feel a bit nervous having posted it. But I've gotten so many comments from people who really connected with what I’ve written? So I’m very very thankful I wrote it and it has a very special place in my heart. It’s a very cathartic fic.
Fic I spent least time on:
Probably we rise (Star Wars) and I think it shows haha. I wrote it in response to Dave Filoni posting a drawing of Ahsoka and Gandalf telling her “People thought I was dead, too, and look how that turned out...” So I incorporated Ahsoka (and Din and Grogu and Ezra!!!) into the ending of Rise of Skywalker, kinda explaining how I think they could all still be alive. :)
Longest fic:
hurricane is my longest fic (159k) but I’m kinda worried whispers will eclipse that.....
Shortest fic:
Of my posted ones it’s The Five Moments it Took Tony and Scott to Admit They Were Best Friends (and the first time they ever did), currently clocks at 1.6k. It’s unfinished tho so maybe that doesn’t count.... otherwise it’s we rise which is completed and 2k.
Most hits/kudos/comments/bookmarks:
hurricane overall has the most of all these. Though I don’t think hits counts as much bc it’s multi-chapter. If you discount multi-chapter stuff, most hits goes to my obikin smutfic Homecoming, bc people are horny af haha
Fic you want to rewrite/expand on:
If I had energy I’d like to rewrite the beginning of hurricane bc it feels so so wordy. I’d want to expand on One Day bc I really would like to write a whole series with trans!Thor. And like- I’d really like the focus to finish any of my WIPs.
Share a bit of a WIP: I really wanna share my Guardian/dmbj crossover that I started back in August. Bc I adore the idea of wu xie&shen wei&ye zun triplets! Plus time travel!!! I dunno if I’ll ever finish it tho ( ; A ; ) It just feels like a lot to deal with right now.
This scene takes place during the Mountain Awl arc. Guardian crew and desperado fam run across each other at the village! Wu Xie has recently found out that he’s adopted and he’s searching for answers in the area Sanshu originally found amnesiac!toddler!Wu Xie in :) Gonna pull two snippets bc I’m v excited and this might be the only time anyone else sees this fic haha:
“Oh?” Pangzi focuses on Yunlan now, lips twisting. “You think I’ve ‘got the wrong guy,’ huh?” He laughs, but it’s not a nice sound. “That’s rich! Are you that cocky or are you just stupid?”
Bristling, Yunlan drops his hands and scowls. “Excuse me?”
“Sir,” Shen Wei tries. “I think—”
Pangzi’s eyes snap back to Shen Wei, sharp and blazing. “How dare you fucking steal his face!”
What?
Automatically, Zhao Yunlan turns to Shen Wei, but the professor looks just as shell-shocked as Zhao Yunlan feels which- is seriously something. Since everything about Shen Wei is so carefully controlled, kept to the minimum. Except for those delightful little smiles that bloom across his lovely face, or the startled little bursts of laughter that fall from his lips. Or even when anger and frustration spark across his features, cracking his calm veneer open enough that he can see a glimmer of what lies beneath, the fire in those eyes. Zhao Yunlan delights in those moments, makes a game of making Shen Wei’s control slip.
He tells himself it’s nothing more than a game. Nothing more than trying to find out what makes Shen Wei tick.
Zhao Yunlan’s always been very bad at lying to himself. Or very good. Depending on who you’re asking.
“What the hell are you talking about?” Yunlan splutters.
But before anyone can say anything else, a very familiar voice calls:
“Pangzi? What’s wrong?”
Yunlan can feel Shen Wei stiffen, and Yunlan himself is pulled to that voice like a planet in orbit, like the inevitable plummet to the ground.
Another shadow wavers in the doorway before it steps out onto the dirt. Light illuminates shaggy hair, limning it gold, sharply casting everything else in shadow. But as the figure nears, the contrast softens until Yunlan can see the newcomer’s face properly and- and—
“Wu Xie!” Pangzi growls. “We’ve got ourselves an impostor!”
The man wearing Shen Wei’s face steps up to them, brows furrowed and mouth pulled down into a sharp frown. He glances between them, eyes landing on Shen Wei. His scowl deepens. He opens his mouth, but then—
“Wu Xie?” Shen Wei breathes, all trembly and lost and hopeless.
