Author’s note: Hiii! So this is my first shot at a short fic. Honestly guys, I SUCK at writing but here you go. The fic comes with a quick drawing I made about it. Anyways, enjoy!.
The clock on Aly’s wrist marked 6:30 AM exactly. Aly was staring at the numbers marked on her clock while walking towards the entrance of the military base she worked at for now. She could not remember the last time she felt exhausted, maybe since she finished school, these assignments at work reminded her of her sleep-deprived nights at college. But this was entirely different. Now people depended on her job, and that is why she tried even harder, she did not want to fail anyone.
It had almost been a month since she started working with a new task force, and she still was not completely ready for it. She understood perfectly the task assigned to her, the environment she was working in, the things she needed to do and the people she was working with. But for some reason this time was different. Aly felt she had more responsibility this time.
An alarm sounded. The clock now marked 7:00 AM exactly.
“AH MIERD-” Aly muttered to herself, as she began running to the entrance. She was so absorbed in her thoughts that spent half an hour by the base parking lot, just thinking.
As she was walking, or more like running, to the office she needed to be, she was cursing herself for spending too much time thinking nonsense instead of getting the job done, instead of getting where she was supposed to be 5 minutes ago.
“Why do I keep doing this?” she was thinking as she was walking on a long dark corridor inside the base. Apparently no one was there yet, or at least not a lot of people were there yet, which made her feel a little bit relieved.
After walking for a couple of seconds, she managed to get to the office where her meeting would take place. She stood in front of the door and placed a hand on the door knob and stared at it.
“What am I waiting for? Porque me pongo tan nerviosa cada vez que tengo una de estas juntas? Why can't I think only in English for once in my life!?” she cried to herself in her thoughts, still having her hand placed on the door knob without even trying to turn it to open the door.
“If i keep being this clumsy and arriving this late the cap-” her thoughts were interrupted by someone actually opening the door from the other side. She almost fell but she regained her composure and looked in front of her. There was a man standing in front of her, wearing a uniform and looking right at her with a confused look in his eyes.
“Good morning Aly, just in time.” he said while still looking very confused as to why she was like that. “... is everything okay?” Captain Arjun said to her in a low tone, apparently he did not want the other guests to know if she was in any kind of trouble.
Aly looked at the Captain, pretty embarrassed of what happened at the time. She stood straight and greeted him.
“I am so sorry for being late.” she muttered to him. Captain Arjun just nodded and stepped aside so she could go into the office.
It was not a big meeting like it usually was. There were only three other people besides Arjun and Aly, and she could recognize all of them.
“Good morning” She said to everyone in the room, while looking around the office.
“Good morning Aly” Yuvraj exclaimed in a cheerful tone, looking at her and then turning his sight back to some papers he was reading before.
“Hey Aly, late again huh?” This time Aditya was the one to speak. He had one hand resting on his face while looking at Aly. He smirked and wanted to laugh. Aly blushed at the comment and opened her eyes while looking at him, trying to tell him to shut up. Aditya was about to say something when he suddenly felt a stare from someone standing in front of him, on the right side. Captain Arjun did not need to say a word to his fellow soldiers in order to make them understand when was enough and when they should get their shit together. Aditya suddenly straightened up on his seat and began to read some papers as well.
Aly sighed at this and turned her face only to see Captain Price, sitting down by the end of the table. His arms crossed, as wanting to say he was ready to get this meeting over with.
She then said a weak good morning to the Captain. He just turned his eyes to her, nodded, and turned back to look at the screen’s direction. He was always like that, every day. And, for some reason, this bothered her so much. She thought it was something personal. She knew she almost botched an operation and she had make some mistakes in previous missions they had been working together, along with the other three Indian army soldiers, but she tried her best.
She remembers the time she failed to give specific locations on time on the past mission, she knew it was her fault entirely. She was slow, but she had so much on her plate at that time, that she couldn’t get everything done in time. She knew she was crucial to the mission, and that she should have organized herself better, but these things happened. After the mission, Captain Price said nothing. At least to her. But she knew he told Captain Arjun about what happened, and she knew he defended her.
For the past couple of weeks knowing the Para Trio, she felt she was growing closer and closer to them. All of them were nice and respectful towards her from the beginning. She trusted and relied on Captain Arjun for every mission, he was someone she could look up to. Yuvraj and Aditya were one of the closest friends she had so far while working at this task force. They sometimes got into a lot of trouble. Sometimes.
A chair was empty between Captain Price and Aditya, so Aly grabbed the chair and sat on it. She proceeded to open her computer in order to pull out some files she needed for the meeting.
While working on her things, she could feel Aditya’s stare at her.
“What is wrong with him? Why is he looking at me like that?” she thought to herself while still keeping her sight on her computer screen, trying to search for the files she needed.
She decided to ignore him and turn her attention to Captain Arjun, who was ready to begin with the debriefing.
*
The clock at the wall on the office marked the time, it was 9:00 AM. The whole team was so focused on the debriefing that nobody even had time to look that 2 hours have passed. Arjun finished with the debrief and dismissed everyone.
