Khi lần đầu tiên được sản xuất rộng rãi vào những năm 1920, công dụng chính của trichloroetylen là chiết xuất dầu thực vật từ các nguyên liệu thực vật như đậu nành, dừa và cọ. Các ứng dụng khác trong ngành công nghiệp thực phẩm bao gồm khử caffein cà phê và điều chế chiết xuất hương liệu từ hoa bia và gia vị.
