idk but saying jennifer lynn barnes sucks at writing romance because your ship wasn't canon is beyond hilarious to me like okay???? HAHHAHAHA. everyone has their own preferences of course but the vehement hatred for jlb and the belittlement of her writing on booktok and bookstagram (sometimes on here) has been ASTOUNDING.
a note about the "poorly done romance/love triangle" in tig: jlb never said it was going to be "even". no one ever said that. personally pioneering the idea that one character was "not given a chance" does not make it a poorly written love triangle or a poorly written romance. in love triangles, there is usually ALWAYS one option who is simply NOT a real option. look me in the eye and tell me characters jeremiah fisher, aspen in the selection series, gale hawthorne, adam kent, jacob black, and i'm sorry but grayson hawthorne amongst a myriad of others were actual contenders for the main character. if you believed they are/wanted them to be, that's great! but all of these characters are in well known love triangles and at the end of the day, books with love triangles WILL sell because they generate conversation and hype around the book. it is a marketing tactic and you are NEVER promised equal opportunity from both love interests. you losing the love triangle or that you believe there is wasted potential doesn't mean bad writing has occurred. also, for the love of god, while you are supposed to relate to a character, you are not the main character!! belly, america, katniss, juliette, avery, what have you, all chose based on who they are as characters. and also, female characters don't have to "experience" both love interests to make a decision. if they want to, that's totally fine, but specifically about avery bc this is what this blog is all about, she absolutely knows what she's "missing out" on with grayson and she doesn't care. shipping averygrayson just blatantly feels like ignoring avery's wants and needs.
anyway, if you want to call jlb's writing poorly done bc you didn't get your way, that's totally fine. you are entitled to your own opinion. it's just funny that you say that bc had grayson and avery been randomly thrown together in the epilogue of tfg or something, i have a feeling you wouldn't be of this opinion.
tldr; love triangles are a marketing tactic and you are neither entitled to a win nor is is poorly done/executed if you lose. love triangles, more often than not, have a clear winner from the beginning (coughcough "see? you're already his") but the debate and drama of another character sells the book.

pairing - grayson hawthorne x fem!reader.
summary - grayson hawthorne has a hard time living for just himself. but the love that he shares with y/n will always make him feel at ease.
warnings - this is set before the first book, so none, only kissing and romance.

a/n: this has been stuck in my drafts for a long time, and i finally finished it :) now, i will be getting to your requests.

the bed slightly dipped, as the boy climbed in besides her. he was trying to be very quiet since it was already night, and everything was peaceful.
but he failed, when he felt y/n stir and turn around, facing him, "where were you?" her voice was a little raspy, and grayson couldn't help but smile at her tired state.
the girl had stayed up, waiting for her boyfriend, but soon sleep took over her and she went to bed. her arm wrapped around his waist as she snuggled closer to him, missing his warmth.
"just had to do some papers," his hand went to her waist, pulling her closer to his chest.
"you should take a break."
"hm."
"you know i'm right."
silence.
grayson hawthorne played an important role in his family. he wasn't the eldest nor the youngest, but almost everything stood on his shoulders. he was raised differently than his brothers. one day, he was going to inherit the heir, so it was important for grayson to do everything right. not make a single mistake.
but how can a person be happy if he can't let himself slip? if he can't let himself breathe and let go.
that's why y/n didn't let him get lost in the hawthorne life. even though grayson has a strong character, the girl isn't afraid to speak her mind. that's what pulled the boy towards her. the wise heart. the honesty. and of course the love that she gave to others.
"just because others have made unrealistic expectations about you doesn't mean you should follow them. you are your own person, grayson. sometimes it's okay to take a break, even if some may get mad."
and just like that, grayson fell in love with her even more.
"you know," his hand went to her cheek, "sometimes i wonder how lucky i got with you," he stroked her skin, his touch making goosebumps appear on her arms.
"i think you should stop with that cheesy crap," the girl smiled and rolled on her back.
not even a second later his hand went to her hip and she felt light kisses be planted on her neck, "i can't help it if i have a beautiful girl with me," his lips moved along her jaw, stopping upbove hers, "but you are so much more then beautiful to me, y/n."
"i'm serious about what i said grayson," she looked into his eyes, her hand went to the back of his neck, "i love you and i don't want you to over stress yourself. i just want to help."
"believe me, you're helping me a lot, love," with that, his lips connected with hers, into a passionate kiss. and in this moment, grayson hawthorne was reminded again that no amount of money was as important as the girl beneath him.
with the love that they felt for each other, the couple would get through anything. just as long as they were together.

I just finished the brothers Hawthorne and it didn't engage me as much as the trilogy but I really enjoyed seeing so much more of jameson and grayson.
Also, I love how all the other graysons are normal people and mostly nice and not insane like sheffield.
Interesting about Rohan and slate. Can't wait to see Rohan's story in TGG!

Long fic ✂️ snippet ✂️: til the waves wash away our sins
Sirius dreams of his brother the night he dies. Under the shade of the Hawthorne tree they loved so much, Regulus tells him he regrets having left the way he did the last time they were together like this.
