The Eco-Friendly Choice: Sustainable Practices in Windshield Repair and Replacement
The automotive industry contributes around 14-15 % to the carbon emissions for global warming. The climate change and environmental concerns are growing with each passing day and it is important for the automotive sector to adopt eco-friendly practices and look for sustainable solutions and alternatives, even when it comes to windshield repair and replacement. Many automotive glass repair and replacement companies like AIS Windshield Experts have started following environment-friendly practices to make their contribution towards a healthier and greener environment.
In this article we will discuss some of the eco-friendly practices that can be followed while working with the windshields –
Sustainable Manufacturing – Supporting manufacturers that use energy-efficient processes and renewable energy sources can help reduce the overall carbon footprint of windshield production. A lot of glass manufacturers are adopting greener production methods these days, like using energy-efficient processes and environmentally friendly materials, which helps reduce the environmental impact of glass manufacturing.
Recycle and Reuse – Windshields are made of glass and the biggest advantage is that glass is a recyclable material. Old windshields can be recycled into various glass products, reducing landfill waste. By reusing materials, the demand for new glass production can be reduced, which can eventually help conserve natural resources, and decrease energy consumption and emissions associated with glass manufacturing.
Repair over Replacement – Repairing small chips and cracks instead of windscreen replacement can help reduce waste and conserve resources. Choosing car glass repair over replacement can prevent further damage from happening which might require replacement. Repairing does not involve energy-extensive processes, requires less materials, and reduces the demand for new parts. By repairing, we can extend the life of the materials making them more sustainable.
The Importance of Consumer Awareness
It is crucial to inform vehicle owners about various eco-friendly options to empower them to make decisions that align with their environmental values. Additionally, it is also important to make the consumers understand that while the primary goal of sustainable practices is environmental protection, it can also lead to significant cost savings for vehicle owners. Using recycled materials and more efficient production processes can reduce the costs of auto glass services, and increase the life span of various components of a vehicle, thus helping the consumers save money.
If the consumers understand the benefits of sustainable practices, they would be more inclined towards opting for eco-friendly alternatives, which in turn can increase the demand for greener solutions. This will put the responsibility on the auto glass manufacturers and service providers to invest in research and development of eco-friendly products and procedures.

Car Windscreen and Summer: What Should You Know?
As summer's scorching heat envelops the world, it is vital to acknowledge the critical aspect of car maintenance. While ensuring the interior remains cool and comfortable, the windshield plays a pivotal role in ensuring both safety and comfort during these blistering months. Here's why maintaining the car windshield during the summer is crucial.
Shielding from Damage: In the summer heat, any little cracks or chips in a windshield can get worse fast. The hot temperatures make the glass expand and contract, which can turn small problems into big ones. Fixing these issues early stops them from spreading and keeps the view clear when driving.
Keeping Things Strong: When it's really hot outside, the windshield can get weaker. This means it is more likely to get cracks or even break, which is dangerous for everyone in the car. Checking the windshield regularly helps to spot weak spots and stop them from becoming big problems.
Protecting the Seal: The sun in summer can also damage the seal that holds the windshield in place. This seal can get weaker over time from the sun's rays, which might let water into the car. Making sure the seal stays strong helps keep the windshield secure and stops any leaks inside the car.
Regular Checkup: It is also crucial to regularly check the windshields for any damages. If it is damaged to any extent, it is necessary to get it fixed as soon as possible. Looking after the car's windshield in the summer is super important for keeping everyone safe and comfortable on the road. By fixing any problems early, one can make sure their car stays in good shape for all their summer adventures. When it comes to fixing or replacing the windshield or even getting a simple car cleaning service, it is essential to pick the right people for the job.

Why Getting Your Windshield Repaired Should Be the First Thing on your Agenda: 4 Horror Stories to Help Your Decision
The windshield of a car is like its skin that protects the insides from harm, deflecting dust, debris, and foreign objects. Much like the skin on your body, your windshield is designed to withstand these elements.
