No More Limp Greens! How to Make Your Produce Last Longer
APRIL 30, 2019
Words ByLAURA JEHA
Tips and tricks to extend the life of your fruits and veg.
Two main factors affect how long your produce lasts once you get it home from the store: temperature and moisture. But not all produce is created equal. What works for tomatoes, for example, doesn’t work for oranges. Extending the life of all your fruits and veggies is easy if you follow a few helpful tips.
What to store in the fridge
That fruit bowl on the counter might look nice, but it’s not the best way to store most produce, says Dan Tukendorf, program manager at the Ontario Fruit & Vegetable Growers’ Association. Foods that continue to ripen after they’ve been picked, like blueberries and some stone fruits (think peaches and plums), will last longer if they’re kept in the fridge. Plus, the cool temperature helps prevent growth of bacteria.
Fruit: Ditch the bowl for a bag
Keep fruit in the fridge in a perforated bag, which will help retain moisture. Citrus fruits, like oranges, lemons and limes, can last up to two weeks longer when stored this way, in comparison to sitting at room temperature. And don’t wash more delicate fruit like raspberries and blackberries under a running tap — they may turn mushy. Instead, place the berries in a colander and dip them in a bowl of cold water right before serving.
Veggies & Greens: Outta sight, outta mind
Vegetables are better off in the crisper drawer, where the cooler air helps prevent bacterial growth. To make greens like lettuce, chard and collards stay fresh longer, separate the leaves, wrap them in damp paper towel and place them in a large zip-top bag (wash before using, as usual). The process only takes a few minutes — a small price to pay for never being faced with limp greens again.
Herbs: Think flower power
For softer, leafier herbs like parsley, cilantro and mint, Tukendorf recommends “treating them like cut flowers.” Trim the ends, stand the herbs in a jar with some water and store in the fridge. The same method also works well for asparagus and celery stalks.
What to store in the freezer
You can freeze almost any vegetable by following these easy steps: Boil the veg for one to two minutes, drain and immediately submerge in ice water to halt the cooking process. This method is called blanching, which helps preserve the flavour, colour and texture of the vegetables. Cooking length varies depending on the vegetable; check out this guide for specific blanching times.
Try it with zucchini: Slice zucchini into rounds before blanching and freeze on a baking sheet before storing in resealable, freezer-proof bags.
Try it with asparagus: Asparagus’s shelf life is short. Blanch, drain well and pat dry with paper towels before putting in a freezer bag, Tukendorf says, to prevent any ice crystals from forming on the stalks.
Try it with fruit: Berries, peaches and cherries keep well in the freezer, but it’s a two-step process. First, spread the berries or sliced pitted fruit on a baking sheet, and place in the freezer until frozen. Then package in freezer-safe bags. This prevents the fruit from clumping together and forming ice crystals. Use the frozen pieces for smoothies or baking, whenever the mood strikes.
What to store on the counter
There are a few exceptions to the “no bowl” rule. Tomatoes will lose texture and flavour in the fridge — their delicate skin and flesh breaks down when exposed to cold temperatures, making them mealy. They’ll last for up to a week on the countertop.
Store onions and potatoes in a dark, dry and cool place with good air circulation, like a kitchen cupboard or cellar.
The same goes for heads of garlic. The fridge will zap it of its flavour — a kitchen crime if we’ve ever heard one.

1. Elite Daily Search Elite Daily... RACHEL MURRAY/GETTY IMAGES ENTERTAINMENT/GETTY IMAGES Jessica Biel's Quotes About Having Sex Are Honestly So Relatable BYLAURA RIZZO FEB 7 2018 Let's talk about sex, baby. According to Jessica Biel, people should talk about it open and honestly. The actress' latest endeavor, Tryst Network, with the founding CEO of WCG and CEO of Evofem Biosciences, Saundra Pelletier, is opening up the conversation about sexual health. Jessica Biel's quotes about sex are honestly so relatable... and educational. Biel opened up about her sex life and her new organization during The 2018 MAKERS Conference. Tryst is a "sex positive" resource for women to easily find reliable information. However, Biel was quick to include the fact that men are also encouraged to join the conversation by adding, Men - we need you, we want you, and we know you never got an opportunity to learn. We’re going to tell you all about periods. It’s going to be good. According to Biel, it's important for you to be informed about your body and sex, but it's also crucial for your partner to be in the know, as well. According to the Tryst website, their mission is to "improve the sexual health IQ of women and their partners through fun, reliable and empowering online content." Biel explained that it was her personal experience that led her to Tryst. She realized her own gap in knowledge when starting a family. All the information about ovulation, cycles, and everything in-between got to be very overwhelming. In her words, When I was thinking about starting a family, obviously I know how to do it. But I didn’t quite know how to do it. Rachel Murray/Getty Images Entertainment/Getty Images One of the goals of Tryst is to change the conversation about sex — get it out of the basement and into broad daylight. The website says, We believe sex is natural, healthy, and fun — with or without a partner. We also believe it’s totally cool if you’re not having sex. The problem: Our culture often treats sex as something bad or shameful. And we don’t talk enough about the stuff we actually need to know about our bodies, our pleasure and our partners. Humor is a strong tool that the organization is using to promote their message and pass along information. In the video below, Chelsea Handler guest stars alongside Biel to de-stigmatize sexual health if a fun and conversational way. Tryst Network on YouTube Handler walks in on Biel checking herself out in the mirror, and Biel asks if that's weird to do. Handler confidently responds, "No! You have to check in with your vagina. How else are you going to know what's going on down there?" Valid point. When asked about how to understand our bodies better at the MAKERS Conference, Biel said, "Get a hand mirror and take a look." WCG Cares on YouTube Biel is doing her part to stop the spread of misinformation about sex which will hopefully result in "no