Heart in his throat, Yunlan turns to Shen Wei again. Turns and flinches at that stricken look upon Shen Wei’s pale pinched face.
“A-Xie?” Shen Wei chokes. “Didi?”
and
Pangzi snorts. “Professor?”
“I-it’s true!”
Startled Yunlan swings his attention over to Jiajia who clenches her backpack to her chest, face screwed up in admirable determination. “P-professor Shen took me and Xiao Quan on a field trip to investigate an archeological site around here!”
“Oh?” Wu Xie drawls all slow and amused. “Well, what a coincidence. We’re archeologists, too.”
“With guns?” Yunlan bites out.
Wu Xie raises a brow, grin full of teeth. “Well, you can never be too prepared.”
“Right,” Yunlan drawls right back. “Are you a professor, too, then? You come here with your students?”
Wu Xie outright grins. “You could say that, I suppose.”
Out of the corner of his eye, one of the men rolls his eyes. He’s the one with sharp features, glasses and looped earbuds. Does he think it’s appropriate to listen to music at a time like this? Yunlan admires the man’s gall.
aahhhh vish thanks so much again for tagging me!! This was so fun to relive my fic memories!! I’m gonna tag @alwaysaslutforshakespeare @jockvillagersonly @tehfanglyfish @lichelleme @undyingsunshine @humanlighthouse  @thewindsofsong I’m curious about your guys’ writing and fandom journey!! As always, no pressure to actually complete this!! I just thought it was fun ❤
Wow if you read all of this I am very humbled and impressed, thank you!!

I’ve been thinking of Denethor and Faramir’s more spectacular abilities, and while LOTR’s magic systems are very soft (which is fine!), I nevertheless find it entertaining to try and figure out what’s going on with them.
Especially for fic purposes.
I know it comes up in some of the ancillary texts, but I’m mostly thinking of what we see in LOTR. So. Here’s what comes to mind:
ETA: it’s long and rambling, but there’s a summary at the end.
- Their abilities extend beyond general insightfulness. For one, these abilities are attributed to Númenor; Tolkien said that Númenóreans were almost indistinguishable from Elves in powers of mind. More importantly, multiple characters explicitly describe Denethor and Faramir as seeing into others’ minds (Gandalf in particular is very clear about this).
- Direct proximity is apparently not necessary (though it might be helpful; Faramir orders Gollum to look at him in his most overt use of his abilities). Gandalf says that Denethor can read the thoughts of people from a distance, if he exerts his will to do so.
(My question here is if the ability is relatively passive with people immediately before them, but takes exertion from a distance, or if it always requires deliberate effort.)
- Gandalf says it’s “dangerous” to try deceiving Denethor, and Gollum squeals in pain when he lies to Faramir.
(I’m particularly unclear if this one is the result of active effort or just an aspect of their being.)
- It’s more tenuous, but there seems to also be some power of command built in; Faramir is repeatedly described as having a special ability to command both animals and people, and is the only person in his party who can control his horse when the Ringwraiths go after them—he’s even able to get his horse to ride towards the Ringwraiths. His soldiers hold together as long as he’s around and conscious; Gandalf implies that he’s going up against the Witch-king in some amorphous way.
(Again: active or passive?)
- Their abilities do have limitations. Faramir says that Gollum’s mind is largely closed to him, and isn’t 100% sure of what Éowyn feels about him. However, Gollum isn’t able to wholly close him out; Faramir sees “clearly in his mind” that Gollum knows something about Cirith Ungol that he’s not saying, that malice is eating at him, and that he’s committed murder before. Faramir also knows a lot of what’s going on in Éowyn’s head, just not everything. Denethor is outclassed by Gandalf (duh).
- There’s some sort of ... combat component?? We see it with Denethor and Gandalf’s mental fencing, and then later with Aragorn and the Mouth of Sauron; Aragorn does some mind thing and the Mouth complains that he’s being attacked.
- Speaking of Aragorn, he seems to know quite a lot about Faramir’s state of mind and being despite never having interacted with him. IMO it reads as quite similar to Faramir knowing so much about Éowyn; they both have heard some things from other people, but know much more than they really could have been told.
