i just had to say this.

no, but, i really want y’all to say it with your whole chest. why is it cool for straight people to reminisce about their childhood crush and dream of what could have been and that's romantic, and you can gain sympathy. but if you make it queer then we’re weird, creepers with some agenda? you just always want to demonize us and push us into the box of pedophiles, go ahead, just say it say it!

despite almost every straight presenting, straight agenda pusher, closest case out there, in and out of the church being usually the pedophiles of the world. it’s almost.. ironic.. it’s almost like... gaslighting or something. like you’re calling us what y’all are. 

(listen, most actual queer/gay people tend to actually never experience childhood and teen years normal development because we are so afraid of so much, and for good reason. so yeah, we also like to reminisce like y’all.. only we have even more layers there.. you can’t imagine the depth of all the things we are trying to work through in doing so. often times alone with no other help with these aspects.

so, “missed opportunities”, an understatement for us. i mean these ships for us are all the life we’ll never get to get back, time lost feels so heartbreakingly different in the closet. “years wasted”, again, an understatement. so, y’all think we’re silly for caring so much about ships when we can see ourselves in these ships but i cry thinking about how much i can relate to so much and it brings me back there. but instead of repressing all of those feelings and looping those memories i can never undo or change, i attempt to, through fanfic. i write and read fanfic, and love fanart because it’s my do over. not to mention, we never get actual representation that’s fleshed out the same way. i know plenty can relate so i just had to vent this since pride is here and i’ve been an absolute emotional wreck over so much and this has been weighing on me.)

I think people aren’t fully listening to me in regards to 5604. First off, don’t call asks about queer people speaking about the history of fandom—which is inherently queer history—bait. Rude.

White cishets writing stories isn’t inherently fandom. Fandom started when POC/queer creators joined, because without creativity and insight to how marginalized groups are treated, it was just white cishets writing stereotypes and fetishizing minority groups. People writing gay Star Trek fanfiction was likely filled with bigotry and stereotypes about gay men. It wasn’t until queer people and POC took the little stereotype story club and turned it into something better.

Marginalized people being allowed into fandom is still a new concept, which is why you can find “how to write POC characters” “how to write queer characters” posts everywhere, proving that marginalized fans haven’t been allowed in fandom for very long!! Marginalized people also are behind proshipping. Anything not straight or stereotypical of oppressed groups was looked down upon—that’s where antis got their start, by hating anything that wasn’t straight and white!! Proshipping was a way to acknowledge that all ships are valid, including ones that aren’t full of harmful stereotypes written by white cishets.

Another thing is that fandom is fictional. Showing “hatred” for straight white cishet characters is a way for the oppressed to vent about their experiences with oppression in a way where they won’t get violently hurt for it. Fandom is a tool to help those who are victims to the power imbalance in the country—pointing out that ships portraying a dynamic where men are superior to women (straight ships) aren’t that great isn’t some type of bigotry or hatred. It’s queer teens being frustrated that their one escape from the world is dominated by the sexism and misogyny of heterosexual relationships.

If fandom was started by straight white women, why is it supposedly so “hateful to m/f ships” in the first place? It’s because the “hatred” is a psychological tool to help people feel more at peace in a world that wasn’t made for them.

I thought this was a place for like-minded queer individuals to discuss their experiences with the gift of fandom, but now it’s full of either bootlickers with internalized prejudices about themselves, or just straight whites. I will be telling my friends to unfollow as well. You’ve disappointed me greatly today, all of you.

