Life Of A New Caregiver

Thank you for requesting! ☺️ I really enjoyed writing it, I actually watched Tangled while writing it! 💜 Please get some sleep if you’re still tired 🥺

You fiddled with your fingers in nervousness as you made your way to the living room. What if he thought it was weird? You had been dealing with your age regression on your own for a while, and if he didn’t want to be your caregiver, that was perfectly fine! But if he straight up hated you for it and wanted to break up because of it, you weren’t sure what you’d do. When you had made your way to the living room, you noticed that Karl was typing something on his laptop. Maybe it was a bad time, maybe you’d try again tomorrow-

“Y/N! Come sit down, love.” You heard Karl say from his place on the couch. You swallowed and sat down on your knees beside him, a habit you had when you were in a little-mindset. You had a feeling tomorrow would be a regression day.

“Can I talk to you about something? Something important?” You asked quietly. Karl nodded and put his laptop aside, focusing all of his attention on you. You cleared your throat and began, moment of truth. “So, Umm... I wanted to tell you about something I go through pretty often. It’s something called age regression, it’s where my mind kind of goes into a child mindset? I play with toys, drink out of sippy cups, talk like a kid, basically do anything a little kid would do. It’s not something I can control, it kinda just happens? And I usually deal with it myself, and I’ll continue to if you don’t want to, but I was wondering if you could be my caregiver? It’s like a parental figure, you take care of me, comfort me, play with me, all of that.”

Karl processed what you said in his mind for a moment, nodding in understanding. He didn’t seem disgusted or angry, so that was a good sign. “I’d love to be your caregiver, anything that makes you feel comfortable and happy.”

You suddenly smiled and held your hands to your chest. “Are you for real? You’ll be my caregiver?” You asked excitedly.

Karl nodded and grinned. “Of course, I wanna help you in anyway I can.” You wrapped your arms around his neck, giggling and thanking him. “Could you show me all the things you have for your regression? I want to make sure I know where everything is for you.”

You smiled and nodded, standing off and running to your “office”, which was actually your little room, or a play room. Karl followed you and let you show him all your stuff, including sippy cups, stuffies, toys, crayons, colouring books, and tons of other things. It shocked Karl that he had never seen or realized this side of you, but he was ready to embrace it fully. When it got late enough to go to bed, he stayed up and spent the majority of the night doing as much research as possible about age regression.

When you woke up, you realized you were in a full little-mindset. You giggled and climbed out of bed, running to your playroom and putting on a cat onzie. Once you were done, you took your favourite teddy bear and started looking for Karl. With your eyebrows furrowed, you made your way downstairs and met up with him in the kitchen.

“Dada!” You exclaimed. Karl was preparing some breakfast for the two of you, but stopped when he heard your voice. He turned around and smiled.

“Good morning, sugar.” Karl greeted you. He seemed a little tired, but in your child mindset, you didn’t notice anything different. “I’m making us some pancakes and goldfish, does that sound good to you?”

You grinned and giggled. “Gofish!” You said excitedly. Karl smiled and handed you a sippy cup full of apple juice.

“You go sit down at the table with your juice and teddy, and then I’ll bring breakfast, okay?” He explained. You nodded happily, your bear tucked under your arm.

“Otay, dada!” You said, before running off to the kitchen table. He smiled and went back to cutting your pancakes into pieces, along with putting goldfish in the separate part of the plate. You kicked your feet back and forth happily as you sipped on your juice, your teddy bear sitting in your lap. Karl placed two pancakes on his own plate and brought both plates out to table. You clapped and giggled when you saw the pancakes covered the syrup and the collection of goldfish on the other side.

“You need any help, sugar?” Karl asked before he bit into his own pancakes. You shook your head.

“No tank you, dada. I can do it, Imma big girl!” You explained. Karl ruffled your hair softly and you ate together, talking about the occasional thing that came to your little mind. When you were all done, Karl helped you put the dishes in the sink, since you liked to help out.

“Do you wanna watch a movie? Maybe a Disney one?” Karl suggested. You grinned and nodded, shifting your weight from one foot to the other.

“Can we pease watch Tangoed?” You asked softly. Karl nodded and helped you get comfortable on the couch, a fluffy blanket and pillow, and of course your stuffy. He gave you some water in a sippy cup, since you already had juice, and he loaded up Tangled on the TV. He opened up his laptop to get some work done while you watched, taking occasional looks over to you to make sure you were alright.

As he typed, he heard you hum along to the songs, which made him smile. He didn’t know he’d enjoy being a caretaker as much as he did, but he truly loved taking care of you. It was around halfway through the movie when he noticed your eyes becoming droopy and your humming slowly turned to nothing.

“Dada...” You said softly. He stopped typing and looked over at you, putting his laptop down on the coffee table. “Paci, pease.”

“I’ll be right back, okay?” He said, going to your room and grabbing your favourite pacifier from your shelf of important supplies. He came back and handed the pacifier to you.

“Tanks, dada.” You mumbled, before putting your pacifier in your mouth. Karl smiled and tucked the blanket closer to you as your eyes slowly closed.

“Have a nice nap, sugar.” Karl whispered. He paused the movie and listened to hear your gentle breathing, a sign that you were fast asleep. He placed your sippy cup on the coffee table so you wouldn’t drop it in your sleep. He could definitely get used to this life of a caregiver.