(At the same time, I’m not sure that Aragorn’s powers of mind operate identically to theirs. If they do, he uses them much more sparingly. Maybe it’s a personal choice, maybe it’s just not as much his family’s thing and takes more effort, maybe it seems less pervasive with him just because we see so much more of him, idk.)
- One of the things I wonder about is how closely related it is to what e.g. Galadriel does. Faramir’s interrogation of Gollum seems roughly similar, though more limited. Later, we see that Galadriel, Elrond, and Celeborn (iirc) can sort of ... commune in thought or exchange thoughts or something like that, instead of talking. We don’t know if Faramir or Denethor could do that with anyone afaik; it’s hard to think of anyone they would have done it with (probably not each other!), though perhaps there’s an element of it in Aragorn’s healing.
I’m also wondering if ... I mean, it seems unlikely that they had actual training (esp Denethor). Maybe part of the reason why Denethor and Faramir are picking people’s minds 24/7 is that they don’t know how not to, and encountering an Elf with similar kinds of powers would be really weird and uncomfortable for all concerned.
- There’s also a way in which they’re able to bring pure willpower to bear; Denethor trusted his abilities to withstand Sauron, and Tolkien remarks that he wasn’t wholly wrong, since Sauron was unable to dominate him—partly because Denethor had the right to use the palantír, but firstly because of his own mental power. Aragorn is able to challenge Sauron through the Orthanc-stone (again, both through willpower and rightful possession) though it’s a major effort. Aragorn attributes Faramir’s resistance to the Black Breath to his willpower.
- I’m not 100% sure about this one, but there seems some kind of ... idk, charisma bonus? Pippin takes one look at Faramir and is just kind of bowled over by his Númenoreanness and Elvishness; it’s less ‘high’ than Aragorn’s, but also more immediate, and Pippin’s all ‘I would follow him aNYWHERE’ before they’ve even met.
(This seems potentially related to the command-over-man-and-beast thing.)
- A sort of open question is what Sam’s and Pippin’s association of Denethor and Faramir with wizards (specifically Gandalf) is about. It happens twice (and Gandalf also lumps himself in with Denethor, though he’s naturally stronger). It’s just kind of ... huh?? Gandalf certainly has some greater ability of this kind, given his interactions with Denethor. It’s also limited in its own way, because iirc he had to threaten Gollum to get the whole story out of him, but a) Maiar are hardly omnipotent, even more powerful ones than Olórin, and b) his natural powers have been circumscribed anyway.
Nevertheless, why Denethor and Faramir have a ‘likeness’ to freaking Maiar is nowhere explained and I’m just ... okay, Tolkien. Fine. Wait, actually, what?!
Well, the House of the Stewards are descendants of Elros in multiple drafts of the Appendices (though not via Elendil’s direct male line), and in pragmatic terms it’s likely that any house like theirs would actually be descended from Elros many times over. So ... idk, maybe some of Melian’s powers diffused through the Elrosian houses of Númenor, and their ancestors’ share crops up now and again in the family. So their abilities would be much more restricted than an actual Maia’s, but of the same kind. Then again, maybe it’s some other ... thing.
Anyway, tl;dr—my ultimate thoughts atm are basically:
By virtue of their Númenórean throwback...ness, Denethor and Faramir have a wide range of powerful mental abilities that can be resisted, but only wholly overcome by someone more powerful than they are. Beyond some degree of mind-reading, either or both seem able to detect lies, exert command over people and animals, resist external domination (Denethor and Faramir to Ar-Pharazôn: RIP but we’re different), and participate in some kind of mental combat. Aragorn at least partially shares in these abilities, though he has others of his own, like the kingly healing. Their abilities and air are also associated with Maiar, especially Gandalf, for some unknown reason, though they are obviously much more limited. It’s not clear how much deliberate exertion goes into using their abilities, though at least some of them take effort.
(I still have a lot of questions!!!)

I was tagged by @mandalorianess to list my ten favourite female characters from ten different fandoms and then tag ten people.  If you want to do it, congratulations, you’re tagged.
I know I’ll think of more once I finish, but for now:
Lúthien Tinúviel from The Silmarillion, badass queen who kicked Sauron’s ass and duped Morgoth like a boss.  Iconic.