so there's been a lot of posting about things like ofmd not being a 'kind show' and no longer being 'the queer joy show' etc etc and. i just want to remind us of where everybody is in s1's finale vs s2's

let us begin

stede: stede ends s1 on a hopeful note (setting off to go get his man) but shortly prior to that he's kind of been through it (he nearly got executed and then two different people tried to murder him). stede ends s2 on an even more hopeful note, having got his man, ready to open an inn with him. verdict: slightly better off at the end of s2

ed: ed ends s1 in absolute despair. izzy has been a real dick to ed (depending on your interpretation, he's done something ranging from being a little tiny bit mean to ed to calling him a slur and threatening to kill him, but we're not having this discourse again) so now he's back in his blackbeard persona mere days after feeling some hope that he was finally free from piracy and ready to run away with someone who loves him for who he is. the last shot we see of s1 ed is him absolutely crying his eyes out in the bed nook. it inflicts d4 psychic damage on me whenever i look at it. anyway at the end of s2 he's been on an absolute journey, he's learned that he's loved, he's free from being blackbeard, he's stood beside the man that loves him and they're going to give everything a go. verdict: significantly better off at the end of s2

stede's crew: i mean. what is there to say. at the end of s1 they've just been marooned and social order on their little island is rapidly breaking down due to buttons and roach teaming up to try and eat the swede. at the end of s2 they're happily back at sea and the swede has spanish jackie to fight off anyone who would even consider having a nibble. verdict: significantly better off at the end of s2

honourable mention - buttons: ends s1 unsuccessfully trying to eat the swede. ends s2 having fulfilled his life's dream of becoming a bird. good job buttons. verdict: slightly better off at the end of s2

ed's crew: as above, the crew end s2 happily sailing away into the literal sunset. we finish s1 with jim presumably unconscious and izzy pointing a gun at frenchie. so not an ideal situation really. fang seems to be having a good time though and ivan gets killed off between seasons (rip king) so it averages out at a slightly better rather than a significantly better. verdict: slightly better off at the end of s2

honourable mention - frenchie: ends s1 hoisting his flag at gunpoint. ends s2 captaining the bloody ship. go frenchie. we love to see it. verdict: significantly better off at the end of s2

lucius: ends s1 soggy. ends s2 not only dry, but married. verdict: significantly better off at the end of s2

izzy: ah yes this old chestnut. so. two perspectives here. one is simply that he ends s1 alive and ends s2 dead. so. possible verdict: significantly worse off at the end of s2. alternatively, he ends s1 as his classic repressed self, smiling from ear to ear because ed cut his toe off and it sparked joy, disliked by the crew, resented by ed. he ends s2 having accepted himself and having experienced all the queer joy he would never have permitted himself in s1, having experienced more screentime and growth than any other secondary character in s2 (yes he's a secondary character no i won't argue with you about this), and dies exactly as he lived - being a pirate who can pull off a plan. he gets to have his deathbed deep and meaningful conversation with ed, which brings closure to them both. he gets buried beside ed and stede's new inn, on land where his grave will be tended, having been given a nice funeral by people who once despised him. so. possible verdict: slightly better off at the end of s2. he definitely seemed happier in s2, and died at peace rather than as a frothing little ball of anger, which is more than i could've foreseen in s1.

anyway. the eagle eyed mathematicians among you will notice that even if we take it as read that izzy is significantly worse off at the end of s2...

every single other character ends s2 in a better place than where they ended s1.

ofmd is a kind show that's full to the brim of queer joy. you guys are just sad that your fave died. and that's fine. the writers did a great job creating a story with characters that were so well written that people are genuinely grieving izzy's death.

but his death does not erase the inherent kindness and joy of the rest of the show.

you what the worst thing is? I’m not normally a shipper. I accept whatever I get given in canon and either like it or not. I don’t put any stock in two characters who aren’t canonically romantically connected getting together at some point. But buddie has broken me. I’m in, I’m drinking the kool-aid, the show cannot end satisfactorily without buddie happening, and I’M SO MAD. How dare they accidentally stumble their way into a profound love story like this without even meaning to. This isn’t a matter of queer baiting or fans just shipping the two pretty guys anymore. Every resolution needed by either character ties to the other. They are each others solutions and the only place they can leave them at the end. They literally can’t do anything else. man do i get this. like yeah, they could end up in relatively happy relationships with other people and like. they would be. fine.

Some musings for Pride Month 🌈:

Know how straight people are not attracted to every single person of the opposite gender and can have meaningful platonic connections with them, without any romantic or sexual intent? Likewise...

