One wrapped with silver paper and a blue bow: "To Lara"; a tiger mug and a family-size box of Jaffa Cakes, complete with hot chocolate powder and mini marshmallows. Another wrapped in blue with a silver bow: "To Jonah"; a set of colorful kitchen knives, decorated with landscape pictures along the blade, and a box of traditional haupia, sourced with some difficulty. "Merry Yueltide," each note reads.

Lara opens hers curiously, treating the wrapping paper more like a puzzle to be solved rather than a present. She smiles at the mug and Jaffa cakes. She really is predictable but these will be used on late-night research binges. Or when she’s craving a snack.

Jonah has plenty of knives but he appreciates the gifts all the same. Despite how many he has, there always seem to be a lack when he’s cooking. It’s also been a while since he had haupia. It’s certainly not something he expected to get as a gift.

♔—- “No. Jonah is Lara’s best friend,” Loki answered without a moment’s hesitation. “My best friend is a man named Fródi. I grew up with him. He was there for me my entire life. He filled a very important position in my life and I could never replace him.

     “But the relationship that Jonah and I have is a bit deeper than friendship, I think. At first, it was an awkward transition. He knew me as his professor. To suddenly be reintroduced to me as Lara’s boyfriend-turned-husband… It was bizarre at first. I wasn’t sure how to interact with Jonah. All I knew about him was what I saw of him when he was my student and that he was Lara’s best friend. Jonah was protective and I had to show him that I could be trusted with Lara, that I loved her, and that I would treat her well.

     “Once he realized how devoted I was to Lara and her happiness, our dynamic changed completely. We developed a friendship, of course, but it went so much further than that. Jonah became my brother in the blink of an eye and he’s just like what I always wanted out of a brother. Even though Jonah is far younger than me, he’s protective, he takes care of me, and he helps me with anything and everything I need. He’s what I always wanted from Thor but never wholeheartedly got. With Jonah, it doesn’t matter that we’re not related, that we’re from different cultures, from different planets… It feels like I’ve known Jonah my whole life and it feels like he’s my brother in blood and bond.”

♔—- “Of course I do. Jonah is one of my best friends. He’s one of the most important people in Lara’s life, and he’s become like family to us and our children. When he dies, it will be… particularly difficult on all of us. The only thing that I could imagine that would be more devastating to me and my family is if something happened to Lara. I spent a long, long time trying to convince her to eat one of the Golden Apples, to extend her life so she could keep living with me and our children. 

     “I think Lara is still trying to accept the realization that she will live longer than an average human and it’s been a hard decision for her. I… actually want to extend the same offer to Jonah, but I’m not sure he’ll accept. I want to talk to him about it, but I need to figure out how to bring it up to him. I don’t want a repeat of what happened with Lara. That was probably one of the worst disagreements we’ve ever had.”

Even when I was his professor and didn’t have a personal relationship with him beyond grading his work, I could see what a kind-hearted individual he truly was. He had enough resilience to put up with Lara-fucking-Croft, after all. He’s… honestly almost like a motherly figure. Even to Lara and I. He so often fusses over us to make sure we’re all right and that we’re healthy and as stress-free as possible. He’s even twice as doting over our children. In all honesty, Jonah would make a great father. I wonder if he’ll ever settle down with someone? Or is he too busy gushing over Lara and our family? Sometimes, I do feel particularly bad for leaving him with the children all the time. They, no doubt, try to take advantage of him. Always.’