"I wanted to leave first but you beat me to it," Sirius says. "I didn't want to fight and any longer we really would've been. I couldn't. Not while we were there."
"I know."
"Is that why you left?"
"Yes," Regulus contemplates, "and no."
Sirius makes an inquisitive sound.
"I wanted to leave first, instead of waiting and being left behind again."
Sirius is quick to look back down, hating the way his eyes prickle and struggle to hold the tears that threaten to fall. Not fair.
"I didn't want to be left behind under our tree not when for me, it's where you always promised to wait."
The effect of his brother's words is instantaneous; Sirius hates the way guilt threatens to eat him alive. Regulus will always be his one weakness — nothing and no one can make him second guess all his decisions, all his choices, but his brother. Walburga doesn't come close. It's always Regulus. "I hate that you keep bringing that up against me, like some bloody fucking dagger whenever you feel hurt. What? You liked seeing me bleed on mum's ancient rugs so much, you'd rather that's better just so you feel less alone? Then how does that feel for me, when my brother wants me suffering instead of alive!"
He's seething, he can't believe it. Sirius didn't want to do this. Not under the stupid fucking Hawthorne tree. "You're so selfish," he says, disbelief and hurt pouring over his words. Why does his brother hate him so much? He buckles under the thought of Regulus hating him especially when the cost of his brother's love is his own life. Sirius loathes that he'd give his bleeding heart to his brother, all of it, and all Regulus would do is look at it and ask why he isn't giving up his soul too. He knows so well that he used to hold his little brother's heart. Until one day, Regulus decided he didn't want to be loved by him anymore. And still, the selfishness is there, Regulus wants to own all of him while giving nothing of himself away. Sirius is woefully bereft of a brother, one he aches for to this day, even as he sits beside Regulus under the shade of the tree that kept their childhood safe.

The Inheritance Games ranked. (And why)
The Hawthorne Legacy for me is the best one so far. I love how it was written. The plotline was enjoyable and easy to understand. Why I would put it first would be the character dynamics and growth in the book. Even though Avery was still in love triangle, I liked how she still had good scenes with both of the boys. WE had a decent amount of Nash and Xander which was nice. I have also reread it the most, so that is another factor as well.
The Brothers Hawthorne is next. Even though I didn't care for Jameson's plotline, I would still rank it as second best. I loved Grayson's plotline, and Gigi was amazing! We get the growth for Grayson I was hoping for. Though Nash and Xander weren't in it as much as I was hoping, I did enjoy the scenes they were in. JB has also opened some more mysteries for us to puzzle over, and I can't wait to see what is next!
The Inheritance Games comes in third. I did enjoy it. It was a little slow getting into it, but after chapter 13 I was hooked. I guess what I didn't really like was several things. I know why Avery had troubled getting along with everyone, but that was something I didn't like reading. In THL she is on good terms with almost everyone. Avery could be annoying. Jameson acted in ways that I did not care for at all! And the whole Emily plot was getting irritating.
The Final Gambit comes in last. There were good scenes, but most of it I did not enjoy. Eve could have been left out. I hated how Toby was dealt with. I wish Avery hadn't given the money away. Grayson was done dirty. And there wasn't enough Nash and Xander. I also didn't like the short story either. I know a lot of people think it was funny, but I do not. JB could have done better.

It has been three days since I finished the brothers hawthorne, and I don't know what to do with my life.
BTW, I am completely obssessed with Grayson and phone girl...like girl appeared 3 times and had him saying her voice was "honey-rich" and "a balm on open wounds." My boy hasn't even met her and is completely affected by her, he can't stop thinking about. Phone girl must have one hell of a voice to have him like that. Can't wait for the grandest game, it is obvious she will appear, but I am not sure what her role will be and how Grayson will be affected by it.

Hello.. Can you write a Grayson Hawthorne story where he starts feeling sick in the middle of a foundation event? Maybe then Oren/Alisa/one of his brothers will notice and take care of him..
Can l write? No no can't... Did l try yes
You have been warned from this point forward, proceed at your own discretion ⚠️
A soft clink of a glass brought brought the chatter of the hall to a soft murmur over  excited tables eager to hear the opening speech
Alisa voice rang clear and warmly over the speaker.
“Welcome, it is wonderful to see so many familiar faces joining us for the birth of this heart felt project that has been years in the making“ She smiled brightly at the guests, then turned her gaze to the Hawthorne table letting her pride shine through before continuing with the speech.
At the Hawthorne table things where going as planned, in order not a hint of chaos or mayhem… of course. Yep not a hint of chaos
Grayson prepped to join Alisa, Jameson waved and gave  dazzling smiles to guests that looked to them. Avery listened intently also ready to speak, Xander discreetly fed his recently acquired friend that nestled in his pocket. Whilst Nash distracted Libby from getting nervous with an origami puzzle trick.

Grayson went over his speech softly murmuring and repeating it to himself in order to get his head in the game. He would not let a stupid flue get in the way of all the hard work that went into ensuring this gala was a success anything less then perfect was unacceptable and it was his responsibility to represent his fami- damn it this hall was hot, how was nobody sweating was he sweating. The sharp drilling pain in his head grew as the crowd clapped at something Alisa said.
