Finally got round to watching goncharov and just like I suspected it's racist and sexist and excuse me for not being impressed with the queer baiting. Idc if it was the 70s why are we still idolizing something so problematic today

Why the fuck is Tumblr praising a movie by FAMED misogynist Martin Scorsese? The man worked with Harvey Weistein and DEFENDED Roman Polansky, an alleged child rapist. And I'm sure the apple DOES NOT fall far from the tree.
No matter how we try, we can't "Hatsume Miku made Goncharov (1973)" our way out of this. His grubby fingerprints are all over the film. And I thought we were feminists here on tumblr dot com. 😕 As such, I cannot watch Goncharov (1973) in good faith anymore.

So I watched Goncharov (1973) after seeing a few posts about joe and, can I say, he did not disappoint! I love unhinged quirky characters like this so I was already expecting to like him, but I wasn’t expecting how deep and interesting his character actually was and how much was shown in such a (relatively) short amount of screen time.

In these trying times I suggest we all retreat to the one thing that will keep us strong until the worst is to pass (ao3 comes back).
Let us join braincells and watch the greatest movie of all time, goncharov

I think the Goncharov Renaissance actually has a lot to do with the fact that every first season of any new tv show comes with the all-encompassing dread that it might not get renewed unless it's the most watched, the fastest binged, the most fan engagement, the biggest renewal campaign, the- and so on and so forth. At this point being a fan of something means you can't just fully enjoy it - you have to actively fear for it and act accordingly so that it might get to continue and that's just. Exhausting.
Any fan discussion, any art, even the shitposts, are suddenly about the engagement they generate for the big corporations. Fandom is basically doing unpaid work in advertising so we might get fucking scraps in return. It's so exhausting.
And suddenly there's Goncharov! A film from the 70s that a lot of people are very familiar with - but for a lot of us it might as well be brand new! And the hype is back but there's no endgoal. We can just enjoy the art for the art's sake. It's a breath of fresh air. Which is ironic considering how much fucking cigarette smoke floats through that film.

[image of a tag that reads: #I think I.M. Foreman should show up in the last episode]
not tagging this person bc i can't think of a way to say this that isn't snarky but! two problems with this!
im foreman has already shown up in dr who in a book which is more goncharov than most people can really handle
there's not gonna be a 'last episode'. we tried that already and it didn't stick. what happened instead is that the fans went off and started writing their own stories so aggressively some of them became canon.

Can’t buy Goncharov (1973) as a Scorsese joint, because that would make it predate or replace Mean Streets and y’alls recreations are simply too high-budget for that
What y’all actually want is a Coppola picture

hm i think it’s time we all sit down and reckon with the fact that goncharov is actually not very good?
like everyone is gagging over this movie but COMPLETELY ignoring the misogyny that is present throughout? can we talk about how it is so clearly copying brutal tales of chivalry without actually taking time to dissect the themes? it’s a copy of a copy. not only is the script mediocre at best (cannot believe we are passing over andrey saying “whoa, mamma mia cunt” to sofia’s face) but the boat scene is clearly nothing more than titillation, not a treatise on death and time or whatever tumblr seems to think. it is nothing but a hollow vessel of a film. it reflects but adds nothing of substance.
(not to MENTION the estonian art film adaptation actually has sofia and katya kiss during the poker scene so my only guess is that everyone is going nuts over scorsese’s film because the two white guys are shippable)

I know we’re all being Super Normal rn about “Goncharov” (1973) but who else on here has hyperfixated on the original novel?? I first read it a couple years ago - my Modern Russian Lit prof must have clocked my ~repressed bisexual swag~ HARD because she pulled me aside after our second class of the semester, slipped this in my hand, and told me I’d relate to Katya:
Tumblr media
I s2g the book permanently rewired my brain. Within two months I had a platinum blonde dye job à la Katya (yikes) and a girlfriend (fuck yeah) so as a whole I guess I owe my prof thanks. You’re a real one, Dr. Borden.

it's absolutely wild that everyone on here is pushing goncharov, of all movies. goncharov is full of queerbaiting and lesbophobia (katya and sofia's relationship is obviously not taken seriously and their scenes together are 100% in the male gaze), classism (the way the narrative handles ice pick joe), and worst of all it glorifies organized crime.
can you people think critically for once in your lives?

"Goncharov (1973) can never be canceled, it's not a real movie."
That's not how this works. We don't cancel Goncharov, we cancel Martin Scorsese.
Sorry to Scorsese in 3 weeks lmaooooo.

Old poster idea from the cancelled Goncharov sequel which was made in 1994. As you can see, Tarantino signed the poster (top right). Tarantino was relatively new to directing at the time but was still chosen to make the sequel to this cult classic.

Ya know, it’s so funny seeing the re-emergence of Goncharov. I showed my mom and she was stunned before telling me that my dad took her to see it in the cinema on their anniversary and she resonated so hard with Katya.
This might be a hellsite, but you helped my mom rekindle her love for this movie so thank you

Anyone remember when Michael Bay announced he wanted to remake Goncharov in like 2009?
