Okay, I know the English internet spends a lot of time staring and ongoing political disasters in the US and the UK and oh what disasters they are, but CANADA 🇨🇦 WE GOTTA FOCUS FOR A MINUTE.
Ontario has municipal elections THIS MONDAY OCTOBER 24th! And you need to show up and vote!
Just like all our regular provincial and federal elections, it is okay if you aren't sure if you are on the voters rolls or if you info got updated after you moved or whatever - YOU CAN DEFINITELY VOTE AS LONG AS YOU ARE A CANADIAN LIVING IN THAT SPOT. You just bring proof of your address to the polling place and you'll be fine, I promise. I've done it. It takes like 2 minutes to sign the paper declaring you do indeed live there.
Now you may be asking "but do these elections really matter?" And the answer is YES THEY MATTER SO MUCH. There are racists and xenophobes and transphones and sexist and antisemitic and antivax people running all over the place and the one thing we know by now is that bigots get organized to get to the polls so we have to also organize to counter them by voting!
There are probably 3 things you need to look up who to vote for in your area: mayor, councillor, and school board trustee. All three matter! Please don't only focus on mayor, if the terfs get onto the school boards, they'll do serious damage.
So what can you do?
- First, search "[your town] election" and you'll get the link to the official election page on your city website. It'll tell you the poll hours for THIS MONDAY OCTOBER 24th and you'll be able to find your polling place and a sample ballot showing all the people running for all the roles (mayor, councillor, school board) in your district.
- Check out the candidates! If you want to narrow it down, for major things like mayor you can see which 3 or 4 people have a realistic shot of getting more than 10% of the vote based on polls and then look at the platforms for just those people. For more niche things like school board, you probably need to look at every candidate but less will be running. Please check the CBC article I linked above to narrow down the obvious terfs.
- Make a plan of when you are going to vote! Know what time is best for you to go and how you will get there.
- Get your friends and family to plan to vote too! Help them out by sharing your research and let them know who you are voting for for each part. Sometimes the idea of doing the research into candidates is too daunting, but if you share your plan with them, you can get more people to the polls.
- IF YOU AREN'T IN ONTARIO: Reach out to your friends and family here and ask what their plan to vote is. Help them out with the above if you can.
So much stuff gets decided at the municipal level, but they are expecting record low turnout and low turnout is dangerous for shitty people getting into positions that matter. We are already stuck with a clown at the province level. We need to make sure people who will work against him get elected at your local level.
It's one day, probably 45 minutes of your time including travel both ways and any line at busy times. Honestly, voting usually takes me 7 minutes at most at the polls even whe I was a student and voting in weird ways. They make it so easy if you just show up.
MASK UP AND GET TO THE POLLS ONTARIO!

currently researching the process of getting a canadian work visa bc that's my next step for after graduation (i already have a potential job lined up, i just need to make sure that position would be able to fit the requirements for a work visa) and while i cannot say i'm much closer to having this all figured out than when i started, i can say it gave me a delightfully unhinged idea for an episode in my aubrey webseries someday