Wait was it his turn? No no to early, maybe-
“Gray, Grayson, are you okey? You don't look to good… “
Averys voice brought him back, everyone concerned gaze was on him. Nash leaned towards him
“Hey you wanna take a minute”
“No, I'm fine” he replied his stomach did a backflip
“You look like a soggy egg sandwich that's been left in the sun.” Xander quipped
Nash got up to go round Greysons side
“That's it come on up ya go” He hauled him up  like a sack of potatoes “let's take a little trip to the bathroom before our table and flowers go from lilac white to muddy yellow.”
“I'm fine”
“Yeah yeah, come on.” Nash said as he discreetly led him away to the bathroom.
“What the hell did he eat?”
“Maybe we should go with him”
“Is everyone looking at us it feels like everyone's looking at us.”
“psst Jameson, look at the picture l took, he looks like the Jack Nicholson in the snow meme ”
“Everybody stay calm” libby chirped in a sing song voice trying not to panic.
“Libby seriously it's fine, l'm sure Greyson will be back soon l'll take over for Gra- AW what thefuck-”
Jameson swore bringing up his blood finger
“Xander?” Jameson asked
“Mmh”
“What just bit me?”
“Mr Gizmo Wayne Hawthorne the I”
“And what exactly is Mr Gizmo Wayne Hawthorne the first?”
“I believe he's a fruit bat although he's the size of a kitti's hog nosed bat. Interesting enough the-”
“You brought a bat!” Avery squeaked lowering her voice when the table next to them gave them a curious look and Alisa gave them a jovial nervous glance and made a joke that drew everyone's attention back to her.
“Why is he even here? He's ugly, rude and may have more disease then the CDC. What if he's what made Grayson sick?“
A little nose and beady eyes glared at Jameson from Xanders pocket and made a series of grumbling sounds.
“Oh Lord, l need to go warn Nash.” Libby dashed off
“Hey! For your information he has a clean bill of health, l checked him out myself. Thank you. As for why he's here he's family, plus thanks to the project, the research facility he came from is shut down and no longer needed. Look at that little face, would this face not encourage you to donate”
Avery wrapped Jamesons fingers and peaked at the wound trying to be as gentle as possible.
“Xander?! Okey guys thats it, we're all heading to the toilets. We need to disinfect your wound, let Nash and Oren know what's going on and get Mr Wayne whatever his name away, far away from the guests.”
They scurried off to the bathroom, where upon opening the men's room the sound of someone violently throwing up greeted them. Libby leaned against the sink as she bit her nails, looking into the fancy stall where Nash was holding Graysons head back and rubbing his back softly on the floor.
Like he did when they were children.
“Xander, l ALWAYS KNEW you would KILL ME just not like THIS” Greyson grumbled
“Remember what mum always  says negative emotions. Will make you sicker, exhale that negativity on three.” Xander replied as Nash gave him a warning stare.
“l can just  see the headlines, Hawthorne heirs taken to soon by deadly infection… maybe ebola or Marburg…  with how Grayson is looking…
Cause of death rat with wings”
“Your not helping.” Nash reprimed
“Besides aren't we getting ahead of ourselves-”
“See thank you, that's what l've been saying, sorry go on” Xander interrupted
“As l was saying, before we call the CDC again let's go through all the steps. I already informed Oren, Libby has the emergency bag, We're running our blood and what we can test for has come back negative so Jameson, no  you do not have Marburg or Ebola. Someone's already on the way to double check, okey?” He said as he got more tissue to wipe Some of the sweat off Grayson and rested him on his shoulder.
Avery finished off washing Jamesons hand and was dealing with the wound as he asked
“Nash?”
“Jameson, yes”
“If we're quarantined, can it be in the LA station?”
Avery gave him a light shove.
“Jameson what did l just say!”
“What it could still be Ebola or something new given Mr Gizmo Wayne hawthorne the I previous home.”
“He has nothing to do with this” Xander protested, bringing him out of his pocket and cradling him to his chest. “He's probably cleaner then anyone in this room.” He murmured cooing at his little friend, that Grayson glared at.
“We're gonna die and a movies gonna be made about this day, with Xander as patient 0 like that Contagion movie”  Grayson groaned “l need to go give me speech.”
“Grayson seriously not you to”

WALKS IN
lemon futon + "can we ever have a quiet weekend??"
(ada chuuya au maybe :eyes: ) kunichuu + "told you it'd work out!"
lousia + nathaniel "why did we even bother?"
naomi + haruno "i got this"
teruko + mushitaro "do you ever stop talking?"
I was literally thinking of Lemon Futon so they get to be above the read more
"Can we ever have a quiet weekend?" Katai groans, curled up in his futon and trying to avoid the very loud gunfire outside. "If you wanted a quiet weekend, you wouldn't have agreed to have me as a roommate now, would you?" Kajii says, laughing as he flops onto the futon, throwing yet another lemon grenade out the window. The loud BOOM shakes the entire space they're in, and Katai pokes his head out to glare at Kajii. "Please tell me you have some hobbies that don't involve explosions, or terrorism." Kajii lets out a contemplative hum, tossing a lemon up and down in his hand. "Well, I wouldn't say no to a night at the opera!"