But even the toughest of windshields cannot compete against rocks or other large objects flying toward them, much like your skin cannot resist being subjected to physical damage from time to time.
Your windshield is going to start showing cracks and chips on its surface in cases of collisions.
When there is a minor scrape on the skin, it is usually healed in a little amount of time because of the body’s self-recovering properties. But when the cut is deep enough to permeate the flesh, if left untreated, it will allow bacteria and debris to enter the body, resulting in severe problems like the risk of infection and festering.
Similarly, if the crack on a windshield is deep enough to warrant a replacement, but for any reason is not being replaced by the owner of the car, it will in time cause a number of problems.
Even the smallest of cracks and chips will only grow bigger and bigger and cause the glass to weaken. This will make it less likely to be able to withstand any kind of impact and make them more likely to shatter when you least expect it to.
Windshields are designed to withstand the most extreme conditions, and so are extremely strong, they are usually made of two layers of laminated glass with a layer of plastic sandwiched between them to further increase the strength. While surface scratches that do not permeate beyond the first layer of the glass are relatively minor and do not require a windshield replacement, cracks that reach the middle plastic layer of the windshield cannot be repaired. They need to be replaced altogether.
These multiple layers allow the windshield to hold its shape and remain attached to its frame, protecting you and your loved ones within the car in case of accidents. However, when any of the layers is damaged beyond repair, it will undoubtedly have an impact on the glass’s ability to offer the same amount of protection.
Are Cracked Windshields Really All that Dangerous?
The answer to that question is a resounding YES. According to stats released by the Canadian Automobile Association (CAA), almost 80% of all car crashes and 65% of near misses occur as a result of some form of driver distraction.
While texting and calling while driving are the main culprits of most distracted driver related collisions, even the smallest of windshield cracks that is right in the line of vision of the driver can distract them enough for a crash to occur. Most of the times, it takes only a split second for it to turn fatal.
Cracks on windshields can also reflect sunlight and cause a glare, blinding you—if even momentarily—and reducing visibility. Here are a few things that a cracked windshield puts you at risk for:
Weakens the structure of your cur
For any car to work like clockwork as it is supposed to, it is imperative that every part of it be in superior working condition. The windshield not only protects you and your loved ones from the elements, but also holds up the roof of your car.
When the windshield is cracked or broken, it weakens the ability of the roof to bear impact and can cause it to buckle in case of a collision. Even if the cracked windshield itself did not cause the accident, it can easily make a minor accident turn deadly if the roof collapses upon impact.
Allows rain and sleet to enter the car
If you’ve ever tried driving a car during heavy rain, you’re aware of how much downpours can affect visibility. With the roads already made slippery because of the rain, you need every last bit of control over your vehicle.
Now, couple that with a broken windshield that is steadily drip drip dripping water onto your dashboard. Not only is it distracting and will take much needed attention away from the road, but will also allow water to accumulate inside your car.
This water, if allowed to collect over time, will cause a musty smell in your vehicle and possibly become a breeding ground for germs and bacteria, making you and your loved ones sick. Not only that, your car will also suffer water damage that will require a significant amount of money to fix if your car stalls because water got where it wasn’t supposed to.
Makes Accidents More Fatal
A windshield whose structural integrity is already compromised because of the crack running along its surface will have a harder time withstanding impact.
Windshields are meant to protect you in case of accidents and a cracked windshield is more likely to completely shatter in any collision. There have been multiple reported cases of people flying out of cars through shattered windshields and such kind of incidents greatly increase the possibility of a car crash ending in serious injuries or even fatalities.
Cracked Glass Reduces Visibility
If the crack is directly in line of sight of the driver, it can cause a major distortion of light and can bend light in ways that can make objects appear nearer or farther away than they are. This increases the risk of a crash as the driver misjudges the distance between himself and the object.
If the crack is not repaired in time, washer fluid, moisture and dirt can enter the crack of the windshield and cause it to become dirty and discolored; this further reduces visibility.
Increases Risk of Glass Shattering Due to Pressure
Your car vibrates when you drive. These vibrations travel all the way from the tires of your car to the roof. Your car feels every bump and dip in the road and the impact also travels all the way through the car.