more missed orgasms." One of Tryst's strongest missions is to get reliable information out into the world. The website explains, With a judgement-free community and curated network of reliable resources, Tryst is dedicated to empowering you to make healthy, informed choices. From the newest science on sex to below-the-belt health questions, revealing first-person stories, and discussions about critical issues like consent and equality — no topic will be TMI or too taboo. Since sex was the topic of conversation — of course, the question, "What's the best sexual advice that both of you have ever been given?" came up. Pelletier encouraged listeners that sex "doesn't have to be a burden," and it "doesn't just have to be the woman's responsibility." Basically, do what feels good and pleasurable — if it doesn't, feel empowered to ask why and make changes. Really solid advice. Biel chimed in to add, "Don’t do it in the ocean, ever. It’s not good... salty." Also, sound words to live by. Sexual health is important, and we should be able to talk about it openly. Hopefully, Tryst will start the conversation and keep it going. Because she is a working mum too, just doesn't get paid. And she never gets a break... No time for toilet breaks or eating unattended. So please just stop. rebeccaazzi I never get involved in posting comments on celebs' statuses because most of the time the comments are nonsense. But I have to step in as a fellow mom. Those saying @jessicabiel isn't a working mom just because she has help... Really?? So you're telling me you have no help in your day to day lives as a mom? You have no parents, friends or family who help you out? We all need a little help to survive and it truly takes a village. You have no clue how much hello she has or doesn't have and it really shouldn't matter. We moms have got to stick together, not tear each other down in a contest of "who has the hardest life." Come on. This woman is a real person you know. Money does not mean that it's not still exhausting to raise a toddler. You don't even know her life or situation either. How about we build each other and stop stressing so much judgment? I'd think especially fellow moms would extend that to another mom. thepsychologyofbusiness 👏 filesofmiles Stunning ♥️🌷 follow me ☀️🌴🌴 kmish12 You are my hero kmish12 Love this post malpas1313 Thank you for posting this and making it OK for the rest of us working moms to own #momlife cali_girl_fit A creature I am all too familiar with! allaboutdogobedience Get your cat naps in where you can girl! Embrace that you have tons of help , money, maids etc. be proud of it and enjoy it! @rebeccaazzi not everyone has that village your talking about. Like me, zero. No help. It's all me and my husband. Zero outside family. It really does take a village so it's awful when you don't have it. Anyway, I have nothing against celebs and their money and ability to have all these extra luxuries but it does annoy me that they try to act like they don't have that and they are struggling. 10 years: A decade of design connections
We thought design was about pretty colors. And awesome fonts. And clever logos.
Boy, we were wrong. Looking back at the last 10 years, we’ve realized that it’s actually about people and how they relate, collaborate and support each other.
Tumblr media
Turns out, design is all about connection. Here are 10 incredible ways we’ve seen design connect people from all over the world.
1
Design connects us to the one who finally “gets it”
Is it mind reading? Maybe. We don’t know how they do it, but the perfect designer has the power to turn creative chaos into pure genius.
Find your own perfect designer
 Design by :: scott ::
We knew we’d need ongoing design support…
and when working with Scott he seemed to know exactly what I meant –and then he’d create something even better. That’s when we realized we were going to use him for everything.”
Our Pro team matched 2920 Sleep with :: scott :: who became their go-to designer for everything from postcards to web pages for their mattress startup.

MY REVIEW OF ” GHOST GIFTS’ by  LAURA SPINELLA
OMG!  KUDOS to author Laura Spinella “Ghosts Gifts” for her breathtaking, awe-inspiring  descriptive novel. I loved everything about this book! The genres of this story are Para-normal, Mystery, Thriller and Suspense, and Fiction.  I could easily see this story adapted as a screenplay for a movie or TV series.  There are twists and turns, suspense, some chilling moments where the hairs on my neck were standing up. How would you feel if you had the ability to converse with dead spirits that were reaching out to you? You were the only one that could provide closure to their living relatives. You were the only one that could feel the anguish, anger and the evil of some spirits? Could you realize what problems this “gift’ could cause in your life?
The author describes her characters as complex and complicated. Aubrey Ellis writes for a local newspaper about houses in the community for sale. Aubrey has inherited the familial psychic ability to communicate with spirits of dead people. The spirits usually appear to her, and there are certain smells, and sounds that trigger Aubrey making her aware of this.  Her grandmother Charlie has been Aubrey’s family, and has dreams about things. Aubrey’s deceased father had the same ability as Aubrey, and had difficulty with it.  Aubrey doesn’t advertise her gift and keeps it to herself.  Aubrey kept this a secret from her husband Owen, who had problems dealing with this when he found out.  Aubrey’s talent can be extremely dangerous to her.
Aubrey has been very happy writing about homes for sale in the community. Suddenly an opportunity presents itself where the editor of her newspaper wants her involved  in a murder mystery, that goes back twenty years. The last thing Aubrey wants to do is deal with a murder because of her special ability. In addition, the parent company of the newspaper brings in special help to write about this. Aubrey is to partner with an investigative reporter Levi St. John.
The story takes place in the present and past when it is relevant to Aubrey and other characters. I was totally mesmerized and captivated by this intense story. Laura Spinella is an amazing story-teller. I was dead wrong in who I thought the killer of the murdered victim was, and I tried to follow all the clues. There are secrets and betrayals in this mystery. I highly recommend this intriguing story for readers who enjoy novels about para-normal events, mystery, and suspense. I received a copy of this novel for my honest review. BE WARNED: This is a novel that you can’t put down!! Happy Reading!
