I don’t think anyone has the finger on the pulse of modern comics better than C. Spike Trotman.

Dream Daddy: A Dad Dating Comic Book edited by Ari Yarwood
Did you know that @dreamdaddygame has comics? You can check them out at @onipress.
Video games are not my gaming forte, but “Dream Daddy: A Dad Dating Simulator” had my attention from the moment it came out. I did want to be a dad dating other dads and a friend even gifted me “Dream Daddy: Dadrector’s Cut.” Unfortunately, I did not have any way to play it at the time. I’m one of those people who has to be forced at gunpoint to update their computer OS, so it wasn’t until I…

🌏 Tamamo the Fox Maiden and Other Asian Stories: A Cautionary Fables and Fairytales Book edited by Kel McDonald, C. Spike Trotman, and Kate Ashwin
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
A graphic novel collection of several fables and fairytales from Asian countries, including some famous and some lesser-known, while also including an array of countries!
When I got this book I was worried it’d only feature stories from Japan and China, but I was pleasantly surprised to find stories from Laos, Georgia, Iraq, and many others! Each story features an artist who has great talent in art and storytelling.
My favorite stories were “The Demon with Matted Hair” from India, “Urashima Taro” from Japan, and “The History of the Spectre Ship” from Iraq.
I highly recommend!

Delver by Tish Doolin, M.K. Reed, and C. Spike Trotman
Definitely one for the D&D nerds amongst us. There is a dungeon that moves. The entrance changes location at random. Wherever it appears, adventurers, traders, and general industry travels in its wake. A door appears in the village of Oddgoat and suddenly they’re swarmed by Delvers, those who make their living bringing up treasure from the dungeon.
This story follows Temerity, a girl from Oddgoat. Dungeon and the magic and delvers that follow it have completely upended her way of life. The magic rippling out from dungeon has destroyed her future, burnt down the groves of trees and transformed the goats into monsters. She decides to try delving. What else is there for her? But the dungeon is a dangerous place for the unprepared, and Temerity is very unprepared.
I liked it! The art and lettering was good and easy to follow. And I liked that it explored the effects such a place would have on a small community.

She is fashion. She is drama. She insists that wine counts as a fruit. And she's dead as a freakin' doornail!
She is WINE GHOST. Say hi!
Tumblr media
...Sooo.
Y'know that girl you saw on Tinder? The one that made you audibly say, “wow,” and “yikes,” before you swiped left?
Well, she’s dead.
She died.
And Wine Ghost Goes to Hell is about what happened after she became her hometown's, shall we say, cautionary tale.
When Wine Ghost was alive, she was a booze-soaked train wreck. And now that she’s dead . . . well, to be honest, not a lot has changed. But when an old friend from her days among the living turns up in Hell unexpectedly, she's faced with a lot more responsibility—and self-reflection—than she's used to dealing with! Fortunately, if anyone knows how to handle life after death, it's Wine Ghost.
She learned the ins-and-outs of Hell a long time ago, but it's her pal's first days down in The Depths. And boy howdy, are they both in for a wild ride!
———
Iron Circus is printing some great and wild indie comics and graphic novels. This one by Sage Coffey still needs some help to get off the ground! Check out the pledge levels and rewards on Backerkit.

Dream Daddy: a Dad Dating Comic Book by Various Writers
Tumblr media
This is NOT a serious review!
SPOILER WARNING
This is something I read a little while ago and thought I should cover it given it hasn't been too long since reading it. I also haven't played the game but as soon as my PC is fixed I very much plan on doing so.
Dream Daddy: a Dad Dating Comic Book is a collection of stories featuring the dads from Dream Daddy from various writers and artists. The list of stories included are:
Much Abird About Nothing - Wendy Xu
Let the Right Dad In - Lee C.A.
Dream Ad-y - Vernon Shaw and Leighton Gray
Fair Deal - C. Spike Trotman
Dungeons & Daddies - Josh Trujillo
Unfortunately we don't get a focus on each individual "daddy" but with each story we do get to see multiple or all of the dads, and I feel the focus is divided enough that each dad gets a decent amount of attention. My personal favourite story is probably Let the Right Dad In which focusses on how Robert and Damien meet, along with how Robert gets Betsy. I personally think it was very funny, because Robert genuinely believes Damien is a vampire and starts a murder plot against him, which comes to a head when he storms into the vets wielding a wooden stake.
My least favourite would sadly have to be Dream Ad-y. While it wasn't bad, I just wasn't engaged with the plot of creating an ad for Mat's coffee shop. Again, it wasn't bad, but not my favourite either.
I also like how there's two different interpretations of the player dad, found in Much Abird About Nothing and Dream Ad-y. It's nice to see how different writers and artists see the player dad given he is a customisable character in-game. In the first appearance of the player dad, he ends up partnering with Craig which I think from memory was popular due to Craig and the player dad having a history together, and I'm a fan of that too.
Overall it was a neat collection of stories and if you like Dream Daddy or just dads in general, as well as comedic comics then I'd say I'd recommend it.

Goddess acknowledgments day #2: Comics
Biggest comics inspiration for The Goddess of Drought is Annie Mok, whose comics are incredible at illustrating trauma and its echoes. I come back to Body Language, Shadow Manifesto, and especially Swim Thru Fire (illustrated by Sophia Foster-Dimino) again and again. She depicts characters with kindness even as they go through unkind times in a way that I aspire to. I'm really looking forward to her memoirs, to be illustrated by Carta Monir. Other snippets: Noelle Stevenson's diary comic, about how society can reward traumatic weight loss and forced femininity. G. E. Gogarty's "Times I Made My Ex-Bf Cry" (pts 1 & 2) covers similar topics to The Goddess of Drought in a nearly opposite (= super funny) tone. I think about the careful vignettes and twisty narrative of Whit Taylor's Ghost a lot. Along with Annie Mok, Wendy Xu, Yumi Sakugawa, Aatmaja Pandya, and MariNaomi are inspirational Asian-American women in comics. I wouldn't have found many of these cartoonists without the We Should Be Friends podcast, so thank you. I also would not have known how to layout or print my comic without the sage advice in the Dirty Old Ladies podcast -- C. Spike Trotman's writing and Amanda Lafrenais's gorgeous screentones were a constant inspiration. Lastly, Scott Pilgrim by Bryan O'Malley and Octopus Pie by Meredith Gran (which just ended after a decade!) have been storytelling touchstones for me since I started making comics. Thank you.