Aly proceeded to walk to her office to work on the assignments for the next mission, she was determined to be perfect this time, there was no room for errors. After all, she did not want to let anyone down this time.
While still lost in her thoughts, she opened the door to her office and stood on the entrance for a while. She kept walking and abruptly sat on her chair. She turned herself around to her computer looking at the whole desk. Her office was clean and neat, she had only the necessary and tried to keep her workplace as organized as possible.
She sighed and focused her attention on her computer, turning on the screen. While she was waiting for her computer to start, she looked at the small picture frame next to her second monitor. It was a picture of her cat, Tito. She took a look at it, while having her head on her hand, and smiled. If something made her smile that was absolutely her cat Tito, or honestly any cat or dog.
The desk in her office faced a small window where she could see the corridor. She fixed her sight on the window for a while, noticing a couple of men going out of another of the offices and standing by the corridor. She stopped moving the mouse with her hand and focused totally on the men standing there.
There was Captain Price with two other members of Task Force 141, of course she couldn't listen to what they were saying, but it seemed like it was a casual talk.
Her sight was focused on that crew, specifically on the Captain, but she wouldn't admit it. She was staring at him, at the way he was talking, his form, everything. She couldn’t help herself but stare at him whenever he was around, she felt nervous, felt like she had to do everything perfectly. She asked herself why she felt like that around him.
A hand suddenly rested on her shoulder and she abruptly jumped from her chair.
“WHAT THE HECK!” she screamed almost falling to the floor, only to see Aditya laughing at her.
“Dios mio, what is wrong with you!?” She screamed at the youngest of the Indian armed forces soldiers.
“Nothing, I was standing here for the past 3 minutes and you didn't even bother to turn around and say hi to me, so i had to come to you and pat your shoulder” he said casually while taking a seat on a couch placed on the left side of the office.
“You could have at least said Hello, you know?” she said while crossing her arms, standing in front of him, but glancing outside of the window, where the Captain was.
Aditya looked at her and smiled, “Well even if i had said Hello, you would have jumped as well, you were way too focused staring at the Captain for you to notice anything anyways.”
She suddenly felt her cheeks burn and turned to look at him and then turned around and took a seat on her desk chair, “I do not know what you are talking about, i was just thinking about the assignment.” She began to pretend to be working on the computer.
There was an awkward silence, only the sound from the computer could be heard.
“You are not even working on anything right now, as a matter of fact you are staring at your desktop background” he teased her, with a smile on his face.
“I am still thinking, okay?! I don't know why you would even say that.” she said in a lower tone, pretending to be cool about it. Like she didn't care at all at the fact that he already noticed that about her.
He crossed his arms and lay down on the couch.
“Are you sure? Then why do you always look so nervous in those specific meetings? Why do you always act nervous around him? I have known you not long ago, but I know you enough to say there is something going on there.” he said while turning his head to see her while smirking.
She couldn't believe she was being so obvious about it, she was trying to deny it to herself, because she had to be professional. She felt too embarrassed to even say something. Although she knew Aditya liked to tease her.
“Besides, remember that day that while we were in the break room and you got so nervous that you dropped your drink when we asked what you would do if you were alone in a room with Pr-” Then he felt Aly’s hands on his shoulder trying to grab him to stand up.
“Aditya, I think Captain Arjun needs you.” She said while grabbing him by his arm and walking with him towards the office door.
“What?, he left like an hour ago and besides how do you-” before he could even finish what he was about to say, he noticed he was already outside the office, he turned around and saw Aly standing by the door with it almost half closed.
“Si si, yo también te quiero, good night!” and she closed the door. She walked fast to her couch and lay down. Since she felt so embarrassed that someone already noticed, she didn't want to see anyone right now.
She closed her eyes and thought how would people react if they knew, it was so unprofessional and apparently the Captain didn't even know her name. He had never talked to her directly, it was always just during meetings or through Captain Arjun. She never heard him pronouncing her name.
Why would she bother feeling like this for someone who doesn’t even care about what her name was?. Now she was more embarrassed than before.
The door quickly opened again, almost slamming the door open.
“Just wanted to let you know you are too young for him anyways, okay bye!” Aditya said quickly, half laughing, before he closed the door again and left her in the office.
Aly couldn’t believe that he said that so loud, that maybe someone else heard that too. She swore that tomorrow she will get payback for that. Standing up and going to her computer again, she decided to begin to work and was more determined than ever to finish her tasks perfectly by the end of the day.
Work always helped her to get her mind off of things.
*
Complete silence filled the entire base. The building was pitch black and basically empty, by almost the end of the corridor on the second floor, Aly’s office could be seen, as it was the only room apparently with the lights on.
Another click and she was done, she was finally done with the assignments, she was able to understand the foreigners’ algorithms, decrypt the cyphers and finally found their location, all of it without leaving a trace. She was proud of herself although this wasn’t her first job in this type of situation, but she felt especially proud this time. “Of course...” she muttered to herself. She knew deep inside she was proud and excited because it was a task assigned by Captain Arjun and him.
