Excerpts: One of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s own official portraits is said to have been edited with the insertion of a large willow tree.

The claim prompted accusations of hypocrisy after a source close to the Sussexes criticised the Princess of Wales, insisting that Meghan would “never” make a picture editing mistake and would have been “annihilated” for releasing a doctored family portrait.

However, an image released to accompany the announcement of Meghan’s pregnancy with her daughter Princess Lilibet on Valentine’s Day 2021 appears to have been heavily doctored, amid suggestions that a large willow tree was edited into the shot.

Mr Harriman took the picture with an iPad from his home in London and it was shared with no indication that it had been digitally altered.In 2022, he was asked during an appearance on BBC Radio 3 podcast Private Passions how he had created the photograph and admitted: “It’s amazing what you can do with technology.”

The presenter asked him: “They weren’t actually under a willow tree, they were lying outside in a meadow, weren’t they, Harry and Meghan, when you took the photograph of them?”

Mr Harriman said the image was his “most famous virtual shoot” as he described how he had used technology that allowed him to communicate with the Sussexes and tell them how to pose, before he remotely “pressed the shutter button” thousands of miles away.

Scratchy black and white drawings and the ink meanderings of artist Jon Carling have always caught our eye. They’re like something out of a weird dream or out of an ancient children’s book–,and they’re always captivating. We’ve been following his prolific drawing career for a long time and recently caught up with Jon to find out more about his inspirations, his early artistic influences, and his recent dip into animating his beautiful works.

Introduce yourself?  And where you’re from or currently residing? What’s your favorite thing about the city? My name is Jon Carling. I am an independent artist living in Oakland, California. I love the landscape. The beauty of the Northern Californian coastline is a life long inspiration to me. 

How would you describe your work to someone who is just coming across it? Scratchy ink drawings, some scribbling, mostly black and white.  Weird children's book art. 

How did you first get interested in drawing or figure out that you had a knack creating awesome art? I have always really enjoyed making stuff.   Drawing is really a habit from childhood, I would  escape into my sketchbook, and my imagination, making up worlds. It is an awesome feeling to manifest ideas with some degree of success.  That feeling is what keeps me doing it after all of these years.

Who and what were some of your early artistic influences? What artists inspire you these days? Early on, I loved Saturday Morning Cartoons, After school Cartoons, Fucking Sesame Street.  All the 80s kids' stuff.  Garfield Volumes, The Far Side, and Calvin & Hobbes. 

When I was 6 or 7, a comic book store opened near my house, and that had a huge impact.  The dude who ran it, Butch, was an old hippie dude who also had a huge collection of Japanese comics and toys.This is when Voltron and Robotech had just started airing in the U. S. . It was perfect timing to be exposed to all that incredible art.Greek Myths by D'Aulaires was my first book, and basically my bible.  I think you can see the influence on my work from that book.  

These days, I have been studying animation, so, I have been admiring the classic cartoons and animation from early film, all the way up to today.  I have been reading 'Elemental Magic' by Joseph Gilland.It is a book all about traditional animation special effects.  Amazing.  

Not only do you produce a lot of drawings, but also create zines and now dabbling in animation. Tell us a little bit about how you ended up animating your drawings? Obviously, I have a love for cartoons.  Creating a cartoon of my own has been something I have dreamed of forever.  I have created short animations over the years using traditional methods: Paper and pen on a light table, scanning everything into photoshop, and putting it all together in there.  It takes forever, and it can be pretty discouraging when you are sitting there doing data entry for hours.

Recently, a friend let me try out his Ipad Pro, and I am blown away by how much better the pen interface has become.  I got excited about the possibilities for animating and started researching tablets.  And, after years of being very reluctant to using digital tools to make my work, I finally got a drawing tablet.  I ended up getting the Samsung S4 tablet instead of the Ipad Pro because I feel like the pen and the screen are better suited for me and my work. I am using it everyday, I love how fast and clean the process is, while keeping the feel of my lines.  Now I have a Huion Kamvas monitor for my computer too, I am getting the feel for the whole process, but, I am excited about what I can do now.  

As exciting as it is, pen and paper is always closest to my heart.  

What are your essential art tools and materials? I really just need a sketchbook, a pencil (Sumogrip .5) , and a pen (Pilot Hi-Tec-C 03). If I have that with me, I am quite happy.

How do your ideas take shape? How do you get from start to finish? What’s your process? I love to daydream.  I have a bunch of ongoing stories in my head that I always turn to if I want to go somewhere.Other times, I just draw without any idea or expectation.  I follow the pencil and start fleshing things out.I love phrases, sometimes out of context.  A simple phrase can be the spark for a huge idea. 

