I really wish Carnival Row had been based off something, because the world building is so complete and so fascinating I would hardcore read an entire comic series and 12 part book series set in this world, and it kills me that this wasn’t more popular because it means it’s really going to die with a whimper and get none of that massive franchise it deserves

One Dress a Day Challenge
August: Fantasy & Sci-Fi
Carnival Row (s2e2, "New Dawn") / Caroline Ford as Sophie Longerbane
Overall, I didn't like the costumes for season 2 of the show as much as those for season 1. This may be because Nina Ayres replaced Joanna Eatwell as the designer--maybe I just prefer Eatwell's style. However, I did like this deep green dress for Sophie, especially when paired with the smart feathered tricorn hat. A proper hat can elevate any outfit!
While the Burguish ladies' styles of season 1 seemed based on 1890s styles, with the leg-of-mutton sleeves, this dress has more of an 1870s-1880s feel to it, with the drapery in front and a fairly pronounced bustle in back. Compare this costume to this one (from Back to the Future part III), for example, or this actual example (from 1878). I'm not sure whether that is supposed to represent a shift in Burguish fashion or just a change in design philosophy.
Note that the skirt is made of a subtly different fabric from the jacket. The jacket has a faint spotted pattern, while the skirt has floral sprigs. Also, see below for a closeup of the bodice decoration (which also resembles the Back to the Future dress). The hat has similar trim.
