Milky Way

Taken in Leo Carrillo State Beach in Malibu, California

My first attempt at stitching multiple shots together. A bit of an imperfection in one area but not bad for a first try.

Anyway, here is part of the core of the Milky Way! For a few months of the year the core is visible over California. In areas with low light pollution (like where this was taken) you can easily make it out with the naked eye!

Water and its strange relationship with light. Thinking back to a few heady hours exploring the artistic potential in both movement and stillness, in both distortion and reflection. It was far too cold to swim, but my thoughts did anyway.

Immensely proud of this work. 2022 taught me to prioritise intentionality in my photography, and part of that has been to take stock of what subjects capture my attention. The shapes and lines and symmetries of the natural world stood out to me, much more than I would have thought, and I've been allowing myself to follow that with curiosity. These images are an indulgence of that curiosity, experiments in reproducing the often abstract geometry that bewitches me when I'm by the water.

Pomarine Jaeger (Stercorarius pomarinus)

A little bit of a different style image! The slightly smaller bird with the dark head is the Jaeger. They’re sometimes referred to as the pirates of the sea. They’ll follow other birds around and bully the food they’ve got from them for an easy meal! In this case the seagull wasn’t going to have that.

Silvia has been a friend for a while now. I met her a few years ago and I just love her cute and innocent look in photos. We took these photos a few weeks ago when we were heading to the beach. It was a really hot day. We stopped for gas and she really wanted some ice cream!