• Bisexual people are not attracted to every single person they see or breathe around. Bisexual people can have close platonic bonds with people of any gender, without it having any secret romantic or sexual intent.

• Gays/Lesbians are not attracted to every single person of their own gender. Gays/Lesbians can have close platonic bonds with people of the same gender, without it having any secret romantic or sexual intent.

So when you take a healthy platonic friendship between a canon queer character and their straight best friend (who hasn't even secretly questioned themselves about their sexuality on screen in any episode for them to be considered a closet case) and celebrate it as an example for Pride Month, as opposed to actual canon queer characters and romances, it doesn't seem cool or respectful to the LGBTQ+ community.

I'm not at all saying we should only celebrate the queers who are out and proud. Closeted queers are also very valid in their queerness and their struggles are understandable. But when you have never seen someone even start to question their preferences, I don't get how fair it is to assume and officially declare that they are queer. Guessing or wondering about someone's sexuality is fine, but declaring it on someone's behalf is not. Just like it is wrong to make heteronormative assumptions about anyone, it is also wrong to force someone out of a closet they might not even be in just because you think you know who someone is.

Let people tell their own stories, whatever they are. That is what Pride is about. Finding your true self, in your own time, on your own terms. No one else's.

Again, people can believe whatever they want, because the things we see on television are ultimately fictional. But using some fanon TV ship as an example worthy of being celebrated for Pride — a real-life event that holds so much significance for a community that has been endlessly fighting for their rights — is frankly disrespectful.

You being bereft of subtext, fueled by flagrant homophobia, and blinded by heteronormativity isn’t our problem. It’s yours. And if against all odds, we’re wrong, that’s on the writers of the show. It still wouldn’t make us delusional or foolish, and there would be nothing to mock.

That’s because there is nothing foolish or wrong about rooting for queer joy. The only thing that’s foolish is rooting against it, which you’re doing now. We have nothing to be ashamed of, and you have everything to be ashamed of.

And we will see you on the other side. And maybe, just maybe, when you’re entirely wrong in 2025 and Byler is not, in fact, bones, you’ll rethink your life and work on being a better, happier, kinder person. I pray that day comes sooner.

I'm not really a fan of MHA any more, but I find the Togaraka ship deeply compelling. In a story which was willing to center queer narratives and pay off the themes built up in the first 20 or 40% of the series, Toga and Ochaco's relationship could have been a great way to develop them.

Toga's driven by a destructive individualism. She tried conformity, but that didn't work, no matter how hard she tries. Now, with a little encouragement from Stain's video and Shigaraki's influence, she just does what she wants. And if that means the occasional murder...well, is that really worse than the people around her expecting her to kill herself to fit in?

Ochaco's beliefs could be framed as naive authoritarianism, or at least traditionalism. She wants to preserve the hero society she and her parents grew up in, a hero society which doesn't work quite so well for the Togas and Twices of the world as it does for people who own a small construction company, already straining under the weight of its contradictions despite the Symbol of Peace devoting his life to upholding it.

If the last 60-80% of the series was willing to grapple with the problems the good arcs established—quirk-based discrimination and how "Hero Society" fails to solve our real world's fundamental problems—it would recognize these perspectives as both opposed and flawed. The world Ochaco fights for would continue to crush people like Toga and her friends between its gears, but the world Toga fights for would crush a different set of people under the feet of a thousand petty tyrants.

In theory, if these two came together through some combination of external circumstances and internal desires, their conflicts could line up with the themes I've been talking about. Ochaco wants Toga to become a hero so they can be seen together in public, but Toga isn't willing to obey the necessary rules. Toga wants Ochaco to let loose, but Ochaco isn't willing to steal stuff (or even turn away and let Toga steal it).

And in resolving those conflicts, they could find a happy medium. They could develop a worldview which gives people like Toga the freedom they crave, without sacrificing peace and cooperation on its altar.

And maybe then they could actually work to do something about it? Bring together Toga's villain friends and any heroes Ochaco can convince and do...something? Or just enjoy their relatively peaceful relationship. Whatever.