And maybe you'll be like "but if you don't trust businesses, how can you trust welfare?"
I fucking don't. My mom trying to get on food stamps fucked me up because a lady I never met without my permission got my SSN from my mom and started editing my files. My heart still races to this very second whenever I think about it, it kinda messed me up bad and I'll never ever ever see any kind of recourse
And I'm terrified that I'm gonna lose my medicaid just cause I inherited some money from my grandpa
And I've never even applied for disability cause it kinda doesn't matter finding out if I'd qualify or not cause of my depression, when the rules are so restrictive I don't know if I've even be allowed to keep my house
I do not fucking trust these things on a personal level. I feel like out of a lot of people I have the most to fear from them cause I'm on the edge of having things work, and that gets you punished
...but I need medicaid in order to have insurance (and when you strip out the finance side of medicaid, I love medicaid... they're honestly incredible insurance... I just... I just... dental is like 90% of why medicaid is so important to me, ever since I found out this state pays for it I've actually been able to do cleanings which is important to me cause I can't always get myself to brush)
And I think things like disability and food stamps are pretty damn important on a personal level, and honestly are also good for the economy cause they get people spending... it's practically a free cash infusion into the economy, cause these are people who need to buy stuff
There's just so much important stuff welfare does that it's worth dealing with government
No, what I want is more accountability so if someone gets my SSN from a 3rd party like my mom they're held to HIPPA styles standards where that's not ok to access my files without my permission (She changed my fucking address and tried to get medicaid to investigate me for fraud! Never even met me)
Like have some accountability there and in every situation
Secondly I want less punitive focused rules. I'd frankly prefer bezos get on disability than smack down some poor sod cause they got $2000 in the bank or cause their friend lets them live with them for free
If there's gonna be a cut off on these programs, it needs to be a solid step above the poverty line, cause... by definition I assume poverty line denotes kinda the minimum expected income people can reasonably live off of, and if you take away benefits people are gonna lose a chunk of money to covering that stuff themself, so you need a buffer before you kick people off
I don't fucking trust the government for a second, I've actively been fucked by them and on a personal level I avoid everything but medicaid and only that cause everything but the money is pleasant to deal with and I kinda need it (honestly if I was rich I'm not even kidding that I'd rather give medicaid like $400 a month than some insurance company, I sincerely like them as insurance)
But I'd trust them a lot more if they were less punitive, less out to hunt me down and gut me cause someone handed me a fiver or cause I started to get on my feet, and if government employees had concrete rules they had to follow that were actually transparent and enforced
Like 90% of my problems with welfare go away if they're held accountable and there's less "catch the welfare cheats" mentality going around
I don't trust the government in the slightest, but sadly there some jobs it kinda has to do, so I'd just rather force it to be an open book where the public can keep an eye on it and if they step out of line there's consequences (sort of like I don't trust most mega corps but happen to sometimes need stuff from them... did you know literally every cell service provider has been illegally selling shit like your location data to random people like bounty hunters, and the FCC just slapped them with a fine that's 0.02% of their yearly incomes and debated even doing that? I even can offer a source on that)
...I don't trust much of any authority cause they constantly fail me and kinda screw me. Don't trust doctors either, but I still gotta go to them, you know? ...they're just... they're real bad at listening... so many systems need systemic change
(You know who I really don't trust is the cops. I could point to so many examples. My uncle doesn't trust cops either, and he's an ex Fire and SWAT paramedic, he worked with them and we still got into a long conversation where he basically tore into them far better than I can)
(I don't trust authority that's not accountable)
#anyway; if I'm a lousy cheat or whatever least they can do is give me a gun so I can solve that problem#shit makes me wish I was canadian so I could take advantage of their sick implementation of assisted suicide#what should be a system that gives people a choice about the quality of their life; and I don't think should be relegated to terminal illne#...there was... think he was dutch; had been burned by his girlfriend all over his body; was in constant pain#and he ended up using assisted suicide in the end cause he was just in constant agony... think that's his choice to make#but of course the canadian system concretely pushes people; mostly the poor and disabled; to kill themselves#not theoretically; as in literally says word for word to them 'you should really kill yourself; just sign here'#it's sick; it truly is#but for any americans that want to dunk on it; I'm telling you we're no better#we have the exact same miserable desperation and people (again; mostly poor and disabled) into despair#only difference is we don't offer assisted suicide#the underlying issues in the US and canada are so damn similar; so much of what's happening ends up being the same#you can't act smug just cause you only make people want to die instead of also offering to help#that's like saying that you're the good guy cause while you did everything you could to drive someone to the brink#get them fired; slash their tires; just cartoon level villain stuff to personally harass this person... at least you won't hand them rope#we have such similar systemic issues to canada; and I am explicitly telling you that like the people in canada that have said#'I can't take it anymore; disability doesn't cover my expenses and I can't get any help... I'm at my wits end so I'm gonna go die'#I'm telling you that I feel that same way; just without any eugenics agency I can call up#I'm really working to get things stable; but it feels like I'm teetering on the edge of falling into permanent failure#and... and I'll actually tell you the amount even though I don't like to mention money... makes me feel guilty#my gramps left me $27k; which sounds like a lot; but I got 20 windows that need redoing (house has a lot of windows)#...if they ended up being 1k each; that's most of the money gone; if they end up being more...#and I got a whole lotta other stuff I've been putting off like plumbing around here; need to replace that faucet#it's an amount of money that helps; but it's an amount of money that isn't gonna last#...that's like a year of bills; and my mom already needs me to pay like $400 to the propane bill since she got behind#I want to use it to... to try and really get my feet on the ground; but it might loose me my insurance... it makes me want to die#and not to be a selfish bastard; but if I could I'd like to try and take and invest a bit to maybe build some passive income#given that... that a job never seems to work out for me cause I fucking suck and cause like... my insomnia has me up at 5:30 am right now#mm tag so i can find things later

Time for some malicious compliance for the "parental ""rights""" Bullshit some of the provinces are pushing, at least until a court somewhere overthrows them as the illegal human rights violations they are. "Hello Mrs. Anderson I'm just calling to ask if it's alright for your son to go by Brandon A, as there are 3 other Brandons in his class. 😊 Is this alright with you? 😊 We need these consent forms to be signed, please. 😊 Oh he also likes going by A-man and his nickname this week is pudding because of that incident, you know how kids are.😊 I'm afraid I'll need consent forms for those as well (and lets not forget he'll piss and moan about you being a buzzkill if you don't)😊 If you find this fucking annoying and a waste of your time and mine when I should be teaching your kid long division, take it up with Premiers Higgs, Moe, or Smith. Or all three at once. 😊 Yes I WILL be contacting you again if he decides he wants the nickname "Super Awesome Cool Dude" 😊