Agency Chuuya coming right up!
"Told you it'd work out!" Kunikida just... stares. He's sitting on the ground, covered in dust, glasses askew. Chuuya, on the other hand, has a massive grin on his face, despite also being covered in dirt, despite being surrounded by fallen concrete and very injured Port Mafia grunts, and that grin is directed right towards Kunikida. He finally re-adjusts his glasses. "I... I guess by my own definitions, it did." And Chuuya, vibrant, fireball of a man Chuuya, laughs at him.
Louisa and Nathaniel is not a combo I thought of
"Why did we even bother?" Louisa sits staring at the ground, trying not to gag on the smell of smoke, the sound of the flames crackling, the wreckage just in the corner of her eyes. Hawthorne, standing just in front of her, does the opposite, staring directly into the flame. It shines orange on his glasses, ash starting to stain his hair, and his expression... She expected it to be bitter, really. Or sad. Or angry. But it's just tired. And quietly, she finds just enough of her own voice to say, "I don't know."
Naomi + Haruno except I've never written Haruno before
"I got this!" "I'm sure you do, it's just-" Haruno winces, watching as Naomi slides down another rock. "You should be careful!" "It's just some rocks." "Rocks covered in algae and moss-" "But nothing I can't handle!" Naomi says confidently, outright hopping down onto another rock, and Haruno swears she sees her foot slip just a little bit. "Oh," she says, clutching her chest and leaning against the railing. "Your brother is going to kill me."
Ah Teruko and Mushitaro, the two asked to kill the person they cared about most... I think this is the first I've written of them interacting before.
"Do you ever stop talking?" Mushitaro blinks, staring at the young girl sitting cross-legged on the seat opposite of him. "Excuse me?" She rolls her eyes, of course. "All you do is blab blab blab, and frankly? It's annoying. At least gimme some info about the crimes you committed or something!" "I'll have you know the history of the occult is very fascinating, and-" and then her last sentence registers and he stops, staring at her with wide eyes. "Wait- crimes? What- what crimes could you possibly mean?" The girl grins. And he gets the deep, cold sense that he is in very, very deep trouble.

LOOK
I personally found Avery very very boring and basic
She was a PAIN to have as a protagonist, she was very one dimensional and Plain
And I think Lyra Kane is gonna be just as boring. I NEED some spice, some SEMBLANCE of personality
Avery's personality is white, plain, Sugar-y asf spoilt Milk.
I betchu lyras is gonna be worse—
Kinda sorry to the Lyra Kane fans tho
Like I've read so many books and after one point you can predict what type of charectors an author can write. You understand their scope and calibre.
And like, even though the Hawthornes are portrayed as these hot sexy god-like bois who make women loose their minds I NEVER ever felt it
(probably cuz I'm gay—)
But my point is, with certain charectors like - Kenji Kishmoto, Aaron Warner, Kaz Brekker, Percy Jackson, Cardan Greenbriar, Malini (from da jasmine throne), alex claremont-diaz, Lord Thyco you can like FEEL the aura, the 'hot' aura
Like their PERSONALITIES contribute to the hotness.
• Kenji's obsession with tangled, his ability to calm people, his goofiness, him genuinely giving a fuck abt people, not being a Gale Hawthorne, and his obsession for Nazeera, his willingness to sacrifice himself for his friends
• Aaron's fashion sense, his willingness to burn the world for her, to wait for her, helping her become powerful, helping her find herself i.e re-discover her past, and eating a cookie with a knife and fork ; ‘Come back here’ ‘Home’, ‘lyhfml’
• Kaz Brekker ripping a guy's eye out for his girl, finding her parents for her, freeing her from her indenture and her sexual trauma, wanting to bottle up her laugh and get drunk on it, his crazy revenge plans, ‘I would've come for you’, dropping a guy from a tower for objectifying women.
• Percy simping for Annabeth and jumping into tartarus with her and almost dying for her, respecting his mom, having a loveable persona, standing up to the gods, messing with the gods, being sarcastic and a great leader.
•Cardan Greenbriar begging Jude to come back to him and allowing her to murder/attempt to murder him again and again and making her the queen of Elfhelm so she feels one with the magic
• Princess Malini of Parijatdvipada helping her girlfriend find herself, making her remember her childhood, save her people and her culture, re-discover her magic, establish a relationship with her brother, making her truly HAPPY and WHOLE again, Refusing to burn on that pyre
•Alex claremont-diaz giving his boyfriend the strength to truly be himself, helping him ; LIKE actually doing wonders for his man, gives him the courage to come out to his family, is actually there for henry (the boyfriend) whenever he needs him, goes after Henry and their relationship, the Texas campaign—
• Lord Thyco accepting his boyfriend, showing him he's not a burden but a blessing, bringing out the best in him, helping his boyfriend and his bestfriend by not letting them die on the streets
But with the Hawthornes it's like, you're supposed to think they're hot, end of story.
Why are they hot?
Idk
The only hawthorne I actually like is Grayson, because he reminds me of Henry from red white and royal blue.
I read the whole series for him and I don't think he and Lyra should be a thing
He should be gay. Chilling somewhere FAAARRR away from the rest of the Hawthornes. With his boyfriend.
