The other week, I got the itch to make a radio-themed playlist. I wrote down all the songs I could think of that would fit the theme, and then decided to crowdsource further suggestions via Facebook. After adding everyone else’s suggestions to my own, I began compiling the playlist. The original version had 80+ songs on it. I narrowed it down first by getting rid of artist repeats (there were several bands/artists who had several songs that fit the theme; I narrowed it down to one from each), then by getting rid of other songs which just didn’t flow well with the rest. (Not because I didn’t like them, necessarily, just cuz they didn’t fit well in the final playlist.)

BOOK REVIEW: WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE C86 KIDS? An Indie Odyssey by NIGE TASSELL (2022)

C30, C60, C90 Go! The world’s first ever cassette-only single release by Bow Wow Wow in 1980. Nige Tassell stays with the theme of cassette pets in his brand-new book. Back in 1986, the NME issued C86, a tape of current indie artists and this is therefore Tassell’s tale of the tape.

Twenty-two tracks and artists that had to be tracked down - for Nige’s research purposes - to give their stories behind the songs and relaying what they did next.

There’s a great chapter on FUZZBOX, who were proud to be cover stars of both an “inky”, the NME and a “glossy”, Smash Hits. They acknowledge that they stood apart from the rest of the cassette, being rawer, more of the punk DIY ethos than the others - even down to their homemade clothes. For those were Fuzzbox’s own rules & relegations (uniforms).

C86 is being very well received with positive quotes from pop Einstein's a-go go. For example, one from magazine editor, journalist, broadcaster Mark Ellen, an NME scribe who together with David Hepworth in 1983 launched Just Seventeen, a new teen mag which was different for girls: “A valuable slice of pop history”. 

In 1986, the author of WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE C86 KIDS? was...well, just seventeen.

After C86, it then was a case of follow-up indie / shoe-gazing movements, a case of C87, C88, C89 Go!

本日はAdam And The Antsからの繋がりで、同じく英国Bow Wow Wowをご紹介していきます。

Bow Wow Wow(バウ・ワウ・ワウ)とは、ポストパンクの旗手Adam & The Antsからマネージャーのマルコム・マクラーレンがリーダーアダム・アントを除くメンバーをすべて引き抜いてロンドンで結成されてバンド。ボーカルはクリーニング屋で働きながら歌を口ずさんでいるところをスカウトされた14歳のビルマ系女性アナベラ・ルーウィン。

1980年にシングル「C·30 C·60 C·90 Go」とミニアルバム『Your Cassette Pet』でデビュー。レコードを作らずカセットテープのみで発表された。レコードはもう古い、電車の中でも街を歩きながらでも車でも聴けるカセットの時代が来ると主張したが、後にレコードでも発表された。

1981年にアルバム『ジャングルでファン・ファン・ファン』をリリース。ジャケット（エドゥアール・マネの絵画「草上の昼食」のパロディー)のアナベラ（当時15歳）の裸写真を見た彼女の母親が問題として提訴、発売延期にまで至ったことも。凄腕のテクニックでジャングル・ビートと呼ばれる斬新な音楽スタイルでイギリスのみならず、日本でも人気が出て、資生堂のCMにも登場した。(90年代のジャングルとは別物です。)

1982年には来日しマッドネスとジョイントコンサート・ツアーを行った。1983年に一旦、解散しているが、現在も細長く活動中。

Vo.のスカウトだってクリーニング屋で口ずさんでいた子がこんなポテンシャル持ってるなんて。そして僕は通ってきませんでしたが、Bow Wow Wowの音を聞くと何というか新鮮。音に古さを全く感じさせないというか、ジャングルビートとアフロ・キューバン・ジャズとトライバル感を取り入れたサウンドって、時代の半歩先をいってたんじゃなかろうか。MIXのパンの振り方も何とも洒脱で、マルコムのプロデュース力・審美眼に本当に脱帽。今でいうと誰なんだろう。これは80年代当時の人からしたら相当衝撃だったろうなぁ。