An intact windshield is designed to withstand these vibrations and a proper installation can further improve its resistance to these bumps. But a crack running along its surface is only going to grow larger every time your car goes over a pothole.
But even if your windshield shatters in the worst scenario—if it is made of the proper materials and is properly installed—it should not break away from the frame and fall into the car and further injure passengers. This is because of the resins that are used to keep the glass in its place and also because of the laminated glass that prevents the windshield from separating from its frame.
Prevents airbags from deploying effectively
Your windshield acts as a “backstop” for the airbag on the passenger’s side of the car. When the airbag is deployed, it is released upwards and deflects off the windshield and protects the passenger from hurtling headfirst out the car. Cracked windshields become incapable of standing the high speed of 150-200mph at which airbags are deployed and could either cause the airbag to not deploy properly, or even break the windshield altogether. This could lead to a serious injury for the passenger which could easily have been avoided with prior precautions.
If you’re still not convinced about the need to replace your windshield as soon as possible, we’ve compiled a list of incidents where a broken windshield caused far more damage that could have easily been prevented with a timely repair job. Fair warning, some of these could be extremely gory.
Pilot gets sucked out of plane window after windshield shatters – May 15 2018
One of the most recent instances of an injury because of the windshield shattering occurred in May 15, 2018 when the co-pilot of an Airbus A319 jetliner was partially sucked out of the cockpit when the windshield suddenly shattered at an altitude of 32,000.
The plane, which took off from Chongqing in China and was scheduled to land in the Tibetan city of Lhasa, was forced to make an emergency landing in Chengdu, another Chinese city. The pilot landed the plane in -40°C temperatures and wind speeds of 800km/hour, clad in only a shirt.
The co-pilot which had been sucked out of the window was quickly pulled back in and only suffered minor injuries, but this incident brings to mind another similar, incident where the victim did not make it.
Mother of two passes away after being sucked out of airplane window – April 2018
In a horrific case of airplane accidents, a 42-year-old bank executive who was also a mother of two succumbed to injuries sustained when she was partially sucked out of the airplane window on a Southwest Airlines flight. The window broke when a piece of shrapnel that broke away from the plane’s blown out engine shattered the glass.
Other passengers managed to hold on to the woman, identified as Jennifer Riordan, and saved her from being completely sucked out of the window. Passengers report blood splattering all over the plane seats and interior and a state of chaos inside the machine. She was completely strapped in and buckled up when the incident occurred, and coroners reported that her cause of death was blunt trauma caused by a piece of shrapnel from the window which struck her.
Passenger ejected from car and run over in a drunk driving incident – 2013
In yet another incident of casualty resulting from inebriated driving, a drunk 24 year old woman rear-ended a Chrysler, which caused her windshield to shatter, ejecting her passenger. She then continued to drive away from the incident, and removed the rear seat passenger from her car and proceeded to perform CPR upon him. She then drove back to the scene of the accident and ran over her passenger that had been ejected. The passenger was pronounced dead upon arrival by medical examiners when he was transferred to the hospital.
Man ejected from car when windshield shatters upon contact lives to tell the tale – June 13, 2018
In a scene resembling one out of a Hollywood movie, a toll plaza video in Florida shows a violent crash, ejecting a backseat passenger 30 feet into the air when the driver hit the divider at break neck speed.
The vehicle, with five passengers in it, burst into flames upon contact, but all of the remaining passengers managed to scramble out of the car to safety.
Surprisingly, the passenger ejected from the car not only survived the crash but also did not suffer any life-threatening injuries. The outcome could have been vastly different had he hit either the toll booth or the divider itself, officials report. The crash occurred due to the driver falling asleep at the wheel due to fatigue.
Repairing and Replacing Windshield Glass Cracks
While most of these incidents were caused because of various reasons, a precautionary windshield examination could have prevented the ejection of the passengers altogether. Either way, after crashes like these described above, the owners are going to need to need glass repair for sure.