Arwen from LotR.  People say she didn’t do anything but I always liked her quiet strength and resolve.  Also Liv Tyler’s commentary on the Extended Editions DVDs was really formative in young me’s understanding of feminism, and liking Arwen means I got warned really early about how misogynistic fandom would be when little me first ventured onto the internet.
Belle from Disney’s animated Beauty and the Beast.  One of my earliest memories is wanting to read so bad just like she could.
Mulan from Mulan.  She is so kickass.  I spent hours with my Mulan doll pretending the side of my bed was the mountainside so she could blow up my Shan Yu McDonald’s toy.
Rey from the sequel trilogy.  Despite being completely butchered by the sequels I loved how she was a straight hero’s journey character in TFA.  And as long as I live I will never forget refusing to hope that the girl would be the hero, and then seeing her take up that lightsaber and kick Kylo Ren’s ass.  It was awesome.  Representation matters.
Revan from KotOR.  She’s a woman to me no matter what else Legends/canon/how others see their Revan so I’m counting her here.  An incredibly flawed yet strong character who (in my Light Side playthrough) went on an amazing and meaningful redemption arc.
Cara Dune from The Mandalorian.  Those biceps alone would do it but also I love how strong and loyal she is.  And how kickass she is.  And while I like the ship, I love how she and Mando are ride or die besties in the show.
Peli Motto from The Mandalorian even though it said ten different fandoms. The epitome of "do no harm but take no shit” and she’s not afraid to yell at a fully armed and armored Mandalorian for the sake of a child who she demands fair compensation for watching, making her an inspiration to childcare workers.
Hermione Granger from Harry Potter, because I am also a know-it-all nerdy asshole.
Elizabeth Bennet from Pride and Prejudice.  Snarker extraordinaire and sticks to her guns with her standards for a relationship, but is also willing to admit when she’s wrong and reexamine her own biases, a difficult skill that more people could stand to learn.
Honorary mentions:  Risha Drayen, Mission Vao, Jedi Exile, Éowyn, Aredhel, Belladonna Took, Leia Organa, Bultar Swan, Hera Syndulla, Esmeralda, Professor McGonagall, probably even more once I hit post

🍃🍃  𝕱𝖆𝖊 / 𝕰𝖑𝖋 𝕷𝖔𝖗𝖊 & 𝕬𝖇𝖎𝖑𝖎𝖙𝖎𝖊𝖘🍃🍃
𝕱𝖆𝖊 𝕷𝖔𝖗𝖊 / 𝕬𝖇𝖎𝖑𝖎𝖙𝖎𝖊𝖘
Fae magic is one of the oldest and most powerful magics in supernatural world ; ivy is able to use due to her Fae blood , but because of her human blood her magic isn't nearly as strong as a pure Fae or fae / human hybrid , however the more she uses this magic the more the beast is drawn to her / makes it appearance more often
the more she uses the magic, the more her aura changes ; the presence of the beast is stronger and alongside smelling of it ( ancient blood & rage ) as well as her natural scent ( grass / dirt after it rains ) , the more she begins to smell of ancient magic and her aura becomes more cloudy
Ivy is able to use glamour , however does not use it this for its intended purpose ; whilst in the FBI she makes clear photos of supes appear blurry or ruined, and will often make herself ( and whoever is hunting / investigating with her ) appear more threatening to scare off any potential attacks
due to the magic abilities of Fae blood, there are supernaturals who do kill Fae purely because it can be used in a lot of spells/magic work - does smell particularly good to cannibalistic and blood drinkers because of this but it does not send them into a craze. Ivy does smell better than the casual human being because of this, but not nearly as good as pure Fae
Ivy can be around iron a lot longer than a pure Fae however if she were to be stabbed with iron , she'd have a max of 6 hours to live before it completely poisoned her .