Headcanons on Kid's accent quirks.
Alright, so this has been bothering the hell out of me recently, and I need to get all of this out in the open and clarify a bunch of things. I'm going to write a condensed version on his carrd eventually, but I wanted to have a full version written here so I can elaborate as much as I want without feeling restricted.
We all know that I remind everyone every twenty seconds that Kid is very Scottish; or, rather, the One Piece equivalent of Scottish. For the sake of explaining what I'm talking about, just bear with me temporarily and pretend his birth island is an exact replica of Scotland for a moment.
When I first started writing him more seriously, I decided to give him the quirk of intentionally hiding his accent, because when he doesn't, his accent is actually VERY heavy, often to the point where people not very familiar with the accent might not fully understand what he's saying, and he loathes having to repeat himself. Additionally, sometimes people might try to tease him or mock him for it, and while he himself doesn't care about that himself, some of his nakama are also from his birth island, and by insulting his accent, they're also being ridiculed, so he's like "fuck you, you don't deserve to hear it if you're gonna be a little shit about it". Anyway, he masks his accent to different levels, and it comes in several different degrees:
1) Entirely masked, so you probably wouldn't notice it at all unless you were familiar with it or actively listening out for it.
2) Mostly masked, so he might have a little more oomph in his R sounds and he has more depth in his O sounds, but it's still speaking fairly neutrally. There's a natural growl in his words and his vowels are affected.
3) Somewhat masked; he's actively speaking with a distinct Scottish accent, but only uses occasional Scottish slang, phrases, or idioms, so it's unlikely you wouldn't be able to understand him.
4) Not masking at all, full blown accent out, using slang and terminology exclusive to his birth island, phrases people might not know, specific idioms, etc etc.
5) Literally speaking Scots Gaelic which isn't the same thing but I like when he does that so I'm mentioning it here.
Usually I have him at a 1 when he's meeting someone new and/or is being serious and intense, annunciating, actively and consciously masking. Most of the time, he's around a 2 as a neutral default. He starts slipping into a 3 when he's losing his composure a bit and not really thinking about masking, so when he starts getting very pissed off, when he's a little to moderately intoxicated, if he's feeling unwell or in pain, tired, or if he's just relaxing around his nakama. He's only at a 4 when he's exclusively around the select members of his crew from his birth island, so Killer, Heat, Wire, and a couple of the other guys who've known him since before they became pirates. Alternatively, he'll do it publicly or if he's extremely, EXTREMELY drunk. It also doesn't help that he's slurring his words really heavily when he's drunk enough to do this, so sometimes even Killer is just like. "I don't think that was even a real sentence..." He only speaks Gaelic with Killer, and then later with Shou (@snowdrcp) because she starts learning the language.
Anyway, finally on to why I'm actually making this post this long and detailed.
Normally I only mention an increase in the degree of Kid's accent in the monologue, and I don't normally write it phonetically in his dialogue because I would have to add a translator's note every single time, and to be honest, I'm just not familiar enough with Scottish to make it sound all that natural. However, when Kid is speaking casually, I do like to change some specific words, such as "you" becoming "ya", and "your/you're" becoming "yer", as well as removing the G from words ending in -ing. This isn't so much meant to be an indicator of his accent or its intensity but instead because Kid just talks naturally colloquially in my head, and he often has a bit of a husky drawl. I don't always include this; sometimes it makes the sentence structure sound weird, or sometimes if he's really focused or alert, he's annunciating more and therefore doesn't speak so informally. However, he sounds really stiff in my head if I don't include this in his regular dialogue, and I intended for it to be a subtle reminder of the fact that he's speaking lazily even when he's not exposing his accent very much.
My problem is that when I make him sound more Scottish, like a 3 and up, every time he says the words "you" or "your/you're" it would not sound like "yer" at all; due to the way Scottish accents sound when pronouncing those syllables, it would be pronounced more like "yooh", and "yoohr". So sometimes, I have the issue of Kid getting angry at someone he's yelling at, and I'm writing his dialogue, but for the sake of being consistent I'm keeping him using "ya" and "yer", even though it isn't congruent with how he would actually be speaking if it was audible and not written dialogue. My concern is that if I suddenly switch over mid conversation, it's going to look ugly from a writing perspective, and kind of sloppy on my part if I keep changing how I'm writing the same words.
I guess I basically just wanted to explain how I intend for his voice to sound, and ask if it would be an issue for anyone if I started throwing in some "yoohs" and "yoohrs" to flavor his dialogue when I feel it's appropriate to do so, without people thinking it's a typo/mistake, or inconsistent.
I'd love to have opinions on whether doing this would look too unnatural or peculiar, and I'd be really grateful for any kind of feedback on the issue.
Thanks so much if you read all of that and made it to the end!