Aly began to turn down everything and gathering up her stuff in order to leave. Before turning off the lights, she checked her phone. 11:30 PM.
“Wow, I lost track of time, it's almost midnight.” she said while closing the door behind her and walking towards the exit of the building. She kept walking until she reached the parking lot.
She was trying to get the keys of her car that were deep down a pocket on her purse when suddenly, she felt something rubbing on her left leg.
“Huh? Oh my god, Hi!” she said happily while turning to see the small calico cat that was meowing and rubbing on her leg. Apparently it was a friendly cat, and that was Aly’s main weakness.
She proceeded to lean down to the floor in order to pet the cat, which seemed to enjoy it.
“Who are you kitty? What are you doing here?” She asked the cat and only received a purr in return, of course. She thought to herself that this was unusual. She has been here for a while and never saw a cat, and on top of all, it was a well-groomed, friendly cat.
“Maybe someone abandoned it here…” Aly said sadly. She saw before how people just got rid of cats by dropping them off in random, far away places. This base was almost by exiting the city, so not a lot of cars or people passed by, let alone cats.
“Okay!” she happily said, grabbing the kitty and placing it on her arms, “You are coming with me, I am sure Tito will like you.” The cat didn't seem to care to be held like that, as a matter of fact, he liked it.
The doors of her car were unlocked and she was making space for the kitty at the back of the car. She didn't have many things there, but wanted to make the ride comfortable for the kitty.
She leaned down and took the cat once again to her arms. “I think I might name you… Chiquito.” She said while planting a kiss on the cat’s head.
Footsteps were heard behind her. But at the time she was to focused on the cat that didn’t even notice.
“That is quite a nice name, but he already has one”, Aly turned to look behind her and saw Captain Price standing just in front of her. She was quite surprised, she wasn’t expecting him there, at that time.
Then it hit her. She remembered what happened through the day and felt her cheeks burn once again, maybe even worse this time. Before she could even speak she felt the cat’s small legs kicking her away and jumping off of her arms.
She was surprised, maybe the cat felt uncomfortable around the Captain?
What she saw was even more surprising. Apparently the cat jumped off Aly’s arms just to land on Price’s arms instead. She was extremely confused at this point.
“Good evening” she said in a low, almost inaudible tone, “Uhm, is this-” she was suddenly interrupted by the Captain’s words.
“My cat? Yes.” he said while looking and petting the cat. He then turned to see her.
“Name’s Greg, I adopted him a couple of weeks ago”. Aly was thinking this had to be a joke. But no, the cat was pretty comfortable and seemed very loving towards the Captain. Never in a million years she would imagine the Captain would be adopting a pet, let alone a cat. She knew perfectly how cats were. Being a cat mom herself and volunteering every week at a shelter, she knew cats weren’t made for everyone due to their nature.
She started looking at the Captain and how he was acting towards Greg. He enjoyed petting him, and so did Greg. Without even thinking it she had a warm smile on her face. She hated to admit it but this scene made her fell harder for him.
“Do you have any cats of your own?” he said, interrupting Aly’s thoughts. “Uh, yes. His name is Tito, I adopted him a few years ago” she said while getting near the Captain and petting Greg.
“I see,” Price said while looking at her, “Try not to stay too late next time” he said while leaning down and setting Greg to the floor, then turned to face her.
“We need you well rested” while he was speaking, he softly placed a hand on her shoulder, making her flinch a little.
“I-I will try not to be Captain, i will try and finish early tomorrow.” she said softly trying to not seem like she was nervous.
He took his hand off her shoulder. “You can call me Price.” he said while getting a little bit closer to her, “or John, it's quite alright.”
She was getting very nervous, and at this point it was more than obvious.
“Uh, are you really sure? it's just that-” she softly said before he interrupted her once again.
“Yes, you are part of the task force now, you are doing a good job.” he said with a small smile on his face, “Alright, lets go mate” he said while leaning down and grabbing Greg once again.
Price started to walk away but before he completely turned away, he looked at Aly, which was about to leave as well.
“Do you mind if I go to you to ask questions about my cat? I am not really an expert on raising cats” he exclaimed while looking at Greg, who was almost asleep in his arms.
“Not at all, you can stop by my office anytime.” She said while putting her hair behind her ear and giving him a warm smile.
“Good,” he said while nodding. “Good night, Aly” he finally said while walking away.
“Good night” Aly replied while waving at him and Greg.
“So he does know my name after all” she thought, without realizing she was feeling extremely happy on the inside. “I really need to stop acting like a high schooler…”.
The car door opened and she sat on the driver's seat, ready to take off. She was relieved she thought of her as part of the task force now, and especially, that she was doing a good job.
Aly was happy with the interaction they had today, although deep inside of her she wished it was more. “Maybe some other time..” she said to herself while starting her car and taking off.
Now she knows why she felt she had to try even harder at work.