As mentioned in this post , Fae are related to a lot of things , but additionally are related to ( if not proceedings to ) banshees , vampires and witches
To Fae bites from supernaturals aren't fatal, and they don't change the Fae so the Fae will remain as they are
𝕰𝖑𝖋 𝕷𝖔𝖗𝖊 / 𝕬𝖇𝖎𝖑𝖎𝖙𝖎𝖊𝖘
Considered one of the most beautiful creatures in the supernatural world , alongside succubi / incubi and sirens / mermaids , to the point that when they first began interacting with humans they had to glamour themselves for protection
Elf magic is very similar to Fae magic , however whilst Fae magic is based more on ability to change the universe's happenings , elf magic is more elemental based ; again , ivy does learn this magic when in the Fae / elf realm and does use it when she needs , but feels less comfortable using it as she feels it's effect is much more physical
Unlike Fae blood elf blood doesn't hold any magic properties and doesn't smell any different
Elves are closely related to satyrs and dryads
Elves can be immortal, as shown in the LOTR universe they can choose to be mortal; as uvy had both human and Fae blood alongside her elf blood she is mortal, however does not physically age at the same speeds as human children
Because if how close to nature elves are they are able to communicate with all forms of nature , from plants to animals to even wind
Like Fae , elves can't be turned into anything else & sustaining bites from other supes isn't fatal

an issue i have with movies
or, rather, that the movie industry has and im calling them out on it that the movie industry makes stupid assumptions about what does or does not work while ignoring the real reasons why a movie succeeds or fails because that would take too much effort and thought despite ‘filmography’ being a legitimate course of study that i would really hope that people paid tens of millions of dollars to make movies have some understanding of and/or hire people with the relevant degrees because i KNOW when a movie like ‘midway’ flops hard  the reaction of the movie industry is ‘i guess people dont like historical war recreation dramas’ instead of looking a bit harder and realizing ‘i guess people dont like a movie with no main characters, nothing to tie the existing cardboard cutout characters together beyond a vague setting, and a strange inability to make anything its showing on screen relevant as a plot rather then just listing things that happened with no explanation, narrative, or point of reference character’..... although im okay with ‘WW2 movies’ being put back into dormancy because theres more then enough of those and they have kind of messed up how every other war movie made after saving private ryan functions ive seen this time and time again that a movie that is badly made flops because its badly made, and the film industry then acts like some other element is why people avoided it its kind of crazy to think now but before LOTR came out the film industry had considered fantasy movies to be toxic for years, despite the 80s and 90s having some very well loved fantasy movies like ‘willow’, ‘neverending story’, and ‘labyrinth’ because of the number of really shit fantasy movies produced in that time. or if not shit then at least movies that didnt do well until much later when people started enjoying it for different reasons like ‘legend’.... but the sheer number of fantasy movies at the time that were given mediocre budget, garbage writing, and the only saving graces were how much effort the lead actors tried to give their inarticulate screams as the stabbening commenced made the industry think ‘i guess people dont like fantasy movies’ instead of ‘i guess people are not impressed by corny stories with no setup and are ultimately destined to be reviewed by drunk youtubers who heckle B-movies’. yall remember ‘deathstalker’? cause there were like 40 of that movie, conan was a rare gem in a sea of halfassery and then AFTER lord of the rings they try a fit of fantasy movies trying to cash in on this ‘hip new trend’ and while a few of them are okay, most of them are pretty blatantly trying to copy what LOTR did by the numbers as shamelessly as possible, then theres also quite a few that limply flop over the line of mediocrity until movies like ‘your highness’ where the drunk prince wears a minotaur wang around his neck as a battle trophy and ignores sexual molestation by a wizard (ah yes, great comedy recounting those times a wizard touched you when you were a young boy, hilarious for the whole family) ultimately bring people back to square 1 instead of asking ‘maybe if we made a -good- fantasy movie again instead of throwing larger piles of money at bad ones’ and so have movie genres been thrown under the bus for the failings of individual film studios making openly shitty decisions instead of acnowleging that a movie lives or dies on if its GOOD rather then by ‘i guess people dont like full costume period movies anymore’ and its the death of so much potential on the example of costume period movies you may have heard Lindsay Ellis talk about pirates of the carribean on this exact kind of concept, if you hadnt i will gladly add a link to her video on it upon request, but the point is that the assumption at the time was ‘people dont like pirate movies anymore’ because of the dearth of mediocre low budget and shit writing pirate movies made in the 60s-80s, and building on that people kept assuming that what we today would consider the ‘interesting bits’ about pirates of the carribean such as