End. Of. Story.
Like but the rest of the Hawthornes are like
Jameson → ick personified
Xander → Random asf (scones? Jlb, ik you were trynna be different, just give the man a cookie—)
Nash → Don't. Get. Me. Started.
The rest of the charectors I stated as examples for hot? They had charector development, they helped their s/o-s grow with them.
I don't think the Hawthornes really did that.
And they have potential, with nash being a cowboy, Jameson loving mysteries and whatnot but it's not well executed.
Don't tell me that it's a mystery puzzle kinda book, you can't have best of both worlds.
Again, all the charectors I stated above are from action packed fun books and they have great personality.
Also shout out to Ravi Singh from a good girl's guide to murder. He has an amazing personality.

THE TRAIN BACK TO TWELVE - FINAL CHAPTER
(Peeta)
"You can come out now."
Katniss enters our bedroom, but I keep focused on the portrait I'm currently working on. Reese Donner, one of my closest friends, lost the night of the bombing.
"Are you sure it's safe?" I ask, taking a quick glance at her. "What did she want anyway?"
"It 's… private."
"I thought you and I had no secrets anymore." I say placing the book and my pencil on the nightstand. "What is that?" I say pointing to her balled hand. She's holding something, but I only catch a glimpse of orange fabric.
"Nothing." She says, hiding it behind her back.
I've got a two second head start before she realizes what I'm doing, and she goes running down the stairs. She's faster than me, and I would probably lose her, if Buttercup wasn't such a team player and jumped in front of her.
"Let me see that!" I ask, as I grab her waist behind her, and lift her in the air like a flour sack.
"No, Peeta, please don't!"
Buttercup tries to join whatever game he thinks we're playing and we end up falling to the couch, with me on top of her. Her hand is still closed on a tight fist and I encircle it with my own.
"I'm stronger than you."
"Peeta, trust me! You'll like it better in different circumstances!"
I let go of her hand and a look of relief floods her face.
"Can you get off of me, now?"
"That…" I say as I lean down towards her lips "...will take a great deal of convincing."
I'm about to kiss her when we're interrupted by a rap at the door.
"Peeta! PEETA!"
When I open the door, Thom comes inside, followed by Delly. He looks flustered and short of breath, as if he ran all the way from camp to Victor's village.
"We need… a toasting bread…" he says, between gasps of air, still clutching his side.
"Damn it Delly, I told you not to spring things on me! I need at least two hours for a half decent toasting bread!"
Thom starts shaking his head but he's still out of breath, so Delly explains.
"No, no, no! It's not for us!"
"Ray Thompson… '' Thom continues " …he caugh Fern… coming out of Cyrus' tent and he's making them toast. We don't have two hours, he might kill him before then. We'll take whatever you have lying around. "
I take the only bread I have, half a loaf, still on the kitchen table. It's leftovers from breakfast but at least it's fresh.
"Thank you!" Thom says before taking the bread on one hand, Delly's hand in the other and sprinting down the road.
"Full disclosure…" I say, as I watch them go down the lane "... I thought life in Twelve would be far less eventful. "
Katniss smiles and takes my hand.
"At least we're not in the middle of it. It feels nice to be on the sidelines for a change, don't you think?"
-------
-Cyrus and Fern toast, but she's way more pissed than him, because now she can't move with her parents and brothers to the new house and has to wait a couple more months. Cyrus ends up becoming the head peacekeeper for District Twelve. He and Thom still take a yearly camping trip to the bunker every year.
-Bristel Meyers leaves the district with Max (one of the bunker's peacekeepers) and they relocate to District two.
-Angie Smoak starts a school with the kids, and Katniss ends up assisting her with that. Angie teaches English and Basic math, and Katniss takes them on the afternoons for surviving skills and nature exploring. Angie and Jack Norbert surprise everyone when they toast by the fire, the night of the first harvest festival, because no one really knew they were dating. Except for Thom of course, because Thom knows EVERYTHING.
- Peeta and Katniss toast in private, at the lake, one sumer afternoon. Delly is pissed at them for a week. Peeta opens up Mellark's bakery again. He makes a wood sign to hang at the front door and on one side it says Mellark's bakery, and on the backside it says Everdeen's bakery. Only he and Katniss are knowledgeable of this.
-by the end of the Summer, new residents arrive, including the Hawthornes (minus Gale). All red armbands are finally back in the district.
- the houses are finished by the begining of December, the same week of Delly's nineteenth birthday. Thom wants to toast that same night, but Delly makes him wait two more weeks because now she's warmed up to the idea of a winter wedding. They end up getting married by the end of the year, and three months later she is pregnant with their first child.

Reaping day was one of your least favorite days. It signaled the beginnings of the last days for 23 children and made your insides twist with guilt and sadness. The reaping started at one and it was currently eight in the morning. With a sigh, you got up out of bed and made your way into your son, Bennett's room.
"Mama!" Bennett said. "You're awake!"
"Good morning Benny!" You said as you picked him up and held him close. "Ready for some breakfast?"
"Yeah!"
