Quechuavis van Els et al., 2023 (new genus)
Tumblr media
(An individual of Quechuavis decussata, photographed by christian_nunes, under CC BY-NC 4.0)
Meaning of name: Quechuavis = Quechua bird [in Latin]
Species included: Q. decussata (Tschudi's nightjar, type species, previously in Systellura)
Age: Holocene (Meghalayan), extant
Where found: Arid, open habitats in western Peru and northern Chile
Notes: Quechuavis decussata is a nightjar, a group of nocturnal, insect-eating birds. Nightjars typically spend the day camouflaged against the ground and use their wide mouths to capture flying insects at night. The Tschudi's nightjar was formerly considered a subspecies of the band-winged nightjar (Systellura longirostris), and even after being recognized as a separate species, has generally still been classified in the genus Systellura. However, genetic studies have shown that it is not closely related to members of the genus Systellura, nor does it appear to have any particularly close relatives among other South American nightjars. As a result, a new study reassigns the Tschudi's nightjar to a unique new genus.

Storm Hawks OC Challenge - January 2023!
Happy new year everyone! Hope everyone's had a good first few hours of 2023. I'm happy to announce that this month's bird challenge will be based on the Great-Eared Nightjar (Lyncornis macrotis)!
Tumblr media
Native to South and Southeast Asia, the great-eared nightjar makes its home in subtropical and lowland tropical forests. They're most active at dusk and nighttime, and have a distinctive tsiik! call. Great-Eeared Nightjars are the largest birds of the Caprimulgidae family.
The deadline this month is Thursday the 26th of January at 6pm GMT. As always, rules and extra images, including an optional colour palette are below the cut.
Minimum requirements for drawn entries to be put in the winner's vote are a name, occupation, the character's home/birth Terra and at least one paragraph (or about 100 words) of written backstory.
Minimum requirements for written (i.e. written dossiers without art, or mini-fics for the character) are 500 words including backstory and appearance. Feel free to make a mini-fic out of this challenge, I'll make sure to link it with the final collage as well.
Entrants who are part of the Storm Hawks discord server will have the chance of getting a custom role for the next month! If you’re not part of the discord server, please ask for an invite if you’re interested.
You're not expected to create a character from scratch for this challenge. If you've got an older character concept that's been collecting dust or that you'd like to take the opportunity to revamp, feel free! The goal of this challenge is to inspire people.
Make sure to tag me in your entries and also DM me with a link to your entry. Tumblr is not always reliable about notifications for this sort of thing, and I don't want to risk missing anyone's entries, so better safe than sorry.
The group collage of entries, and the winner's vote are opt-in. Participation of those parts of this challenge are not mandatory.
The winner of the vote will receive a free sketch piece of their character from me.

============= @boyahia ============= Nightjars are medium-sized nocturnal or crepuscular birds in the family Caprimulgidae, characterized by long wings, short legs and very short bills. They are sometimes called goatsuckers, due to the ancient folk tale that they sucked the milk from goats (the Latin for goatsucker is Caprimulgus), or bugeaters, due to their insectivore diet. Some New Worldspecies are called nighthawks. The English word 'nightjar' originally referred to the European nightjar. Nightjars are found around the world. They are mostly active in the late evening and early morning or at night, usually nest on the ground, and feed predominantly on moths and other large flying insects.