the zombies and jack being a loon the filmmakers at the time were considering ‘ruining the movie’. now i have many complaints about the pirates of the carribean franchise but the first movie is a cinematic classic that fully stands on its own merits, yet i would have been bored to tears trying to watch the version that would have been made if the cut out the zombies, curses, crazy people, and.... really what would be left of that movie? and yet still it happens time and again like clockwork when a robin hood movie is made once a decade, its either only alright or a complete flop, and then nobody wants to make that movie again for eight years then they make another robin hood movie copy/paste that last paragraph but replace ‘robin hood’ with ‘king arthur’ because holy damn are there a lot of bad robin hood/king arthur movies out there. granted theyre public domain so nothing to stop them but when will people learn? literally only two king arthur movies were unanimously good and one of those was monty python and the other was a disney animated classic. literally only three robin hood movies were any good and again one was a disney animated classic and one of the others was Mel Brooks making fun of the Kevin Costner one if public domain was the key element there then you would expect them to keep pumping out..... oh yeah, i forgot the movie where the frankensteins monster does parkour in modern cities to kill gargoyles was a thing, and the beauty and the beast remake where ‘the beast’ is a rich kid in suburban america who is ripped but bald and covered in tattoos and theres some shit about prom.... uuuuuuuugh, theres actually a lot of these ‘reimaginings’ that while the idea of reimagining a timeless classic is cool, they ultimately handle like a steaming turd and then, again, claim its that it failed not because they made a moist cowpat but rather it failed because nobody today likes the frankenstein monster- i for one would argue that an audience today would LOVE a faithful reimagining of frankenstein that really digs into the meat of that premise instead of making him a large green zombie that goes ‘fire bad’ and lets people get dug into the byronic shenanigans of that time im losing my train of thought but moral of the story is that people who make movies will always blame them failing on the -type- of movie it is rather then that they made a bad movie or draged something on way longer then it should be (just because one well written gritty retelling of batman did well does not mean every superhero movie must be dark and gritty without the well written, just because some of the marvel movies put the ‘fun’ back into comic movies doesnt mean we need 34 of them) blegh, i should have used visual aids for this but its too late to figure out what to use now discussion encouraged

Fair enough on both counts. Prefer Kirk personally. I actually am like, sorta not a fan, but am? I can watch some of the shows, and get into to them maybe, I’ll read the fanfics, but my family has tried to make me watch all of it and that’s how you make me hate a series. So I’m in this weird place. Aliens are actually a plus for me but I also think that stuff is cool. (If you like practical affects, check out the show Face Off)
And a different anon: If you love practical affects I highly recommend watching the show Face Off
The majority of the problem is that I don't really love reality TV nor do I care so much about the making of the practical effects, but I do love seeing the finished product and strongly feel that movies and shows should use practical whenever possible and thus when they do have to render something entirely in CG they have a larger amount of money they can put towards it looking good rather than forcing actors to talk to tennis balls in a giant green room. Many of the movies and shows I really love have practical effects and not only does it feel more real to me, but also when the odd CG creature does show up often times it's more believable because they were able to pour most of the CG budget into said creature.
Looking at you, cave troll and balrog in Moria or even the fell beasts of the Nazgul, as compared to the janky-ass elves and orcs and goblins and fucking Dain and Azog themselves in the Hobbit movies. Overreliance on CG spreads your budget super thin especially when you've gotta animate an undertaking like a gigantic dragon that is a major plot point for why this story is being told. It would have been way better for the Hobbit movies to have taken a page out of LOTR's books and have practical effects for everything except what needs it, such as the trolls and the wargs and the eagles etc.
So of course I'm always going to point to LOTR's reliance on well made, hand-crafted practical effects to ground us in the story so that when we do have CG there's more of an ability to make it feel real. I think the bits of CG I liked in the Hobbit were the sequences with Smaug, because that's what they blew most of their CG budget on and it definitely shows, and believe it or not the sequence with "the necromancer" revealing himself to be Sauron, which I also felt was really well done. But why did we have to completely animate characters that could have been physically within the world, such as Dain and Azog and Bolg? We apparently did have a practical Bolg and he even appeared very briefly in Dol Guldur (he pulls Gandalf's cage down) so why was he swapped with a CG version if they went through all that effort to make a practical version? I just don't get it.