You took Benny to the kitchen to make him breakfast. He was chowing down and you watched him over your cup of tea, sadness etched on your face. When he was done and asked for more, you gave your son a smile and put more food on his plate. There was no food in front of you, but you would eat later on the train if your stomach agreed to it.
"Mama! I'm done," Benny called out.
"Good job, baby. Now let's get you cleaned up before we go out."
"Okay." Bennett helped you put away the dishes before letting you help bathe and clothe him. He could tell that your mood was off and once you were done brushing his dark hair back, he turned to look at you.
"What's wrong, Mommy?" Bennett asked you.
"Do you remember what I had told you about today?"
"Is it the reading?"
"Reaping, baby. Today's the Reaping."
"Reaping," Bennett said. "What's a reaping?"
"The reaping is when one boy and girl are chosen to fight in The Hunger Games. It is also the day I have to leave for a little while," you said.
"To the Capitol?"
"Yes."
"Can I go with you?"
"No, baby. You can't. Not this time."
Bennett was very clearly upset and you sat down on the floor and brought him into your lap.
"Why not?"
"I know that you've been to the Capitol before, but you can't go with me when I leave for the Games. You're too big and it's not allowed. But I'll be back before you know it, okay?"
"Okay," Benny said with a sniff.
"You're going to stay with Hazelle while I'm gone. I won't be gone for long, I promise."
You kissed the top of his head and held him while he calmed down. Once his eyes were free of tears, the two of you got up and left the house. You were required to be on stage while the Reaping was taking place and since the citizens of the Capitol absolutely adored Bennett and he wasn't old enough to be reaped yet, he was allowed on stage with you. But before you went to the Justice Building, you stopped at the Hawthorne house.
Bennett's hand was in yours as you knocked on their front door. He was more excited now, having realized that staying with the Hawthorne's meant being able to play with his best friend, Posy. When Hazelle opened the door, you said hello and gave her a smile that didn't really reach your eyes.
"Hey, sweetheart," Hazelle said. "Come in."
"Thank you."
"Where's Posy?" Bennett asked Hazelle.
"Benny," you scolded. "You didn't even say hello yet."
"Hi, godmama. Where's Posy?"
Hazelle just laughed and pointed to the back. "She's in the backyard with her brothers."
"Thank you!" Bennett took off and you watched him go.
"Don't get too dirty! I can't get you another bath today!"
Bennett ignored you and you shook your head.
"Come here, sweetheart. How are you doing?"
"I should be asking you that," you said. "Where's Gale?"
"Out with Katniss I'm assuming. He'll be back in time, don't worry."
"Thank you for watching Bennett again. I appreciate it, I really do."
"Of course. The two of you are a part of this family." Hazelle took your hand and squeezed it.
"I brought some food. There's more back in the village if you need it and you know where I keep my money. Use what you need and stay in the house if you'd like." You glanced at the clock on the wall. "Benny and I should get going. I was told that I'm being interviewed before the reaping."
"Alright."
You called for Bennett and both he and Posy came running inside.
"Hi auntie!" Posy yelled, grabbing onto your leg. You picked her up and hugged her tightly.
"Posy! Did you have fun playing with Bennett?"
"Oh yeah! We picked some flowers, see?"
There were flowers in both kids' hair and dirt all over Bennett's hands.
"I didn't get too dirty, mama. Just my hands!"
"Let's go wash those hands. Don't want to get mom all dirty, do we?" Hazelle took Bennett to wash his hands and when he was clean, you kissed the kids goodbye and gave Hazelle a hug.
"I'll see you after the Reaping," you said.
"See you later, sweetheart."
It didn't take long to get to the Justice building and the makeup crews were eagerly awaiting your arrival. They did your makeup quickly all while doting on Benny. After they were done with you, you were put in front of some cameras.
"Hello, Sunshine! How are you and little Bennett doing this fine morning?" Caesar Flickerman said cheerfully.
"Caesar! We're doing great, how are you?" You said with a giant smile on your face.
"Hi!" Benny yelled. He pointed at Caesar. "I like your hair, it's so blue."
"Do you like blue, Bennett?" Bennett nodded furiously.
"It's his favorite," you said with a laugh.
"It's mine too. Now, you've been a Victor for about eight years now. How's the life been treating you and Benny?"
"Oh, it's been wonderful. I can't express my gratitude to the Capitol enough for helping us. Especially after-" You took a breath. "After my husband died."
"The anniversary just happened, didn't it?"
"About 2 months ago. I miss him everyday."
"How's Bennett doing?" There was a frown on Caesar's face. "Does he know about his father?"
"He knows what he looks like. Sometimes he'll ask why he doesn't have a dad and the other kids do. It's hard, being a single mom, but I have people who are basically family who help me out a lot."
"Oh? Like who?"
"Benny's godmother, Hazelle, is a life saver. She helps take care of him when I can't and I help her with her kids. She's family to us."
Benny was starting to get fidgety and Caesar let out a chuckle.
"I'm going to let the two of you go. We'll see you soon, Sunshine!"
"See you soon, Caesar. Say bye, Benny." You and Benny blew a kiss to Cesar and waved goodbye until the cameras shut down.
"Mama, can we go now?"
"We have to sit for a little bit, but then you'll be able to play with Posy all day long."