“The Cost of Living” by Martyna Majok wins the 2018 Pulitzer Prize in Drama. “The Minutes by Tracy Letts and “Everybody” by Brandon Jacobs-Jenkins were selected as finalists.

This only begins the Season of Theater Awards, which will heat up within the next few weeks. This month is already hot with openings — six on Broadway within the next nine days. I’ve already reviewed eight plays and musicals just in the past week (See below.).

Week in NY Theater Reviews

Amar Ramasar and company in “Blow High, Blow Low.”

Carousel

The new “Carousel” has the most glorious singing on Broadway, as well as thrilling choreography and picturesque sets and costumes that seem lifted from great American paintings by Thomas Eakins and Edward Hopper. It also has a surprisingly dark story whose last half hour has aged so poorly it offers a bizarre mix of the ugly and the precious.

Mlima’s Tale

Elephants might become extinct in 20 years because of poaching for their ivory, we learn from “Mlima’s Tale,” the unusual new play by Lynn Nottage, the Pulitzer prize winning playwright of Ruined and Sweat, which is staged poetically by Jo Bonney, with a memorable performance by Sahr Ngaujah as Mlima. When we first see him, Ngaujah is in a tense crouch, his left arm stretched in the air behind him, his right arm curled below him, like an especially fierce bowler – or a massive elephant with a mighty trunk…

King Lear

“King Lear” begins with a foolish ruler swayed by flattery, and ends with what Royal Shakespeare Company artistic director Greg Doran calls “a strange, profound unease.” Shakespeare’s tragedy is, in other words, as relevant as ever. And Doran’s often visually arresting if rarely shattering production at the Brooklyn Academy of Music’s Harvey Theater, which stars Antony Sher as Lear, is as good as any to remind us of the Bard’s insights into stormy times, and the self-delusions of the powerful.

Mean Girls

At the end of “Mean Girls,” Cady, the new girl in high school who tries so hard to fit in that she’s become phony and superficial, tells her classmates that she’s learned her lesson: “I wanted everyone to like me so bad, I kind of lost myself in the process.” Had Tina Fey and her collaborators learned the same lesson, they surely would not have turned her smart, funny 2004 movie into the overlong, ill-timed Broadway musical that is currently running at the August Wilson Theater.

Children of a Lesser God

The first Broadway revival of “Children of a Lesser God,” the award-winning, boundary-breaking 1980 play by Mark Medoff about the romance and eventual marriage between a hearing teacher at a school for the deaf and a deaf graduate, is the only show on Broadway whose creative team includes a “director of artistic sign language.” It is the only show on Broadway to project supertitles of the entire script at EVERY performance, and to schedule sign language interpreters regularly. And, above all, it is of course the only show that marks the stunning Broadway debut of Lauren Ridloff, who portrays Sarah Norman, whose language (like the actress’s) is American Sign Language. These are reasons enough to welcome this production, and to consider it pioneering, even as the play it’s remounting feels dated.

Dutch Masters

n “Dutch Masters,” a new play written by Greg Keller and directed by Andre Holland, a young black man meets a young white man on the subway, with unexpected results. In “Dutchman,” the 1964 play by LeRoi Jones (soon to change his name to Amiri Baraka), a young black man meets a white woman on the subway, with unexpected results….“Dutchman” winds up a surreal and merciless indictment of White America. “Dutch Masters” is more realistic, and less harsh, but it too requires a suspension of disbelief, and it too comments on race relations in America. It also adds an observation about class that feels exactly right – showing how race and class can sometimes be synonymous.

Miss You Like Hell

Miss You Like Hell,” a new musical by “In The Heights” book writer Quiara Alegría Hudes and singer-songwriter Erin McKeown, depicts the most American of adventures, the road trip. But this road trip takes place in the America of today, and so the discoveries and self-discovery are edged with some dark realities. Daphne Rubin-Vega, portraying one of her most vibrant original characters since her Broadway debut in “Rent,” is Beatriz Santiago, a Mexican immigrant mother who…insists that her 16-year-old estranged daughter Olivia accompany her on a cross-country trip over the next seven days.

This Flat Earth

Lindsey Ferrentino’s drama takes a more oblique approach than most of the other plays about school shootings that I’ve seen — and I’ve seen too many…The details of the shooting that has the characters reeling are offered in disconnected bits and piece, and kept vague. Instead, “This Flat Earth” largely focuses on the small, subtly devastating (and sometimes amusing!) effects on a handful of characters in the aftermath.

The Week in Theater Awards

The Pulitzer citation for “Cost of Living” reads: “An honest, original work that invites audiences to examine diverse perceptions of privilege and human connection through two pairs of mismatched individuals: a former trucker and his recently paralyzed ex-wife, and an arrogant young man with cerebral palsy and his new caregiver.”

My review : In “Cost of Living,” an eye-opening play featuring a quartet of extraordinary performances, playwright Martyna Majok offers a tart retort to that sappy Barbra Streisand song about the luck of people who need people, and smashes more than one stereotype along the way…”

The play contained one of my favorite moments on stage in 2017:

Katy Sullivan, Victor Williams. In Cost of Living, Eddie gave his disabled wife Ani a bath, and decided to serenade her with a piano concerto. There is no piano in the bathroom, and Eddie never learned to play anyway, much as he wanted to. But he takes her paralyzed arm from the water, drapes it on the bathtub’s edge and plays her like a piano, synchronized with the radio broadcast.