Okay so that one post made me curious how many different languages we are forcing the Frontier-kids to learn so if y'all would be so kind as to comment on/reblog this for science with any languages you headcanon them as learning, even if it was just for a one-off AU 10 years ago, that would be much appreciated :3
I'll go first so from me, here's what they get:
Takuya
Italian (because he moves there and becomes a famous football player)
English (because it's obligatory and also he becomes an internationally famous football player)
French (so he can flirt with Kouji's workmate (he learns french french though because it's the language of looooove~))
Kouji
Swedish (for DDH when he's digital adventuring with a bunch of Swedes)
French (the canadian version, because he ends up working with a person from there who refuses to speak anything else)
English (because he works with people from all over the globe)
Japanese sign language (a silly suggestion made when he was sick, but Kouichi forced him to go through with it)
American sign language (because he decided to force everyone he works with to learn signlanguage and they all agreed that ASL was the easiest to get classes on)
Kouichi
Swedish (For DDH as well)
Italian (he kinda had to because his partners (Junpei and Izumi) decided to move there so now he's a doctor in Italy because no way he's breaking up with them)
English (everyone gets english as a threat)
JSL (because it sounded like a fun thing to learn)
Italian sign language (to easier communicate with mute/deaf/other non-verbal patients in Italy without an interpreter)
Tomoki
English (because he's a gamer and games with people from all over the world)
Izumi
English (because it's obligatory)
Italian (actually she already knows that so does this count?)
Japanese (since I added Italian for her I guess I have to add japanese as well???)
Junpei
English (because it's obligatory)
Italian (because he moves to Italy to study music and wops now he lives there)

people are so weird about stopping for animals on the road. sorry but if you don't have the ability to see that the squirrel standing on the side of the completely straight 40kph road 10 houses ahead is going to bolt in front of you, you can't do that with children either & should not be driving. it is literally a skill issue.
#''so you're expecting me to predict the future??'' no i'm telling you to pay fucking attention to the road dumbass#i have yet to hit anyone or anything because i pay attention to what is on the road around me & i go the speed limit#i managed to stop my car when a deer jumped out in front of me in the middle of the night because of this apparently supernatural skill#sorry if you can't do this maybe you shouldn't be driving then#edit to say the dude i'm arguing with about this just said they have t.rex vision. they ''only hit things that aren't moving''#WRONG thing to say to me very specifically there bud. t.rex had AMAZING vision#also you don't even live here. you're in toronto. why are you here#plus admitting you hit things with your car does not help your case. i am not convinced you shouldn't have your licence taken away#funny how you can say ''i follow the speed limit & pay attention'' & people will get mad at that#to the point you actively have to tell them ''do you think i'm swerving into oncoming traffic? cuz i am not doing that''#also i guarantee their stance would change in less than a second when i remind them BABY CANADIAN GEESE ARE RAISED HERE#THEY WALK ON THE ROAD TO GET TO THE RIVER. DO YOU WANT TO BE RESPONSIBLE FOR BABY GEESE DYING#DO YOU WANT THE GEESE TO REMEMBER YOU AS THE GUY WHO DID THAT. CUZ I SURE AS FUCK DON'T#i live next to the river & an elementary school & there are a criminal lack of crosswalks#i am going the fucking speed limit & i don't care if that pisses you off or makes you late. you are the weirdo here#editing again to say i'm teaching this guy about dinosaur evolution now. character development

like i'm literally trying to put this as simply as humanly possible. the way that you are taught to view what it means to be a canadian or american or brit or whatever, the idea of Who you are, has built into it that by being From There you are fundamentally different or better or more Real than the rest of the world, and this is conveyed to you both overtly and subtly from an extremely young age, sometimes passively and sometimes directly, and you are taught these basic assumptions about the world, they become part of the way you navigate the world before you really have the words to explain or describe it. and i'm telling you that people born in the global south are typically not told these things, not conveyed this about ourselves from childhood, this is not something we are taught. the assumption, from an extremely young age, is that the world is full of "real people" and "real countries", whatever that means. there are more specific sectarian or communalist things taught to us depending on where we live and other aspects of the material conditions we are born into, but the basic assumption of "my country is the only real country in the world" and "only people born in my country are real people" is not universal, you did not enter this life thinking that way, it is something ingrained in you. and you can choose to unlearn that, or you can choose not to, but if you whine on the internet about people from the developing world being mean to you because you are insisting on your right to not view us as human beings i think you are too far gone