"Yay, Posy!"
You heard the makeup crew fawning over Bennett and then the telltale sound of high heels. Turning, you saw Effie Trinket walking towards you. She called your name and you smiled.
"Hey, Effie," you said. You kissed each other's cheeks.
"Pretty hair!" Bennett said.
"Thank you." Effie cooed over Bennett, letting him touch her poofy shoulders. While they were doing that, you saw Haymitch make his way into the Justice Building. He was clearly intoxicated and didn't notice you or Effie at all.
"Effie, we'll see you later. It's almost time and we should go."
"Of course! I'll see you on the train."
You and Bennett walk to your seats, you sitting next to Haymitch. People were still walking in and you scanned the crowd. Two of these kids would soon take a one-way trip to the Capitol and it hurt you to keep a smile on your face. Looking at Haymitch, you knew why he drank himself half to death everyday but you didn't have the freedom. You had to keep up your cheerful and sunny attitude in order to keep Bennett and everyone else you cared for alive.
Once all of the children were present and accounted for, Effie came onto the stage. The video President Snow had made was put on every screen and when that was over, Effie officially started the Reaping.
"Ladies first," Effie said. After some contemplation, Effie picked a name out of the bowl.
"Primrose Everdeen."
You felt your heart sink. You knew Prim and it hurt to have a twelve year old get their name picked. Looking into the crowd, you saw many different emotions. Gale had a look of horror on his face, as well as Hazelle. Carine, Prim's mom, was in shock and you couldn't blame her. Prim started to walk towards the stage and that was when you saw Katniss.
"Prim? Prim!" Katniss was stopped by peacekeepers and Prim had turned to look at her sister.
"I volunteer! I volunteer as Tribute," Katniss said, shoving one of the peacekeepers away.
Your eyes widened, not expecting that. Throughout your years of living and of being a Victor, you had never seen a volunteer from District 12. Katniss walked up onto the stage as Gale carried a distraught Prim to her mother. After everyone had quieted down, Effie drew the boy who would be participating.
"Peeta Mellark."
Peeta came up to the stage and he shook hands with Katniss.
"Happy Hunger Games. And may the odds be ever in your favor."

Chapter 2: I think I know that man
[Earth, 1880]
'Android drivers?' Trix thought to herself as she glanced at the robot-slash-human with a plug on its nape. It reminded Trix The Matrix movie which her Dad forced her to watch when she was seven.
Trix is still processing how this universe had a floating car in the year 1880. She looked around the "car" they were in. The interior looks more like a crossover between an airplane and spaceships that she had seen in the movies. There are lots of buttons, levers, and switches.
'I can never get a driver's license in this place' she thought to herself.
"Oh, I almost forgot. Hawthorne, prepare the glasshouse for an afternoon tea."
"Yes, sir." She looked at the deiner who is now twisting his wrist communication thingy and said, "Hawthorne to Walter, please prepare the glass house for an afternoon tea."
Trix felt airsick so she decided to distract herself by talking. "Are you rich?" She asked her companion.
"No, I'm Edel. Rich is my friend." He said it in an FYI way. Trix could not decode if he is joking.
"I mean, do you have a lot of cash, you know, something to buy stuff?" She just decided to rephrase the question.
"Oh! You mean to ask if I am bearer of wealth!" He looked genuinely surprised and somehow delighted that he git what she was saying.
"O..kay, let's go with that. Are you wealthy?"
"I suppose I am. My family bears wealth more than any from the population in this town."
She wanted to ask more questions but the car-slash-plane-slash-spaceship slowed down and halted after a few minutes.
Hawthorne got off and opened her side of the door. Trix got off as quick as she could when Hawthorne offered his hand to help her get off the car so sudden that she did not see it coming until the last minute
"Madam--"
"Shi--"
She tried to dodge the deiner's hand so she got off balance. Hawthorne reached for her quickly but Edel got to hold her first since he is just behind her waiting for her to get off. Edel held her shoulders to regain her balance but she will never recover from the embarrassment. After she realized how close they are, she stepped away from Edel and tried fixing her clothes to avoid eye contact.
"Please accept my apologies, madam." Hawthorne said with sincerity.
"It's okay, H. No biggie. Please call me Trix."
"I did not understand, but I will call you Miss Trix."
Edel cleared his throat. "Must we talk in a place where I could sit comfortably?"
"My apology, sir Edelweiss." The deiner bowed and walked away towards the stairs.
Tumblr media
Trix became aware of the huge building in front of her. "Where are we? Is this the city hall or something?"
"Welcome to my house."
She stared and thought 'Flying car and now a ridiculously big house, what else could surprise me today?'
"Trix, are you still with us?" Edel's voice pulled her back to this reality she's in.
"Uh, yeah. Uh," she cleared her throat, "Uhm, it's YOUR house? Just yours?" She walked alongside him into the big house. Hawthorne walked behind them.
She looked around to satisfy her curiosity. The ceiling is too high, she can't see what it was made of. The walls, she is not sure what stone it was made of. Marble, perhaps? It looks like a pile of thousands of small stones in the same size but in different colours. A music was playing in the whole house. She wondered what piece or whose piece is that. Did Mozart existed here? She isn't sure about it.