How has your style of drawing changed or evolved? What allows you to grow artistically? I don't know what is changing exactly.  The cross-over digital art is new, so, I am sure it will alter my work to some degree.I feel like I am always refining and hammering out a more perfect version of the world in my head.

What has been the most challenging project you’ve worked on? Last year, I had the opportunity to illustrate Carlo Collodi's 'Pinoccio' for an Italian publisher.It was almost 200 illustrations with a tight schedule.  It was just an epic amount of drawing, and when it was finished, I was able to travel to Italy for the release, and it just turned into a really magical experience. 

What was the hardest thing about it and the most rewarding? The discipline to complete the work, while maintaining quality that honors the book.  It was a grind for large portions of the work, but, the end result made me realize how much good comes out of genuine work applied to a dream.

What was your last adventure that showed up in one of your illustrations, thematically or just visually? Oh, it probably had something to do with a dream that involved a bird headed soldier dragging my injured body off  the battlefield. 

What advice would you give someone who wants to follow in your footsteps and pursue art? Make sure you are doing it regardless if it is your "job".  I am passionate about drawing, it is what I do, I don't see it as my career.  First and foremost, I do it for myself.

What’s your best Art School tip that you want to share with folks? By all means, enjoy yourself, and the time you have.  I would make sure you have put yourself in the direction that fits best with your specific way of creating.Art School costs so much money, I don't think a truly determined person needs to go at all.  If you love art, and the creative process, you will seek knowledge.The debt from art school can crush any hopes for a fulfilling career in the field.

What are your favorite style of VANS? I love the ComfyCush Era style and fit.  They are extremely comfortable and look super cool.I also love the traditional white slip-ons, they are the best shoe in the world to draw on.

on december 25th, in the year 1997, you made your way into the world in the midst of the coldest night ontario had faced in months. your parents, evelyn and nathaniel duponte, had prayed and prayed for a baby girl for years. years and years and years of trying and trying and trying until eventually, they had given up. and it was only when they’d given up that you came to be.

as a child, you were nothing short of the brightest light in the house. your smile was enough to brighten even the darkest of hearts, your laughter sweeter than even the daintiest christmas bells. you were a dream child – that is, until they stole your light. and how did the do that, you ask ? well, this is truly where our story begins …

and then you saw the zillow ad for a nice house on a small island called kaos. for the first time in forever, something besides ice caught your attention. it was an impulse decision, and a quick move. she waited until both of her parents were out of the house to have all of her things collected, and just like that, she was gone. vanished. no word as to where she was going other than a note that read ‘see you whenever.’ it’s been six months since then, and she has no plans on leaving kaos anytime soon.

iii. wanted plots !!! im also super duper open to brainstorming things of our own ! these are just ideas !!!

1. the former best friend - this is someone that she spent a good majority of her time with before her mother limited interactions with people. they did everything together, whether it be watching a movie or trying to see how long they can get away with hiding in a grocery store after they close. it’s been nearly four years since they’ve spoken, and this might be one of the only people to bring a genuine reaction out of her.

2. the almost, the maybe, the “there’s something there” - they met recently. or maybe they met awhile ago. could work either way. this person was almost successful in attempting to worm their way into her heart. almost, however, is the key word in that statement. having gone so long without genuine human interaction outside of her sport, she hadn’t realized just how much she had longed for a friend. and then, she suddenly liked them as more then a friend, and that was when ella cut off everything. she’ll never admit it, but the idea of building a connection with someone terrified her.

3. the rival - oh, these two do not like each other. the why is something that can be discussed, but just know that there was some sort of altercation that led to the level of dislike between the two of them. could it possibly change ?? maybe so. i’d actually like to see how that pans out. however, as of right now, the most they do is snipe at one another mercilessly

PT.1: GIFs

ok so first i wanna link you to this gif tutorial by @stuckwith-harry​, who is also one of my faves and who i’m forever indebted to because i had no clue where to start and this is literally the tutorial that managed to give me some guideline and in turn led to me actually making edits on the reg. It’s been like 4 years and i still just do it exactly like this tutorial says.

[there’s two little things I do differently a), I never figured out how to use actions oops, so sharpen gifs by going into filters:

and b) the dragging and dropping all at once never worked for me so you go to file > place > This PC > OS (C:) (or whatever the C drive is called > KMPlayer > Capture, then you place one image, and rinse n repeat until all of them are there one by one. Yeah it.. sucks lmao

[ALSO jessie has a fun name while she’s screencapping but since i can’t drag and drop I have to type sometimes to choose files bc imo that’s easier than scrolling. i just put ‘a’ or something as the prefix bc i learned the hard way it is a pain in the ass to have to type/search ‘look who’s about to kiss0001′ like 20 times over. learn from my mistakes]

PT.2: Coloring

Ok, so personally i would recommend that you just play around a bit in photoshop a bit to figure it out best as you can. Personally I like using curves and hue and saturation mostly to color, but there’s lots of things, e.g selective color (if you use this I find it’s easier to just stick to the neutrals/blacks), color balance, etc. in the adjustments window that you can use. Just play around with it for a bit to get used to it and realise what you like :)

PT.3: General:

Ok so as far I remember, the tumblr dimensions are 540px in width (the height doesnt matter too much) if one image is like.. alone in a row [like this], 268px for 2 images in a row [like this], and 177px for those on the sides and 178 for the one in the middle for three in a row [like this]

if you want to make edits rather than gifs, then just open a canvas, place your image(s) and the rest of the steps are the same, pretty much. 

most of your learning is gonna just be getting used to photoshop and more comfortable with it though. practice makes perfect as they say :)

3D modeling. (I was going to school for writing originally, can you tell?)

I have been over and over with myself on this many times. I have a dream to make a very successful title in the indie game atmosphere.

I never went to art school like I was going to. Sometimes I’m glad, other times I’m frustrated idk how to do a lot of the things I’m interested in doing. Like 3D modeling for example.

I realized this dream of mine around 14 when a friend of mine was describing how he wanted to make video games. We had a class that was introducing us to Game Maker Studio. Originally it was a very ugly editor and I wasn’t impressed.

However once we started MAKING I was amazed. I thought games were way too hard to make all the way up to this point. I started taking that media class seriously. All the photoshop tutorials were even showing us how to make game assets, I was stoked!

When I found this new passion I told my friend and he thought it was cool too! We started talking about how we liked certain games like this and how we wanna make a game like “that” etc.

This was sadly a very short lived pipe dream between the two of us. He eventually decided that wasn’t what he wanted to do but it was mostly because of the level of work involved.

It was weird to me something that inspired someone so much was pushed away from it because of the hard work? Of all things? I thought life was mostly hard work, wouldn’t you want to work on a game in that sense? If you had to work on something?

Over the years I studied art more and more. I took an animation class as well. I eventually got accepted and like,FAFSA to cover half of it and I still had to pay a lot of that back, meaning I still needed like 550 a month in just extra payments to attend.

I don’t know if other people had great support for this decision, but I did not. I couldn’t determine what was the right choice for me and I ended up not going. It seemed the one college wasn’t worth it.

It feels like I should have gone to some other kind of dedicated art school but I didn’t. I just went to my local community college and took basic classes.

I got really depressed in this time because school had just become even more boring than when I went to high school. I didn’t feel challenged or interested with anything and I had no motivation to try to do anything. So I dropped out

This dragged on for a few years and then I got a job at a tech company I was really proud of. Over the time I worked there, I grew to hate it.

I left that company and wandered between jobs trying to find something I enjoyed doing. The thing I came back to every time was art and games.

I felt like I couldn’t go back to doing it however. I felt ashamed I turned my back on something that really made me happy and was something that I wasn’t good enough for or something.

It’s taken like 2 years now but I’ve learned a lot and grown in a way I needed. I have learned to accept myself and stuff. I know there wasn’t a lot here about my self hatred but it’s been an issue. I’m learning to live life for me again and not to meet the expectations of others.

It has helped me focus because now it’s for my happiness and not my success which otherwise would be my impending doom, you know? It’s about taking one step at a time.

Here’s another step I’m taking personally. I’m going to be developing games and producing documenting content surrounding it.

I am making two games, a board game, and a video game. The video game is ambitious for someone who has never made a game so that’s why we are doing the board game, and I’m taking the time to learn the things like modeling and such. It’s going to be minimalistic but decent, idk I have a good idea in my head I’m just making the most practical way to get it out right now.

I wanted to write a lot of my recent thoughts so if this post confuses you it’s because it was for me. I need to just produce t h o u g h t sometimes. That’s all, no ending, just end of thought.

My Opinion on...

The character in general: i have a hard time keeping track of multimuses and each individual muse because it’s… a lot. i have limited brain space and my memory is used only as my job as a teacher to memorize facts about safari animals and paper crafts but i absolutely Fucks with what i see and the familiar faces. i blame my inability to scroll my dash to really get a better feel.How you play them: i dont watch dramas. i will never start, EXCEPT……… ur moon lovers muses are really cool and those are the huge standouts for me! i like historical stuff. baekah’s my favorite. he’s very cuddly to me… like a bunny…….. your moon lovers muses and actual luv for it actually had me looking into the show itself. that… is pretty huge. because first of all. i dont care about most tv media. ever. im a very 2000s trashy reality television worshiper im also strictly an 80s to mid2000s anime, wrestling, video games, and horror / action film kind of person.

also i just love stories of a modern person ending up somewhere they shouldnt be. if i ever get the time, i just might watch a few episodes. and that’s where that ‘except’ comes from!!

as far as your ocs go, time traveler is That Dude™ like his entire concept is???? soooo unique? ive seen him in threads, he’s written beautifully. his backstory, the way you write him, the overall motifs of time and memory and feeling lost and the undertone of pain. wow, yo!!!!!!! he deserves a novel or something. a series of short stories, if not a novel. You, the Mun: hard working… very hard working. i enjoy when there’s actual hard work but also passion and fun in a hobby, especially in an environment that’s so controlled and fun + passion sometimes takes a back seat to that hard work. then, it just becomes a show for everyone else and there’s no benefit. u???? u dont cave to that.  keep it up. so supportive too!!!