Edel answered her question with hesitation, "I guess. Yeah. I live alone. I used to have an adopted brother living here with me but he's gone now."
"I'm so sorry to hear that." She looked at Edel. She knew how much it hurts losing a family.
"He lived and died while doing what he love the most so I guess he died happy." Trix is not sure if he stared at her or he was just spacing out and remembering his brother. "Anyway, we're here."
Tumblr media
Edel opened a glass door. Trix got blinded by the light that she doesn't know if it was indoor or outdoor. When her eyes had adjusted to the brightness, she saw a pathway to the garden inside and outside of the glass walls and on some part of the glass roof has plant vines hanging.
Tumblr media
"It's so beautiful." She uttered
They walked towards the table in the middle of Trix could not put a word on what it is.
She looked at the floating tray pushed by Hawthorne and saw cakes, sandwiches, and fruits placed on a layered porcelain. Everything looks delicious that she realised how hungry she is at the moment. Hawthorne gave her a piece of cloth for her to cover her thighs while sitting. She uttered a quick "thank you" after she had seated.
"What do you put in your tea, Miss Trix?" Hawthorne asked her politely.
"It's alright, I can make my own tea. Thank you." Trix is getting uncomfortable with how polite the deiner is.
"We can manage from here, Thorne. Please leave. I'll call you when I need you." Edel told the deiner just like sensing how uncomfortable she is.
"Yes, sir." The deiner left them. As soon as Hawthorne left the room, Edel's face became serious.
"Trix, you shouldn't tell anyone you're not from this universe." Edel told her as if he is almost whispering.
Trix was surprised that Edel actually knew and believed her. She was about to say something but he continued.
"This is dangerous. If people here found out that other universes exist, it could cause chaos in this universe. Given how advanced our tech is, they might even try to look for a way to get to the other universes and mess up."
"Wait, so you believe me?"
"Yes. I knew from the beginning."
"How?"
"My brother used to be the traveller. Whenever my brother cross to the other world, I would accompany him to the gate, Anita's scarf shop. Mind you, he cannot cross if there are people in both universes' scarf shop. So I just have to stay outside. I knew he have crossed the universe when the shop's sign does a weird thing."
"What weird thing?"
"It changes its letters into unreadable characters. And I'm the only one who can see it. I have tried showing it to my friends and they laughed and said I manipulated the memory."
Trix stared at him with a confused face.
"Let me show you." Edel twist and press his wrist communication device then placed his arm on the desk, palm up. The device emitted a light and show a feedback of his perspective when the shop changes its sign into different characters. Trix noticed people passing by the shop not showing any sign that they can see what was happening.
"Woah, there are lots of people passing by, only you noticed that?"
"Surprisingly, yes."
"What happened? To your brother, I mean."
"He died in another world." She can see the pain in his eyes so she made a mental note not to ask anything about his brother. She tried to ask questions that sounds mundane.
"Hey, I heard Hawthorne called you Edelwiess Is that your whole name?" (ay-duhl-vice")
"No, it's just my first name. My adopted brother named me after a flower that he saw from another world." Just like that, the topic she's trying to avoid looped its way back in the conversation.
"He named you? How old exactly was your brother?"
"He was adopted by my father when dad was not married to my mom yet, that explains why he's way too old. I think he was twenty-one when I was born."
"Out of curiosity, is it okay if I'll ask if I could see him? Like, a photo of him."
"Sure, I have all of our memories here." He took off his-- she decided to call it wrist phone, and touched some buttons and placed it on the table. It started casting light to her left and generating holographic video.
"He was the one who developed this technology." Edel proudly told her. She didn't mind the gloat as she was busy staring at the video.
It's all in Edel's point of view so it started when he opened the door to a place that has a grand piano. There was a man playing a familiar sound. The place was surrounded by plants and flying insects with lights, 'Oh, fireflies! They have fireflies here!' she thought to herself. She brought back her focus to the thing they were watching.
"This is Liebastraum number three by Franz Liszt." The man said without stopping nor facing Edel. Trix made a wild guess that he learned it in her world
"I love that! What does Liebastraum means?"
A back of a man playing the piano was wearing white shirt. He heard a child's voice saying, "Brother, can you teach me that piece? Who composed that?"
"Love Dream" the man said while playing the most complicated part of the piece.
"What does Love mean??" young Edel innocently asked.
The man laughed, "I think someday you'll know, young man."
Edel went to scoot beside his older brother and pressed a key. Trix thought he was going to just mess with the note but surprisingly Edel had already memorized the piece.
"Edel, my deiner, Walter, will be here for you, you can hire your own deiner when you're old enough to decide for yourself." The man's tone sounds serious but as a young boy, Edel did not get what that was all about.
Changing the topic unintentionally, Edel was thrilled to memorize the piece after the first time hearing it, he asked, "Am I doing it right?"
"Yes, you are."
Edel looked up to face his brother. The man looked at Edel looking proud of the child's perfect pitch.
The man said "Listen, kid. I will be gone for a very long time. I need you to be brave and strong."
Trix's world just stopped as she seems to be staring at her young and long dead father saying his same last words to her.