It’s a little complicated of a situation, but basically the artschool i intended to a few years ago opened a new school just now specialized in manga, video games and animation (the “video game and animation” being the one that is.... really eyeing me). The school itself is kinda selling itself more as a “formation school” than a school, as in, it is supposed to make us in contact with compagnies around the world. (I could meet some of the animators working for the school when I went on the open door days). 

The problem is that the school is kinda expensive and out of our means so a lot of things need to unlock for it to work - Regardless tho, they had a introduction internship planned for this week. And since the artschool somehow remembers me (i’m actually shocked the provisors remembered me i was shit. I may have had a diploma from it but d u d e h o w), even if i came aware of the internship quite late, the provisors still let my internship contract pass because they know I would show up and such. (and, if anything, while the internship would work well to get me into the school (since places are extremely limited), both the diploma i have, my history in their school, and how i apparently impressed the provisors and intervenants during the open doors day, if the money gets to happen i *should* have a place more easily*)

*The Open doors days were w i l d, they had animators and such present the program and i could talk to a couple of people and the more i elaborated both on my formations and my passions and why i was interested I was getting very interested reactions and like, it reminds me that *i have qualifications*. I’m bilingual which is always a plus and it still shocks me that people even more when i mention it casually or how i became so for trivial purposes. I have experience in langue and history schools and translation and such, i have a cultural background, a confirmation in art - and my own personal interests and analyses align with the kind of mindset they want, i spent hours rambling about animation and gaming and technical aspects like.

ANYWAY the Internship - is sooooo great? So far it’s mostly introduction to Game Design, and all the jobs that are available in it - from handling Photoshop and 3D’s programs (note to self 3D programs are a lowkey form of death), to analysing the marketting, to even explore the writting aspect of a production of a project, and all the things that must be taken into account by a productor (what to use, what purpose does it serves, thinking about level designs, about how it supports your project ect..). All of that with game trivia analysis in the middle.

And we’re only 7 so we’re closely followed and in a really cool espace and I’m handling it quite well, more or less (again, battling against the 3D program and yelling but *technically* i’m managing). And there’s a good ambiance in general.

so djkhfd maybe it’s too early to say “it’s going well!” and it finishes tomorrow afternoon so i’m midway through the internship, but ye this is really the sort of ambiance i really like and it’s not nearly as stressful as I expected. And it makes me realize that in a team, this is maybe the kind of elements I could eventually feel more at ease into.

Also i’m really getting along with the teacher and we talked a lot, and she compliments either my job a lot (which still baffles meeee, but at the same time there’s an aspect of it that makes me confident. Ie we had to make a “fake video game pitch” at some point and make a cover for it with a summary and all, and i was preparing mine and she went behind me and went “this is really good! and it’s really well written!” and my reaction was “ye, i’m glad i found the right police character” and she was like “no. I mean, the synthaxe.” “AH. Thanks.” i’m an idiot) or she is really enthusiast by how enthusiast i am (i keep replying all her questions like “do you know what are the different parts of the developpers’s works” and I was just, always mentioning something dkfhdkff she knew my name after 3 hours bc of how talkative i was about all of those) idk there’s something so validating to see my passion on stuff being validated and see i can make a decent work applying it i’m really happy dkjfhdk

Moreso, since it’s in my sister’s city (which is far from my parents’s house), i’m remaining at my sister’s place for a few days and tbh this is probably the most relieving part of it, far from the parents, i don’t really talk to them a lot, and while my sis is under some stress bc of my parents (very long story), she’s so much chill and sweet and it feels so much more comfortable than when we see at our parents’ home (and we could discuss in length yesterday about “how our parents ruined our lives”, the most validating convo ever tbh). 

So i’m in a good ambiance, good environment, and i’m doing stuff i like. 

There will be a few things to adjust if i can get the opportunity to get to the school, but ye, for now i’m trying not to think about this big If in case of disappointment and i’m trying to enjoy what i’m doing now - and it’s really a tone of fun. 

So ye dkjhfd we’ll see how the two next days will go,but so far i’m loving my stay and it’s really fun. :’D
